Pakistan Cricket Board and the players on a collision course!

They are being messed about

So basically, the PCB is not prepared to negotiate with the players regarding the above.

The Pakistani players as in other countries want a percentage of the revenue the Board is earning from media rights, social media revenue, sponsorship deals etc but the Board will not disclose to the players what they are earning.

The Board has said that the players will get paid their monthly retainers from their central contracts and nothing else.

The PCB will not recognise a players union or body to represent them and will not at the moment accept mediation.

What a mess!
 
PCB Zaka Ashraf is a PPP appointee. He is running the PCB like the Sindh government. Even Najam Sethi had a more professional handle on things vs this clown who is a PPP Jiyala.

There has been so many unprofessional episodes in the PCB in the last two months.
 
When players are NOT united, they start throwing matches to remove captain.

When players ARE united, they come together and demand unreasonable perks and privileges.

Not a big fan of Zaka Ashraf and the current PCB setup but the national team players need to realize that we are a one-sport country where the PCB doesn't even get a penny from the government.

So the PCB has to run the whole cricketing ecosystem in the country, this includes paying domestic cricketers, age-group cricketers, pensions to former cricketers, the various domestic and age-group coaches (there are like a thousand coaches on PCB payroll), paying to develop the cricketing infrastructure in the country and many more expenses.
All of this amounts to billion of ruppees.

National team players and their families are living a luxurious life, just check out our captain's brothers Instagram accounts. If the money they are getting offered is not satisfying their lust, then so be it. Many more players in the domestic set-up who can replace them.

How can you then blame players for opting to play LPL or CPL or BPL.
 
No issues whatsoever with Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen and Shadab throwing their toys out of the pram and not signing a central contract

The players want more which they are not entitled to contractually
 
The Big 3 Cricketing Boards pay a percentage of their earnings to the players. This has never happened before in Pakistan's Cricketing History, so i don't blame the players for demanding the same. However the Board needs to make it clear that this percentage of earnings will only be shared depending on the team's rankings and performances. The players can't be making these demands when they are losing to India by 228 runs in a big tournament and not winning the country ICC tournaments or doing well in them or winning home test series against the Big 4 or over seas win. Pakistan has not had any of these for a while therefore the PCB should include the clause in the central contracts that players will only get a percentage of the boards earnings subject to the teams performances.

Not being paid for 4 months would cause mass protest and walking out of the job. But the Pak players know, the PCB will never pick them again, their Int career would be pretty much over unless there is a change.

However if they ALL join together and go on strike, PCB will have no choice but to pay them.

Im assuming the PCB chairman and his merry men have been paid, and paid well in the last 4 months.

Who are these thousand coaches on the PCB payroll? Which quality player have they produced for Pakistan? The fact we are not producing quality players is because we have such poor incompetent coaching at the grass root and domestic level.
 
This is bad situation hopefully this resolve soon enough and don't affect our performance in upcoming wc

The Big 3 Cricket boards don't get any money from the government. Their source of income is broadcasting revenue, gate money, sponsorships, franchise fees. They sometimes apply to the banks for loans as well.

They have made careers, franchise contracts, sponsorship deals, advertisements due to Babar’s favours to them especially

They don’t deserve a single penny from what the PCB has made of them in their own capacity. The PCB simply has its dues to pay to them as they are centrally contracted. They allow them to play 2-4 extra leagues as well. They don’t take a penny from their personal sponsorships or advertisements

Babar got things to go the way he wanted. The PCB will keep what’s theirs.

T20 leagues also pay the PCB fees in exchange for their involvement.

The dispute centres around fair value. Irrespective of players making their own money, the PCB needs to be be more equitable and increase renumeration to reflect the market.

The ECB are introducing multi year contracts. Their players have stability and additional benefits like health, pensions and decent domestic contracts. The Pakistan cricket player has no safety net and often have to arrange their own medical care at their own expense.

Very few cricketers in Pakistan actually benefit from having job security. The PCB needs to start paying better, improve contracts and the safety net for players.

Heard it on The Pavillion show this year during the t20 world cup.

These domestic and age-group coaches have produced the same players that are now demanding a share in the total revenue.

And please, stop discarding everyone.

