What's new

Pakistan needs its Test mojo back, Misbah-ul-Haq has to become our coach again!

There's no cure for the delusion you find from Misbah fans.

If he was Captain or Coach, Pakistan would be playing Azhar Ali in this test match. It would've been even worse.

Misbah's cheerleaders are always quick to remind us of their hero's record in UAE but fail to mention he did it courtesy of the chucking services of Saeed Ajmal, prime Yasir Shah and an All-Time Great (ATG) player of spin in Younis Khan.

I don't rate Sarfraz and Babar Azam as captains but what I would say is, the outcomes in those series played in the UAE would've been no different if they had the same calibre of players at their disposal.

Not only have Pakistan become a weak defensive side but they've also become a bunch of timid kittens (who nobody fears) as a result of Misbah's leadership. This school of thought of his has influenced the way Babar captains the team and how the current crop of team plays.

When I'm reading stuff like "Misbah knows red ball cricket..." etc, it makes me wonder whether some of you have amnesia. It wasn't long ago when he was our coach and we were all here desperately hoping for him to get sacked.

It appears some of us have already forgotten the embarrassment we endured in Australia when he was captaining the side in 2016 and also when he was coaching the side in 2019. During the former, Ian Chappell and the rest of the comm. box couldn't hide their disgust for Misbah's tactics. It was clear for everyone to see that he was the worst ever captain for tests played in Australia. The selections for the 2019 series were nothing short of atrocious. He was Head Coach and Chief Selector so no one was more worthy of blame than he was.

Pakistani coaches are still stuck in the 90s which is why the PCB needs to hire a competent overseas coach who is somewhat in touch with the modern game. If this means we have to bend over backwards to bring back Mickey Arthur then so be it, as he's levels above any Pakistani coach especially Misbah who is not a qualified coach and nor does he have sufficient experience to fulfil the role.

Guys like Hawkeye and Major have always supported Misbah more than the Pakistan team so it's hard to take such a thread seriously.

I wish I’d read this before my last post. Would have saved me typing. This is pretty much exactly what I wanted to to say. Only this is a lot more eloquent. POTW for me

Will Misbah be Pakistan's First Director of Cricket?

Sorry but Misbah is a legend. Only a lack of talent at his disposal stopped him from dominating away from home too.

All Pakistanis owe Misbah immensely for restoring pride and dignity after the 2010 spot fixing shame.

What he has done for us can never be repaid.

With the greatest of respect, I wouldn't use these words in the same sentence as Misbah.

Misbah's history of failings as a player and captain from 2007 till 2016 far exceed his short list of successes. For this reason I can't call him a legend.

Whilst I agree that he led the side with dignity following the spot fixing scandal however when he decided to oust Mickey Arthur (when he was a PCB committee member) to pinch the role for himself, he became an undignified individual. I knew he was a selfish man after the Mohali innings but even I didn't expect him to stoop this low.

Will Misbah be Pakistan's First Director of Cricket?

Why Misbah? Why not Shoaib Akhtar or Shahid Afridi? They are not incompetent cricket brains! Even Shoaib Malik and Hafeez have a better white ball vision than Misbah does

This times a million. POTW for me. This entire defensive, timid and cowardly mindset came from him. His coaching stint was a horror show alone.

I really don't even bother watching highlights of our series win vs Eng in UAE as for me any series with Ajmal and Hafeez has a * next to it. And the moment Ajmal stopped chucking his effectiveness went down the drain.

Right now our team generally is total garbage, led by a comedy chairman and a spineless clueless timid captain. We either someone competent or get used to this. Arthur, whatever he was, put Misbah's coaching ability to shame.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind words. I'm glad to see you guys clearly don't have a case of amnesia when it comes to Misbah.

What I said was just a brief summary of how Misbah has destroyed Pakistan cricket. I could go on and on. For e.g. I didn't even mention the contrast fortunes between Sarfraz and Misbah from 2013 Champions Trophy to the next edition in 2017 even though both events were held in England.

Another notable example of Misbah's low IQ, was his laughable take on Shaheen during the 2019 World Cup. Eventually he was made to eat his words. Imagine if he was Pakistan's Captain/Coach/Selector for this tournament? God forbid he may've dropped Shaheen for Junaid Khan.

Misbah's failings as player, captain, coach and selector simply makes it criminal for anyone to buy into the proposition mentioned by the OP.

Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar are uneducated, Misbah is educated but this tenure as captain and coach was the darkest era in Pakistan cricket history, Professor can do a good job, he is smart and educated.

