Imad Wasim speaking at end of the match against Afghanistan

"Rashid was bowling brilliantly; I couldn’t pick him to be honest but we decided to hang in there and play 50 overs and then see the result, we knew that if we play 50 overs we had the capability to win the game"

"Gulbadin was the only bowler to be targeted to be honest as the wicket was turning square and they have world-class spinners and if you take risks against them, they might take your wicket"

"Ideas was to knock them for singles and doubles and then when the fast-bowlers comes in, we just attack"

"Thank you very much to the crowd, it feels like home here; they gave us lot of boost and confidence "

"We win the next game and you never know what happens and obviously this win gives us a lot of confidence as well so now we believe we can win from any situation so lets hope for the best"

"I didn't think the game was beyond us, we have got very good players in the end. I knew if one of us stayed in, we would've made it"

"Rashid Khan was bowling brilliantly, if we took chances against him we might've given him a wicket. So we were focused on just seeing him out. We knew they were a bowler short so we targeted that"

"We were inside so we didn't know what happened after the match"

"We didn't play good shots in the middle overs but these guys won us games many times, it had to be someone else. They won the last game, now a couple of guys chipped in and won this one so it's great team unity, it happens in cricket"

"I was always in the team. Every time I go out there, I just play for my country, I love my country too much. I want to give 100% every time, result doesn't matter to me if I good 100%. We're good enough to beat any side on a given day"

"Afghanistan's spinners are world class, if they score 250-260 in any track, they can cause trouble to any team. Credit goes to them for their improvement in the last 5 years, they are giving tough time to every teams, they gave India a tough time and Pakistan also. I think they're a force to be reckoned with in a couple years time"

"I never think about what people will say, if I give my 100% and the result isn't in our favour then I can't do anything about that. Either we wouldn't be good enough or the opposition would be good enough. I just wanted to take the match to the end, hitting the spinners was tough so we targeted the pacers"

"We think of Afghanistan as a lowly team but that isn't the case at all, we face them in matches and they are a very tough side. If you lose 1-2 wickets in a run chase, it's very difficult to chase against them. Rashid, Mujeeb, Nabi are all high level bowlers and the wicket was suiting them too. I think our intensity was high but you should credit them for forcing us back"

"Whether we lost with difficulty or ease, a win is a win. Bangladesh is also a very good side and they're performing well. If we play to our potential, we can defeat any side in the world. I'm not saying that just for the presser, this is our team's belief. We have 11 out of 11 match winners in the team and 4 match winners on the bench. I don't think we're scared of any side, such wins give us confidence. Now we believe we can win from any situation"

"I got some cramps, in such heat that can happen, I will eat and drink and recover from it"

"I was focused on not taking a chance against Rashid Khan even if he bowls a maiden. If I needed to take a chance it'd be off the fast-bowlers. We've played enough cricket now to deliver in pressure situations. There are many matches in the past which I couldn't win and I was quite saddened about that but Allah kept something for me today and helped it to happen"

"Saifi is our best player against spin so if he was there, the match could have finished earlier. I don't know what happened with the running and he got run out, but I knew I just had to give him support. When he got out, the others supported me. He has won so many matches for Pakistan, unfortunately run outs happen. Shadab played well and then I will give credit to Wahab, he got bashed a lot but he played with a broken finger today. He bowled with it and then hit a crucial four and six which helped us to win. Salute to him for doing so well for Pakistan"

"What happened with the crowd, I don't know about it. Even if it did happen, it's wrong. We are all Muslims and brothers, we shouldn't fight. Yes on the ground to win the game for your country things happen but I would request the fans that we're all brothers so don't do such things"

"I try to just perform according to the requirements but if it doesn't happen, it's OK, it's not life and death for me, it's just a game and I play it like that. I don't think about getting dropped. I love my country and whatever is needed, I'll try to do it"

He was lucky, was plumb out lbw but not given by the umpire. Nonetheless, a great innings under pressure

He was out twice. Only reason Pak won today was because Afg is a minnow who still do not know how to close matches against big teams and have a bad captain.

