Pakistan's Inam Butt clinches gold at Beach Wrestling World Series

Pakistan's top wrestler Inam Butt on Saturday clinched gold in the 90kg category at the Beach Wrestling World Series Rome, Radio Pakistan reported.

According to the report, Butt defeated his Ukrainian competitor 3-0 in the final.

Earlier in the competition, he had defeated Romania's Mihai Nicolae Palaghia in the semi-final by 3-0 as well.

In a video shared on Twitter after the event, Butt credited the Pakistan Wrestling Federation for his win. He also thanked the Pakistan Sports Board, its director general Asif Zaman and Federal Minister of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Dr Fehmida Mirza.

"They helped me a lot. We were not getting visas because of Covid. It is because of their efforts that I got a visa and came here," Butt shared.

In a separate tweet, Butt shared he had cut 16kg in weight to "make Pakistan a champion".

A number of officials and fellow sportspersons rushed to congratulate Butt, who has also won medals for Pakistan in the past.

"Congratulations Inam for winning another gold first place medal for Pakistan," tweeted Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.

Weightlifter Talha Talib also congratulated the wrestler, saying "another gold for Pakistan".

Several cricketers, including Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz and Ahmad Shahzad congratulated Butt for winning another medal and making Pakistan "proud".

This was not Butt's first win in international competitions. He had won the gold medal at the inaugural ANOC World Beach Games in Doha in 2019.

He added another feather to his cap when he won gold in the 92kg wrestling category at the South Asian Games in 2019.

The Gujranwala-born wrestler was also Pakistan's sole gold medalist in the 2018 Commonwealth Games where he competed in the 86kg category.
 
LAHORE: Sports Minister of Punjab, Rai Taimoor Bhatti has announced a cash prize of PKR 10 lacs cash for Inam Butt who won the gold medal in the 90Kg category of the World Beach Wrestling Championship.

In a Tweet on Sunday, the provincial minister announced to award Inam in the same ceremony where Paralympics 2021 gold medalist Haider Ali will be acknowledged.

“We are proud of you Inam, you are the true image of Pakistan,” Bhatti wrote. “On your achievement, the Punjab government will give you a cash prize of PKR 10 Lacs. You will receive this prize from CM Punjab Usman Buzdar on your return to the country,” he said.

“Punjab government will keep on working with the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan for the upliftment of sports in the country,” he added.

It must be noted here that Inam remained unbeaten in the championship and beat Ukrainian wrestler Oleksii Yakovchuk by 3-0.

Earlier, Haider gave Pakistanis a moment to cheer after he won the first-ever gold for Pakistan in the Paralympics games. In the Discus Throw event, Haider threw a 55.26 metres throw in his fifth attempt out of the total six to claim gold.

Following his achievement, Punjab government announced cash prize of PKR 25 lacs for the athlete.

Inam Butt clinches gold at National Games

Renowned national wrestler and Olympian Inam Butt secured gold for Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in the 92kg category here in the 35th National Games on Tuesday.

Inam, 36, created history after winning the national championship for the record 18th time.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Army’s Nouman Zaka remained in the second position with silver, whereas Punjab’s Rana Faizan and Railway’s Haider Ali secured bronze medals.

It is pertinent to mention that Inam boasts an impressive wrestling career, having secured various accolades in multiple international events.

The wreslter hailing from Gujranwala has eight gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, including the Commonwealth Games, World Beach Championships, World Beach Games, Asian Beach Games, and South Asian Games.

For the unversed, the 35th National Games Karachi are currently underway in the metropolitan city, featuring a range of multi-sport events from 6 to 13 December 2025.

The event is bringing together athletes from across the country in a sweeping programme that spans endurance sports, combat disciplines, precision events, and crowd-favourite team competitions.

The event features Olympic mainstays such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and fencing. Moreover, Kabbadi, tug of war, netball, and boxing games are also part of the competitions.

It is pertinent to mention that the National Games, first held in 1948, stand among Pakistan’s most prominent multi-sport events and frequently serve as a pathway to international selection.