Misbah’s success in UAE and a couple of series in Pakistan were down to the players and their skill level.

He had younis arguably the best player of spin in the world since the turn of the century. At the very least an ATG player of spin. Ajmal legal action or not was lethal. Yasir had a purple patch. Even sarfraz had a purple patch.

His only notable home victory as coach was against SA and that was down to reverse swing. Quite obviously nothing to do with Misbah himself as he has shown no inclination to base a strategy around fast bowling.

On the other hand he was abysmal in Sena as both captain and coach. So even if you want to bring him in to win home series (which is certainly not a guarantee) and sacrifice away series, how is that helping Pakistan cricket?

This the the problem the team will still be inconsistent and he will groom the next Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiqs to lead the batting line up this decade.

His supporters conveniently forget his defensive minded nature whitewashings in SENA big failures of the ODI team again down to picking defensive batsmen in the top order and point to his record in UAE.

Well Babar would also win matches with Ajmal Rehman and Yasir unfortunately due to a lack of trust in his current spin options Babar has tried to bore the teams into defeat with flat wickets being prepared and ultimately made himself look silly.

Misbah's successes in Tests as captain.

Series win in NZ , series win over SL in UAE 2011, 2 series wins over England in UAE, drawn series in England, series win in SL 2015, series win over Australia 2014 UAE and the Caribbean win in 2017.

He had 8 memorable series as captain.

Now for the questionable results

1. Drawn series vs SA in 2010
2. Drawn series in WI 2011
3. Loss to SL in 2012
4. Whitewash in SA
5. Drawn series in Zimbabwe
6. Drawn series vs SA in 2013
7. Drawn series vs SL in 2013
8 . Series whitewash in SL 2014
9. Drawn series vs NZ in UAE 2014
10. Test loss to Windies in UAE( that was Windies 2nd away test win in 16 years)

11. Whitewash in NZ 2016
12. Whitewash in Australia 2016-17

He is not educated, if he was educated he would go after his business degree. Why isn’t he going. Why quit and run after cricket coaching again lol ? “Educated”

Shahid and Shoaib are successful businessmen even if they are apparently uneducated. They have advisors who help them make smart decisions. No one cares if they have a business management degree or not like Misbah does

What you need is their sense of direction in white ball cricket and a change of mindset in Tests

Pace bowlers do have an impact in Pakistan. Not all the time but in small phases. Cummins and Starc seized on such opportunities and put PAK under the pump last season.

This time, English seamers - Wood, Ollie and Jimmy all have sub 20 averages in this series. Whereas for Pakistan

Naseem- 41
Ali - 65
Rauf - 70 +

are the averages.

You are getting outgunned in the pace department by touring sides .

Misbah or any other coach for that matter can't solve that.

Good analysis
Cricket is coming back to Pakistan after long time , so lot of new people arent much familiar with traditional style of cricket in Pakistan , in Pakistan you either have draws or fast bowlers force you results, its was always like this , maybe because of larger digital media now , things get much more scrutinized , so they are appearing novel when it comes to pitches.
We simply dont have talent in test fast bowling at present.
Also Pakistan doesnt believe much in home advantage like other teams , not saying its right or wrong.

That would be the final nail in the coffin of Pakistan cricket .

If he is not involved in the day to day operations of the LOI side he can be very useful.

He has a decent cricketing brain, knowledge of the FC system and is a proven winner internationally.

Even in domestic he has dominated with Faisalabad and Islamabad in the PSL.

Sure he has some big flaws but he certainly also deserves respect

The Misbah test era is imo one of the finest in our history.

You can berate Misbah as much as you want but this logic of belittling his achievements because he had Ajmal and Younis in his team is frankly insulting and below the belt.

By that logic, should we now discard all the achievements of Steve Waugh as captain because he had ATG players from 1-11 in his team?

Should we disregard all the achievements of Clive Lloyd as captain when he had an ATG bowling attack?

In the same vein, why couldn't the captains of Pakistan win anything of note in the 90s when Pakistan had a world class team? They lost to SL at home twice, to Zimbabwe, Australia, England, SA.

You want to criticize Misbah - sure go ahead but do it with logic. Not random statements like he won only because he had Ajmal and Younis.

Nobody disowns our people more than our own people. It's ridiculous. Can't even acknowledge someone's achievements.

From being one of the top Test teams, to now becoming minnows in Tests -- consecutive series losses at home!

This Test team was used to absolutely dominating much better England, Australia and other sides in our "Home" series in the last decade.

