Your thoughts on todays play go here.....

Day 2.India were brutal...184-1 off only 40 overs!!

Pakistans bowlers let Inzi and the nation big time.

Sami-if he is our saviour, lets all give up now!

Pls fill in the form :

I did/didnt enjoy it
I have/have no plans for suicide
I do/dont support Pakistan

etc - you get the idea.....

can we have title - postmortem thread please!

Go sehwag go! i hope he gets 400 but plays v. careful. that along with rain intervention will be pakistan's best bet. they need to make thes 2 things happen..

then send in sami and rana to see off the new ball (they are a better bet then our current opening batsmen...)

it's a sad state of affairs we're in

remembering back to when the selectors pick the team- i think we were all very shocked at there choices for the pace bowlers ---> well what i was dreading ever since that day has materialized today !!

Sami , Rana and Razzaq never were test quality bowlers and never will be. Yes we were hit hard by injuries to Shabir, Gul and Shoaib --> but i would have liked to see the selectors go with some up and coming young bowlers rather then guys who we already know are not effective test bowlers.

A run feast for India. But not totally unexpected given our limited bowling resources.

Sami - Started well but was soon back to his best. Sprayed it around. Didn't get any significant movement off the pitch. Had Sehwag dropped of his bowling by Taufeeq at third slip. Other than that gave the batsmen plenty of opportunities to hit freely both sides of the wicket.

Rana - Was looking for pace from the start, not swing. Wayward. Too often gave Sehwag the chance to free his arms. No swing on show.

Razzak - Better than the two above. Bowled well to Sehwag in patches but also gave a four ball a little too often. Still kept it relatively tight (just less than 5 an over).

Kaneria - Best bowler on show. Good control again, got some turned and mixed it up. Picked up the only wicket and had Sehwag dropped by Younis at slip. Should concentrate on the middle stump line rather than off to make Dravid and co play him more often than not.

We have a lot to improve upon tomorrow.

yepp soon we will be pulling off a newzealand and bowling our spinner from ball one. what's the point of an opening pacer if he can't use the new ball to swing??

Thanks for your kind words Marooned - the truth is brutal - there's no need to hide it - We was whipped !!!

sami, rana and razzaq shud be made to do murgah and whipped and beaten with size 13 bata chapal

I think rain or a superhuman effort by the Pakistanis can only save them now.

:oD :oD gr8 news

the last few matches that pakistaon has played at least one player from the oppostion has gotten a big score i dont mean 101 or 115 (fair play to asim though)
i mean BIG SCORE

1st test multan sehwag 309
3rd test pindi dravid 270 or summat

1st test vs sri lanka at fasialabad jayasuriya 250 odd

1st test vs aus langer 190+
2nd test vs aus i think it was martyn
3rd tes vs aus ponting 200+

so i guess we going back around

and then if you look at ours no recent big scores, we are basically a $hit test side we get happy once we pass 100

my point is sehwag's average is about to get another boost

i do hope we can get them out for less that 500

Let's not get negative no doubt india won the day but the match can still be saved.

The fielders need to make sure they wash their hands after breakfast so that their butterfingers don't keep dropping sehwag

2moro is a new day and we'll b in better shape, bcos we r used 2 being down, it will take a performance from sum1 but i think we r unpredictable enough 2 come up with sumting like that.

I mean Rain Rain more rain tomorrow!

Did someone say Rani ?

They didn't even have to swing by miles to get Sehwag out early, just by bowling close to off stump with little bit of movement would have done the trick. It shows that there was no plan to combat the batsmen and that's why Rana & Sami just went for all out pace rather than L&L.

Fielders did their best to keep pressure on themselves |-F |-F

Although Sehwag was brutal but even Afridi would have scored a hundred against our bowlers after getting 2 chances.
I don't really have high hopes from this match now, even if miracle happens tomorrow and we manage to bowl them out for 400 or something, we will still crumble against Kumble in 2nd inning and throw it away easily.

Well it doesn't help if you had 2 easy catches dropped this was never going to help the bowlers either. Had sehwag been caught this could have been a totally different match.

Sami started really well and than sehwag did a Afridi can't really blame the bowlers because no matter where they had put the ball it would have been smacked around unless he had been out and we missed our 2nd chances as well.

However razzaq kept it tight along with Danish who was our best bowler today!

