Blackburn academy boss named Ofsted interim board chair

Blackburn’s Sir Hamid Patel has been announced as the interim chair of the Ofsted board.

The chief executive of Star Academies Trust will remain in the position until a successor is found for Dame Christine Ryan, who announced in November she would be stepping down from the role.

Sir Hamid, known to many as Mufti Hamid, has been an Ofsted board member since 2019, and will serve for a period of up to five months.

Dame Christine, who has spent four and a half years as chair of the schools inspection body, will step down at the end of March.

Chief Inspector, Sir Martyn Oliver, said: “On behalf of Ofsted, I’d like to thank Dame Christine for her service during her time as chair.

"She has successfully led the board through a time of significant challenge and change, culminating in our current consultation on the future approach to education inspections.

“I am very pleased Sir Hamid will be supporting us as interim chair, while the government recruits Dame Christine’s successor.

"I look forward to working more closely with him and, in time, with a new chair.”

Sir Hamid was knighted for his outstanding services to education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2021.

The trust runs the award-winning Tauheedul girls and boys’ schools in Blackburn among others.

He has led Star Academies since its inception in 2010, which has now grown to more than 30 primary and secondary schools across the country - in Greater Manchester, London, Lancashire, the West Midlands and West Yorkshire.

It has also established Star Institute - and three of its schools have been designated by the Department for Education as Teaching School Hubs - to train and support new teachers and the continuing professional and personal development of those working in education.

The appointment comes at a time when Ofsted has been under criticism for how it carries out school inspections in England.

The watchdog launched a consultation seeking the views of parents, school staff and childcare professionals on a range of proposals aimed at improving its inspections.

I would assume so. I know there is a Gujarat in Pakistan too, do they have Muslim “Patels” there? I don’t think I heard of any .
I haven’t come across any Pakistani Patels, im sure some must be out there.

Blackburn has a majority Indian Muslim population (huge). They are hard working and resourceful. I know a lot of them, personally and professionally over a few decades. Let just say they dont see India the way Hindus see it. Just my take. They are respectful and law abiding nonetheless. Many Pakistanis feel the same way about their own country atm.

Middle class Indian Muslims do have similar aspirations as middle class Indian Hindus though like focus on education, raising a law abiding family etc. Usually no radical garbage and not fans of Pakistan as they are concerned about being identified as one. This is based on what I have been told form direct sources so apologize if that comes across as generalization.

However seeing the quality of British primary education based on some posts here and then his picture, I have my doubts. Luckily this is not USA so won’t worry much. Let’s hope this guy revolutionizes British schooling for you sake 👍

The Taheedul schools (both boys and girls) are exemplary. Pakistanis and Indians work together and have a great setup and relationship.

Many Pakistani families are focused on education and being law abiding. Of course you or the media wont see that. Not a dig at you. To be honest no Pakistani wants to he identified as an Indian (all the ones in a professional capacity) they are very secure in their Pakistani heritage and at the same time call out the shortcomings some of their community commit.

This Mufti guy will do good.

Looks like a decent man. Let’s not a judge a book by the cover.

Because he has a beard this thread was made?

If i were an Indian, I wouldnt be talking about peoples outlook, especially knowing who Indias leader was
