Cyclone Bipa*rjoy, which is heading towards the coastal areas of Pakistan and India, is likely to intensify into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ during the next 24 hours, officials associated with Pakistan Meteo*rological Depart*ment (PMD) said, advising the authorities concerned to be on high alert as it can cause flooding, particularly in the low-lying areas, among other damages.

According to a PMD alert released around 9.45pm on Saturday, the system was located 840km south of Karachi, 830km south of Thatta and 930km southeast of Ormara.

“The cyclone over the east-central Arabian Sea has formed an eye, indicating that the system has grown more organised and more powerful,” chief meteorologist Dr Sardar Sarfaraz told Dawn.

According to him, the cyclone is currently directed towards the coastal areas of Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar and the adjoining areas of Indian Gujarat.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday urged people to stay away from shorelines as Cyclone Biparjoy, which is heading towards the coastal areas of Pakistan and India, lay at a distance of about 760 kilometres south of Karachi.

According to state-run Radio Pakistan, the NDMA also called on people to follow local authorities’ guidance in any emergency situation. Over the past few days, the Karachi commissioner has banned entry to the beaches in Karachi, as well as fishing, sailing, swimming, and bathing at seas within the territorial limit of Karachi owing to the threat from today till the end of the storm.

It came as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in its daily forecast located the cyclone near latitude 18.1°N and longitude 67.5°E, and said the system is “likely to keep tracking further in the north-northeast direction during next 24 hours”.

The PMD added that the cyclone will then recurve northeastward on June 14 and cross between Keti Bandar (southeast Sindh) and the Indian Gujrat coast. The forecast noted that “dust-raising/gusty winds are expected in central/southern districts of the country” on Sunday and Monday afternoon.

“The cyclone is expected to impact southern and south-eastern parts of Sindh on June 13,” the agency said in a series of tweets.

It warned that cyclones could strong winds, torrential rains, and floods in coastal areas. “People should be aware of weather conditions and avoid going to the beach whereas fishermen should avoid boating in the open sea.”

The NDMA also called on people to follow local authorities’ guidance in any emergency situation.

Over the past few days, the Karachi commissioner has banned entry to the beaches in Karachi, as well as fishing, sailing, swimming, and bathing at seas within the territorial limit of Karachi owing to the threat from today till the end of the storm.

However, a considerable number of people could be seen present at Karachi’s Seaview despite the government’s directives to stay away from the shore.

Biparjoy turns into ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’

Cyclone Bipar*joy has turned into an “extr*emely severe cyclonic storm” and is very likely to cross over the area between Pakistan’s Keti Bandar and Indian Guj*arat on June 15, the Pakistan Meteorological Depar*t*ment (PMD) stated on Sunday.

The system is located at a distance of 690km south of Karachi, 670km south of Thatta and 720km southeast of Ormara, according to PMD’s advisory released on Sunday at 9.45pm.

In a related guideline, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority’s airside department has alerted the relevant officials to ensure safety of lightweight aircraft and other electrical equipment by taking precautionary measures such as mooring of parked light aircraft or re-parking to a safer place.

Also, due to the risk of collision, goods near the runways and tarmac area in Karachi should be moved to a safer place, it has advised.

The National Disaster Mana*ge*ment Authority (NDMA), in coordination with PMD, provincial disaster management authorities (PDMAs) of Sindh and Balochistan, ******tan Navy, Pakistan Maritime Security Authority, Pakistan Coast Guards, has been issuing advisories and guidelines to all stakeholders at national and provincial levels to undertake proactive preparedness and mitigation measures.

“#Biparjoy Cyclone is unpredictable yet categorised as high intensity. Panic is counterproductive but caution and planning are better than being caught unawares,” tweeted Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Sherry Rehman, advising all relevant departments of Sindh and Balochistan to be on ‘high alert’.

Karachi’s Seaview Road was blocked for traffic on Monday to prevent people from heading out into the open sea as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said Bipar*joy, now classified as an “extr*emely severe cyclonic storm”, was around 600km away from the coastal city.