I think it is unfair to just jump the gun though...Afridi took glenn n lee to the cleaners who are far better bowlers than sami n rana. No one ever really had a problem than.

Afridi is improving now but sehwag tends to it more often than Afridi so I am just waiting for him to get out very soon...so this should provide us with a little chance of getting back in specialy if it rains in the morning hours tommorrow.

I would happily take a draw here :)

Sehwag is a far superior player to Afridi. He was facing the new ball and basically playing regular cricketing shots - the cuts and drives. Not to forget he averages over 50 in test match cricket.

As predicted by many not much play was possible today and when they eventually started India dominated from the start ripping Pakistan's pathetic attack apart.I've never liked Mohammad Sami as a bowler cos he never gets any swing despite the overcast conditions though i'm not suggesting he be dropped for we have no one better currently available.Rana and Razzaq struggled just as badly making Danish the only bowler to have walked away with any credit. Why oh why is it that we drop the simplest of chances like Veeru was let off the hook twice and now stands about ten runs from another breathtaking ton.Sorry folks if you don't take catches then you don't deserve to win but what dissapoints me evenmore is the dismissive body-language of our players after missing a sitter or i wonder if they're still getting paid by bookies for doing this!.With Saurav,Laxman and Sachin still too come its not looking good for our boys. What they need is a serious kick up the backside so Bob Woolmer lets get started buddy.. |-J

Firstly, I don't drink Pepsi! I hate it! It's all about Coca Cola!

Secondly, am I wrong? The best we can hope for is a draw and the greatest chance of that is IF it rains.

For the first time in my life I have seen that India have a better bowling attack than us!

No one is comparing Sehwag to Afridi but my point was that he DOES give chances unlike Dravid,Tendulkar etc and they have to be taken otherwise any most good batsmen in the world will make you pay for that.

:oD!

I saw that last year - problem is if you say that here, people pounce on you with stats about Balajis speed and the "Fake" Pathan etc....

Of course they have the superior bowling. In Kumble and Harbajhan they have two of the finest spinners in world cricket. In Pathan they have someone who SWINGS the new ball appreciably and good back up in Zaheer and Balaji.

Not to forget --they have five of the finest batsmen as well! And the sixth in Ghambir also impressed today.

I wasn't exactly comparing them but giving a reason to why we just have had a bad day!

For me it wasn't just the bowlers fault because they did try lot of things and didn't really matter where they were putting the ball because it was being smacked around everywhere. As few of you already have said that he is better than Afridi than we shouldn't all be that much suprised on why we had such a bad day. After all he was dropped twice forget him imagine Afridi being dropped twice in a ODI or even a test match ofcourse he'll create hell for any bowlers as he has done in the past and so has sehwag

I am still hoping for the best tommorrow though and hoping we can draw these test some how and the fielders need to hold on to these easy catches.

One difference though. Afridi hit out against the old ball in a one day match (end overs). He did very well but then runs are expected at the end.

We got DESTROYED bowling with the new ball in a test match!

:-D

Yes I get your point we need to work hard tomorrow and be more disciplined in the field.

And take our catches when they come. |-F

Aridi did open once upon a time for us :D he did the same thing as he does now with the old to the new ball back than...he just does it more often now though

I don't remember seeing him in a test match but maybe he did something different who knows I always thought he would try to hit everything out of the ground :)

anyway I was just trying to ease the pressure off the bowlers poor souls I do feel bad for them. Specialy those who had catches dropped of them. It could have do so much good for them and us. As we already know no one else was going to do what sehwag did.

glad i had a good nights sleep rather than watch the 'phainty', from what i've read here so far.

Look on the bright side guys, if it wasnt for bad weather India may have had a lead by the end of today. Theyre still 120 odd behind, albeit 9 wickets in hand theyre still not out of the red. Dont underestimate the funniness of the beloved game of cricket!

I never saw any of the action and will give the highlights a miss today - out of interest, how many catches were dropped today ?

Please see the 12:13 pm post by "Marooned" above for a very brief (though very good according to general opinion) summary of the days play.

2 sure ones....

Taufiq - Sehwag
YK - Sehwag

Highest scorer in the match = Sehwag ???

Scoreboard

There was once this martial arts expert, who was found broken, battered, and bleeding in the gutter.

What the haitch, they asked him while applying emergency first aid, you are supposed to have one of the blackest belts there is, so how come you got beaten up so bad?

