Karachi clash is dress rehearsal for World Cup face-off

Osman Samiuddin in Karachi

December 15, 2006

When Pakistan and the West Indies meet next, after the final ODI at Karachi tomorrow, it will be for the opening game of the 2007 World Cup in Jamaica in just under three months time. Signs emerged at Multan during the last ODI that cricket's premier tournament is looming on the minds of both sides, as line-ups were changed, experiments made and players tested.

Pakistan went about the experiments with greater zeal, though ultimately paying the price for them and it is unlikely, injuries permitting, that they will do so again with the same gusto. "We experimented in Multan and we felt that it was right to do it then as opposed to in the final game," said Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, at the National Stadium.

Their batting struggled in Multan, though they were, for various reasons, without their immense middle order trio of Younis Khan, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf for the first time since 2004. The captain is "98% certain" to play tomorrow, having almost fully recovered from a finger injury. Yousuf is in Karachi and also likely to play, as is Abdur Rahman, who has been so impressive in the two games that he has played so far. Woolmer insisted that there were still some positives to be drawn.

"We were without our middle three in Multan and the loss was disappointing but we can take positives from that in Yasir Hameed's batting and Mohammad Sami as well," Woolmer explained. "We have learnt a lot from that game and will be coming out in Karachi firing on all cylinders."

His opposite number, Bennett King, will no doubt hope his side does the same and a drawn series here will nicely bookend a long, arduous three-month road trip from which some light has emerged. "We made the final of two big competitions and only lost to a high-quality side on each occasion. So as far as ODIs are concerned, the results are very encouraging," King told reporters.

And the medium-term implications of a good finish are not lost on him. "It is important that we finish the series on a good note with Pakistan being in our World Cup pool. From our perspective, when we played Pakistan at home to where we are now, there has been a lot of improvement. We are a dangerous force in ODI cricket. We found some good form the other night in Multan and we're looking forward to this match."

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose return to the top of the order proved so crucial then, is fit to play despite struggling at various points through his innings but Jerome Taylor's inclusion, after being rested at Multan, is not as certain as might be expected from a bowler who has made such an impression. "We'll see how Jerome pulls up in the morning. In the subcontinent, with illnesses and injuries, it's a day-to-day thing. We're pretty sure of what side will play but we'll see. The wicket looks pretty flat and there isn't as much moisture to help the fast bowlers. We're looking forward to it and will pick the best side for the match."

Much of the talk of both men though was geared towards forthcoming challenges. Pakistan head off to South Africa for a full series in January and the West Indies to India for a series of one-day internationals in the same month. Soon after that comes the face-off at Sabina Park. In which case, tomorrow becomes the first of numerous dress rehearsals for the real thing.

My head says Pakistan, my heart says Lara

Pakistan will tomorrow bid farewell to arguably the greatest batsman of this era. Brian Lara arrived in the early 1990s as the mighty West Indian dynasty folded. Through his genius and that of Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, West Indian cricket continued to be a force for the rest of that decade.
The question that nobody will ever be able to answer is just how brilliant Lara might have been had he had a half decent team to support him? My guess is that he would have been unstoppable. And for much of his career he threatened to be, particularly in the days when individual batting records were falling to him with ease. But the hopping maestro from Trinidad has not just been a man for records. He has saved his country on numerous occasions against the best teams.

From the beginning Lara has had a particular liking for Pakistan. In the 1992 World Cup he destroyed Imran's team with an effortless dominance, a harbinger of the coiled beauty that he would unleash on all nations.

As with all heroes, he has divided opinion in his homeland but elsewhere his genius has been unequivocally acclaimed. The love for Lara has been evident in the Champions Trophy and now this West Indian tour of Pakistan. And Lara has responded like a true great, handling the fortunes of his team with immense wisdom, dexterity, and sportsmanship.

Some readers of this blog, including Mr Euceph Ahmed who generally enjoys disagreeing with every word I write, have requested a piece on Lara. We should all give Lara the send off he deserves, and I have no doubt that the Karachi crowd will not be found wanting.

This may be a World Cup year and a winning finale would be nice for Pakistan. But it would be equally heart-warming to see the last piece of Lara magic on Pakistani soil. For this match only, my head says Pakistan but my heart says Lara.

Should be a good match. I am looking forward to it.

