The first T20I between Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, serves as a high-stakes dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup coming up in February. Both teams are looking to finalize their combinations in the spinning conditions of Dambulla.

Team Previews

Pakistan: Testing Depth Without the "Big Three"

Pakistan is fielding a experimental squad led by Salman Ali Agha. Notably, the "Big Three"—Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi—are missing this series (due to BBL commitments and workload management).

* Key Return: Shadab Khan returns to the side after a long injury layoff. His performance as an all-rounder will be the focal point of the series.

* New Faces: Keep an eye on Khawaja Nafay, an aggressive middle-order batter handed his maiden call-up, and mystery spinner Usman Tariq.

* Bowling: In the absence of Shaheen and Haris Rauf, the pace attack will be spearheaded by Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr.

Sri Lanka: The Home Advantage

Sri Lanka enters the series with a distinct edge, having won five of their last six T20I encounters against Pakistan (though Pakistan leads the overall head-to-head 14-10).

* Spin Dominance: In Dambulla, the surface is expected to be balanced but will offer significant grip for spinners like Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.

* Stability: Unlike Pakistan, Sri Lanka is expected to field a more settled unit to build momentum for their home World Cup.

Squads:

Pakistan
Squad: Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Abdul Samad, Khawaja Nafay, Usman Khan(w), Salman Agha(c), Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Salman Mirza, Usman Tariq, Sahibzada Farhan, Abrar Ahmed

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis(w), Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Kamindu Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Traveen Mathew, Eshan Malinga, Janith Liyanage, Dushmantha Chameera

Really want to see how Nafay performs if he gets a chance...

Shadab is a minnow spinner who took the place of a deserving spinner.

Salman Ali Agha on the series and World Cup preparation:

"We are playing all formats here in Sri Lanka as part of our World Cup preparations. This series is primarily about getting ready for the World Cup."

"It will definitely help us better understand the conditions. We have toured here many times before, so we are familiar with the conditions, but playing matches is always different from practice."

On the squad and giving opportunities:

"The players we have brought are very talented. While some big stars are missing, we wanted to give these players a chance. Some of them are the future of Pakistan cricket, and we hope they perform well."

"Khawaja Nafay is a very exciting talent. He is an excellent batsman and can also keep wickets, which makes him even more valuable. I am very excited about his potential, and hopefully, we can give him opportunities to play."

"We believe he can continue his good form, as he has shown in domestic and international cricket. Overall, I think we have come here as a strong team, and I hope everyone contributes so we can win the series."

On players from ILT20 and responsibility of selection:

"The players who have come from ILT20 have already performed very well. Hopefully, they can maintain their form and continue to improve."

"It is our responsibility to give players a chance, especially with the World Cup coming up in Sri Lanka. We want to see how good each player is and how they can contribute to the team."

On helping players and fitness updates:

"I want to support every player and help them seize the opportunity to play in the World Cup. Shaheen Shafirdi is currently rehabbing at the NCA, and we hope he will be fit before the tournament."

On the advantage of playing a series before the World Cup:

"Playing a series before the World Cup is a huge advantage. We will treat this series seriously, get accustomed to the weather and conditions, and use it to prepare ourselves fully for the World Cup."

Yeaahhh...SL is not the best opposition as of now to prepare for WC. A short 3 match T20 series against AU in SL could have been planned before WC.
Nah Srilanka is good apposition for these conditions. This is not going to be one sided contest as Pakistan poster's predicting.

@Rana @DeadlyVenom you guy's have one months for World T20 preparation in these same condition so no excuse this time on 15 February,2026.

Pakistani is playing all the matches in Lanka so let's see if they can win the World T20 2026.

:kp

This lineup is pretty much guaranteed the world cup squad i would rest saim and faheem for nafay and samad.

My friend, most likely they will add insult to the injury squeezing Babar in as well for the WC. If Babar is in as well with Shadab, qualifying to SF will be a miracle.

How happy Shadab is gonna be seeing the weather, that he does not have to bowl full tosses and half trackers and he gets a free ticket to world cup squad.

'' Big Three '' : what a huge loss :D

Any 'get, set, ready' series that Pakistan take part and do well- ultimately means they flop at the main event.

Hopefully this time it's different.

Pak squad: Pakistan XI: 1 Ayub, 2 Farhan, 3 Agha, 4 Fakhar, 5 Usman, 6 Shadab, 7 Nawaz, 8 Faheem, 9 Wasim, 10 Mirza, 11 Abrar

Pretty much what we thought would be!

What is the point of taking samad and nafay if you don't play them we know likes of saim fakhar farhan are guaranteed world cup spots why not play the new guys it don't matter if you lose

Shadab must have strong backup to be selected. Fraud Saqlain is not that powerful to select Shadab out of nowhere.

Pakistan have won the toss and have opted to field

Sri Lanka
(Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis(w), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka(c), Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara

Pakistan (Playing XI): Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan, Salman Agha(c), Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan(w), Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Salman Mirza, Abrar Ahmed

So let me get this right
.saim number one all rounder can bowl 4...nawaz..shadabb..agha...faheemm...wasimm and salman mirza why do we need ten milliom bowlers when batting is tue issue

What is the point of taking samad and nafay if you don't play them we know likes of saim fakhar farhan are guaranteed world cup spots why not play the new guys it don't matter if you lose
It does matter if you lose because Babar and Rizwan’s pr will force those two laanats in

So far, 3 of the 4 balls have been bowled attacking stumps - that is how t20 bowling should be

It does matter if you lose because Babar and Rizwan’s pr will force those two laanats in
Babar will be in the world cup squad maybe not rizwan we need someone like samad to bail out the time wasters like agha and babar

If Shadab is in the side as an all rounder then he's putting the balance off currently as inducting him eventually would mean that one of Nawaz, Faheem or a batter up top would be toppled in Pakistan's main WT20 XI. That batter would be one who fails to perform in this series

Salman is the best T20 bowler we have as of now. We need the other Afridi instead of Wasim in T20s

another Gone what is use of abrar when you have shadab nawaz and saim....i mean who picks this teams

How tf does Salman keep winning the bloody toss?? He couldn’t win a single toss in the Asia cup!

whats the point of this series now on these pitches?

shoudlve be just before the t20 wc.