“Abdul Sattar Edhi Avenue has been closed at Sehr junction while traffic from Dolmen Mall, Clifton is being diverted to Khayaban-i-Ittehad via Saba Avenue,” South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Syed Asad Raza told Dawn.com.

“However, traffic from Clock Tower towards Dolmen Mall has been allowed,” he said.

This cyclone is the ticket for PDM government to delay the upcoming elections.

KARACHI: The country’s coastal regions were on high alert on Wednesday, with tens of thousands of people being evacuated to stave off the impact of the cyclone, which is expected to make landfall on Thursday (today).

Biparjoy — currently a “very severe cyclonic storm” — is inching closer to India and Pakistan, prompting authorities to take preventive measures to minimise the damage it may cause to life and property.

The Met department’s advisory released on Wednesday night showed that Biparjoy had moved north-eastwards during the past six hours.

Late on Wednesday night, the cyclone lay at about 310km south of Karachi, 300km south-southwest of Thatta and 240km south-southwest of Keti Bandar.

The cyclone is likely to reduce its strength after hitting the land, but the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has asked fishermen not to venture into the open sea until Saturday.

In a press conference in Islamabad, Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman said the cyclone’s distance from Karachi was increasing as it had veered eastwards, but at the same time warned that it was coming closer to the coastal areas.

The minister cautioned that both thunder and rainstorms were expected to occur, which could cause substantial damage. She urged people, especially in Karachi, to refrain from dabbling in “disaster tourism” and going to the beach to witness the storm and called on them to cooperate with authorities.

Sindh largely spared as cyclone hits India’s Gujarat coast

• Winds up to 125kmph recorded on India’s shoreline
• Biparjoy becomes longest-lived weather system in Arabian Sea
• Experts say storm may move towards Keti Bandar, Rajasthan

KARACHI: Howling gales and crashing waves pounded the coastline of Pakistan and India on Thursday as Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat, and was on course to reach Sindh’s Keti Bandar area early on Friday.

The cyclone came ashore as a Category 1 storm and Pakistan’s coastal areas, including Karachi, remained largely spared.

Forecasters in both countries warned that Biparjoy, whose name means “disaster” in Bengali, was likely to devastate homes and tear down power lines as it barrels through India’s western state of Gujarat, where it made landfall near the port of Jakhau.

Low-lying roads started to flood on Thursday afternoon after hours of rain. Gusting winds blew sheets of water that reduced visibility with a dull grey mist.

More than 175,000 people, including 82,000 in Pakistan, fled the storm’s predicted path.

Biparjoy was also on course to becoming the longest-lived cyclone in the Arabian Sea, overtaking Kyarr in 2019, which lasted nine days and 15 hours, according to India’s Meteorological Department.

As of June 14, the Arabian Sea had sustained Biparjoy for over eight days. Warm sea surface temperatures have contributed to the cyclone’s unusually long lifespan.

Its landfall continued late in the night and was followed by brief and long spells of wind and dust storms and thundershowers along Sindh’s coast, temporarily disconnecting land access to some coastal towns.

Light showers were recorded in Karachi’s Clifton, Defence Housing Authority, Sharea Faisal, Keamari and other areas.

Life returns to normal as Biparjoy dissipates

• Minister says Pakistan was prepared, but largely spared
• Ban on going into open sea lifted; seawater starts receding from Keti Bandar

KETI BANDAR: Life began returning to normal on Sindh’s coast after days of panic and preparations ahead of Biparjoy’s landfall, with the storm packing sustained winds of up to 125 kilometres per hour as it struck India’s Gujarat on Thursday, but then weakening overnight.

More than 180,000 people in Sindh and the neighbouring Indian state of Gujarat fled the path of Biparjoy — which means “disaster” in Bengali — before it made landfall.

Pakistan was largely spared of the storm’s effects and no lives were lost. However, water levels did increase in some coastal areas.

“Pakistan was prepared but largely spared the full force,” Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman tweeted on Friday morning. “Sindh’s coastal areas like Sujawal were inundated by high sea levels, but most people had been evacuated to safe ground.”
