Exactly 33 years ago on this day, the greatest of underdog stories unfurled in cricket. Kapil Dev lifted India's first ever world cup from the Lord's balcony, defeating the mighty Clive Lloyd's West Indies in the final of the 1983 world cup.:kapil:viv:holding

------------------------------------------------

June 25, 1983, saw a nation in frenzy. The unthinkable had happened! Yes, India, the underdogs of ODI cricket, had overcome the champions West Indies to win the World Cup.

The reason I say unthinkable is because not even the most passionate Indian fan could have predicted that they would win the tournament. The Windies were champions in 1975 and 1979, while India had been knocked in the first round on both occasions.

Defending a mere 183 at Lord's, India won by 43 runs for their first crown and denied Clive Loyd's men a hat-trick.

India were put into bat and lost Sunil Gavaskar in the first over. It took Krishnamachari Srikkanth (38), Mohinder Amarnath (26) and Sandeep Patil (27) to push the runs. From 90/2 they slipped to 130/7 before the tail wagged to make it 183.

184 was never going to be a daunting target and Viv Richards was in a hurry to get it over with. But on 33, a mistimed pull was beautifully caught by Kapil Dev, and till date it is rated as one of the best. 50 for 1 slipped to 76/6 and suddenly history looked to be in the making.

Like the Indians, the Windies lower order came to the party but with the score on 140, Amarnath trapped holding lbw and it was all over! The scenes that followed were unbelievable as the crowd surged onto the field, and players hugged each other.

On the Lord's balcony, it was jubilation while in India, the people celebrated their greatest cricket moment with gusto. The look of shock on the losers' faces said it all - the West Indies domination was nearing its end (they have never made it to the final since).

Historic day for Asian Cricket. Inspired the likes of Imran, Ranatunga and Dhoni to follow Kapil sir's footsteps.

The day when our cricket changed for the better. Inspired a young Sachin to take up cricket seriously resulting in a positive chain reaction whose effects we are still seeing and will see in the future as well..

For people who wonder what the chain reaction is - read Sehwag, Dhoni, Kohli and the likes..

Kapil pa'ji,Imran vai,Mr.Ranatunga,Dhoni,(BD player),(Afghan player)....ud be great for Asian cricket....

Greatest upset and biggest world cup victory ever. India broke the hegemony of WI and colonial masters in their own game.
Thatd why i rate kapil ad best captain everbfrom subcontinent

Just checked.. It is happening in India.

Would be a great chance for you guys as sc sides will be favourites.

Wow...that's great...it would be great chance for bd...but we will have to give our best shot to achieve it...though it would be very tough for bd to beat the host at their own den...

Great read. England seems to be the only place where our fast bowlers come to the party. (WC'83, CT'13) Seeing the next two major tournaments are in England, hope we further improve our trophy cabinet.

Good to see others appreciate it. There will always be some idiots, but overall both countries (India and Pak) respect each others achievements.

IIRC, Imran has stated that Kapil's win in 83 WC inspired Imran to win a WC for his country. Kapil on the other hand also stated that Imran was the better all-rounder. Its only us idiots on online forums who seem to have problem in digesting each others successes.

Kapil Paaji - the greatest ODI cricketer to emerge from the subcontinent.

There hasn't been a better combination of bowling, batting, fielding and captaincy.

:kapil

Remember the game well.
Brilliant catch by Kapil bhai - give India belief.
My Indian friends were giving out a lot of free delicious food that night!
Memorable celebrations

Great achievement for the time especially considering the relative strengths.

No Sachin? :))

Conditions suit perfectly

And generally Indian batsmen are adept enough to do well in such conditions

To be fair that's hyperbole as tests back then were even greater and important than today so a one day win wouldn't break any hegemony as such

thats a good point but i think just like today T20 are not very important but are more famous , same way newer shorter format of ODI was more popular back then.

Still winning it was a big feat.

ofcourse

No Sachin? :))

Sachin is the greatest batsman to emerge from the subcontinent in ODIs so far (not for long though, Kohli will overtake him), but as a cricketer, his lack of ruthlessness and poor leadership skills leave a lot to be desired.

Kapil Paaji was a lion heart and brought glory to India against the very best of all time at the tender age of 24, something that alluded Tendulkar till 2011.

*eluded.

P.S.: Sorry for being a grammar nazi:inzi

Historic day for Asian Cricket. Inspired the likes of Imran, Ranatunga and Dhoni to follow Kapil sir's footsteps.

It was a historic day for South Asian Cricket but inspiring other SA teams is going a bit too far. I doubt if anything would be different now in Sri Lanka or Pakistan even if India did not win.

You are right.

It's very hard to inspire the South African teams in world cups.

I think Imran Khan said something like India's win in 83 inspired him to win one for his country

Choked lol?

I'm sure you scored the match winning century in the 79 final and not you

There's only one choker in WC finals and we all know that is Sachin :srt

Dhoni is the greatest ODI cricketer from Asia and probably the world.

A close call, but my top 3 Asian ODI cricketers are:

1) Kapil
2) Dhoni
3) Wasim

From current generation, Kohli will make the top 3 one day if he excels as captain.

If he fails as captain, he would be ranked alongside Sachin.

On this day - India won the World Cup Finals in 1983

On this day in 1983, Kapil Dev and his India side made history, as they won the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time. Lord’s was the scene for India’s greatest cricketing triumph at the time, as they beat two-time winners West Indies by 43 runs to lift the coveted trophy.

Their route to the final saw them comfortably make it through Group B with four wins from six, before seeing off hosts England at Old Trafford in the semi-final.

They came up against the Windies in the final – who were on the hunt for a hat-trick of World Cup titles – but were to be shocked by a determined Indian bowling line-up.

First Asian country or rather first country other than West Indies to win the world cup that point of tine....followed it up with a multi country Benson and hedges cup in 1985 where probably colored clothing was introduced to the world of cricket.

I was lucky to watch Semi's and finals of 83 WC pretty much in its entirety.
No single event had greater impact on subcontinent cricket than this. Especially in ODI's. It was the catalyst of commercialization of Asian cricket. This lead to India-Pakistan hosting Fourth World Cup.

Considering that the next world cup will be played immediately after the IPL, Do you think this will affect the Indian team? Surely at least some of the players will be exhausted after playing so many IPL games, some might even pick up injuries.

In order to ensure Indian players are mentally and physically fit for the World Cup, I think BCCI should reschedule the IPL AFTER the World Cup.

The following are the schedules of the the two tournaments.
IPL: 29 March to 19 May 2019.
World Cup: 30 May to 14 July 2019

This is your post from 2016. And in 2 years, you called even India's WC 1983 victory as a fluke to appear unbiased. :))

The win that changed Cricket forever.

Thank you Kapil Paaji :kapil and the boys

By next year hopefully Ranveer Singh's movie 1983 will be released where he is playing the role of Kapil paaji

apparently this is the game which made cricket big in india

prior to it it wasnt a mass sport

My father says that the craze for cricket was always there in India even before the 1983 World Cup.

More than that it killed mass interest in hockey and football, and yup we were pretty decent in football once upon a time though it may come as a shock to some.
