"Not afraid of others doing well as such competition only improves you as a player" : Mohammad Nawaz

Regarded by many as a top candidate for the all-important position of a bowling all-rounder for Pakistan, Mohammad Nawaz has impressed many with a display of maturity beyond his age in his performances for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. At twenty-two years of age, he has taken thirty-seven wickets in fifty-one Twenty20 games and continues to show improvement at the domestic and international level.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Mohammad Nawaz spoke about his performance with the Quetta Gladiators in the 2017 edition of the PSL, the presence of Viv Richards with the team in Lahore and looked forward to the final of the PSL being played in Lahore.

PakPassion.net : The last over against Peshawar Zalmi in the play-offs was very tense but you coped really well?

Mohammad Nawaz : I really enjoyed that time as the first thing our captain Sarfraz Ahmed said to me when that final over was about to start was that this was the time to become a hero and show my strengths as a bowler. We had originally planned to bowl at the off-stump but then we changed our plan towards the end of the over to bowl Yorker length, and that worked for us very nicely.

PakPassion.net : Regardless of planning, it must have taken nerves of steel to bowl that over.

Mohammad Nawaz : As I came up to bowl that last over, I said to myself that whatever happens next, I will give it my hundred percent and bowl the best I can. The Almighty helped me in my efforts as it was getting very difficult to grip the ball with all the dew on the ground. My confidence slowly grew as the over went by and I felt that we could win the game which is what happened in the end.

PakPassion.net : How satisfied are you with the way the 2017 edition of the PSL has gone up till now?

Mohammad Nawaz : I felt that the tournament started off well for me. In the first four games, I had some reasonably good figures to show for my efforts. But then there was a dip in my fortunes where I went wicket-less for four games in a row. I suppose this is what the Twenty20 format is all about. You can have a few good games and then somewhere along the line you get hit for some runs. I feel overall I have done well and especially in view of the conditions such as those in the last game where I had to bowl with the ball affected by dew. I suppose the Twenty20 format is all about entertainment and runs can flow with ease, but I have learned a lot from this tournament and hopefully will only improve further in the future.

PakPassion.net : Was there a noticeable difference in the pitches used for this year’s PSL in the UAE as compared to the previous year?

Mohammad Nawaz : In my view, there is definitely a great improvement in the quality of pitches for this year’s PSL. Apart from one or two games where the ball seemed to grip and spin extra-ordinarily, most of the other pitches were very sporting and resulted in very competitive games. As we saw, quite a few games went all the way to the last over and even the last ball which was great for the spectators to watch. The pitches helped both the batsmen and the bowlers pretty much throughout the tournament in UAE which was excellent.

PakPassion.net : How big a boost is it for the Quetta Gladiators that Sir Vivian Richards will be with your team in the final?

Mohammad Nawaz : I have been here for a few days now and I can't wait any longer to see Viv Richards on our soil to support our team. I have to say that I am feeling very proud and happy that a player of his stature and a true legend of the game will be amongst us in Pakistan very soon. What he is doing to support Pakistan cricket by coming over is simply amazing, especially if you consider the fact that other foreign players have refused to visit Pakistan for the final. As a mentor, he has been great for all of us as he always talks to us before and after the games and gives us advice. He really helps us build confidence in our abilities and you feel good and special that a player with such vast experience is advising you on your game. This is just an amazing experience for any youngster.

PakPassion.net : How are you feeling about the PSL final in Lahore?

Mohammad Nawaz : In the few days I have spent so far talking to friends, family and other Lahorites, I can tell you that the only topic being discussed is the upcoming PSL final. They all seem to be talking about the teams, tickets and anything else related to the final. Whether it’s in person or being discussed on the television screens, there seems to be just one topic on everyone’s minds which simply shows the excitement around this game. Personally, I am also very excited about this and really happy for people in Lahore as they will get to see a game of such quality after a very long time. I am not joking but I tell you that it feels like we are a day away from the Eid festival; such is the spirit amongst everyone in Lahore. This is a great sign for our cricket and obviously excellent for any young cricketer like me, as we will get to play in front of our home crowds. I can tell you that playing in front of a large crowd is a great opportunity for any player to learn to perform under pressure which can help him in his career.

PakPassion.net : How confident are you that Quetta can go one better this year and win the PSL trophy?

Mohammad Nawaz : The loss in last year’s final was very unfortunate for us but this year, we have a lot of confidence in our abilities to win the trophy. Our morale is very high and we feel that we have done enough hard work to come this far and God Willing, each and every squad member is very committed to winning the final.

PakPassion.net : Do you feel that the competition for spinning all-rounders has really become very tough?

