"Once or twice the Australians had a few words to say to me but I ignored it" : Haris Sohail

"In the England series, I was out in the 30s but I learnt a lot from those scores"

"My intention was to move on forward from those types of scores and thankfully I have done that"

"The excitement of scoring your first 100 in Test cricket is completely different than one I have at any other occasion"

"As you all know I struggled a lot with problems with my knee and fixed other things that were not working for me"

"The score today was our target in the first place; this is a pitch where its not easy to score runs as its slow and the outfield is heavy as well"

"I am a very polite person so I didnt even look at them [Australians]; Once or twice they did talk to me but I ignored it" [Actual Urdu : Idhar say sunna, aur udhar say nikalnay wallee baat thee]

"There was a point that the seam had opened up on the ball but they refused to take the new ball so the ball was so soft that we could not score runs easily"

"Even middling the ball wouldnt allow the ball to go past the circle"

"We were thinking that there will be a time when they will take the new ball and we will be able to score runs with ease"

"And that's what happened, when they took the new ball, we started to score more"

"Even though there werent that many supporters, I could still hear them chant 'Haris Haris'"

"In a sense it was good that there were less people as you know, you cant hear your name in a large crowd"

"The reason for me playing at 4 was we wanted a left-right handed pair at the crease at that point as they have Lyon and another spinner also"

"I have been out before in 30s, sometimes I got a good ball and other times I panicked, so I wanted in this innings I had the intention of not panicking and then things would get better for me"

Good day for Haris today - hopefully this is a start of something better for him.

What an amazing feat!

Of course they'll have things to say and that's why the Aussie brand of cricket is amazing. True cricket.

Our players are meek and timid. Just ignore. Not able to reply in English does not help either.

Long gone are the days of players from our team that the world admired.

Good innings from Haris Sohail, I predicted today would be his first hundred, well played!

It was Mitch Starc who was sledging, I saw it. It is always starc who sledges every game. He just cannot keep his mouth shut. especially when him and aussie bowlers are getting hammered.

I find it strange how rabada was suspended by icc numerous times, but not once has icc had anything to say about starc.

Not sure if he would have understood what they were saying!

Regardless, a masterful innings by Haris

Rabada was fined for giving batsmen send-offs. Starc plays it smart. He sledges but doesn't give obvious send-offs.

I don't think the Aussies will involve themselves in sledging as much now. Don't think it was anything serious.

Not long before Aussies resort to their full on bullying nature. All that talk by CA, Langer, Paine was hogwash. I won't blame them because even Indian players are lippy, just that cut off all that moral sermon stuff, you can't change the basic nature of people.

Oh, what happened to Aussies cutting down on sledging? Not sure if Haris Sohail would have understood it anyway. Happy for him scoring a century, hopefully the first of many.

I completely agree. I miss those days when we had confident and aggressive players who would give back with interest. It's sad to see the current crop just turn their backs or look down at the slightest hint of sledging.

Sehwag recently mentioned how all he remembers from his debut game is copping a ridiculous amount of abuse from the Pak players and then getting out in the blink of an eye. Imagine these 'polite' type abusing an incoming batsmen. They'd lay out the red carpet if they could!

Truly meek and timid.

This idea of taking out frustration on the batsman is just childish... Really bad attitude

Its one thing being aggressive and giving the batsman a word after a good ball or whatever, but verbally abusing the opposition is when players start crossing the line and create a bad image for themselves, their team and the sport. I think most players should refrain from pointless abuse/swearing.

Well played, was treat to watch, I think he will score more runs than others in SA tour IA.

Umm, what?

Being aggressive and sledging is PART of the game. Especially for fast bowlers.

If you're not doing that, you're not a good bowler!

Of course it doesn't mean you start saying profanities. That DOES NOT happen. And you're fined if you do that.

The West Indians never sledged during their great period. They didn’t need to.

Good. Right approach. Should concentrate on his batting. We all saw what happened to Amir Sohail when he tried to become a hero.

Read in many autobiographies that they did sledge. Of course it was not 'all the time' sledging..

But I don't think any fast bowler can go without having a go at at least one batsman in a spell.

Glad he scored the ton, I used to be a massive fan of the lad back in 2015 when he was a breath of fresh air in Misbah's tuk tuk eleven. Sad that his career didn't pan out as planned.

Unfortunately he has not been able to make his mark in ODI cricket. In part it is to blame for his own lax attitude and fitness. He could be a good number four bat if he regains his form of 2015.

