So under current format pakistan is scheduled to play 14 Tests in current WTC cycle to see if they could get to the final.

Pakistan have 3 away series
1-1 vs WI (Already played)
2 tests vs Bangladesh
3 tests vs Sri lanka

Then 3 home series which are pretty much unlikely to happen

2 tests vs Aus
2 test vs NZ
3 tests vs Eng

All 3 series to be played in pakistan. Unless each nations goverment says you cant tour pakistan then pretty much the ICC should award all series points to pakistan. if series is cancelled on goverments basis then series should not counted towards WTC.

So we could have a scenario where pakistans final chances are based on 3 away series. If pakistan could then win in bangladesh 2-0 and in SL 2-0 or even 3-0.

The points per games ratio would give them huge chance of getting to final.

Yes it does make a mockery of the whole WTC concept, but if western bloc want to cry off, then see be it.

Eng aus nz will not tour Pakistan. All points will go to Pakistan.They will beat Bng and srilanka easily.Enter WTC final with top rank, India somehow manage to reach final as second team. Than India vs Pakistan final .What more you expected?

Think the likelihood of an India-Pakistan final at Lords has increased tenfold with the events in the past one week.
 
The ICC will find a way to manipulate it so Pakistan have no chance of being in the final.
 
Knowing ICC they will force Pakistan to play at Neutral Venue and if Pakistan declines, they would dock WTC points for Pakistan and not the other way around.

Exactly. ICC is also Western bloc lol.

In any case it is not the impartial body we'd like to think it is and will only serve their own interests, most of which align with their most powerful members.

They're the ICC, they set the rules and could easily take the decision that Pakistan must play their home series in a neutral location or forfeit the series. There is literally no benefit for them to go against any of the big 3.
 
In the 1996 WC, teams refused to tour SL for the WC games due to security reasons. SL received the points for those games as forfeit. If England, Australia and NZ don't reschedule and play the series, those games should be forfeited as well. But yeah ICC may ask Pakistan to play in a neutral venue but again it is the hosts prerogative if they want to do that. They should not be penalised for not wanting to play their home games elsewhere.

I doubt the final will be at Lords. It will probably be a different country than England.

The big question though is would Pakistan play India if both make the WTC final or would Pakistan forfeit the final against India.
 
Pakistan should ask for either a forfeited series or cancelled series if western teams don't tour their country. If the ICC tries to force Pak to play in a neutral territory, Pak should use past examples where teams have forfeited series/games when they refused to play matches in Sri Lanka or Zimbabwe. If the ICC threatens to dock points, if I was the PCB head, I would rather make Pakistan stop playing the WTC in protest.

Eitherway, the chances of Pak making the final looks extremely high after the current developments. NZ also made the final last time as they cancelled their away tours in Bangladesh. So it's not Pakistan's fault if other teams don't tour their country and Pakistan benefits from that. That said, Pak should be wary as well. Having a lot of series cancelled would mean the series against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka would gain disproportionate significance when points are calculated by percentage. As we saw in the Caribbean, it's not a given that Pak would win both series and anything could happen, Bangladesh might prepare roads and get a drawn series, Lanka could spin out Pakistan on a rank turner.
 
If teams don't tour Pakistan, Pakistan should be awarded points. This is WTC.

During 2003 World Cup, both England and New Zealand lost points due to not playing Zimbabwe and Kenya.
 
The Pakistan Government should call back their team 10 mins before the coin toss of the WTC final vs India. We need to play them at their own game.

I think Cricbuzz said something that it didn't know was incorrect. Reliable sources say the location has not yet been decided. And it would be very surprising if the location was the same country twice in a row, ICC doesn't work like that.
 
Pakistan should reach the finals and then forfeit 30 mins before toss and teach ICC, BCCI and other boards a lesson.
 
The Guardian is generally reliable, but the author is not being definitive when he writes "the talk among ICC executives is that Lord’s will play host in two year’s time."

I would be surprised in BCCI agreed that the final should again be in one of the two nations where conditions are most unsuited for the Indian team (the other being NZ). Bring it to India and let's have Karun Nair score another unbeaten triple century against the hapless visitors :))

Pakistan have jumped above India in the ICC World Test Championship standings after the latter were penalised for slow over-rate in the Edgbaston Test.

Apart from the points penalty, India have also been fined 40 per cent of their match fee for the offence during their seven-wicket loss against England in the rescheduled fifth Test.

The points penalty means India drop below Pakistan to the fourth spot in the ICC World Test Championship standings. After the penalty, India are on 75 points (point percentage of 52.08), just a shade below Pakistan's PCT of 52.38 per cent.

The news comes as a further blow to India, who were defeated by seven wickets in Edgbaston after England chased down a record 378 – their highest-successful run chase in Test history. Jonny Bairstow led the way with a ton in each innings while Joe Root too smashed an unbeaten 142 in the fourth innings.

Pakistan dont deserve to be in the final two neither they will be.
 
Pakistan would need to make rank turners and get good spinners themselves to have any chance against England at home.

I remember when I said last year that all of Australia, NZ and England would beat Pakistan at home and posters here laughed at that. The fact remains that Pakistan is a very poor Test side led by an extremely timid captain. This is the same England that only won 1 Test out of 17 Tests and now have won 4 out of 4 simply by having a positive minded captain who has moulded the team to play in a certain manner.