Mohammad Nawaz : My only concern and aim is to concentrate on my own performances. I need to ensure that I learn and put into practice any lessons I have picked up and to continue to improve myself day-by-day. I am not afraid of others doing well as I believe that such competition only improves you as a player. In this way, you tend to work harder to improve your skills and that in turn, is a great sign for Pakistan cricket.

Eid in Lahore it seems! Such spirit for the final

Nawaz has struggled at times this year and hasn't lived up to the reputation he built up in PSL 1 but that was a very good over against Zalmi. Held his nerve while the batsmen couldn't. Deserves credit for that.

I really loved his celebration. Showing Pakistan who the real man is. :mn

That was some over from him.

Nerves of steel and will be a huge boost for his confidence.

Really notched up his game in final. Brilliant performance with the ball.

I still feel that Nawaz has more to offer the Pakistan team.

It seems to me that he was undermined a bit against West Indies when Asghar was called up even though Nawaz was there in the Test squad.

It's clear Misbah doesnt rate him, hardly gave him a bowl even when Zulfiqar was doing crap. Nawaz could come and take a wicket or two then hardly bowl.

Maybe things will change with Sarfraz

Saj He hasn't done badly at all, Bowls pretty decent and gets it to spin.

However from batting perspective in limited overs he looks more like an accumulator and Pakistan already has alot of them, Another thing I'd point out is that Nawaz needs to really work hard over his batting against spinners, Spend some time in nets with Grant Flower which would certainly do good to him, Looks pretty fine playing pace but weak against spin.

Should atleast target bowling average of 28-30 in ODIs and Batting average of 35. For test matches considering he will get onto bowl in UAE that too in third or fourth innings should look up at 25-28 mark while batting average of 35-40.

Maybe he could be tried as makeshift opener at the top order in limited overs as he is better against pace and makeshift openers can work in modern day limited overs.

Looked like ABD Version 2.0 today in Batting smashing 80 odd in 50 balls but he is currently getting spanked in bowling

He has improved on his power hitting ever since when we first saw him.

Although he isn't the most talented, he is hardworking. Hopefully he will further improve and become a quality all rounder to replace Imad.

I've rated him since his U19 days. Needs more chances.

This guy is not inferior to Imad, and actually has potential to be better than him. Needs the backing.

Best All-Rounder - Muhammad Nawaz - 121 runs and 9 wickets

There are lots of players doing great at Domestic competitions, but when they come to International cricket they can't hold the bat properly. Md. Nawaz is getting into that category :

Outstanding Domestic
Below Mediocre International

I hope I am proven wrong

Batting well with Asif Ali - has made 58* in a potentially match saving partnership with Asif (QEA Round 1 2019/20)

It may not be a popular opinion, but I like Nawaz as a cricketer and I think he can be a better player than show-off Shadab if given the same amount of exposure.

100 not out fro nawaz..i had high hopes of him but he let me down like Faheem Ashraf did.i think its about confidence as he is a good spinner and a decent batter.

From PCB Report: (Northern v Bal - Day 3 - QeA20 2020/21)

All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz scored his career’s 12th half-century after resuming the day on 39.

The left-hander scored 67 from 166 balls, which included four fours.

95* at the moment... could be a match winning effort

Umar Amin and Mohammad Nawaz helped Northern secure a draw against Balochistan at the National Bank Sports Complex. (Round 4 of QeA20):

Northern were set 394 to win. They managed 385 for eight in 84 overs.

Umar recorded his career’s 21st century with a 162-ball 123.

He joined Nawaz, who scored 180-ball 95, at the crease with Northern struggling at 62 for four courtesy Kashif Bhatti – who had dismissed three of the top four batsmen by then and finished the innings with a five-fer, his 20th at this level.

The pair put a 123-run alliance for the fifth wicket.

Good to see him scoring runs in 1st-class cricket. He could be a squad player moving for.

Definitely an option as a batting all-rounder.

He's definitely a player for me who should be involved in the intl. fold more. He's a good economical bowler, handy batsman and good fielder.

PCB report from Day 1 of Round 5 of QeA20:

Mohammad Nawaz crunched 15 fours and two sixes as he scored 121 from 146. His century followed two half-centuries in as many innings as the all-rounder was dismissed on 67 and 95 in his side’s fourth round fixture against Balochistan, which ended in a draw.

his economical bowling and excellent fielding puts him at same level as Jadeja. His batting is good enough for our standard. Should have been in the team ahead of player like Imad

Hes good option but the only difference is that imad can hit the ball clean nawaz is a level below in ball striking

Love his attitude but he really doesn't do much with the ball. Also bottled it on key occasions if I recall.

He should make money in leagues. Enough of such talent.

