Lahore May 23, 2016:

PCB Chairman Shaharyar M. Khan has announced a nationwide schools tournament which will be known as the Hafeez Kardar Cup. This tournament will be organized by the PCB and will be administrated by all 16 regions and their 97 cricketing districts. The nation-wide tournament will feature private schools as well as well government schools for the first time in the history of Pakistan Cricket. Junior selectors will be tasked to monitor this tournament and the best players will be sent to the NCA for coaching. The finals of the Kardar Cup will be held in Karachi / Lahore depending on weather. It will be ensured that the matches do not interfere with schools examinations. The main objective of the schools program is to build a national base for junior cricket including more educated junior players.

The Kardar Cup will start from next cricket season and will be administered on behalf of PCB by Mr. Junaid Zia who will be PCB’s consultant on Schools Cricket.

A separate program for a national club championship and an inter—university competition will be announced shortly by PCB.

Every school needs to be giving some sort of funding by the PCB to buy equipment and train properly.

Kids from govt schools can't pay out of their pocket for equipment.

Vey good news. Reviving school cricket is extremely important.

A step in the right direction but patience and persistance is the key. And sad truth is we as nation lack in both these qualitites. But i appreciate the motive and hope execution is upto the mark as well. As in words of a poet "Shikwa_e Zulmat krnay se behtar hai, k apnay hissay ka ik deep jalatay jao"

PCB should use Educational boards to cancel registration or atleast incur heavy fines on schools not participating in this tournament

Seems like PCB is doing a lot these days but a lot of damage has already been done. I would still sack Shahryar and Sethi though.

Hope is being able to see that there is
light despite all of the darkness

Brilliant news. Mind boggling why it was never implemented earlier considering both India and Sri Lanka have had established school cricket systems for decades.

Long-term, I would like to see this as the established pathway to FC cricket. Each province should have one premier FC team which would compete in domestic cricket. Players would be selected from the inter-school and university tournaments. Of course, provinces could host their own inter-province tournaments and scout camps to widen their pool of players, but the school system should be the established pathway.

Not sure if I explained myself properly, but I'm drawing mainly from the NBA and NFL system where each year players are drafted from college competitions.

The only thing I would complain about is I wish it was established back when I was in school in the 90's :)

Would have to tightly manage process because nepotism can easily kick in at this level with Shakil Sheikh like fathers of kids in the schools. How you stop this from happening? Does Inzamam watch every game to make sure?

New obsession, educated cricketers

That's not the point of this. It's a side benefit, main thing people cry about as to lack of quality cricketers is a lack of a grass roots system, this is a step in establishing that. This is where you build a solid technique and learn the basics, not at the international level where a coach is supposed to baby feed a grown man into something else according to some here.

I understand the major thing is school cricket which is beneficial but nowdays chairman every statement comprises educated cricketer phrase

The world leader in sports, USA, selects all its sportsmen from universities. They rule in the world in most Olympic and team sports. Coincidence? I think not.

Excellent initiative. I hope this becomes a permanent thing..

Brilliant initiative. Let's hope this doesn't stop after a season or two though. It needs to be an ongoing thing.

Great initiative. Hope it's done and implemented properly. Also, PCB should get on board with provincial Governments to arrange for grounds for school teams and with their kit sponsor to provide for equipment. Also, former first class cricketer as coaches. And if we are to implement American System properly, cricket scholarships for outstanding cricketers in top tier universities.

If they took it as seriously as they do American football and Baseball, they would.

Nah that's a misconception.. They would need many things for it to fall in place.. Moreover they like their own sports ice hockey, American football, NBA etc they happy with all that.. They been trying soccer but haven't been competitive at top level for years now..

or may be you talking about only balochistan or some backward rural areas?

He specifically said Pakistan. Let's not your false patriotism ignore the facts, 47% of the kids in Pakistan are not in school for various reasons.

Are you kidding me?

USA has been in the Round of 16/Quarters thrice in the last 4 FIFA WC. That is an excellent achievement for a country in which soccer/football is considered an extremely boring sport and hardly anyone watches it.

Not true at all. Last survey put the figure of enrollment above 70% at the very least.

Did you read the post I replied to before posting an out of context ignorant reply?

He mentioned USA would become the best at cricket if they tried.. There are lot of other factors involved in that.. USA has been trying soccer but still not no where near the best at it.. USA have their own sport and they don't need any other sports since football is the only true global sport they try at that..

Anyways no point arguing about something which will never happen..

Come on dude, it's wrong.

Quick google search shows 25mill kids don't go to school.. 58% only enrol for primary school so 42% seem to be the right number.. Not sure how accurate the stats are it was in an article from tribune.pk site not sure how reliable that publication is..

Check this WB figure from 2014.

Its put gross enrollment of all school going kids in both sexes at 93%. (It should be noted that we are still below the South Asian average which is above a 100% since older folks can also be enrolled in primary school and hence increase the number beyond a 100%)

LAHORE May 31, 2016: Mr. Shahid Hafeez Kardar, Vice Chancellor Beaconhouse National University and son of Pakistan’s first Test Captain Mr. Abdul Hafeez Kardar (late), called upon Chairman PCB Mr. Shahayar M. Khan at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

Various issues of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting. Having recently shared PCB’s plans to revive university cricket at a meeting of Vice Chancellors of various universities, Chairman PCB discussed these ideas in detail with Mr. Kardar. “While the revival of club cricket is necessary, PCB is also keen to develop linkages with educational institutions across the country in order to further strengthen the game at the grassroots level,” stated Mr. Shaharyar M. Khan.

Chairman PCB shared his plans for the recently announced nationwide school cricket tournament. The tournament will be known as the Hafeez Kardar Cup. This tournament will be organized by PCB and will be administered by all 16 regions. Junior selectors will be tasked to monitor this tournament with the best players being shortlisted for training at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

Mr. Shahid Hafeez Kardar thanked Chairman PCB for honoring his late father Mr. Abdul Hafeez Kardar, Pakistan’s first ever Test Captain, by naming the planned school cricket championship in his name. In a bid to promote grassroots cricket in Pakistan, Mr. Shahid Hafeez Kardar announced a trophy and cash award of PKR 100,000 for Best School Player of the Year on behalf of the Kardar family.

“Cricket is a unifying force and a key tool for national integration. I wish Pakistan Cricket Board success in its efforts to further promote the game in the country,” said Mr. Kardar

It isn't all it's made up to be. Look at the University of North Carolina academic scandal. Many times athletes, especially in football and basketball, are given very easy courses of studies, tutors who "assist" them with homework (really, they do 90-100 percent of the work and the athlete signs their name, only the tutor and athlete sit together), etc. Why do you think so many professional American athletes go bankrupt within 2-3 years after leaving their sport?

You do have a point for the Olympic sports, those students are more academically motivated as they do not necessarily have their sights set on representing the US in Olympic or world competition.
