LAHORE: The Pakistan cricket team will attend a week-long training camp from the third week of May in Birmingham to prepare for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy.

The tournament, which sees the world’s top eight ODI sides clash against each other, begins in the UK from June 1 and there is more at stake for the Men in Green than just the prestigious tournament itself.

The tournament provides Pakistan with a great chance to further cement their position in the top eight ODI sides as they look to avoid the ignominy of having to go through the qualification round in order to play in the 2019 World Cup; also taking place in the UK.

Pakistan need to be in the top eight come September if they are to ensure automatic qualification. Knowing this, the management has decided to hold a training camp beginning from May 18 to help the player acclimatise to conditions in the UK.

The camp also provides the team management with the opportunity to assess the fitness level of the players taking part in the Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has instructed seven team members — Mohammad hafeez, Umar Akmal, Imad Waseem, Shoaib Malik, Junaid Khan, Fakhar Zaman and Fahim Ashraf — to report to the National Cricket Academy on May 15, from where they will be flying to Birmingham. The other eight team members — skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, Ahmad Shahzad, Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan and Wahab Riaz — will join the camp from the West Indies where they are currently part of the Test side that is playing the Calypsos.

Chief selector Inzamamul Haq has confirmed there is no change in the 15-member team and, barring injury or some unforeseen circumstances, the players that were announced will be featuring in the ICC mega event.

“The 10-day camp in Birmingham will be an opportunity for the team to regroup after a break,” said former captain Inzamam, while talking to The Express Tribune. “The boys will get the opportunity to adjust to the weather as well. Playing in English conditions has always proven tough for us, but I am optimistic that we will be able to do well there. I am planning to visit the side during the camp as well since I would be unable to go for the event due to Ramazan.”

No amount of preparation is going to save our sorry backsides lol.

Should prepare away from home,Birmingham is literally second home to them.

shaz619 and I will whip them into shape. :salute

Can anyone answer this question..... how can we do well with shehzad and azhar opening ?

Need a mindset change of seeing off the new ball... not sure how that can change in a weeks time with limited skill set...

Well, good step but we'll be lucky to win one or two matches. And thats including the practice games.

We should hope that better sense prevails and one of them opens with Fakhar. Despite being a complete hack atleast Fakhar won't waste balls with useless tuk tuk the kind of which is synonymous with Azhar and Shehzad.

Good planning by Pakistan, something we don't normally see. :14: Hopefully Fakhar can show Mickey he is good enough to open

Good but as long as Mickey is there things aren't going to improve. Since he has been hired as a coach, I've seen no improvement and he keeps on pushing his favorites for team selection. Sarfraz should lead from the front and put Mickey in his place. he should not be allowed to override the captain Safraz.

Waste of time and money. Instead just go out holiday, eat out and do shopping. With this I highly doubt we can win a single match included 2 warmup matches. Long live Inzi and Micky

Doubt it will make any difference. Azhar, Wahab, and Hafeez are just poor selections.

Junaid, Fakhar, Ashraf, Shehzad, and Junior Akmal also have a lot to prove and even there selections have question marks.

Just hoping for the best.

This is a good decision.

I genuinely think that the army training camp, and arriving in England a few weeks early, is the reason that we managed to do well in the Test series VS England last year.

shaz619 - do you think you will be able to ensure the boys are ready or would you like me to travel down south for a couple of days to help out? :inzi

Not only that, TEST side was far more settled and doing well in TEST format unlike ODIs...

ODI team not very much settled + poor selections in the form of Azhar, Shehzad , Hafeez and Wahab not expecting a big difference that the training camp would make...
