Pakistan's population goes up by 12,000 every day!

Next year at this time, there will be approx. 4,380,000 more. That is more than the total population (not the yearly increase) of countries like Kuwait, Croatia, Uruguay, Bosnia, Jamaica, Qatar, Bahrain, etc.

New Zealand's total population is just over 5 million. Every 14 months, Pakistan's population goes up by the equivalent of New Zealand's.

Historical population of Pakistan:
1970: 58 million
1980: 78
1990: 107
2000: 142
2010: 179
2020: 221

If the birth rate does not decline very soon, then the future is bleak.

It is concerning. Overpopulation is never a good thing. It can make things difficult for government when overpopulation happens.

That is what I have been saying for the last 5 years. Population growth is the biggest curse for Pakistan. No government has done anything to reduce such a steep increase in population. It is a ticking time bomb.

Among Muslim countries, Pakistan has the highest fertility rate. Fertility rate is the number of children a married women has in her lifetime. We have a fertility rate if 3.56. In other words, every married women in Pakistan has at least three kids in her lifetime.

Saudi Arabia’s fertility rate is 2.3 while Bangladesh has a rate of 2.1.All other Muslim countries have been successful in reducing population growth.

Two years back, when Imran Khan talked about family planning, he faced severe backlash from right-wingers, who branded family planning against Islam and a conspiracy by the West to reduce Muslim population. Since then, the PTI-led government is quiet.

If you ask me, Pakistan’s population is already too high. It is too late to slow its growth.

Most Pakistanis hold this hideous view that Allah will provide for every child that comes to this earth even if they do not have a job or any resources.

I watched a documentary about Pakistan’s underage maids and a father said he sent his 8-year old to Islamabad to work as a maid because they are poor.

While that 8-year old was working, the father had one more newborn! Basically, a significant number of Pakistanis treat their children like cattle and have zero regard for their well-being!

Do you mean condom and pills? Yes!

I only don't like abortion and I am completely against abortion after first trimester.
As most people should be some think as long as it's in the belly baby has no rights
but surprisingly Islam is very flexible with abortion thing but still people don't do abortion and I have no idea why
I am sure if it's your 7th or 8th child you need to do something about it

not if you know how to create jobs - especially through construction / I.T / pharmaceutical

we need to start selling our products to other nations-

Yup.

A couple shouldn't have more than 3-5 children in subcontinent and also in Africa. Overpopulation is a big problem in those two regions.

Its a major problem. But PK is a very family oriented society and there is a lack of opportunities for women. There is also poverty and a lacking in social mobility, hence just breed like rabbits because there isn't much else to do.

If 3-5 children is fine then Pakistan is doing excellent in controlling population due to being in the lower range of 3-5.

Nope. Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Yemen, Afghanistan, Somalia, Chad, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mauritania, Tajikistan to name a few have much higher rates.

The higher the birth rate, the lower the standard of living. The countries that you have listed are not exactly the model of prosperity and happiness. Most of them rate high in corruption, poverty, violence, class differences, low education, lack of medical care, low acceptability of their passport, etc. Pakistan should aim higher.

If women start working fertility rate goes down other option is increasing literacy rate, happened in most Indian states. Now only few Hindi belt states remain with the high fertility rate.(UP, Bihar) except for one NE state.

BD is also a good example

a large population is very useful, especially if they are young and have some skill, the real problem is a lack of education, finance, entrepreneurship, brain drain, etc.

just need to get head out of cloud cuckoo land assuming that the state of a country as poor as pakistan can support these people, need greater economic liberalism, enforcement of contract and devolution.

pakistan could undercut most global industries if they wanted to, and im not talking about basic goods, im talking about value add goods like chemicals, pharma, mechanical components, aerospance, etc, but need the the mindset to look beyond assuming the governments job is to provide roti, kapra, makaan, and redirect it towards facilitation of private or quasi-private business development.

True but I wouldn’t included them in the analysis. They are countries that are not worth emulating.

Bangladesh is a good example of how governments can reduce population growth. Bangladesh had a fertility rate of 2.1 which means its population is constant which is amazing!

The key to Bangladesh’s success was that in invested in education and reigned in extremists.

Unplanned population increase creates multiple challenges: CM

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has said that increase in population and ever-increasing problems were a threat to human survival.

In his message on World Population Day, the Chief Minister said that an unplanned increase in population resulted in creating multiple challenges and this day highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between population and resources.

He added that the whole world including Pakistan was facing an unusual situation due to coronavirus.

Meanwhile, protection of mother and child was a priority of the government and steps had been taken to provide the best healthcare facilities to womenfolk, he added. Access to voluntary family planning had been ensured while remaining safe from coronavirus.

He maintained that public cooperation was vital for overcoming the problems relating to population increase.

The quality of life can be improved by overcoming the population, he said.

The government was utilizing resources to expand the scope of services relating to family planning.