Well see, the expert went, through bloodied lips, the thing is, they hit me before I had a chance to really get into my martial arts stance; I just didn't have a chance.

Pakistan today knows how that martial arts expert must have felt - coming out to defend what looked like a sizeable score of 312, the team would have taken heart from the rain, that permitted play to begin only 50 minutes before the scheduled tea break.

That rain, wisdom meant, made the score of 312 assume proportions bigger than its numerical value; it opened up a juiced pitch for exploitation by the Mohammad Sami-led attack; it put a few doubts in the minds of Indian batsmen.

It did all of that - until the umpires finally called play and Sami ran in for the first over. A four by Gautam Gambhir, another by Virender Sehwag, and suddenly, two strokeplayers were ganging up and beating up on the Pak bowlers before they, and their skipper, had a chance to get set and get into the game.

Pakistan had chances - two of them. In the fifth over of the innings, Sami produced a delivery that was quick, outside off, with the barest of away movement; Sehwag had a swish, got the thick edge and Taufeeq Umar, at second slip, grassed a regulation head high catch after getting the ball in the head high reverse clip. India's score then was 22, Sehwag on 16.

Later - very much later - Kaneria in the 30th over tossed one up outside the off stump, inviting the lavish drive. Sehwag obliged, opening his shoulders and letting fly. The ball, which generated bite off the deck thanks to good loop and flight, turned, took the edge, and flew to slip - where Younis Khan snatched at the ball rather than wait for it, got it on the heel of his hand, and watched it pop out again, with Sehwag then on 82, and India on 157/1.

One life for a batsman as destructive as Sehwag can be, is luxury - let him off twice, and you get to thinking, if the fielding side wants to see Sehwag bat so much they won't get him out, then heck, they deserve all they get.

Gambhir and Sehwag started positive, and stayed that way, in their own contrasting styles.

Sehwag was all power and aggression, waiting on his hind legs and using that high back lift, and tremendous bat speed, to club the ball through the off cordon, behind point, through the slip-gully cordon and once, in the 8th over, off Naved ul Hassan, up and over the third man boundary.

Gambhir, at the other end, was all lanquid grace. Tight in defense, he time and again glided onto the front foot when the bowlers pitched up, and played a succession of classy drives in the arc between cover point and mid off, that left the field standing and even his partner applauding in appreciation.

What was most remarkable about the association, though, was their understanding. Time and again, one or the other would play the ball down with soft hands - a look at the partner, a nod, and they would hare across for the quick, well judged single that rotated strike between the left and right hander, kept the bowlers from settling down, and kept the pressure right on the fielding side.

Gambhir, thus, had 9 singles in his innings of 41; Sehwag has 27, no less, in his innings of 95 off 121 deliveries.

Again, look at Gambhir's stats - 41 off 46 meant that though he was no Sehwag, he was scoring at an Australian clip, from the opener's position, and ensuring that the pressure Sehwag brought to bear at one end was not dissipated at the other.

His wagon wheel is indicative of how Gambhir bats - like most classical openers, he gets the bulk of his runs through the off cordon - 9 in the arc from third man to point, and 17 in the coverpoint-extra cover arc.

Sehwag - 4 twos, 2 threes, 12 fours and one six in his 121 ball effort - was eclectic in where he hit the ball. 23 of his runs, including the six, came behind the wicket on the off side; 34 were through the arc between point and cover, including six clubbed drives to the boundary; four runs came through the mid off region and five through mid on, 9 through midwicket, and 20 behind the wicket on the on side with deft flicks, glides, and that patented whip off his hips.

Between them, they destroyed every bowler - thus, if Sewhag was particularly severe on Naved ul Hassan, blasting 35 runs off 35 balls faced from that bowler including five fours and one six, then Gambhir was equally harsh on Sami, blasting him for 29 off 29 balls faced, including five fours, mostly silken drives through the off cordon.

For Pakistan, only two bowlers impressed. While Sami and Hassan banked on pace and where ritually dismembered, Abdul Razzaq brought sanity to the proceedings by slowing the pace down, bowling mostly from very close to the stumps, keeping the line wicket to wicket, and ensuring that the batsmen did not for the most part have too much room for their shots (32 balls to Sehwag yielded just 21 runs, including 3 fours; Sehwag for the most part was forced to score in ones (5) and twos (2).

