So do or die, in the words of Rameez, for Pakistan.

Need 303 to win.

Should be difficult, but I think we have a game on.

A nice decent start of 5 an over, acceleration at the end, maybe some runs from Afridi today, should do it.

And I'd like to take the time to make a tribute to Sohail Tanvir - the wrong-footed ox-bakra who has bowled absolutely brilliantly today.

We'll be OK - but I'm just a touch concerned about Mendis because we haven't seen him before.

Need a good solid start from the openers against the pacers. Once the spinners come on, we must have a solid platform to just nudge the ball around for 1s and 2s

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | Asia Cup | Karachi | 29/06/2008| The Chase

Pakistani bowling was very inconsistant. Sohail Tanvir kept us in the game even though Rao Iftikhar tried his best to ive up 320+. Pretty good debut for Mansoor Amjad picking up a key wicket and not allowing many runs. Afridi wasnt his usual best and Malik was well...... Malik. Wahab Riaz had mixed results here. Started off poorly but finished with a decent few overs.

So what should our plan be?
Malik to open or is this the ideal spot for Afridi to open?
Attack from the start or conserve wickets?

Definitely a chase-able score. Even the recent tactic of slow starts and and then turning it on should be enough to get this score.

I worry though that they will start too slow again which makes early wickets falling far more damaging.

Also, the middle overs is where we have been turning it on lately, but Sri Lanka have good middle over bowlers.

Vaas, Kulasakera, Murali, Mendis, Mirando (Thushara).

Mirando and Kula shouldn't be problems at all. Vaas, just see off his first spell. Murali is a good bowler but we've handled him better than most.

This Mendis is an unknown quantity though and this is what concerns me.

Now we will know if this Pak batting line-up will be able challenge India or not.

Fair enough but then...

...why this worry?

Pak can do it....very chase-able.....they need to start quick and then build a slow partnership so that they need not hurry in the end....

dudes its fine.
They have 2 trundlers in Kulasekara and Vaas. Hopefully Afridi the Axe Man will tear them up.
Im thinking Salman will instead of Afridi

Very interesting to see where they play Afridi

Well that is a worry because if we are 66 for 20 and then lose two wickets, the pressure will be immense. I hope we can duplicate an Indian innings here. Want to see some fireworks!

If Pak loses today's match, they still have an outside chance of getting into finals. Am i right?

Afridi should come at three.

Leave the Shoaib M and Salman B opening combo go. But Afridi MUST play at the top here.

Sort of. Bangladesh have to beat India, and Sri Lanka have to beat India.

Well the cautious start has given us totals of 314 and 299 in our last two matches against India so ideally we should not deviate from it. But then we haven't chased either in those two matches so can we do the same this time under pressure?

And should we change the opening partnership that got us a 90 run start in our last match? Afridi has been pretty much useless down the order so you might be tempted to open with him but he is horribly out of form and 6 odd for 1 is not where pakistan want to be in the first few overs.

Actually, i'd keep him down the order.
On second thoughts, Malik and Butt and Younis can keep the run rate within reach, then leave it up to missy, mansoor and afridi to acelerate:)

dear admin i have some free links for pakpassion users is it ok with u guys if i provide them?

302 is pretty much a par score on these wickets and in these conditions. We can do this....a good start will be imperative.

Question: do the matches from the group stages carry over to the 2nd round?
ie: are Pakistan out if they lose this match?

BD-Ind is over already. I think you mean, both Pak and SL have to beat India ...

Pak shouldn't start slow.

Careful but agreesive innings needed. Someone has to play like Sehwag played in his last match.

Pak need to play lanka out in the powerplay itself.

We can definately do it (i mean we've scored practically 300 in all our previous games!)
The only worry i have is the pitch, its not the normal concrete pitch we've seen throughout this Asia Cup, its playing slower, its gripping. Its a great pitch for the SL spinners...

its time to gamble on afridi today
send him as opener
he wont do much better down the order anyway

or worse for that matter

I can't read the pitch, but I read others saying that the ball will start to spin and grip, and with them having 2 spinners...

?

We have to send Afridi up the order today

Yep! He cant play spin, the only hope is opening with him...

No problems, Rao will make a triple 100

He once averaged 80+ with the bat!

Infact, we should call him SIR Rao.

Where can i sign the petition for his knighthood?

The man speaks the truth, that logic's watertight.

If Pakistan manage to lose this...they will have only themselves to blame. There are no demons on this pitch.

Ofcourse, the are themselves to blame...

But cut the crap, Lanka have by FAR the best bowlers in this tournament...

Haha...Younus trying his best to smile...but i think Pak under severe pressure on this flat track, hope they don't choke

mamruut. cut the ****, you guys are the real chokers.

It still is and remains a flat track...

But ur talking like its going to be easy for PAK to chase 300 with the bowlers Lanka has...

Like Vaas, who avg 20 in the matches he played IN PAK... or the class of murali, while we only have 2-3 players who play spin well.

And the first match of Mendis against PAK, which arsenal is that big....

maamrut said:
haha...well chokers is what you'll be if you lose today.

You mean like that side which beat us in the Kitply Cup league game before losing the FINAL?

:))) :))) :)))

Hold on, do you define choke as not being able to chase 300?
Causee damnn dude, some Indian team failed at that hard two weeks back.
Dude those guys are straightt up CHOKERSSSSSS.

Ignore him lollol...let Lanka pile up 300 against India and then let's see how confident Maamrut is about these "flat" tracks...

wel, lets forget about us,its Pak we are concerned about atm.

Malik and Co..off to typical start,

bad start for PAK

Maybe we need to remind maamrut how many times INDIA did chase 300+....

Twice in ten attempts against us, I believe: one of those occasions we were missing nearly half of our bowlers (already injury hit).