It had become a global challenge to enhance resources according to population increase and the people should play their role for increasing awareness about family planning, the CM concluded.

90s kids would remember the 'bachay do hi achay' ad and 'chaabi ki goli'.... I wonder why we don't have these widespread information advertisements anymore to control population

During Benazir's tenure, she had a Ministry for Population Welfare i-e population control and they had that slogan "Bache do hi Achay". While advocating for 2 children family, she was giving birth to her third child :)

Rapid Population growth is a problem only if you make it as one. We are a country that has no clue how to utilise it’s human resource. Hell, we cannot even hold a census without controversy.

Exactly. BD has done a commendable job of lowering birth rate and boosting economy in the past 15 year all centered arounf increasing female literacy and encouraging them to enter the work force.

In the past 5 months, Pakistan's death toll due to Covid is about 5,200 to-date. In this same period, the population went up by approx. 1,800,000 after deducting the Covid and all other deaths from all causes.

When you visit Pakistan for a trip and the amount of small kids you see is astonishing to say the least. They are everywhere in restaurants, homes, parks. Millions of kids are out of school and without any skills, it is going to backfire if it hasn’t already. The whole Asian continent is severely overpopulated. We are only good at making babies non-stop.

Yes. They are literally EVERYWHERE!

Due to pressure by religious elements. In 2018, Imran Khan held a convention on birth control which was held by Imran Khan and attended by the CJ and Maulana Tariq Jameel. They talked about the importance of family planning. However, as soon as the word spread, religious elements got fired up and said family planning is haram because Allah provides for every child that is brought to this world. Since then, awareness about family planning has taken a backseat!

It had taken a backseat all throughout the 2000s.

Might do more than jack if done now, literacy rate and people's overall wealth has improved since the 90s. Also majority of the population has access to cellphones and mobile data so spreading the word and awareness is alot easier.

To give an example, this government launched an emergency cash scheme for mazdoors that were effected by corona. The only way you could sign up for the cash was through an online portal where you had to enter your details and particulars. I thought this is going to flop like no tomorrow, the average mazdoor isn't educated or connected enough to access such a portal. Much to my surprise more than 3 million mazdoors took benefit of the emergency cash.

Fertility rate trend in Paksitan

Pakistan_fertility.jpg

It has dropped drastically from 1990. Trend is downward and in 10-15 years it should reach in lower 2s.

In my family, my grandparents generation had around 5 kids. My parent's generation had 2 to 4 kids (average probably 3) and my generation has 2 to 3 kids. So it is definitely falling. But I imagine a lot of poor people in Pakistan have a lot more kids.

Also for all these kids to be an asset you need to feed them, and give them a modern education so they can compete for modern jobs and make stuff that can be exported. Sadly, half the kids in Pakistan are out of school and many don't get enough food and are stunted. That is more like a ticking time bomb than an asset.

It is not hard to find someone with a bit of education who can enter these details for a person who may not even have any education.

All educated and well to do people should have a minimum of 3 kids. Otherwise it is a waste of the knowledge, cultural and financial capital they have accumulated over generations. It is the poor whose kids should be limited to maximum 2, just right to provide manual labour to society without adding burden.

Population increase is fine if the kids are from quality parents.

This does not make sense. With your logic poor will stay poor. With children from rich backgrounds getting more opportunities . The rich can also be more generous and do charity rather than worry how to spend the wealth

If the poor want to have more than 2 kids, they should stop being poor first.

What do you mean by stop being poor? Money does not grow on trees. One of reason poor try to have more kids is to have multiple sources of income. Ofcourse there are other reasons too

It is decreasing but at a very slow pace. Bangladesh and Pakistan has same fertility rates in 1970s but now Bangladesh’s FR stands at 2 while Pakistan’s FR is almost double at 3.56.

The damage has already been done. There is no going back.

This short term thinking keeps them poor. If they focus on having less kids and let them get education, they have better chances of escaping poverty. Forced vasectomy should be performed on the poor after 2nd child.

Regarding providing education to poor is a different matter. it should be made possible by your corrupt governments. But your suggestion of rich people should have more kids than poor is absurd

It's a pan-South Asia problem. Not just Pakistan.

The rich should pay more taxes and the poor get subsidies, but when it comes to kids, the rich cannot have more kids. When they are the one bearing the burden of these poor destitute. More rich kids means more taxes which go into feeding those who are a burden on society.

The poor may not pay taxes but they are indirect tax payers. they work in factories and farms which generates the products that big companies sell. How many of rich work in these low level jobs. Even if they are in a desperate situation they won’t get into these jobs.
Anyway I am talking about other countries and not sure how it works in Pakistan. So let’s leave at it

It is the rich who owns these factories and farms and provides employment to the poor. Yet the rich cannot produce more like them when they are ones who bear the burden for the other good for nothing people who deserve nasbandi.