The standout, though, was Kaneria. Given the ball as early as the 11th over - a one day-style bowling change, in keeping with the one-day pace at which the openers were going - Kaneria from the first over tossed the ball up, showing great control over flight; looping the ball high so it hit the deck and bit into it, and thus getting turn that was at times prodigious.

Kaneria proved to be the sole wicket-taker on the day. In his first spell of two overs, before tea, Gambhir had danced down the track to a delivery and lofted him high over wide mid on for a one bounce four. When he was brought back into the attack after tea, Gambhir to the first delivery danced down again - but Kaneria kept that delivery flatter, and quicker; as a result, Gambhir failed to get under the ball and get the elevation he needed. The opener's flat hit went straight to mid on and Naved ul Hassan went down on his haunches to hold well (113/1).

The most notable aspect of that first wicket partnership was the overall pace of run getting -- the first fifty of the innings came off a fast 53 balls; the second fifty, if anything, was even faster, off just 48 deliveries (India's third fifty, thanks to the loss of a wicket, plus tighter bowling by Kaneria in particular, was to take 77 deliveries).

The corruscating brilliance of strokeplay by the two openers was what took the fight out of the Pakistan side -- by the 15 over, with India's score already in the nineties, the fielding side was reduced to the sort of spread out formations and defensive setings that would have been more appropriate for a one day chase on a good batting track, than day two of a Test defending 312.

Dravid, the one drop batsman, started with a fluent cut through point. While never as aggressive as Gambhir, the Indian vice-captain ensured, with some clean driving on the on and cutting through point, that he didn't release the pressure the opening pair had piled on the Pak bowlers.

When the umpires figured light was fading too drastically to permit play to continue, Sehwag was batting 95 off 121 deliveries; and Dravid had made 39 off 80.

Forty overs had been bowled in the day; leaving the game, at the end of day two, some 50 overs in deficit. India closed on 184/1 - just 128 behind Pakistan, with nine wickets in hand and, by any yardstick, comfortably in the driver's seat.

For India, day three would need to be about consolidation at speed, with the team looking to rapidly erase the deficit, if possible in the extended first session, and to then bat Pakistan out of the game before stumps are drawn.

For Pakistan, the ask is tricky - somehow, they have to breathe fresh life into a battered bowling lineup; somehow, they have to find ways of containing, and dismissing, the Indian batsmen; somehow, they have to find a way to make their catches stick.

Somehow, they have to find a way back out of the hole the bats of Sehwag and Gambhir dug for them today.

No , cant be bothered to create another thread !! We decided to lump in all end of day analysis into this thread.

ok, so almost 50 overs lost to bad weather so far?
india still scored at an amazing rate, so the effect only slightly negated. what we need is for sehwag to get out early, another 50+ overs to be lost over the course of the next 3 days, and our batsmen to play out 5 sessions.

hope remains.

what's the weather forecast, anyone know?

Since this Pakistani team is probably the poorest i can remember the selectors should consider bringing the oldies like Waz,Vicky and Miandad back into the fold!.If they refuse then why not give our girls a go in their shalwar-kamiz and bangles for they couldn't possibly do any worse then the "men".We could continue to moan about our performance on day two but lets give the Indian's credit for they're an awesome batting team with every kind of player. Its the first time i saw Gautam Gambhir in action and was impressed by his strokeplay, already he looks far better then anything we have to offer.I'm not being funny or sarcastic when i say that it would be great if we could dismiss them for 500 but personally i believe they'll eventually feel sorry for us and declare |-Q .

All the Shoaib haters must be very happy shurely?

You have got what you wanted a dynamic team who all play for each other with no superstars or for that matter anyone with any talent. They aren't being distracted by going out to nightclubs (because obviously that is intrinsically evil to you uneducated morons with backward views) and they are being coached by a white man (gasp! wow a white man is coaching us, never mind his dodgy credentials we must all bow to his superior judgement)

Sounds like you miss Shoaib....

I'm still glad Shoaib ain't playing though accept he may have got us a wicket or two more!.His pace and inaccuracy combined with the fast outfield would probably have resulted with the Indians reaching 300 today! |-G .

Gee do you reckon? I think we might all miss him more when India are 700 for 2 at stumps tomorrow.

Although I realise my opinion is in a minority shared only by educated and intelligent cricket commentators such as Imran Khan, Mushtaq, Intikhab Alam etc etc

While you Shoaib haters are in the majority of deluded backward and ignorant and led by Freemason Bob who obviously has the best interests of Pakistan at heart.

