ISLAMABAD: Pakistan quietly helped Iraq in its fight against the militant Islamic State (IS) group, which reached a major milestone this week with the liberation of Mosul from the terrorist group’s control after three years of occupation.

Pakistan was among a number of countries that supported Iraq in fighting the IS, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh, said Ambassador of Iraq Ali Yasin Muhammad Karim at a press conference at the embassy. The presser was held to brief Pakistani media about the eviction of the IS from Mosul.

Pakistan’s contribution to the fight against the IS in Iraq has never been mentioned earlier either by Pakistani officials or Iraqis.

Ancient Assyrian town Mosul, which is Iraq’s second largest city and was used by the IS during years of occupation as the seat of its proclaimed caliphate, was freed after a gruelling nine-month-long military campaign by Iraqi security forces that was backed by several countries.

Talking about Pakistan’s help, the ambassador said Iraq, besides getting intelligence on terrorists, also received arms and ammunition and military medical assistance from the country. He recalled some of the Iraqi pilots, who took part in action against the IS, had been trained in Pakistan.

The ambassador said the continuing intelligence cooperation between Iraq and Pakistan could help the latter deal with the expanding footprint of the IS in the region.

Underscoring the IS threat, he said, the outfit was the most dangerous terrorist group and likened its threat to “time bombs” and “booby traps”.

“We share the same enemy,” Mr Karim said.

While responding to a question, the envoy played down involvement of Pakistanis with IS activities in Iraq, saying that “the bad guys” represented a very small proportion of the population of Pakistan. People of over 100 nationalities, he added, were part of IS ranks.

The people of Pakistan were generally very supportive of Iraq in its war against the IS, he remarked.

He praised Pakistan’s policy of neutrality towards the Middle East.

After Mosul, Ambassador Karim said, Iraq was about to make a final push against the IS from its territory.

Mosul’s liberation has, however, come at a huge cost.

The city after remaining under the IS occupation for three years during the fight for its liberation is in complete ruins and almost a million of its population has been displaced. The same is the case with other areas that Iraq has succeeded in liberating from the IS. Reports from Mosul warn of an emerging humanitarian crisis.

The Iraqi ambassador called for support for reconstruction and restoration of services in the cities devastated by the war.

“We need help for rebuilding infrastructure, which is the next important task,” he said.

Well done!

Don't know why Pakistan even bothered when its hands full fighting a similar foe in the Taliban within its own borders.

Yemen/Iraq/Syria are extracurricular adventures that Pakistan could do well to stay away from.

Good stuff. It was the right thing to do. Nice to be on the right side of history, whilst other countries are busy ruining their proud history of anti apartheid activity by aligning themselves with occupying regimes

Very proud of Pakistan! When will this country finally be given its due credit?! There has been so many occasions where the endowed armed forces of Pakistan has covertly assisted in wars, incidents around the world; without it ever 'coming to the fore' and being known amongst the masses. Thanks Iraq!

TTP is vanquished and is no more in Pakistan, its remnants are either across the border or gone. Hence no major bomb attacks. Disgusting attacks like Parinchar are now far and few thankfully, we used to have thousands of attacks every year with thousands of fatalities, its barely any attacks now and little causalities. Wazirstan is completely cleaned up now.

As far as I know we have been trying to sell and export our tanks, guns, personnel carriers and we have done so to Iraq so there was probably a sweetner deal in the picture for this ''assistance''.

Daesh is now sitting in Tora Bora once known as the capital of Al-Qaida so working against IS everywhere is in Pakistan's interest. Parachinar is a Shia majority city on Pak-Afghan border and on Afghan side of the border area there is Tora Bora a few miles away from Parachinar...

Excellent deed, well done. But was it essential for Pak not to disclose it? Not undermining anyone, the question just sprang into my mind.

We can do without IS making inroads in Pakistan I think. Also maybe not to **** off our Arab overlords.

Why would any Arab nation be ****** at any nation trying to wipe out that filth?

Which Arab nation is fighting IS at the moment?

They only survived this long because of them as they have been used extensively against non-Sunnis, by them I mean Saudis, Qataris, UAE the lot. Even now the filth such as Al-Nusra, openly and proudly, backed by the Saudis crush anyone like the IS did.

Nobody will want to join a group losing one battle after another.

The containment and destruction of Daesh is a boon for every Muslim majority country and will help ward off any internal growth of Daesh support.

funny no one knew, and yet people doubt those who talk about us helping the taliban

The Saudi army is barely getting by fighting the glorified biker gang in Yemen, ISIS might be a tad too high intense for them don't ya' reckon?

IS would never have risen up had it not been for the Saudis. A country which despises Shias had a Godsend in IS, an organisation who's entire aim was to cleanse the Shias and anynone who wasn't Sunni.

This Saudi ''coalition'' bombing Yemenis, Shia Yemenis, but refusing to bomb an animal in IS..a group which has made millions of their fellow Arabs homeless across the world, should tell you that much in who's backing who.

Pakistan Army/ISI helped many countries around the world that people dnt even know about them, only few , like Srilanka, Iraq etc.

I don't agree with Pak sending it's soldiers to fight Arab wars. Stay home and protect Pakistan.
