The result of Test in Hamilton, which gave South Africa a 1-0 series win, earned Faf du Plessis’s side two ranking points and helped the Proteas move one point ahead of Australia in second place.

South Africa has finished second on the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings at the 1 April cut-off date after the Hamilton Test ended in a draw on Wednesday.

The result, which gave South Africa a 1-0 series win, earned Faf du Plessis’s side two ranking points and helped the Proteas move one point ahead of Australia in second place. In contrast, New Zealand dropped two rankings points and consequently slipped behind Pakistan into sixth place.

As New Zealand versus South Africa series was the last series to finish before the 1 April annual cut-off, South Africa’s number-two ranking has won it an award of $500K, while Australia has collected $200K. England, which ended up fourth, received $100K.

On Tuesday, India had retained the mace and pocketed $1 million following its 2-1 series win over Australia. It was India’s fifth successive series win in the 12-month period from 1 April 2016, following successes against the West Indies (2-0), New Zealand (3-0), England (4-0) and Bangladesh (1-0).

South Africa, in the same 12-month period, defeated New Zealand (1-0, both home and away), Australia (2-1) and Sri Lanka (3-0), while Australia lost to Sri Lanka (3-0), South Africa (2-1) and India (2-1) with its only series win being against Pakistan (3-0). Fourth-ranked England beat Sri Lanka (2-0), drew with Pakistan (2-2) and Bangladesh (1-1), and lost to India (4-0).

Following last year’s cut-off, Australia had started in number-one position on 112 points, followed by India (110), South Africa (109), Pakistan (106), England (102), New Zealand (96), Sri Lanka (89), West Indies (76), Bangladesh (47) and Zimbabwe (five).

The annual update of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings will next be carried out on 1 May with the series results from 2013-14 not to be included in the calculations and outcomes from the 2014-15 and 2015-16 series weighted at 50 per cent.

How many points do we get if we win all the Tests against the windies?

A 3-0 win for Pakistan, means we go from 97 to 99 points
A 2-0 win for Pakistan, means we go from 97 to 98 points
A 1-0 win for Pakistan, means we remain on 97 points.

No changes in our ranking.

Pakistan will surely be in the top 3 rankings, after winning the next 3 series against WI, Bng and SL

There is nothing "surely" about this. #3 means they have to overtake both Aus and SA. That isn't going to happen. They will have a hard time overtaking England as such.

England will play SA:D and SA can beat them

I know you don,t like or rate pakistan team at all but next three pakistan test series are against west indies

srilanka and bangladesh so their is every chance pakistan can jump to 3 in test

Boss u have to understand one thing. If u r playing against sides lower than u in rankings u will lose points even for draws and lose big if u lose a test. So it is a lose lose situation unless u whitewash them

Even if u whitewash them u will get max of 3 points in 3 test series. I hope u understand this. U will only gain good points if u beat a team higher than amd not below

If u win 4 and draw 2 then u r ranking will not change. India inspite of winning 2 tests in wi lost ranking points due to rain draws

England have tough test schedule ahead and i expect them to give us some favor and lose some points

yup but you are right i miss that if we lose one test against w.i we will lose 4 points  :(
Thats why it is better to play against good sides because u will not lose much if u lose and if u win against top team u gain bumper points

Amazing when you consider that with his inadvertently comedic bowling plans and fields in Australia Misbah secured his reputation as the most tactically incompetent captain ever to tour Australia.

Exhibit A: Yasir Shah opening the bowling in the Sydney Test.

and for unknown reasons i havent seen u croticsing hafeez selection for odi....will like ur comments regarding hi selection despite failures in LOI>>

Congratulations to India but I think more points should be allocated to teams winning away especially against the top 4 teams. India has nothing to show in the away series wins apart from the win against the WI. I would just ask SA with away wins against SA and NZ deserve to be no 2 atleast

mostly responding to others' posts, but apologies for the harshness.

Back to the topic, as SL, WI and Bang are low ranked beating them doesn't get you a whole lot of points.

England will humble SA this summer. We aren't getting thay #4 spot anytime soon, unfortunately.

No sir. Even if u draw one test u will not gain even one point and u most probably lose 1 point for a draw inspite of winning 2

The test rankings are driven more by series results instead of game by game results. A 2-0 test series wins almost gives the same number of points as 3-0 win.

Sir thats what i am saying. Even if u win the series 2-0 but drawn a single test u will not gain any points, u will lose points because u r not supposed to draw or lose to a side lower in rankings

And that's my point, a 2-0 series win in a 3 test series or a 1-0 series win in a 2 test series will give us points. You can use ICC ranking predictor to get an idea. If we we were number 1 or 2 and win a series 1-0 or 2-1 then we might lose points, but at number 5, any series win against any team will give us points.

To be honest we are defo going to win the WI Tests but the only thing that remains is by what margin?

The May reset may actually make us loose points as some of our good wins will lose significances.