Here is something scary:
............................ Pakistan ...... USA
Area sq. kms.......... 882,000.......9,800,000
Population (million)......221...........331
Pop. daily growth......12,000.......5,300

The USA is rich, has plenty of land and can afford more people. Pakistan has more than twice the daily population growth of the USA with less population, area and resources. At this rate in another 50 years, there will be major shortages of water, electricity, gas and mass famine, traffic congestion, pollution, disease, unrest and violence due to unemployment and social differences. This problem is much worse than Covid.

Very slim chance. This rate shouldn't last for 50 years.

WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s total population is estimated at 220.9 million and it is growing rapidly with an annual fertility rate of 3.6 children per couple, says a world population report.

The 2020 World Population Data Sheet — released by the US Population Reference Bureau, Washington — also estimates that the world today has a total of 7.8 billion inhabitants.

Referring to the Covid-19 crisis, the report warns that “population density in urban areas, household size, and population aging contribute to our vulnerability to pandemics”.

Also read: Why the Covid-19 crisis is an urban crisis

The report places South Asia among the fastest growing regions in the world and within the region, it marks Afghanistan and Pakistan as the fastest growing populations. Afghan-istan has a faster growth rate than Pakistan, 4.5 per couple. But because of high death rates and low life expectancy, the country’s total population is still 38.9m.

At Pakistan’s growth rate — 3.6 — a population doubles in 19.4 years. A country needs to bring its growth rate down to 2 per cent a year to reduce its population. The replacement fertility rate is 2.1, the average number of children a couple needs to have to replace themselves.

Bangladesh’s total population in 2020 is estimated at 169.8m, with an annual growth rate of 2.3.

With a total of 1.424bn people, China still has the largest population in the world but has been able to reduce its fertility rate to 1.5. China’s population is projected to decrease by 2050.

With 1.4bn people, India has the second largest population in the world but has reduced its fertility rate to 2.2.

The United States has a total of 329.9m inhabitants and between 2020 and 2050 its population is projected to increase, but at a much slower pace than recent decades. The US has an annual fertility rate of 1.7, which forces it to allow immigrants to strengthen its work force.

In 91 countries and territories — nearly 45 per cent of the world’s population — total fertility rates are below replacement level.

Middle Africa is the youngest region where 46 per cent of the population is under the age of 15 years. Southern Europe is the world’s oldest region with 23 per cent of the population aged 65 or above.

Asia is the world’s most populous region and its overall population is projected to increase by 15 per cent — from 4.6bn in 2020 to 5.3bn in 2050.

However, the pattern of future population change varies within the region from a 3 per cent decline in East Asia to a 38 per cent increase in Western Asia. Asia’s total fertility rate is below replacement level at 2.0.

Meeting won’t be helpful. We need to introduce an aggressive birth control policy. It is already TOO late!

this boat has sailed, best to put mind to decide how to put the human capital to use for something, population control goes against politics of both liberal and conservative sides.

Pakistanis are getting to used to the easy life if population is going up at such rates. I have seen myself kids spending all their money on pizzas and fried chicken. Population should be going down if they are sending their fighting age males abroad like we do in Britain.

Where are you sending your fighting age males?

It has been two years since PTI came into power and nothing has been done in this regard!

Yes quite pathetic of PTI to not fix the malaise of 70 years in 2 years.

Selected Niazi isteefa do!

By the end of the century, Pakistan’s population is projected to be roughly 1/3rd of India’s

The rich countries need labour, the poor countries have the labour. Only problem- most are uneducated and will add little to rich countries.

how quickly our population is getting increased our reserves are also diminishing at a similar pace.

Dont know what's going to be happen with this country in next 4 to 5 years.

This statistic has no value because it fails to segregate first born babies with second, third, fourth and son.

Couples with no kids will not stop having kids just because Pakistan is overpopulated. As a couple, you want to become parents and you don’t care - and shouldn’t care - how it is going to be impact the country. It is not your problem or your responsibility.

Having 4-5 kids when you are financially struggling is obviously a problem but it is a problem that you will suffer from at an individual level and you will not necessary worry about it’s implications on society and economy.

The idea that people should worry about population growth and take a holistic approach is one of the most absurd and ridiculous socioeconomic/civic concept. It is complete cuckoo.

Our demographic population pyramid is very bottom heavy. High amounts of consumers (young people). This will keep things at inflationary levels.

Serious Matter; we should join our heads. Recourses in terms of Electricity, Gas, water and etc. are not enough to fulfill needs. So we should work on controlling the population like China unless we have resources for all.

The greater the population the greater the market opportunities for foreign investment.

Works for China and India, and they don't give a rats backside when it comes to poverty or quality of life.

And remember, the only reason why the West is open to immigration is because of a declining population. The West needs people to keep markets in demand such as property and to pay for Pensions.

Read up on Japan too, the country is heading for disaster as their population is declining so there's less people to prop up the economy and social liabilities like pensions.

Pakistan should be aiming for 500M population within the next 20 years.