Fielding also has to improved, dropped 3 easy ones.

Best innings of him till now.

Well played Imad, well played.

Thank his lucky stars that brain dead Afghani captain bowled out Gulbadin overs instead of his spinners. Imad looked clueless against Rashid. Even Wahab was better option against spin then Imad or Shadab combined.

Blah blah.
What Luck?

Aghan had a review they wasted. On such a turner its very hard for the umpires.

But we also need excuses when PAK wins.

Please post Rashids stats.

Pakistan out scored England, looked feeble against India, trounced the saffers, played consistently v nz and had to go to war against Afghanistan.

Every situation, now a quarter against bang.

Well played Imad but overall this was a terrible performance from Pakistan.

We need to pull our socks up or else face a pretty bad loss against bangladesh.

Beauty of a WC but how you explain to certain posters.

Either he is given 2 lifes or 3 he did the job for Pakistan .he looked like a taliander at start but he stayed at crease done the job which needs to appreciated and shouldn't be undermined.

That is coming from guy who doesn't like imad one bit in odis .He truly played a great inning

Brilliant all-round performance from this man!

Please don't get into these kind of situations. Blood pressure tablets are expensive in Pakistan.

Winning ugly builds self belief...we were due a bad performance...it's just great that it still resulted in a win...will be a different Pakistan against Bangladesh...

We were due a bad performance? You are talking as if Pakistan won 7 matches in a row in this World Cup before meeting Afghanistan. There was a bad performance against the West Indies, Australia, India and even this one against Afghans although Pak ended up on the winning side.

Pak and Bangladesh could well become a dead rubber based on various possibilities of the upcoming matches.

it all seems pre-planned. The airplane message regarding missing persons and now this useless brawl, they'd come prepared for the tussle.

He has joined Babar and Haris as Pakistan's third most important batsman. Never thought he had it in him. Yes, he got lucky with the umpiring decision and Gulbadin error but he had the nerve to capitalise on it.

Not really various possibilities...England need to lose 1 of the next 2...what possibilities have I missed?...

And they beat England, New Zealand, South Africa and now Afghanistan...so stringing three good performances in a row is a tough ask...

Important thing for today is they got over the line...and take the positives from being under par yet closing the game out...

I have been a huge critic of his accusing him of being a passenger. Thanks Imad for shutting me up today, you are a good lower order batsman:wa

First meaningful knock in a Pakistan shirt. Yes he got fortunate with the lbw and was clueless against Rashid but the key is he stuck at it.

Useful joker this imad wadim.Still a largely useless bits and pieces player, taking selfies of himself after mom award.A poor mans jadeja, nothing more.

Yes the one who keeps Pakistan in the World Cup - we can use a few more jokers like him

Imad happy to step up and be Pakistan’s match winner

Pakistan’s Imad Wasim wasn’t remotely fazed by guiding his side to victory over Afghanistan, simply saying it was his turn to be match-winner at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.

After captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was run out going for an ill-judged second, it was left to Imad and the tail to haul Pakistan up to target of 227 and a vital victory keeping knockout ambitions alive.

Haris Sohail and Babar Azam, key men in successive wins over South Africa and New Zealand, took a back seat as Imad compiled 49 not out – nervelessly, according to the 30-year-old himself.

"I wasn't nervous, it wasn't like that," said Imad.

“We have very good players and I knew if one of us stayed in, we’d get to the target.

"It just happened. Rashid was bowling brilliantly and our plan was first not to give him a wicket, and then we could target the rest.

"I think there were some bad shots played, but the guys have won us games may times and it had to be someone else.

"They won the last game and a couple of others chipped in to win this one. These situations happen in cricket but it shows great team unity that we are all contributing.”

Imad fulfils a key role in balancing Sarfaraz’s side but his performances at the World Cup have been solid rather than spectacular, dropping out of the team to face England in their second outing.

He was again unbeaten for 46 in defeat to India, showing his ability to shepherd the lower order and against Afghanistan his skiddy left-arm darts yielded two wickets for 48 runs in ten overs.

