Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf were named in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year as the global cricketing body revealed its selection

Men’s ODI Team of the Year:

1. Saim Ayub (Pak)

2. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afg)

3. Pathum Nissanka (SL)

4. Kusal Mendis (SL) (wk)

5. Charith Asalanka (SL) (c)

6. Sherfane Rutherford (WI)

7. Azmatullah Omarzai (Afg)

8. Wanindu Hasaranga (SL)

9. Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pak)

10. Haris Rauf (Pak)

11. AM Ghazanfar (Afg)

Asia dominates the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year. Pakistan youngster Saim Ayub follows his nomination for the ICC Emerging Men’s Player of the Year with an opening spot in the ODI XI. The 22-year-old amassed 515 runs in his nine outings, and notably striking centuries against Zimbabwe, and two against South Africa.

Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz joins him as opener, with three centuries of his own among 531 runs during the year.

Charith Asalanka is nominated captain and he forms the middle order alongside teammates Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. The trio ended the year as the top three highest ODI run-scorers for the year with Kusal topping the charts with 742 runs in a consistent year of competition.

All-rounders Sherfane Rutherford and Azmatullah Omarzai feature on the shortlist for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year, and earn their spot in the Team of the Year thanks to stellar contributions with bat and ball. Rutherford averaged over 106 with 425 runs during the year, while Azmatullah’s 417 runs was backed up by 17 wickets.

AM Ghazanfar began the year with impressive performances for Afghanistan in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa. An impressive entrance into senior cricket has seen the 18-year-old take 21 wickets in ODIs and earn a spot as a spin option alongside leading wicket-taker for the year, Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga (26 wickets).

Pace comes in the form of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, who took 15 and 13 wickets respectively during the year and starred as Pakistan recorded landmark wins against Australia and South Africa at the latter end of the year.

What kind of team is that? No Indians & Aussies and 3 Pakistanis? Jay Shah is full on appeasement mode.

NZ, India , Australia and England didn't play much odi cricket last year .

We just played 3 ODI and So was NZ .

:kp

ODIs hardly happened in 2024. India played 3 ODIs on those designer spin tracks. That's pretty much it. Lot more T20s in comparison. And also tests.

Bad year for ODI's then. Non of the other major nations played the format.

The end is nigh for ODI's.

just India had a winless year in odi in 2024. And they talk themselves as a dominating team.

This team has nothing to do with actual ranking of the side. India is still the no.1 side (16 months in a row), Australia no.2 side. It is just that big teams didn't play enough ODIs

Among this list

Pakistan world no.3
Srilanka world no.6
Afghanistan world no.8
Windies world no.10

did india win any odis in 2024?

Did India drop in their ranking?
Why are rankings relevant for odi's and t20? Babar is ranked no 1? No one believes he's ranked no 1 in odi and you guys make fun of him yet here you are hypocritically talking about this stand point?

ODI cricket is so enjoyable and entertaining for true fans. It's testing and great to see how players navigate through 50 overs. It's a shame that top teams like India only played 3 matches in the whole year? This is an abomination to cricket and I fear for the direction we're headed as a format.

India had world T20 preparations also back to back 11 tests schedule.

But despite the World Cup wrapping up in June, you were playing 5 match and 4 match t20 series with Zimbabwe and South Africa later, making no room for ODI cricket even though the CT was the next tournament up. Even 2-3 ODIs in each of those tours would have made a better look. Just 3 ODI games in a whole year is saddening

The thing is T20 team is a completely different team. ODI team has the same players as Test players. That is why India plays a lot more T20.

That doesn't change the fact that they completely disregarded the one day format in 2024.

Exactly what Pakistan favourites in Dubai. India could not win a single ODI for an entire year
Unfortunately the stats show Pakistan peaked too early. India can only go up from such a poor 2024 so will likely win the match in Dubai.

Stats also show 3-2 to PAK in Champions Trophy.

Also, 19-9 to Pakistan in UAE conditions.

No chance for India.

Feel for Saim. After alot of struggle he had finally arrived in international cricket. The opening match of the CT is his home ground. The whole tournament infact would have been a fantastic opportunity to show the world what he was capable of.

He will have many opportunities to show his incredible talent but not sure how many ICC tournaments he will get infront of his home crowd.