Even though England have romped home in the English summer, they will be brutally exposed in sub-continent conditions (sans Pakistan) when the ball is going to turn 45 degrees from day 1. All this aggression will come crashing down like a house of cards. Pakistan must look to prepare rank turners otherwise they dont stand a chance against England on the placid tracks that Pakistan tends to produce at home. And please don't play Hasan Ali against England. That guy is going to go at 8 RPO in test matches against them.

England, NZ would be troubled by the spinners in Bangladesh on rank turners

The problem is that we are terrible at developing one spinner for all conditions the way SENA teams invest solely on one spinner and play him in every match regardless of the conditions. That one, battle hardened spinner will do more damage against us than our specialist spinner who is picked/dropped.

Pakistan missed the trick by not investing long term on Zafar Gohar 5/6 years ago. The boy is fit, good athlete, good fielder and a decent batsman. Your perfect number 9! By now, he would have learned to become a proper 2nd innings 5 wicket taker bowler on a regular basis.

Look at how Australia have just persisted with Lyon for so long and now PCB is scared to make rank turners against Australia knowing that Lyon is far too deadly for their batsmen who no longer have Younis Khan and Misbah to bail them out against high quality spin.

Ajaz Patel will absolutely murder our batsmen on a rank turner.

Jack Leach is slowly but surely becoming that dangerous wicket taker for England too who will dominate for them on rank turners.
 
They should stop having a test championship if Pakistan is to reach the WTC finals. With just 1 world class batsmen, 1 genuinely good fast bowler and a decent wicket keeper if you somehow manage to reach finals of a championship, clearly the system is flawed.
Yes I don’t need to be told that India lost yesterday but please remind me when was Pakistan team even competent enough to challenge a test team playing in foreign conditions.

Pakistan has drawn against England in the last 2 of 3 tests.in England.

They likely need to win 4 out of their next 5 matches vs England/NZ.

Hopefully result oriented pitches are rolled out.
 
NZ have declined in the last year or so and I believe they can be beaten although they have had a pretty good record against Pakistan in Asia since 1996 atleast.

England is a different proposition. They have flopped against Pakistan in Asian conditions for years but they look a rejuvenated side under Baz. Will be an interesting series for sure.

At their best, Pakistan are at the very least a top-three WTC team, though a couple of slips may prevent Babar Azam’s side from a historic final appearance.

A one-wicket defeat to the West Indies in their opening series may come back to bite the side, who were unable to hold out a strong Australia, in what was the first series between the sides in Pakistan since 1998.

It’s not too late though, with their remaining five Test matches all at home against sides from outside the region. Five victories would take them to 69.05%, a percentage close to guaranteeing a final spot given high-flyers Australia and South Africa take on each other.

Abdullah Shafique (736 runs at 66.90) has become a key cog in the batting group, accompanying Babar (953 at 63.53) who has led his chargers with aplomb.

Test cricket is a great equalizer.

Pakistan do not deserve to play the WTC final.

Aus/SA/Ind or even SL are more worthy of the final spots.
 
A loss against England in Rawalpindi late on day five has dented Pakistan's hopes of making the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 final.

Pakistan were placed mid-table (No.5) in the ICC World Test Championship standings, but had a realistic chance of making the final because of the five home Tests against England and New Zealand.

However, a nervy batting performance late on the final day meant they conceded the Test from a position of strength earlier on.

While England are hardly in contention to reach the final of the WTC, the loss is a significant blow to Pakistan.

Wins for Australia and India in their respective series' would see Pakistan miss out.

Pakistan's loss also puts India in control to reach the WTC final given that they can now secure their place even if they lose one of the Tests against Australia at home, provided they sweep Bangladesh.

If Australia win the remaining Test against West Indies and at least two Tests against South Africa, they would still be well placed to make the final.

Seems like I was correct all along. Just wrong on one aspect - Hasan Ali going at 8 RPO. He would probably go at 12 RPO.
 
Pakistan have sqandared their best ever chnace of reaching the WTC finals. They had to play ENG, AUS and NZ at home and WI n SL away. Not sure when they will get such a cycle again. All they had to do was curate spin pitches and pick batsmen who can play spin well.
 
Pakistan is out of the contention of playing WTC Final.

Australia - 75%.
South Africa - 60%.
Sri Lanka - 53.33%.
India - 52.08%.
England - 44.44%.
Pakistan - 42.42%.

- Pakistan slips below England and are out of the WTC.

On paper pakistan had all its test series in cycle in Asia, part from away to WI. Yet in conditions they should have been happy playing in the have made a huge mess, pathetic stuff and heads need to roll.
 
Pakistan however can still make the World Test Championship final but a lot of their chances depend on other factors with top-placed Australia being their best bet. Pakistan will have to register a clean sweep against New Zealand at home, with series happening later this month, which will take their win-percentage to as high as 47.62 per cent. That would be enough to place Pakistan in the second spot only if the following factors fall in place...

1) Pakistan will be mostly relying on Australia to pave their road to the final. They need the Pat Cummins-led side to continue their dominance over South Africa and then against India as well in the Test series next month in the sub-continent.

2) Pakistan also need Bangladesh to stun India in the Mirpur Test which begins from December 22 onwards.

3) They will need New Zealand to blank Sri Lanka in the Test series in March 2023.

4) Pakistan would finally need West Indies to whitewash South Africa or script victory in one of the two Tests and draw the other.

If it was a T20 this actually could had happened , if it happens in Tests this will be a miracle and massively disappointing for India and Kiwis.
 
Pakistan surely have messed this up. They could have qualified with some better performances. The drawn series against WI started the free fall which has ended with a 0-3 loss against England. I don't think they will get a better draw than this again.
