WI bowled out for 345 - scintillating innings by Lara and promise of fireworks by Afridi - are we looking forward to today ? Yes !!!

Pakistan resume at 22/0....

i for one just cannot wait for it begin!!!

hope the weather will be warm and sunny...i also hope windies show real fight in the field and bowl fast and to the best of their ability...but all batsman to contribute and score big!!! prefer for us to make big runs against bowlers who are giving 100pct and that too against guys bowling arnd 90 mph because that will show that our batsman are progressing and doing better and better with each outing! better this then a pointless 100 against a toothless attack!

afridi vs edwards (or any windies bowler) is a tentalising prospect!

Guys - I know many will be reading this but spare a few moments to pray for the souls of the dead in the Islamabad blast - May ALLAH forgive their sins and grant them a place in Jannah, Ameen ! ( full story of the blast is in TimePass) Thanks.

Pak should today look to play there normal cricket but not take too many risks before lunch. Afridi very unlikley to be there for 1 hour or more. Hopefully he will and Pak will go on to win.

sanjay said it best " afridi just not good enough"

on a realted note, i don't know who is good enough in this line-up to negotiate edwards swing and pace.

wat the hell??

why was he in such a rush?

even more than that, why is he opening the innings?

:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Good bowling by Fidel - he's bowling with swing and pace

The decision to open with Afridi has backfired

Afridi needs to play big shots to survive. He needs to chance his arm.

If hegot out getting squared up I would be disappointed. If on the other hand a full stroke went to hand then I would say bad luck.

Why on earth did Woolmer/YK send (1) the most unstable batsman in the universe (or in light of the M-theory, universes) (2) to face the fastest fit bowling attack in cricket today, (3) bowling with the new ball, (4) with only 4 overs of play left in the day and (5) - with 2 specialist openers in the team already!?!

Noddy, who in management had the massive stroke?!

OHH here we go, if he smackd a hundred ud b the oppositw shut up and watch the game

If he makes a hundred all of us will enjoy the innings, but u can't get away from the fact that afridi is not equipped to play up the order in test matches.
I can understand using him as an opener as the situation dictates((like against india in the third test), but sending him in yesterday when there were only 4 overs left was illogical.

Was that a defensive stroke?

From cricinfo:
"4.3 Edwards to Shahid Afridi, OUT: Superb ball, full and late outswing,
squared Afridi who did not seem to have the technique to handle
such a ball, edged to third slip and Devon Smith holds a good
catch low"

I think you can visualize exactly what happened as we've seen it many times before.

Could someone explain then what is the point of Afridi being down the order?

I think he got out to some sort of a defensive stroke.
Looked ugly.

It was a great delivery by Edwards

So that he can have his way with the bowlers bowling with the old ball - ie massacre them. The decision to open with him yesterday is very peculiar

Some people always find a way to complain...people get over it...earlier everyone was happy that he is opening and now this...give me a break

BTW, how in heck WI attack the "Fastest and Fittest attck" in cricket...last time I checked, WI have lost gazillion One Dayers in a row and not to forget the numerous test defeats too :O :)?

Thanks Marooned!

Here is what I wrote before the start of play:

"
In my opinion, if he does two of the following things he has a better chance of lasting longer:

1) Avoid playing defensively on off stump. He should look to go hard at the ball on off stump.

2) Try to hot straighter to avoid those leading edges. In fact, part of his resurgence now is that he does look to hit over cover and mid off more than he used to
"

His defensive play on off stump is low percentage batting. Hitting through the line would be much better for him.

just brings up the question of who is making these decisions. Is it YK? Bob? even Inzi? Do I hear someone say "the bookies"?

DM doesnt the old ball swing a lot also. And there is the potential of the new ball bring bought also.

Monsee in my Afridi thread, you'll see i posted this same paragraph last night

And i didn't say "Fastest and Fittest attack" - i said "Fastest fit attack - ie NOT Akhtar and Sami. And their defeats have absolutely nothing to do with how fast they are.

DM, paradoxically, if I were to ask Afridi to open, I would ask him to play even more attacking shots - especially on off stump.

He is likelier to survive longer, and is likelier to get more runs.

His defensive play on off stump - getting squared on - is low percentage. But with his physical strength, hitting through the line, sometimes getting hold of it, other times getting an edge will be a better percentage.

I agree but it's test cricket and how long he lasts matters quite a bit. With a new ball and a good bowler up front (though there are few in the world left these days) it just becomes a tad difficult.

Not asking him to open may be a good option. After all we are going to face Harmison and Flintoff soon.

Agreed FP - especially to fuller deliveries - as was the one that dismissed him

It's such a sick feeling seeing Afridi getting dismissed - Afridi for 200 in 2nd innings :D

If its moving around, they will need some luck to survive.

No batsman likes movment - not at pace.

windies are troubling us with their pace and outswingers.. hameed looks completely lost

Salman playing extremely well...

20 of his 21 runs have come off boundaries...meaning 5 4's already

maybe the slingy action of fidel is bothering hameed
or maybe the movement ..
or maybe the pace ...

NOT A PRETTY SIGHT !!!

10.1 Edwards to Yasir Hameed, no run, steps out and drives, ball came in
and got the inside edge onto the pads and past off stump, Hameed
in lots of trouble out there

I feel for him

it really makes you wonder why we decided to open with Afridi, the most technically adept batsman in the universe at coping with high pace and swing TM

11.2 Powell to Salman Butt, no run, left alone as its clear that Salman
seems confident but Hameed is tentative with the swinging ball"

yup thats exactly whats happening... commentators are cutting up hameed pretty bad

and hammed is now out too...technically lloked almost as bad as afiridi..atleast if afridi hangs about he is gonna score heavily...

I hope Hamid does well....
Dropping in and out of the team, and then being sent in at a difficult time (ball swinging) does seem pretty hard on him...
hope he does well...

oops.....!
spoke to soon...!!!

Poor Hameed .. always looked out of his depth!!!

Pak in deep trouble here ... with 2 wickets down!

As I said yesterday .. the ball is going to continue to swing and seam ...
LETS see how many of our batsmen are MEN amongst the boys!!!

So, had BW and Inzi been thinking with your GENIUS approach to Pakistan cricket, Younis Khan would have been out of Pak cricket well before even the Indian series..

So how do you feel at the moment. I wonder who you would have batting for us right now in this situation.

Interesting to remember that some here were comparing Hameed with Tendulkar after he had some success on the flattest of tracks against the ordinary Indian attack last year.

Amazing how people change opinions here.

This message was for AJ!

This is how Yasir Out!!

WI just gifted Butt a life .. dropped by Sarwan in 2nd slip .. . i think he has a hangover ... idiot .. it was a simple 1st slip catch.

Butt dropped... well well... looks like Pak batsmen need major coaching on how to play swing!

they're saying edwards might have a back injury
That'll be a huge let-off for us. It's a pity Afridi had to face him when he was at full pelt

I knew, I was just pulling your leg...how can a sane person be an Indian fan especially since you have to be about 25 years old to remember an overseas win by your team >:) >:) :)))