The PCB did increase the contract values. The players are yet to sign them. They want more

Australia and England are not one-sport countries. They don't have domestic and age-group cricketers in bulk.

Sadly, we have a lot of mouths to feed. And if we stop feeding them, then cricket can soon become hockey in Pakistan.

You get what you pay for. Start paying players market rate, you’ll see a cultural change and better competition for places.

The PCB can’t pay the players like the ECB, BCCI and CA can.

They actually pay these players perfectly well considering they play the reserve teams of most big 3+ NZ and SA.

The boys get paid fairly for the standard of cricket they are playing. Also, Pakistan doesn’t have its major payday from a India home series. When that comes through, their salaries will increase accordingly.

ECB+CA get that payday from BCCI, PCB doesn’t
 
In a country where the right to vote is not given why are people surprised by this behavior from the PCB.

I get that. They need to address job security, this annual contract business doesn’t help anyone.

Players are trying to maximise given the uncertainty.

If you compare to local standards yes, they are paid reasonably. As a professional sports star, you could probably earn more driving for UPS in the US and have guarantee of a permanent position.
 
For those of you following English cricket since the 70s/80s, England players had similar issues, and it wasn't until the late 90s (Under Hussain/Atherton) that the ECB started to pay attention.

Essentially England were at rock bottom in the late 90s, and ECB hired a team of psychologists etc to find out why, and within weeks of interviewing the players the problem was identified - job insecurity.

The players didn't know if they were playing their last match or not and this resulted in poor performances, so the ECB introduced performance based central contracts. This not only motivated players to perform, but rewarded them bonuses for success too - we can now see the difference this made.

Central contracts with performance related bonuses are the answers, not a share of the media revenue.
 
What a joke of a board and on top of this they sell the players and fans down the road in the Asia cup. Now we find out whatever money that was is not trickling down.
 
The best way and, to have the best policies as a board, is to copy the best. We need to copy what the BCCI have in place as a board and it’s relationship to its players.

Hearing that Pakistan players, even with a Grade 'A' Contract want no restriction on the Leagues in the year as well as a good chunk of revenue sharing. So that is a bone of contention for PCB.
This is causing the delay in salaries being paid as both parties(players Agents and PCB) are not ready to budge.

They are too busy crying about made up issues like visa and venue changing etc. Their focus is on distraction rather than any actual work that will bring any positive change to anyone’s life.

A shameless and incompetent board which is not even patriotic towards its own country and players.
 
If it is all about Performance. I wonder what happened to the Blank Check to team, which Ramiz as PCB Chaiman claimed, he has got if Pakistan beat India in T20 CWC 2021. Howmuch of it and what % was paid to the Players

Different times with no alternative

Here no matter what the performance related bonus would be, a cricketer can just go to a league for 3 weeks and earn much much more
 
I feel sorry for this shambolic treatment meted out to International sportspersons.
 
Last time I read news like this was for a team (WI) when players didn't have money to buy jerseys. They travelled to India and lifted the 2016 T20 WC trophy. 😉
 
How greedy are these players ? The World Cup is around the corner , can't you just focus on Cricket and give your best to win the tournament. If you win the Cup, they will be rewarded with lot of money and gifts just like happened after the 2017 CT Win. Concentrate on the bigger goal now, money issues can be sorted out later it's not as if these players are finding it difficult to pay their electricity bills.

Why are they greedy? Isn't it part of their professional contract? And do you only earn to pay your electricity bills? An international player should be treated with due dignity, period !

yeh, i hope you dont have to work for free for 4 months and than someone tell you to concentrate on work.

Inflation is at 35% in pakistan. Money issue is there. NO company has the right to stop paying salary. The players have a very valid point. Even a month delay in salary is ridiculous and here we are talking about 4 months.

These guys have families and have to look after them. Pay for things.

How do they expect them to perform in the world Cup when they haven't been paid for 4 months? It's as if the PCB is setting Pakistan up for failure and then they say Pakistanis believe in connspiracy theories.

Remember the time this site was filled with stories of a bust up during the Asia Cup between Babar and Shaheen? When at most, if anything did happen, it had been a team talk after the game.

You are talking as if these guys are daily wage workers or rehri walas whose families would go hungry If they don't work and earn on daily basis .