Afghanistan strangled a Pakistan middle-order that has performed well of late and Imad hailed their performances across the tournament, particularly their bowling attack.

"The Afghan spinners, they are world-class,” he said.

“If they score over 250 or 260 on any track, they can cause trouble.

"Credit must go to Afghanistan. They have risen up in five years and given a tough time to every team.

"They gave us a tough time and India a tough time. Afghanistan will be a force to be reckoned with in a couple of years’ time.”

I reckon the game would have been easy had Pakistan not played such stupid shots especially imam. Babar I will forgive but the rest showed zero brains.

You are overkilling it there, yes he batted fine but mostly due to poor overs and obvious catch misfield. He wont be surviving much at regular basis.

Yep, he got lucky with the gulabudins over.. otherwise we were losing this match.

Wahab actually saved us by hitting rashid.

Some people needs to get their heart checked, they might have a very small heart.

Afghanistan's fielding was club level today. Their team has been ravaged by their board's interference and politicization and other off field events. Afghanistan unit looks pretty distracted and also doesn't have their full strength team either. The only sane person holding the team together is their coach Phil Simmons, who seems to be reaching his breaking point.
But as opposition, we can only control what is in our hands, so victory should still be a victory and be considered one.

Yes the poster might have overkilled him in praise, but I don't think Imad's a pushover. He has showed a lot of guts in his career with the bat. He is a pretty capable batter with a calm head. His domestic record is also pretty good. Think he has batted out of his position throughout his career. Has taken us over the line quite a few times in t20s as well.

In my opinion one of the best knocks by Pakistani all rounder. On a difficult wicket under pressure won his team the match and excellent support by Wahab as well.

There won’t be a Gulbadiin in every team!

Useful joker this imad wadim.Still a largely useless bits and pieces player, taking selfies of himself after mom award.A poor mans jadeja, nothing more.

How many matches Jadeja has won with his bat in 151 ODI matches he played? Must have won a lot the way you are praising Jadeja. :ma

You have to give him credit. He survived a difficult period and took full advantage of some awful bowling.

Why are majority of the posters slitting their wrists after making it through this match? Has everyone forgotten the Afghans almost pulled off a heist against the mighty Indians as well just a week ago? Not to mention they've provided major jitters to some other teams as well? We won, that's all that matters. We were never going to make it through to the semis on our run rate in the first place, thanks to that heavy loss against the Windies in our opening game. Only way we go through is by beating teams, regardless of the margin.

An England loss on Sunday and our destiny is in our own hands. It's time to rejoice and back the team, people!

There wont be Nabi, Mujeeb and Rashid in every team as well. :smith

That’s my point really. You can have the best bowlers and still lose the match if you have a captain who is looking for ways to lose :D. Much like a garland in a monkey’s hand.

Hung in there and got the team over the line Excellent knock under pressure Well done imad Great nerves

might be a blessing in disguise the way we won..an eye opener after perhaps being complacent winning the last two

Top innings..
Not only run rate pressure when he came in but on a wicket turning square and it being effectively a knock out game..

I honestly thought the game was gone once Safaraz was out...

Reckon most teams would have struggled to chase this total on this wicket

The swag now has performance to boot. One player in the entire team who always looks confident and saved the entire campaign today. Can't wait for another Ind vs Pak

yes he got lucky so what? Sarfraz also had a catch dropped but did he capitalized on that? Haris also got a life from umpiring error dont forget.

Best thing I liked about Imad was despite of getting bamboozled by Rashid, he hanged in there. Waited for his opportunity, pounced on it when it mattered. Unfortunately, he is only the 3rd batsman in our batting line capable of handling pressure after Babar & Haris and that says a lot about our batting lineup

Why did India win in the last over of the match against same Afghans?

Why did India win in the last over of the match against same Afghans?

Lol don’t ask such tough questions. Afghanistan and Indians are brothers genetically if you couldn’t tell.

To be fair, chasing 220 against Afghanistan who just lost their main bowler is not exactly winning "from any situation". Most teams would have done it with their eyes closed.

