Following a pretty dismal end to the T20I series, which finished with a 2-2 draw, what are your thoughts looking ahead to the first ODI.

Very important series with a WC on the horizon.

Reminder of the squad:

ODI: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Ihsanullah, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Usama Mir. Reserves: Abbas Afridi, Abrar Ahmed and Tayyab Tahir

What XI would you choose? Predictions for the game?

King Babar will destroy New Zealand

Expecting 300 plus runs 🥰

Finally series victory for Pakistan 🇵🇰 🥳

Want all Pak players to play selfishly as they usually do and lose 5-0 Inshallah

Drop Shadab please let him take a break. Sometimes a break does wonders

I’m really worried about shahdab and shaheen . Their bowling has regressed alarmingly.
Also when you face a weaker opposition, it’s always the stronger team which ends up losing more.

1. Fakhar
2. Imam
3. Babar (c)
4. Abdullah
5. Haris Sohail
6. Rizwan (wk)
7. Salman
8. Shadab
9. Shaheen
10. Rauf
11. Ihsan/Naseem

Or Nawaz for Salman with spots interchanged with Shadab.

That's the top six I would play hopefully Abdullah is given a chance.

Iftikhar Ahmed not added to the squad. Really?

PCB has made a blunder here. Guy is in good touch and we need a reliable finisher at #6.

Pinidi's phatta wicket is going to favor New Zealand. Unless the ground staff makes it a turning track. New Zealand will destory Pakistan's bowling on Phatta wicket. Unfortunately, we are playing 2 matches here.

Yes, makes no sense. How did Mohd Haris got selected after scoring a Duck. And Chacha did not after performing. And also why is Shan Masood in the squad (I guess we all know why)

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Riz
Salman or Haris Sohail
M. Haris or Iftikar
Shadab
Nawaz
Shaheen
Haris
Naseem

Pity Ifti is not in squad

Shady selection policy.

Why select Shan when you already have a back up opener in Abdullah Shafiq or Rizwan (his best place). Waste of resources really.

Pakistan still stuck with that outdated early 90s approach of consolidate the initial.bursts leaving Uphill task to match the requirements of modern day cricket, NZ to win it 4-1

Predictable and boring, indeed.

Fact is that we do not have the resources to match other sides. If we try playing like other teams we'll most often end up with low scores or top order failures.

Guys like Babar, Rizwan know this and keep it safe to give the bowlers a chance. Very defensive approach even if its a practical one facing reality.

It's beyond me that they did not select Ifti but added Haris despite a poor innings.

This is fine. We know what Ifti can do and he will be selected for the WC if the others don't shine.

Whether the PCB meant it or not, we will actually be able to see what our bench players (Salman Agha and Haris) look like in the number 6 spot.

Pakistan need this series to finalize there playing XI in the WC.

1. Imam
2. Fakhar
3. Babar
4. Rizwan (wk)
5. ?
6. Chacha
7. Shadab
8. Nawaz
9. Shaheen
10. Naseem
11. Rauf or Ihsanullah

I'd say the XI is pretty much finalised. It's just the number 5 spot which Haris Sohail, Salman Agha and Mohammad Haris can slug it out for.

I know Ifti isn't even in the squad lol but he will be come India. His batting is looking good and his off spin will be handy on Indian wickets.

Got to be Haris Sohail for the experience and his record in Asia.

How many ODI games before the WC? Ifti hasn't played many ODI's for Pak and even someone like Ifti will need some games under his belt to feel confident in his finisher/Dhoni type role at #6.

Number 6 in ODI's is just perfect for someone of his ability to play according to the situation - match awareness. Something others lack. Might come with experience?

Pakistan and New Zealand contest a five-match one-day series starting on Thursday in Rawalpindi which serves as a crucial build-up to the World Cup.

The series offers both sides the opportunity to feel out each other’s strengths and weaknesses ahead of the World Cup in India in October-November.

The Black Caps shocked the home side by squaring a preceding five-match Twenty20 series 2-2 despite missing eight players — including skipper Kane Williamson — due to the ongoing Indian Premier League or injury.

