In the opening match of the Paktel Cup in Multan, Pakistan avoided an embarrassing defeat when they were facing Zimbabwe.
Pakistan went in with two debutants, Bazid Khan and Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and elected to bat after winning the toss. The move seemed to backfire, however, as Pakistan collapsed to 36/4 in front of the home crowd.
That is when skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq put together an excellent partnership of 95 runs. The captain scored 73, before being dismissed via LBW. Out came wicket-keeper Moin Khan, but he was stumped shortly having scored 7 runs.
That is when the fireworks started. At this point, Pakistan were 146/6 after 39.5 overs. They had recovered, but still needed to give their bowlers a solid target to defend.
Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi proceeded to smash Zimbabwe's bowlers all over the park. In the end, Abdul Razzaq finished on 107* off of 114 balls. Shahid Afridi would finish with 58 off of 26 balls. Rana Naved-ul-Hasan also contributed with a quick-fire 16 off 8 balls.
Pakistan had managed to reach 292/7 from their 50 overs.
In reply, Zimbabwe's batsman weren't up to the task in the face of bowling from Shoaib Akhtar, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, and Shahid Afridi.
Abdul Razzaq was rightly named the 'Man of the Match' in Pakistan's 144-run victory.