I disagree. The pitch was supportive towards spin bowling. I think losing their "main" bowler was a blessing for Afghanistan as the part timer filled in well. Our batsmen would have preferred batting against pace on a pitch like that. Afghanistan spinner are the best in this tournament, so I highly doubt that any other team would have chased this target with their eyes closed.

He played well today. But I still think he has a lot of work to do. No disrespect but he cashed in on some poor medium pace bowling and was clueless against the spinner. Also he seems unfit, something that he needs to work on.

Let's not talk like we had 6 Lara's to bat on a square turner. Would Hafeez guarantee you 20 runs of Gulbadin's over? Doesn't matter who is bowling you still need to get the runs. And you still need to win the game.

Sarfaraz got out with us needing 70 runs to win with the tail. Even the most gritty supporter would have had their shoulders drop at the embarrassment that was coming at our face. Imad got 49 of the runs, then. Easy to say in hindsight that we should have walked over the chase but watching 6 timid batsmen get out from the dressing room and then coming on to get you over the line - doesn't happen often in Pakistan cricket.

Exactly. When Sarfraz got out, we are use to losing games from that position. But we didn't. Yes Afghanistan made mistakes, but the opposition still needs to capitalise on it and we did. It was a great victory. Regardless of whether it should have been that close or not.

Imad is a bits and pieces cricketer, but he stood and cashed in on the pacer. He showed a lot of mental strength, after looking absolutely clueless against spin.

Yes but he's also failed, more often than success infact. Such batsman is good for <6 survival mode, nothing more.

Wahab actually saved us by hitting rashid.

No losing really, but the burden was going to ball over Wahab and ending-tail then, and its never a good thing. Chances were going to fall down drastically, but few more blows from Wahab would have kept us safe (most likely).

He averages over 40 with a strike rate of 108 and bats in the lower order and btw his average of over 40 hasn’t come against some minnow teams most of those runs have come against teams like England so before you call him bits and pieces tell me the last time a Pakistani batsmen batting at number 7 averaged over 40.

This statement alone is worthy of sacking Imad and the team management. It truly reflects the awful culture of Pakistan cricket.

Cricket extends beyond someone's average.

He has 16 not outs in 37 innings which inflates that average. So he actually averages around 24 per innings.

I'm not going to even analyse his performance in wins and losses.

You just need to watch him bat to see he is a bits and pieces cricketer, but like I said. He showed soemthing that you don't see from many Pakistani batsman and that's mental strength and that's what is required.

Spoke well at the press conference.

Confident and ready for the upcoming challenges.

Some Pak journis fighting for selfies with him :)

No ever seems happy.....were any of you out there batting against those spinners? Imad kept his cool and got Pakistan over the line. Pakistan has to keep winning as they cannot influence any other results

Struggled against Rashid but done well to absorb the pressure. Clutch innings

Imad was not picking Rashid at all but he stayed out there till the end. He did benefit from Gulbadin bringing himself on and releasing the pressure when the spinners were taking wickets and choking the RR.

But when the opposition makes mistakes you must be there to capitalise - and Imad was there unlike our captain.

Lol you really are the most negative person on this forum...

So what if he got lucky? Roy was lucky today too! In fact almost every game/great innings has an element of luck, heck, think back to the days before DRS and neutral umpires!

Fact is Pakistan won.

Move on.

Can you imagine the abuse being dished out if they lost the match! Some of these "so called fans" are just never happy!

Imad has the personality, poise and temperament to lead this team. He played the knock Sarfraz shuld have played. Should be made vice-captain after the WC.

Thankfully your mindset does not reflect the mindest of Pakistanis, or human decency.

Always been a fan of Imad. He's an underrated cricketer and over the last year he has averaged 49 with the bat and bowled at an economy rate 5.05.

Hitting gulbadan for a cheap few boundary’s shouldn’t change the fact that imad imam hafeez malik safraz wahab should have a permanent full stop put on there careers after the next 2 games for the betterment of pak cricket.