From PCB report for Round 7 of QeA20

After electing to bat first and slipping to 63 for five, Northern were first rescued by a 97-run sixth wicket stand between Mohammad Nawaz (50, 6x4, 97b) and Hammad Azam (47) before Asif Ali’s whirlwind 39-ball 72 knock, comprising nine fours and five sixes, lifted Northern to 243.

From PCB Report, Round 8, Day 1 of QeA20:

That Northern were able to crawl beyond the 200-run mark was due to half-centuries by Mohammad Nawaz and wicketkeeper-batsman Jamal Anwar.

Nawaz posted his fifth half-century of the season with the innings top-score of 79, which included 10 fours, while Jamal made a 72-ball 51, a knock which was studded with six fours and two sixes.

Given the form Nawaz has shown in this QEA, it should bring good headaches for the selectors for the upcoming home test series.

In my opinion a finger spinner on spinning subcontinent tracks is more lethal than a wrist spinner. Hence, we should have horses for courses where Nawaz should be part of test squads in Pakistan and UAE while Shadab is an automatic for test matches in SENA.

Time for Yasir to play test matches only in subcontinent if he fails in NZ.

Really, this year Mohammad Nawaz has done with the bat precisely what Fawad Alam did between the ages of 26 and 33.

But he has the added attribute that as a bowler he is quite similar to Ravendra Jadeja: no dip, no drift but a solid finger-spinner who can be hard to bat against on a turning wicket.

Of course he is not Nauman Ali. But he could bat at Number 5 in Asia and be a useful third spinner, exactly like Mohammad Hafeez used to be in UAE Tests.

Looking forward to the 2021-23 World Test Championship round, in terms of matches in Asia I find myself thinking that now is the time to dump everyone who will be 33 or older by July 2021, and to head for:

1. Shan Masood
2. Abdullah Shafique
3. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
4. Babar Azam (c)
5. Saud Shakeel or Haider Ali
6. Mohammad Nawaz (3rd spinner)
7. Shadab Khan (2 nd spinner)
8. Amad Butt (3rd seamer)
9. Sajid Khan (main spinner)
10. Naseem Shah
11. Shaheen Shah Afridi

Outside Asia I would replace Sajid Khan with Hasan Ali.

In the 2018 Asia Cup, he looked unlikely to trouble even a club batsman with his bowling.

Another bits and pieces cricketer.

He has always fancied himself as a batsman first & then a bowler, inaugural edition of PSL left an impression that he's some Rangana Herath with the ball, which he never was. Happy for him though, he's a good batsman with a solid technique & consistently batting in the middle order this season has helped him. He's still young and I think could play as Bat AR for Pakistan in Tests & ODIs in future & not to forget that he's a gun fielder, probably 2nd best only behind Shadab.

The batting depth is all time low when he is among top scorers. The only hope for Pakiatan is Haider and Abdullah becoming world class, also Imam ul haq needs further improvement to reach decent level(no hope from him to be worldclass) otherwise we will be a lowly ranked team for next 5 to 8 years :)). Babar alone can't do anything

He is having a good season with the bat people can improve with age and experience and atleast unlike shadab he puts his head down and plays 4 day domestic matches.

He's a batting allrounder and has always said that's what he is. If he improves his economy rate in first class he's essentially a younger Jadeja (whose test stats are vastly inflated from playing in Indian dustbowls). He could potentially carry out the Zulfiqar Babar role in home tests whilst averaging 35-40 with the bat, which is perfect. With him in the team your lower order can shape into the following:

6. Nawaz (35-40 runs)
7. Shadab (30-35 runs)
8. Hassan Ali (20-25 runs)
9. Yasir Shah (15-20 runs)
10. Sajid Khan/Nauman Ali (15-20 runs)
11. Shaheen Shah/Naseem Shah/Mohammad Abbas (0 runs)

That's between 115-140 runs. Pair that with a hundred/fifty from Babar/Rizwan and probably a combined 50 from the pathetic group of Abid, Shan and Azhar, you're looking at consistent 300+ scores, with a 6 man quality bowling attack to defend that.

I totally agree, except I think that Yasir Shah's time has now passed.

He is officially 35 in May, but his performances outside Asia have always been poor and it's time to turn the page.

Outside Asia I want 4 quicks plus Shadab and Mohammad Nawaz.

In Asia I want to remove the 4th quick and add Sajid Khan as my lead spinner.

Would like to see him play Test cricket ahead of Shadab. He hasn’t been given enough chances.

I'm not sure if Nawaz has the ability to average in the 30's outside Asia. I was watching him against Shahnawaz Dhani, and he's weak against the moving ball. Yasir's time has definitely passed, but Misbah will never remove him from the team. In an ideal scenario you'd definitely take him and Azhar out. Abid and Shan unfortunately don't have any short term replacements doing well in the domestic circuit. Worst thing is that Haider Ali (who was performing magnificently last QEA and averages 50 as an opener) seems to have been labelled as a LOI specialist.

