LAHORE: For the first time in history, the FIFA World Cup trophy is coming to Pakistan.

The fans in Pakistan will get a chance opportunity to have a look at the glittering World Cup trophy at home as it arrives in the country on February 3rd for just one day.

A source said, “The trophy, after arriving in Lahore, will be taken to two or three different venues of the city,” said a source privy to the matter.

The event has been organized by FIFA and its sponsor and the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) will not have any role regarding the tour.

It is pertinent to mention that FIFA had suspended Pakistan Football Federation last year.

An official said, “We want to revive football in Pakistan and this trophy tour is a step in the right direction to drive interest among football fans in Pakistan”.

Pakistanis are getting about as close to the World Cup trophy as England will.

Nah. Quite hopeful this year. Think England can reach the quarters. Should make it to round of 16 (expect to lose to Belgium). In the round of 16, it will be either Poland or Colombia. Colombia might be tricky, but Poland should be a win.

Quarters would be an achievement given how they have fared in WC and EU championships in the last decade.

About time the Trophy visits the place where the footballs are made for its tournaments

No PFF involvement in World Cup Trophy coming to Pakistan: FIFA

KARACHI: World’s football governing body FIFA on Monday put to rest all claims of embattled Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) president Faisal Saleh Hayat regarding the FIFA World Cup Trophy coming to Pakistan.

On the day FIFA banned the PFF for “third party interference” in October last year, Hayat had claimed that his “diplomatic efforts” were bringing the World Cup trophy to the country and that it was in serious doubt because of the suspension.

The claims haven’t died down and have continued even after FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour sponsors Coca Cola announced earlier this month that the iconic piece of footballing history was indeed coming to Pakistan on February 3.

The trophy will be on display for the public in Lahore and comes at a time when the game has almost come to a point of stagnation in Pakistan.

All that came after a controversial election of the PFF in 2015. The dispute over the election saw the Lahore High Court (LHC) intervene and subsequently saw FIFA ban the country since the court had appointed an administrator to oversee PFF affairs till a resolution is found.

FIFA clarified that there was no involvement of the PFF in Lahore being one of over 50 stops as the World Cup Trophy makes its way to the World Cup in Russia in June.

“As stated in the FIFA Statutes, in case of suspension, a member association is not able to exercise its membership rights,” A FIFA spokesperson told Dawn on Monday. “As the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola (FWCTT) is organised and implemented by them, the stop in Pakistan would not constitute a membership right of the PFF.”

The spokesperson added that the trophy’s appearance in Pakistan would bring the World Cup closer to football fans in the country.

“FIFA regards the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour (FWCTT) as an excellent initiative as it gives fans around the world a unique opportunity to get up close to the same trophy that will be presented to the winning country of the tournament in July, thus bringing the FIFA World Cup closer to them.”

EXCITEMENT BUILDING UP

There is growing excitement amongst the country’s footballers and the general public as they await the trophy’s arrival.

“Obviously it’s an exciting time for all football lovers,” Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) striker Murtuza Hussain, who saw his hopes becoming a Pakistan international hit by the PFF crisis, told Dawn.

“It’s every player’s dream to play at the World Cup but I hope seeing the trophy come to Pakistan will galvanise the nation and hopefully serious work and investment is done to develop the game in the country.”

Pakistan haven’t played an international match since March 2015 and they are currently ranked an appalling 201st in the FIFA rankings.

Pakistan international midfielder Saddam Hussain hopes the trophy’s arrival marks a turning point for the game in the country.

“It’s a great moment for the nation that FIFA is bringing the trophy to the country,” Saddam told Dawn.

Currently playing in Northern Cyprus, Saddam said he was sad at missing out on the momentous occasion but added: “I’d be even more glad if this improves the situation of football in Pakistan.”

The World Cup Trophy Tour is the first step the FIFA sponsors are taking as part of developing football in the Pakistan. A grassroots tournament is also in the offing.

That’s what Pakistan international goalkeeper Saqib Hanif said would be a huge service to the game in the country.

“The World Cup coming here wouldn’t really matter if it doesn’t bring with it winds of change,” he told Dawn. “What follows this will be key.”

Imagine the amount of money he would have made in these 15 years with zero checks and balances.

wait, why isn't some pakistani football player not accompanying it?

How many iconic Pakistani footballers are out there?

true

but this is something where the relevant people need to be shown upfront.

Footballers dont get fame in Pakistan because of lack media attention. ANd when the media finally decides to give them attention with this trophy showing, they ignore the football players and invite the cricketers.

Who is the captain of Pakistan football? What about that Kaleemullah guy? They should be the ones with the trophy, so that rest of Pakistan could recognize their face.

I would really get annoyed if our lame film actors were accompanying the trophy instead of the cricketers during a cricket event. Infact, my blood boils when i see hamid mir even doing shows on cricket.

Only the relevant stakehodlers should be there.

You definitely have a point.. They could have sent Kaleemullah or Muhammad Essa (who was popular at one point when he used to play).... frankly speaking majority of Pakistanis won't even know the Fifa trophy is in Pakistan. Football hasn't picked up as a sport in Pakistan despite there being substantial interest for it.

The sport trend depends area wise here in Rawalpindi/islamabad

In DHA, Bahria side of Rawal Pindi, most people are football fans. I remember back in o/a levels at roots, most people were football fans, there were very few cricket fans.

Most of the cricket fans in Pindi belong to the mohallahs or those who are quite street smart.

At Uni in islamabad i have noticed that everyone is a football fan here aswell.

THe support trend has changed, but i have never understood why as a sport we haven't developed any players.

Younis looking Fresh. Could act in tv serials if he tries.

The iconic FIFA World Cup trophy on Saturday went on display in Lahore after arriving in Pakistan for the first time in a chartered plane from Bangkok, Thailand.

France's World Cup-winning former footballer Christian Karembeu accompanied the trophy on the Pakistan leg of its World Tour.

"Assalam-o-Alaikum!" Karembeu, who played for France and Real Madrid in a glittering playing career greeted the gathered audience with. "I am extremely happy to be here in Lahore. Pakistan also has football-loving folks.

"It is a great honour for Pakistan that the FIFA trophy is here for the first time.

"We can make our future better through football."

Cricket legend Younis Khan, national men's football team captain Kaleemullah Khan and women's football team skipper Hajra and several showbiz personalities were also present at the trophy's unveiling ceremony in Lahore.

"For me, football is one of the most popular sports in the world," said Younis. "It is a really big deal that the FIFA trophy is here."

An ecstatic Kaleemullah said: "I had never even imagined that the FIFA trophy would come to Pakistan. It is encouraging for footballers to have the FIFA trophy come to Pakistan. I feel that one day Pakistan would also do well in football."

The trophy will be returned back to Bangkok tonight at 12pm.