Shoaib is NOT fit - is that so difficult to grasp ? He could have bowled 10 overs today for 100 runs and 2 wickets and then collapsed in a heap - we DONT need that right now.

And frankly I find your attitude towards fellow PPers a little OTT so pipe down and give it a rest.

I think a half fit Shoaib would still be better than any of these guys.

I think a half fit Irshad would be better than these guys!

Interestingly enough it is Imran Khan of all people who stated that he himself told Shoaib not to tour since he wasn't fit. The others you mentioned said that Pakistan will 'miss' Shoaib. And not doubt we will but no one (except you perhaps) said that an unfit Shoaib should play!

And you read between the lines ? Dont insult our intelligence here pls! The only thing I read between your lines is your inane level of support for Shoaib.

This forum has some good supporters of Shoaib ( Farhad being one and AJ the latest one ) - if you can argue without name calling - pls do.

Yes my intelligent friend, because if he is fit and taking wickets no one will be able to make him a scapegoat. But they can if he breaksdown after five overs.

Are you advocating sending an unfit Shoaib Akhtar my intelligent friend? With an injured hamstring? Do you, my intelligent friend, really believe Imran or any one who understands bowlers want an injured fast bowler playing - especially with a hamstring problem?

what do u guys think is the solution for getting rid of our downfall in World Cricket!?

really i can't think of any solution except for changing our chutiya Coach!

Doh!! Not the coach !! The players cannot hold catches, play bad shots etc....BW cannot fix everything - the same players will make an appearance with a new coach - with the same problems.....

Marooned how dare you question our intelligent friend? I mean he is one of the only view intelligent people who have come to PP lately and if our intelligent friend keeps that up he will be in our intelligent list of folks here on PP.

Hey J.C...just cos many don't want Shoaib in the team doesn't mean we "hate" him so your hero need not flatter himself by thinking that!.Imran Khan too had a playboy image yet all Pakistanis love him but its just that purely as a cricketer i don't rate Shoaib!.Also just cos a person dislikes clubbing doesn't make them "backward" or "uneducated" so get over that one mate!.No one's perfect here so lets leave such judgement's to Allah(s.w.t).

our team failed for ONE day. we shud change the COACH, CAPTAIN, BOWLERS, FIELDERS, PHYSIO, SWEEPER, GATEKEEPER, TICKET MASTER, AND THE PRESIDENT.

1) taken out ur oozi and put 500 holes in him
2) non chalantly say "yeah, India finally giving us some competition after 60 years. About time, isnt it?"

if i shot him who would do my work

Awright,as I had mentioned in my earlier posts, Sehwag making a difference. The Pak Pak bowlers had a wicket juiced up by rain, moisture in the wicket, overcast conditions..Yet,Sehwag rendered the conditions irrelevant. What was very interesting is his game in the last 30mins..He seemed to make a conscious effort to preserve his wicket for tomorrow..A lesson learnt perhaps from the test-match at Melbourne when he had the Aussie bowlers at his mercy scoring 195 and trying to hoick a six to get to 200 off the second last over of the day..He holed out and Ind collapsed the next morning and went on to lose the test and lose the chance of winning in Aus.

That test should provide some hope to Pak..50 overs have been lost and there are just 3 days remaining..Ind 's only hope of winning is to bat the whole of tomorrow and a bit on the 4rth day to get a lead of around 250 and try to bowl Pak out.

Pak has to play better than their first innings.Ind are doing great but they are still behind Pak's target. So the match isnt as one-sided as it looks currrently. The team which takes the initiative on the third ady morning will have a good chance of forcing the issue.

Again, the dangerman for Pak is Sehwag on the third day.If he stays even for one hour, that should be enough for the likes of Sachin,Lax,Ganguly to come into bat when conditions are sunny and a great start.

team failed for just ONE day? |-K

r u really following Pakistani cricket for last year or so or u just started watching them from this Test?..what do u think of Pak's performance in Test series against Australia, what abt the first test against Srilanka, what abt the VB series finals? the final of Paktel Cup, the semi-final of Champions Trophy, final of videocon cup in Holland and Asia Cup?

do u think those were good performances!..we failed miserably in all those BIG matches and series!

its enough now to change the team management again!..