Under stand-in skipper Tom Latham, New Zealand adapted to the conditions skillfully, roaring back from 2-0 down to win the third and fifth matches, with the fourth abandoned after rain.

Middle-order batter Mark Chapman has been added to the ODI squad after blazing 290 for just one dismissal in the T20 series — the most runs by a batter in a five-match T20I series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell, recently included in the five best cricketers of the year by Wisden, and middle-order batter Henry Nicholls further bolster the squad.

“It’s a new format and we have to adapt quickly for this challenging series,” said Latham, whose team are second behind Australia in the ODI rankings.

Pakistan, who are fifth, will again pin their hopes on skipper Babar Azam, the world’s top-ranked ODI batter for the last two years.

“These five matches are crucial for our World Cup preparation,” said Azam. “We have eight ODIs plus the Asia Cup (to get ready) and we will be utilising them to be well prepared.”

Pakistan have won five of the seven ODI series that Azam has captained. His two losses came against England in 2021 and New Zealand in January this year.

But New Zealand boast recent dominance over Pakistan.

Of the last six ODI series between them, New Zealand have won five and drawn one. Their last series defeat against Pakistan was at home in 2011.

The other matches of the current series are in Rawalpindi on Saturday followed by Karachi on May 3, 5 and 7.

Teams

Pakistan: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan, Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Haris, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Ihsanullah, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Agha Salman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Usama Mir

New Zealand: Tom Latham (captain), Tom Blundell, Chad Bowes, Mark Chapman, Matt Henry, Ben Lister, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Will Young.

Pakistan’s preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 will begin on Thursday when they will take on New Zealand in the first of the five One-Day Internationals. The series will commence at the iconic Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi, which will also host the second ODI on Saturday, before the two teams will fly south for the remaining three matches in Karachi.

The two sides will enter the series after an exciting five-match T20 International series that ended in a 2-2 draw on Monday. That well-fought series promises equally competitive and exciting five matches for which both the sides have added a player each. Pakistan have added wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris and New Zealand has included Mark Chapman, whose extraordinary batting efforts in the T20Is earned him player of the series award.

In addition to this series and in the lead up to the World Cup, which will be held in October/November, Pakistan are also scheduled to play three ODIs against Afghanistan in August and September’s ACC Men’s Asia Cup. As such, this series comes with the vital opportunity to gather the momentum.

Both Pakistan and New Zealand have qualified directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 after finishing in the top-eight of the 13-team ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. New Zealand topped the Super League with 16 wins in 24 matches, while Pakistan finished fifth with 13 wins in 21 matches. Pakistan’s series against Afghanistan was mutually postponed after both the sides were assured of places in the event proper.

Pakistan’s record since the start of last year has also been a remarkable one. They enjoy the win-loss ratio of 3, which is the best for any side. During this period, they have beaten Australia (2-1), West Indies (3-0) and the Netherlands (3-0) before losing to New Zealand (2-1) earlier in the year in Karachi.

Babar Azam: “Each and every match that we play from now on holds a great significance for us. This series is a brilliant opportunity for us to fine-tune our combinations and gather the momentum ahead of the mega events in the shape of Asia Cup and the much-anticipated World Cup.

“This team has done well in the past one year in the one-day format and I have firm faith in my boys that they will perform according to expectations in the exciting next seven months.”

Tom Latham: “The T20Is proved an outstanding series and we’re looking forward to switching to one day mode now. The preparation wasn’t ideal but for us that wasn’t an excuse. It was about just keep getting better game from game and keep learning. We did that and to come out with a series draw after being two down was awesome.

“It's going to be a tough ODI series on the back of what this T20I series has produced. We have seen some great games of cricket and the one-day series is going to be no different.

“It’s a new format, and we have to adapt quickly. Hopefully we can do that straight away.”

Thursday’s match will be the first between the two sides at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in 20 years. In 2003, New Zealand played two ODIs and lost both by seven wickets and 49 runs. A year earlier, Pakistan had defeated New Zealand by three wickets. Overall, Pakistan enjoy a healthy 18-5 on a head to head on home soil.