Misbah made us a Test team that was impossible to beat at home. We were literally undefeated.

Now, we are clueless, and are losing every series at home. Let alone away - which we never used to win against any competitive country.

Misbah knows the art of Test cricket.

He's the one who can change our fortunes again, at least in Test cricket.

This time, not as a player or captain.
But, definitely as a coach.

Rameez has to take a decision, before it gets too late.

Say what you will about Misbah, but atleast he knew what it takes to win at home. Not only did he understand what pitches we needed, his selection also tended to usually be on-point. In general, his understanding of the game is light years ahead of Mr. qudrat ka nizam.

I'm sure most of the people on this thread will probably scoff at your post and to be quite honest they are simply not worth wasting your breath over.

The unfortunate thing is that with a bonehead like Ramiz at the helm, expecting logic or common sense to prevail is a futile expectation. I mean just look at some of the idiotic, and contradictory statements he has made in the past week. From things like: "it will take us years to make a good pitch"...only for one to be produced in the very next test, to "we should select T20 players for test"...'just because England is doing so.'

It’s not belittling his achievement he won series in UAE initially and deserves credit however where people go missing in the debate is when asked about the team post Younis and Ajmal which was built by Misbah and became close to minnow level.

If somebody can explain his reasoning behind Azhar and Shafiq being Pakistan’s best test batsmen according to Misbah I don’t think they even averaged 40 post Younis.

Other picks like Imran Butt as opener Shoaib Malik Iftikhar Ahmed as middle order batsmen and Imran Khan Musa as fast bowlers to win tests in Australia.

No doubt the Misbah supporters will go missing again as the team he inherited was different to the team he built which ultimately took Pakistan close to minnow level in tests.

That’s what Misbah will do again and if people want that long term then he should be reappointed or somebody else needs to be in charge who can play a more attacking brand of cricket and pick 2 spinners in Asia which is simple and also plan to win series outside Asia.

So is it Misbah's responsibility to ensure Azhar and Asad bat prolifically once Younis and Misbah departed the scene? Should I hold Imran Khan accountable for the fact that the team he left after 1992 became so bad that they got beaten by all and sundry in Tests apart from England? When the team became a complete Test minnow after Misbah departed, why don't people ask questions from Sarfraz and Mickey?

Why are Sarfraz and Mickey Arthur immune from all criticism? These two decided to play 3 fast bowlers in the UAE in the very first series after Misbah retired and got duly whitewashed by Sri Lanka. Should I be blaming Misbah for this or the two nincompoops in Sarfraz and Mickey?

We belittle it because Misbahs success was built on a chucker in Ajmal and Younis who carried our middle order. Once both left the reality of Misbahs team was infront of everyone culminating in the amazing team he took to Australia

Useless argument. If one is going to blame the captain for all losses, one should be ready to give credit for all of the wins as well. It cannot be an ala carte. Sorry. No captain in the world can win with useless players. Of course you need match winners so that a captain can win. I would love to see Ben Stokes win literally one match with the Bangladeshi team.

For all those who are now used to losing at home again.

Read the following post:

You can call anyone good or bad by providing selective examples. Misbah lost tests here & there but before him, Pak was losing at home and after his departure, things have been worse except for a short period when he coached the side.

Between 1995 to 2010: Pak lost 10 series at home

After Misbah's captaincy tenure: Pakistan lost 2 series within 2 years

After Misbah's coaching tenure: Pakistan has lost 2 series in a year

So, Pakistan with Misbah as coach & captain: Lost 0 series. They won 17 matches & lost 4. The W/L ratio is 4.25

Pakistan without Misbah as coach & captain (since 1995): Lost 14 series. They won 26 matches & lost 25. The W/L ratio is 1.04.

Stats suggest that Misbah was 4 times better than the rest.

Guess what?

Misbah has to be brought back as our coach. Current lot is clueless. People before Misbah's tenure were also as clueless as they come!

He's 4 times better than others we've had in Test management.

If we consider the home record for all teams post 1995, then Pakistan's W/L ratio of 4.25 under Misbah is only behind Australia (5.28) and marginally better than India's (4.23).

While, Pakistan's home W/L ratio without Misbah (1.00) is only better than WI, BD, Zim, Ire, Afg.

Pakistan were 2nd best side at home under Misbah while in other managements, they have been 7th.

Some are discrediting him by bringing reasons like he had superior players. But they are ignoring the fact that he managed them well. Under Misbah, there was no groupism in the Pakistan team.
