It's actually should have been 10-6-2-2. England was effectively 10 for 4 or so on day 3 with 2nd new ball just in corner, when the game was called off & later awarded to Poms.
Not surprising at all actually, rather expected. Two main reasons I see for this is - 1st one obvious, most times Oval hosts the last Test of the series or at least penaltimate Test; I can't recall ever Oval hosting a Test even in July; it's August or sometimes September. Naturally, touring teams get the time to acclimatize in English condition better by then. Also, being Asian team, it's an advantage to play a Test at the late end of English summer when wickets are settled, more batting friendly & less green. Even IND & SRL has best record at Oval among other British venues.
Second reason is the wicket. Oval is the fastest English wicket with true bounce & pace but less sidewise movement. It's gives value for the shot, best English wicket to hit through the line & using wristy flicks. At the same time it's the best English wicket to bowl flat out fast & spinners will always enjoy bowling on Oval for the pace & bounce; it also cracks best on 2nd innings unless the weather is wet. And, I am sure once we play Test there, our batting will enjoy most among English venues. Cardiff has a similar surface, but a much smaller playing area, where we did won 2 ODI against AUS & NZ.
The best wicket in world for a team with core strengths like PAK - flamboyant free scoring batsmen & fast bowlers who can move it in air, more than on surface. PAK hardly ever had a hit the deck pacer, though there had been express fast bowlers, but they are more comfortable on brown wickets than green. Oval is actually EXACTLY opposite to the wickets we see at UAE, which is the worst type of wicket for a team like PAK. UAE wickets have helped PAK's ranking because matches end in direct result there & PAK winnng more.
One reason being duration of Test matches in UAE (450 overs, in PAK, often in most venues it's like 350-380 overs), that gives better team (hosts) more time to force a result & bring spinners in the game more in last phase. 2nd being tourists caught under prepared - by 3rd Test, they are behind or out of the series, because every team plays 1st Test in UAE within a week of landing there (& after one 3 day joke that allows all 16 players to play in one match - 11 to bat & field). Apart from SRL (& Poms) every touring team has better record at UAE on 3rd Test (or 2nd, in a 2 Test series). It looks better for PAK on paper from W/L - only because we never knew what was the potential of PAK team playing all those Tests at home on Oval LIKE wickets, where even in this bankrupt days of 2000s, last 2 Test (would have been 3) ended almost one sided for the tourists.
Old Karachi wicket was similar to Oval, where if I am not wrong PAK's 1st Test loss was in 2000 against Poms - probably on 36th Test there. Now, PAK's wickets are at wrose level of UAE - dead slow, low & gradually dying wicket which hardly offers anything to pacer or strokemakers and doesn't break for spinners with duration because of excessive soil content; in one word - dull.