On the ICC ODI Team Rankings, fifth-ranked Pakistan has a chance to move to the top of the table. However, to make it happen, they will have to win all the five matches against the second-ranked New Zealand. A 4-1 series win will lift Pakistan to third.

In the ICC ODI Player Rankings, Pakistan captain Babar Azam is the No.1 ranked batter. He is sitting on 887 rating points and has a chance to break the 900-point threshold, which is the hallmark of a great batter. Zaheer Abbas (931) and Javed Miandad (910) are the only two Pakistan batters who have previously achieved the ratings of 900 or more.

Imam-ul-Haq (third), Fakhar Zaman (10th), Tom Latham (32nd), Haris Sohail (47th) and Mohammad Rizwan (64th) are the other prominent batters to feature in the series and will be eying an upward movement with strong performances.

New Zealand’s Matt Henry is the highest-ranked bowler from either side. He is ranked fifth, while Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi is 35 points behind in eighth position. If Shaheen takes the field on Thursday, then it will be his first ODI since taking one for 17 against the West Indies in Multan in June last year. Australia’s Josh Hazlewood is the number-one ranked bowler in the world.

Amongst the all-rounders, Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan is ranked 14th and needs 11 points to break into the top-10.

The series will also see the return of Chris Broad to Pakistan for the first time in 14 years. The former England opener and member of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees will referee in all the five ODIs with umpiring responsibilities to be shared between Ahsan Raza, Aleem Dar, Asif Yaqoob, Faisal Afridi, Joel Wilson, Langton Rusere and Rashid Riaz.

Squads:

Pakistan - Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Ihsanullah, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Haris (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Usama Mir

New Zealand - Tom Latham (captain), Adam Milne, Ben Lister, Blair Tickner, Chad Bowes, Cole McConchie, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Jimmy Neesham, Mark Chapman, Matt Henry, Rachin Ravindra, Tom Blundell and Will Young

Pakistan batter Haris Sohail landed awkwardly on his left shoulder during a fielding drill today.

His initial scans at a local hospital were satisfactory.

The medical team will assess him before the first One-Day International tomorrow to determine his participation in the match.

Imam ul Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Mohd Rizwan
Haris Sohail
Salman Agha
Shadab Khan
Mohd Wasim
Shaheen Shah
Haris Rauf
Naseem Shah

This is going to be the starting line up definitely. I thought abdullah shafique might open with fakhar, but after looking at the pre match press conference where imam was present, i guess he will be opening.

This is a good side to be honest. I am looking forward to see this line up do well and hopefully they don’t experiment too much with replacements this series. Give this line up a good run and they will do good

Guy is very unlucky with injuries. Hoepfuly he cements his place at 5 this series.

So who will play the finisher role with Haris Sohail out of the picture? Abdullah Shafique?

Imam ul Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Mohd Rizwan
Haris Sohail
Salman Agha
Shadab Khan
Mohd Wasim
Shaheen Shah
Haris Rauf
Naseem Shah

That is a very weak line up in my opinion

Imaam Ul Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Abdullah Shafique
Haris Sohail
Muhammed Rizwan
Imad Wasim
Usama Mir
Shaheen Afridi
Naseem Shah
Rauf/Ihsanullah

Imam-ul-Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Abdullah Shafique
Mohammad Rizwan
Salman Agha
Mohammad Nawaz
Shadab Khan (I would prefer Usama Mir but I'm assuming that the VC's position is secure)
Mohammad Wasim Jr
Shaheen Afridi
Ihsanullah

Without Ifti and Haris Sohail, the top 3 are once again required to carry the batting.

That is a very weak line up in my opinion

Any other line up to select from the available squad? Maybe abdullah shafiq at 4 and rizwan down the order but rizwan is better suited at 4. His power hitting is still not upto the level required down the order and the best he could do is rotate the strike at number 4. This is going to be an important series for him, and if he does not perform well, we might see haris or even sarfaraz keep wickets this worldcup

They should go with

1. Abdullah
2. Fakhar
3. Imam
4. Babar
5. Rizwan
6. Salman
7. Shadab/Usama
8. Nawaz/ Usama
9. Shaheen
10. Naseem/Ihsanullah
11. Rauf/Ihsanullah