These Pampered Cricketers earn more in one year than most ordinary South Asians will make in their whole lifetime. Forget even a common man, compare them to other Sportsperson like Hockey players who are paid peanuts to represent the country, stay in low class accomodation, have no job security and also have to Work on part time basis because representing the country doesn't pay enough to run the house..

This is their golden opportunity to register their name in History Books , a feat that will be remembered for years to come just like 1992 WC. They will be rewarded with so much money , fame and adulation from their employers, fans , private businessmen . This is once in a lifetime event just a week away where the team needs to remain united for a Bigger Goal rather than getting into protests and dramas.
 
I hope once the World Cup is over and where Pakistan team will obviously flop , the board comes very hard on the players including the Ring Leader Babar Azam. You want to be paid a handsome share of the boards earning , well let's also analyse your performance. The whole losing team needs to be dismantled after the WC defeat, just like the Board did after the 2023 WC debacle. Start everything from the scratch.

i dont care about hockey or other sportperson.

Thing is, these guys are overdued on their salary and they need to be paid. When you move up in your life so does your cost. Someone like Iftikhar will send his children to good schools and to send your child to school you need to pay the fees. 4 months of salary not paid means Iftikhar could be overdued on his children school fee as school fee for the new year has to be paid in September in Pakistan.

Alot of these guys wanted to buy certain equipment related to sports, or have diets. Maintaining a good diet requires money. Sports equipment requires money. Whey protein poweder is crossing above 50k in pakistan if you want original.

You dont work without salary. The fact that these guys are working is still an ehsan.

World Cup or no WOrld Cup, doesnt matter. Their dues need to be paid. 4 months of no dues paid and still playing and this news just came out, that means the player havent made noise. They could had leaked things to media but they didnt. But 4 months is too much..

You cant defend such stupiddity, anyone defending such things has probably never dealt with real life problems than.

The salary they would had got 4 months ago and now has a massive change, as the value wont be the same due to hyper inflation.

Taxes have to be filed before september 30th. With no salary recieved how are the players suppose to file or pay the tax to govt?
 
PCB makes revenues and profits off these players and it’s not the other way around. To deprive players a share of their earnings just to pump more money into inflated admin salaries is deplorable.

Babar is being diplomatic here and probably doesn't want to embarrass PCB ahead of the World Cup.

Why don't you go work for free? Doesn't sound like a fun proposition, does it? Why should the players. They are holding up their part of their contracts and making money for PCB, they should be well compensated for it.

Keep in mind, less money in players pockets means more money in the pocket for old geezers in PCB who don't do a lick of work.

There were 31 points of contention with the main issues being the NOC's for T20 Leagues, share of earnings from sponsors, endorsements, ICC, Youtube earnings. Some points where the PCB were being fair and some points where the players were justified.

Even the Category A players who were being offered Rs 4.5 million a month complained whats the point if after deduction of taxes, health/medical insurance, provident fund deductions, we are being left with Rs 2.2 million a month, the players were demanding a higher wage to give them a net monthly pay cheque of Rs 4.5 million a month or for the PCB to apply for tax exemptions on their behalf.

PCB is in the right as far as T20 leagues is concerned, Pakistan's fast bowlers have to be wrapped up in Cotton Wool especially before premier tournaments or test series, however the PCB needs to ensure that the foreign boards don't retaliate by stopping their players from participating in the PSL.

Interesting that the PCB is unwilling to share its revenues with the players. Yet, when it comes to PSL, they give away the entire house.
 
PCB were under pressure to resolve this issue.

They tried to brush it under the carpet but word got out of what was going on.

But even in today's press release they have not disclosed details of the percentage of the ICC revenue the players will actually earn.

It is apparently 3% in Year 1, 4% in Year 2 and 5% in Year 3 which is b/w $1-2 million.

well if it is that or whatever else why not disclose it.

Why just leave the information out when there is nothing to hide.
 
5 months since our players have been paid(?) and the PCB thought it wouldn’t cause any issues going into a major tournament?
 
PCB not paid it purposely, as it is now easy for PCB to settle n bargain after their poor show in WC

Regardless of the performance, they’ve signed a contract…also some players aren’t picked in the PSL or other franchise leagues so their only source of income would be from PCB.

Even if we won all our games at the WC, they’d still be 5 months without pay.
