The batsman knows where he takes guard, he knows where the stumps are and unless he is batting with his eyes closed he knows if it pitched outside leg or not. The non striker has a harder time of judging it even if he stands closer to the stumps. He can help him out when it comes to whether its hitting the stumps or going over but the batsman should know where it pitched.
