He turns 56 today.
A batsman, a coach, and a PCB Official. This sums up various capacities that Miandad has served Pakistan cricket in.
Without a doubt, Miandad is one of the best batsman produced by Pakistan, if not the best. He made his ODI debut against West Indies in 1975 and his Test debut against New Zealand in 1976. Between the two formats, he has accumulated over 16,000 runs. He is also Pakistan's highest run scorer in Test cricket, a feat only Inzamam came close to, but fell short of breaking.
On Javed Miandad's batting - his stroke play was different than that of a traditional test player of that era. He did, however, have all the shots in the book. He had the great ability to improvise and brought innovation to his batting, including mastering the reverse sweep. Miandad was a player who could easily play according to the situation and absorb pressure. He had a systematic approach to his batting and when at the crease, he was very good at rotating the strike and keeping the scorecard ticking.
Not only was Miandad a smart batsman, he also had a very sharp cricketing mind. Despite their differences, Imran Khan has appreciated and acknowledged Miandad's role as vice-captain and his role in making key on-field decisions.
On that note, here's wishing Javed Miandad a very Happy Birthday and best of luck for the year ahead!
