Which team will gain the momentum heading into the Test series after the final day of the side match today?

^wait what? Is it a done deal that each teams bats one day?

It was agreed that each team would only bat 90 overs.

It's why Pakistan A went the slog after 80 overs and why Australia retired Smith at 58 and Doolan after his 100

306/3d - Australia need to score 339 to win.

I reckon Australia won't even care too much about the result of this game. They'd be more worried about Pup and Smith getting some time out in the middle.

Pup and Marsh.

No need for Smith.

Well Clarke is gone too.

I think Rahat Ali will make the test squad.

I have a feeling Australia will lose to Pakistan A and everyone will underestimate them and Pakistan will lose when the actual test comes.

9-2 Australia.

Great. Rahat Ali with a wicket. Now we will have to bear him in the test XI.

So in this match the Australians who have had little match time but will be playing the Test did as follows:

Rogers 0 (1), 3 (5)
Clarke 10 (31), 5 (5)
Doolan 104* (194)
Marsh 0 (3)

That's as good as it could have been for Pakistan.

1) Two of the senior batsmen have hardly scored a run and have faced 6 and 36 deliveries respectively in the middle.
2) Doolan, who is not Test class, has made himself undroppable.
3) Marsh is also not Test class, and has had minimal time in the middle too.

The result is secondary, but the effect of all this on the Australian selection process is terrific for Pakistan.

Then again, having Rahat in the Test eleven is good news for Australia too. They would far rather face him than Junaid or Irfan or Asif or Amir or Wahab - he is effectively at least sixth choice as a fast bowler, and fifth choice for a left-arm fast bowler!

Harsh on Doolan- the alternative is Hughes.

Marsh will also bat again this innings.

Talha getting a phainta, I hope he gets dropped for the 1st test, he is a terrible bowler

Good momentum from Aussies, would be moral boosting for them if they chase this total

Damn it Talha takes a wicket, now we will have to bear mediocrity of Talha and Rahat in st test

The way they are batting- it actually looks like they're trying to chase it down.

Cricinfo really looks confused first they said Ata Ullah bowled that over and now they are saying Adil

First Cricinfo said that Smith was on the crease and now they changed it into Marsh

Smith was probably first on the team sheet but now Marsh is batting instead

Videos of the dismissals are on the cricket Australia website already

I'm guessing that at drinks Hughes and Marsh were told to call down and bat for an extended period of time.

And I don't think that Pup's delivery actually did keep abnormally low: I think he just hasn't acclimatised to the low bounce.

It was like watching an Indian or a Pakistani fencing unnecessarily at balls which are on or outside off in Australia or South Africa.

I agree

Aus should really win this - all they need to do is score 160 or so off the next 50 overs and then hit out the other 100 in 20.

This a 16 a side match so they can use the better batsmen to save blushes.

Winning a 16 a side match with required declarations after 90 overs is meaningless.

What matters is building proper innings as practice for the tests

So this is how Marsh and Hughes will play against Pakistan? I bet you now they'll be a lot more tentative.

If the bowlers bowl lousy then you hit them.

No need to go in unnaturally aggressive just to chase a 'win'

So you would rather prefer Aus not make an effort to chase down the runs and play casually to a loss?

You mean a draw right?

I'd prefer the batsman don't bat unnaturally.

If they bat all day they can have a go for it at the end but at this point no need to get too occupied with the idea of chasing it down

Don't the innings end at 90 overs? i.e. there's a winner at the end.

Who knows.

Certain I'd rather Marsh get 100* from 200 balls than 60 from 75

But on this flat wicket they'll get close enough if they bat out the 90 so after 80 overs just go for it.

Convict is there any room for brother Hughes in the team?

If Australia bat out the 90 overs they should get close to the target.

I still think Pak "A" could win though.

One wicket, and the floodgates could open.

As convict said we need our batsmen just getting used to batting in the uae, trying to slog a win at 5 an over defeats the whole point of this sort of practice match.

If it was a normal first class game it might be different but it's a 16 a side glorified net session.

Australia, what have you done??

Now we will have to bear Rahat Ali during the first test.

Disappointing to see Marsh get out. Needed to build on the start.

Siddle in?

Obviously not chasing the win.

Which makes this kind of interesting Hughes is no chance of playing the tests

and people were saying there is no young talent in pakistan, i.e no young spinners, no young batsmen, no young pacers

well this A match has proven that wrong pakistan a team is up against some high quality seasoned cricketers, if pcb arranges consistent a tours u will find the talent and put nail in coffin off seniors like misbah, afridi and the ttf's that keep on being recycled into the team like farhats, maliks, kamis, sami, iqbals etc of this world.

Rahat Ali gets another one 127/6.

Told you Australia will lose ;-)

that must be their plan... if pakistan plays rahat and talha in the first test, then it is juicy gift for the aussies... it will be like more or less pakistan playing without any pacers...both of them are spray guns... talha will give 5-6 an over in a test match, and he is a 120-130 bowler who cant swing the bowl, i would even take sohail tanivr instead of talha, atleast tanvir can swing the new ball....

Updating my earlier comments:

Rogers 0 (1), 3 (5)
Clarke 10 (31), 5 (5)
Doolan 104* (194)
Marsh 0 (3), 35 (54)

Maxwell and Faulkner are out of contention for Test selection anyway, but consider:

Hughes 14 (43), 65 (107).

I say consider Hughes because there is still an element of doubt around Michael Clarke's ability to last five days, and so Hughes has a chance of playing.

For my part, I don't care who wins, but I'd like to see Australia try to use the day to get on top of the Pakistani bowlers by batting Steve Smith at number 9 and Alex Doolan at number 10. It would make it interesting.

Hughes has no chance of playing. Clarke's backup is Maxwell.