Has taken up the mantle of opening the bowling in T20s from Imad it seems in this first T20I vs SA.

Very good 1st over, only 5 runs conceded including a very close LBW shout and a fine edge for 4. Good start

Nawaz bowled for a second-ball duck:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.283%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/tn8wqe" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Nawaz gets a crucial wicket to open the door just a tiny bit for Pakistan:

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.283%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/u9l2vt" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

He gets the new ball along with Shaheen. Good start to his over as well

A good start turns into a brilliant start! Wicket of the dangerous Hendricks with his 4th ball, his first over goes for just 2.

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 45.283%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/gy1f6w" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Great matchwinning hand by Nawaz at the end there. Under pressure and delivered!

Played well today, lived up to the all rounder tag. Always nice to see someone finishing a game off and unlike others has finally grasped one of his opportunities.

I couldn't see why M Wasim selected him. But now you see that FC experience has done him great.

Another one of M Wasim's unexpected picks doing well.

I still feel he prefers the legside more, but hopefully he'll be able to prove us wrong in the future.

The most important thing for me was his visibly superior batting intelligence when compared to Faheem who is a more powerful hitter. This guy Nawaz had a plan while batting. Even simon mentioned that he was angling his bat to find a gap in the third man area which was the only good option on the offside and given the lines the bowler was bowling. Faheem on the other hand had no plan apart from trying to smash it.

As I posted in another thread. Nawaz has to be appreciated in this series for two reasons. First he bowled well throughout and with accuracy which is what we expect from him in T20s, secondly he has improved his nerves while batting a bit which were visible in his initial days on Pak shirt and scored some crucial runs in the decider.

Nice to see him re-emerge. He should've been batting ahead of Asif Ali and Hussain Talat. He will provide competition to the lazy Imad Wasim now. Might just be slightly ahead if anything. Should be a fixture in our T20 and ODI squads.

Likes of Nawaz, Shadab, Faheem etc are good options to have for this team.

Good performance from Nawaz with both ball and bat and a more than decent fielder

He will be fighting for a spot with imad..imad is a darter n hardly a wicket taking option

He's a bit like Jadeja, except he's a better batsman and a more limited bowler. He's certainly an upgrade on Imad Wasim, who has never been international class.

Imad Wasim is very underrated, he’s helped us out on many occasions.

Nawaz is good and personally I wanna give him more responsibility and backing by promoting him to no. 5.

Imad Wasim is very talented but also very lazy. He doesn't have the desire to be the best cricketer he can be like some of these younger guys. He is as good as he was when he made his debut 5 some years ago. He wants to get by with minimum effort.

Agree on giving Nawaz more responsibility. He has that with Quetta which is good.

Imad Wasim is an arrogant, lazy cricketer but regardless he's still a gun t20 player. Don't think Nawaz is even close to his level yet in short form cricket. Nawaz's best shot of getting into the national team is probably in tests.

Wait, what? Imad is absolutely proven at international level over a 49 game sample.

Bowling: 22.76 at 6.22. That too when he often bowls in the PP which is a world class economy rate.
Batting: 13.72 at 145.89

I understand that nobody likes the guy but it's impossible to deny that he is one of the most gun t20 players in Pakistan and right up there among some of the best in the world in this particular format.

I can agree with him being lazy and in fact the guys that don't really try their best in terms of maintaining or improving fitness standards is Imad, Haris Sohail and Sarfraz. Misbah complained about these guys back in 2019 about not taking responsibility and lack of fitness standards. I'd still want Imad in there cause he bats well and with the ball he can be lethal, the t20 squad is good and with it we can make a lethal combination.

My request would be to promote Nawaz up the order cause i think if you give him some overs he can blast and he's proven himself worthy (just don't think he's ready for tests though).

Mohammad Nawaz doing the business for Quetta with the bat at the tail end of the innings. Taking Shaheen to the cleaners here, very useful cameo by Nawaz

What a vital hand by Nawaz at the end of the innings, 33 from 20

Done well with the bat for sure Nawaz and also with the ball

Mohammad Wasim speaking to the press:

"Look we replaced Imad with Nawaz and the way he has performed, we will continue with Nawaz; He can bowl with the new ball, bowl in the middle overs, against left or right-handed batsman - he can handle any situation; The same applied to his batting where he can bat in any position or play the role in any slot"

"Imad Wasim has some limitations which he needs to improve upon, because you cannot be a limited cricketer in any form of the game; You need to be ready for any scenario or situation - so when we compare both, Nawaz is the better option"