Aussies always start crying when they are being dished out a right whipping..... nothing to see here.

There is a difference.

Once some batsman (forgot, probably Lamb), cracked couple of boundaries to MM, and made an eye contact ... next over Marshall bowled 4-5 balls, 6 inches below his throat & incoming - batsman had to hustle back to save his Adam's apple. Batsman again look at him, this time almost like asking - what are you trying to do? Marshall politely said that I am trying to make it easy for you to see from closer, and how it smells ....

Similar situation, McGrath asked Sarwan how does it tastes sucking Brain Lara's Co*k? These Aussies are absolute dustbin mouth. And, they are even more vulgar when chips are down - using it as a tactics so that disgusted batsman does something silly.

Look, you tagged me in other thread on this (Moeen Ali), which I didn't response because I don't like character assassination of International players, some of them ATGs. But Aussies are dirty on field - you can't compare with anyone.

Every team, every fast bowler sledges - it's part of the game & I have said many times that I was happy in pre-match referee era. But, there is a limit of every thing - players have family issues, relationship issues, secrets (something silly that they did in past, now it'll be a embarrassing for them is disclosed in public) in their personal life which is known to their circle. You'll never hear Indian players mocking Malik regarding his first marriage or PAK player taunting Sandeep Patil ..... something like that - these Aussies will do exactly that and put color on it, if the batsman threatens them with his game and they'll do it collectively - backing each other.

I have seen Marshall, Imran, Kapil, Hadlee, Akram, Donald ..... Botham ... using foul languages, sometimes aggressively charging to batsmen - but then you'll see some senior players like Javed, Sunny, Viv or Gower will pull them back, make gestures, body languages to batsmen just to ignore & get on, even apologist sometimes on behalf and the game moves on. Viv, Javed, Sunny or Gower... themselves were not saints - they also did something might not be too polished - may be this time Lloyd, Zaheer, Vishy or Boycott will ridicule the situation and at the end of the day it's ends there.

Not with Aussies - they'll hunt together. From senior most to junior most, everyone will get after the batsman, back each other and make sure that the batsman is completely ****** off; even his partner is uncomfortable while talking with him. Every Aussie was behind Denis Lillee when he kicked Javed- just one extreme example. And, it doesn't matter if the batsmen is someone as respected as Clive Lloyd in his last Series or a 18 years old Tendulkar in his first series. It ended often so ugly that the bad blood continued off the field as well - once Botham beat the hell out of Ian Chappel at a bar after the end of a Day in 1979 series - Chappel had to be carried out.

I told about Nasif in 2005; same year, some how we beat AUS in an ODI at Cardiff (18th June 2005) - Ashraful & Basher put about 150+ in 3rd wicket and Ash made a hundred. Ash was b-kolom then, with yes sir & thanks sir was his limit; but Basher has a masters and guy is extremely polite, he was that time Captain as well. He got out very close to victory and some journalist later asked him about that - Basher joked in reply that, it was probably better for his stomach to leave early before Aussies had lost the game .....

Sledging is fine, but Aussie style "mental disintegration" isn't supported. Aussies take too much chance against players who can't bite back - Ganguly wasn't one of like that, hence Steve Waugh got surprised. And, most nauseating that Aussies start complaining, when they can't digest if someone bold & disgusted enough to match them in reply.

I'm also talking about the kind of sledging that does not involve personal and family attacks. That's a no-go.

Most likely Starc was just doing what every fast bowler does, some tough words. And not personal/family attacks - he's not known for doing that either..

But here you can see, most posters are saying sledging is bad altogether.

Interesting reading. Lamb said the worst he copped was from Richards at slip - ‘No more drive balls Maco, I want him to eat the next one’.

Didn’t hear about Chappelli getting totally battered by Botham - though he just got punched off the bat stool.

I read it somewhere - "..... not many times Ian Chapple had to grovel out of a brawl, but that Melbourne bar incident was one such ...." :) Probably from Gavaskar (Idols) but can't recall now.

You add mother or WAG with that comment of Viv, might reach Aussie level.

Robert, I'm just curious if you're in favor of absolutely no sledging, or just not any personal/family/racist attacks?

I’m fine with banter as long as it is witty. Racism is beyond the Pale.

He can keep wasting his energy. At the end of the day he was the one made to look like a fool with figures of 1/90

I think Australians were just trying to counter the blow-back they received in the aftermath of the whole ball-tempering incident. Where people were suddenly critiquing everything related to their cricket and team culture. I always saw it as temporary lip-service.
