Pakistan envoy upset at refusal of student visas by UK

LONDON: Pakistan’s new high commissioner to the United Kingdom Sahebzada Ahmed Khan has said that he will take up the issue of Pakistani students who aspire to get education in the UK but face extreme difficulties to obtain visas from British high commission.

In an interview, the envoy said that he is aware that thousands of Pakistani students fail to get visas to UK each year despite fulfilling all requirements, but stressed that he will be raising the issue with the UK’s Home Office soon and will advocate the case of Pakistani applicants.

The number of Pakistani students trying to get UK visas for higher education has sharply dropped in the last few years and only a handful of students are able to come to UK varsities. Pakistani students are amongst the biggest victims of UK government’s new visa regulations which have focused on targeting international students.

“Our students face extreme difficulties in obtaining visas for UK. I will be interacting with the UK government to find out the problems to know what the reasons behind mass refusals are. This will be amongst my priorities,” the Pakistani high commissioner said.

Khan said that he will be visiting universities in UK to meet Pakistani students to get to know their problems.

“Nearly 1.5 million Britons are of Pakistani origin, they are the real asset of Pakistan in this country and I will try my best to increase interaction with them. We will be interacting with them not only through our consulates but also directly through the high commission. We will welcome Pakistanis to get in touch with us,” he said.

The high commissioner stressed that Pakistan is a modern, progressive and democratic country and this message will be pushed forward with full dedication. “It’s a fact that Pakistan is a pluralistic and progressive country envisioned by the Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.”

He said that many Pakistanis have complained about NADRA’s tracking system which is currently not working. “NADRA’s system is down because of a technical issue. We are trying our best to get this system up and running again. There are many people who cannot travel to Pakistan high commission or consulates, some are bedridden and some just don’t have time. With the NADRA system working, they can track the progress of their applications from home.”

Khan also expressed hope that the direct foreign investment in Pakistan will increase in near future.

“The investors’ confidence in Pakistan is increasing with improvement in the security situation. Currently, there are around 200 UK companies working in Pakistan; we would like to take this number to more than 500 UK companies in the next few years,” he said.

The high commissioner further stated that the law and order situation and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have played a big role in making Pakistan favoured future destination of investors.

He said that the country is heading in the right direction, adding, “There will be peace in the neighbourhood and prosperity will increase in the country in coming years. Everyone today knows that Pakistani is a business destination.

“I have been to the length and breadth of Pakistan in the last two years and law and order situation has improved tremendously,” Khan added.

Well can you really blame them here when so many students just come here using studying as an excuse but really they work illegally in restaraunts and chicken shops and send the money back home?

Theres a whole business been made out of it. There are a number of fake colleges who make fake documents for these students so they can get thier visas under false pretences. I remember watching a program (cant remember the name or the exact figures quoted) which showed a team carry out a sting operation. Fake students pay upto 5 thousand pounds to these fake colleges for documents and then these fake colleges continue to mark you as having been regularly attending in order to fool the authorities.

Theres hundreds of such colleges and the UK is trying hard to catch them out.

In saying that i do feel sorry for the genuine students who get caught in the crossfire but you cant exactly blame the UK for taking a more cautious approach. I think theres a ranking system now where only a certain calibre of university or college will be accepted but im not sure

Generalization how exactly? I never said every student or every college was fake did i?
A lot of fake colleges operate for years before getting busted. Its simply such s big business that the authorities are having trouble keeping up. There are easily over a hundred fake colleges still operating right now.

Pakistani's are the most fraudulent nationality by number when it comes to immigration (I use fraudulent in a general sense encompassing many aspects of the system).

I have pakistani roots so just wanted to point that out before i get called an indian or biased. Pakistanis are by far the main culprits in this. Every case i have read about or seen on tv or been made aware of by others is to do with pakistanis. But im sure there will be indians as well but nowhere near as many as pakistanis

About 10 years ago loads came to "study" but most of them were working in Pizza shops. I knew alot of them and when you hear their stories of families selling land to send them over, i felt really sorry for them. Many of those guys got married to girls with British passports and are still here.

It's scary to the proportion of Indian students in US colleges vs Pakistani students. Even the lower middle class Indians manage to get visas and loan to get degree from US college, why are Pakistani students not doing the same? I feel when these kids get educated in the west and go back they can make huge contributions to society and economy and India and China are prime examples.

Up here in Bradford the Lahori Asylum seeker/ Students mainly knock on doors begging for money for Pakistan/Kashmir or Mosques.

The ones that work undercut Roma Gypsies cleaning Mirpuri's toilets in there take aways/restaurants and other dirty jobs no one wants to do.

I wonder if Mehreen wants to make a program about her community and why they will sell there mum/religion to come to this Country.

Its not just in Bradford either Underclass areas like Newham or especially Southall where they live in Sikhs garages lol.

Well considering this thread is about Pakistani asylum seekers/ students and Bradford is called the City of sanctuary and most of the Asylum seekers here are from Lahore and surrounding areas.

Also in regards to Mehreen and Leicester I guess she hasn't been to Leicester especially where the Ghandi statue is lol makes Newham or Southall or Bury Park look posh.