Starts at 1 EST right? In about 3.5 hours?

around 3 hours to go, hopefully a typical Karachi run-fest in prospect.

news is that faisal, afridi, rao and farth is not playing according to GEO IF thats true. I think pakistan have choosen a right combination

Faisal, Afridi Rao, and Farhat not playing?? Would prefer Afridi to play..... but I think its a good combination.

dropping farhat and faisal makes no sense.

faisal looked by far to be the best batsmen in multan

and farhat has been getting decent scores (no matter how bad he looks while doing it).

anyway if that geo report is true then i suspect this to be the team

hameed
hafeez
malik
moyo
inzi
akmal
razzaq
rehman
rana
sami
gul

Team looks good ,nice to see Rehman back into the side ,and excited to see no Afridi, personally nothing against him, he just needs to sit out for a while and rethink his game and opproach.

Kashif: Faisal looked vulnerable against medium fast bowler like smith. He is a very good player spin bowling but unforunately his technique against quicker bowler is suspectible

Teams: Pakistan have made four changes to the team that played in Multan. Shahid Afridi, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Faisal Iqbal and Imran Farhat miss out while Inzamam, Yousuf, Umar Gul and Adbur Rehman are back in.

can't believe farhat has been dropped .. he hasn't looked pretty but he has been putting up runs ... hafeez has been the exact oppisite --> good technique and confident but hasn't scored any runs.

i think farhat has not been dropped. It's more like a rest.

I say so because i think Pakistan want to have a look at Hameed and see whether he can be part of future plans, especially the SAF test series.

Hafeez chance to play the tests are liking thin unless he can get into some form in this game or get some runs in practice matched in SAF.

Never thought of it like that. If that is true then they value Farhat more then Hafeez which is true.

Farhat is being rested.
I would have liked to see Faisal play too. He looked in good touch much better then Hameed. We need a backup to Big 3 and I am not sure there is any at the moment. Faisal is a good prospect.

Salam guys,
We seemed to have selected a decent team for this one and we will be bowling 1st(our strength)....so InsAllah we have a fair chance in winning this game

To me, Farhat is certain to play in SAF tests.
The question is about Hafeez or Hameed. Then do Pakistan need to get a Salman or Tuafeeq in the team.

I must say though that Pakistan would love to see Hafeez in the ODI sqaud because of his edge with bowling which could be valuable on slow Windies pitches.

Why did Pakistan win the toss and choose to bowl...just when you get the best batting track in the series with hot weather and no cloud cover? ***?!

Yes, i would have rested Malik for Iqbal for this game.

But the perfect team that I would have choose!!! W00t

Nice way of saying kicked out?

This may be Sami's last chance to fight for a place in the SAF/WCup squad!
It will also be interesting to see how Hafeez, Hameed and Malik play.

Is Younis in? If not the who bats at three? Malik? or Iqbal? Why is that piece of crap stll in. It should be Afridi...he's 10x better.

Guys, do any of you know why chanderpaul always has these black things underneath his eyes? is it of any significance or is it just some sort of sunscreen etc?

Kamran is listed to bat at 3 on the score card shown.

I think its a warrior appearence he wants to convey to his audiance

i guess he adapted it from Rugby ...

So does this mean Gayle is Rana's bunny now?

I think the bunny theory applies to more then 2 series.

i guess we'd find out in the w/c

gul is not looking very threatening.

IMO rana is clearly the better ODI bowler.

listen guys, in international soccer games, usually the referee will be from a different nation. however, pakistanis are officials for cricket games while pakistan plays. wht do u think? it's good to see pakistani officials being unbiased.

does anyone get injured as often as Inzi while fielding? His fitness is shambolic.

Sanjay talking about the injuries...

"That's the reality of modern day cricket. You've got to carry on with those niggers here and there."

no comment.

u are certainly a newcomer to this game.
In ODI cricket, one umpire is from the home side while in test both are foreign umpires.

actually its just the ICC regulations, so nothing special, every country has the home umpire advantage in the ODIs.

in ODIs the game will have one international umpire (dosen't have to be on the elite panel) and one local umpire.

in Tests, both umpires must be from the ICC's ELITE panel, nationality dosen't matter.

i think we are past the time of criticizing Inzi's fitness. He is aging fast; we should hope and pray that he can carry us through the cup with some success.

In test matches, both umpires must be from a neutral countries. In ODIs, one umpire must be from the host country. This is done to promote domestic umpiring.

Quite a rubbish over from Sami. 9 runs off it and the fastest being 137 and the slowest being under 130

Awesome over from Rana. Good changes of pace. And Simmons did well to keep out the yorkers.

i dont know why but i have this feeling that sami is going to do well in this game on a low bounce wicket

BTW who do you think will win that black car?....i would love to give it to Umar...just hope he gets a few wickets in this game!
