Usman is simply not an international level wicketkeeper. His technique is club standard at best, and it was obvious from the very first over with the fumble and the awkward take down the leg side. These are exactly the types of mistakes that cost you in big tournaments and pressure situations. If he’s going to play, his batting needs to be exceptional just to compensate for this level of keeping and it isn’t.

I’ve been highlighting these issues for a long time. This isn’t hindsight, I had been warning about this well before that botched run out against India, which could have changed the match in our favour. We keep repeating the same cycle with every below par keeper we try, and now we’re doing it again with Usman.

What makes this worse is watching Rizwan get dropped for players who don’t come close to his wicketkeeping standards. Let’s not pretend this is about “modern cricket.” It’s clear the people running the PCB have something personal against him, because on merit there is no debate. Meanwhile, Hesson and Aaqib talk about modern cricket, but all we’ve actually produced is more dot balls and less security behind the stumps.

Pakistan must pick Rizwan, even if that means using him lower in the order if he doesn’t fit into Hesson’s top order plans. Anyone who claims they care about Pakistan winning should understand what actually helps the team. The reality is simple: there is no better keeper batsman in the country than Mohammad Rizwan, and the decision makers need to swallow their pride and accept that.
