West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite has moved into the top 20 of the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen for the first time after playing a stellar role in his team’s five-wicket win over Pakistan in the third and final Test in Sharjah that ended on Thursday.

Brathwaite, who became the first opener to remain unbeaten in both innings of a Test match with scores of 142 and 60, has gained 13 places to reach a career-best 19th rank while helping the West Indies pull one back in the series that Pakistan won 2-1.

Pakistan, which was top-ranked till India overtook it last month, has lost two points in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings despite the series win because it went in with a 44-point lead over the West Indies and the rankings are weighted to reflect this difference. But Pakistan remains in second position with 109 points, six points behind India and only one point ahead of Australia. The West Indies has gained two points to reach 69 points and remains in eighth position.

Brathwaite was not the only West Indies batsman to gain in the rankings led by Australia captain Steve Smith as wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich has gained 27 slots to reach a career-best 58th position. He scored 47 and 60 not out and figured in an unbroken stand of 87 with Brathwaite to see the team through to a target of 153 in Sharjah.

For Pakistan, which has four batsmen in the top-20 – Younus Khan (fifth), captain Misbah-ul-Haq (10th), opener Azhar Ali (12th) and Asad Shafiq (17th), Sami Aslam moved up two positions to a career-best 60th position after scores of 74 and 17 in Sharjah.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer has moved up 24 places to a career-best 86th rank after scores of 102 not out and 43 in the first Test of a two-match home series against Sri Lanka which ended in Harare on Wednesday with a 225 runs victory for the visiting side.

Hamilton Masakadza too has gained one place to reach 42nd position after scores of 33 and 20, while for Sri Lanka, Dimuth Karunaratne has moved up 10 places to reach 41st rank and Kaushal Silva has moved up one place to 40th position. Karunaratne made 56 and 110 in Harare while Silva had scores of 94 and seven.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers led by India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz has gained four places to reach a career-best 24th rank. The left-arm pace bowler took seven wickets in Sharjah, including a haul of five for 88 in the first innings.

For the West Indies, leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo has gained seven places to reach a career-best 29th rank after taking seven wickets in the match while captain Jason Holder’s haul of five for 30 in the second innings has helped him move up 12 positions to 47th rank.

Sri Lanka captain Rangana Herath has retained his fourth position in the rankings with six wickets in the match, while for Zimbabwe, Carl Mumba has moved up one position to 76th rank.

Pak batsmen continue to do well in Test rankings which is a relief!

This is how you mess up a player.

Kraigg Brathwaite was called up to ODI format which is totally unsuited to him, he loses form and confidence and gets dropped.

Now he's been playing with hard hands away from his body to deliveries he should be leaving outside off with poor footwork in this series, looking a shadow of the player he was in Sharjah.

Good wicket to get from Pakistan but really need to get on with the other batters. Fact is that he could have singlehandedly taken the game away from us

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Been brilliant today. He's played the ball late, got his head in line with the ball and crouching less than he was at Edgbaston. Keep going Kraigg !

Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope reach career-best Test rankings

Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope have attained career-best positions in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings after their splendid performances in Leeds helped the Windies complete a series-levelling win against England.

The Barbados pair, which orchestrated a 322-run chase for an unforgettable five-wicket victory, gained massively in the latest rankings that also takes into account the opening Test in Dhaka which saw Bangladesh pull off a 20-run win over Australia on Wednesday.

Opener Brathwaite has risen 14 slots to 16thposition after his innings of 134 and 95 in the second Test of the three-match series while Hope’s knocks of 147 and 118 not out, the first pair of centuries in any first-class game at Headingley, have helped him secure a massive gain of 60 places to reach 42nd position.

Windies captain Jason Holder has gained in both batting (up four places to 57th) and bowling (up two places to 37th) rankings while pace bowler Shannon Gabriel has gained two slots to reach 18th position after taking six wickets in the match.

For England, Ben Stokes’s first-innings century has seen him move up two positions to 23rdplace among batsmen while Chris Woakes has gained 10 slots to reach 74th position.

Resuming his innings on Day 4, Warner went on to score his 19th century. His 112 off 135 balls was the highest score for Australia before he was castled by Shakib Al Hasan.

Meanwhile, Australia opener David Warner has returned to the top 10 after a valiant century. Warner’s partnership of 130 for the third wicket with captain Steve Smith could not prevent Bangladesh from scoring its first ever Test win over Australia, but the left-hander had the satisfaction of moving up five slots to sixth position after scores of eight and 112.

For Bangladesh, opener Tamim Iqbal’s two innings of 71 and 78 have lifted him six places to a career-best 14th position, while star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has moved up three slots to a career-best 14th position among bowlers after his match haul of 10 for 153 at Mirpur.

His fellow spinners Mehedi Hasan (up three places to 30th) and Taijul Islam (up four places to 32nd) have also moved up after finishing the match with five and four wickets, respectively.

Shakib has also consolidated his position at the top of the list of all-rounders with his highest aggregate of 489 points, having also scored 84 and five runs in his two innings.

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club have today added Kraigg Brathwaite to their ranks for the final two Specsavers County Championship fixtures of the 2017 season.

Solid player, Really grinds it out and puts up a prize over his wicket.

WI needs to ensure he stays as test specialist.

Had a feeling he would get a county deal. Will certainly improve him further as a player

West Indies made the lowest Test score after 40 overs in the 21st century today vs Zimbabwe partly thanks to Kraigg Brathwaite's 32 off 160 balls.

Talk about grinding.

What an infuriating player. Seems to have one good series followed by one where he goes missing which is not what you want from a senior batsman with the talent he possesses.

Performed against New Zealand last year, failed against Sri Lanka, scored two hundreds against a weak Bangladesh Test team, does nothing against India.

Been the 500th wicket for Anderson and Broad!

What a performance.

Broken the record for the most balls faced by any West Indies batter in a Test match.

Kraigg Brathwaite batted for 673 balls in the 2nd Test versus England in Bridgetown.

That's the most number of balls faced by any West Indies batter in a Test match.

It's also the joint 13th highest number of balls faced by any batter in Test history.

Most minutes batted in a Test match:

Hanif Mohammad (970+) Pakistan v West Indies in 1958
Stephen Fleming (956) New Zealand v Sri Lanka in 2003
Kraigg Brathwaite (955) West Indies v England) in 2022

A truly remarkable effort by him. But still can't say my opinion on him has changed. He's a mediocre batter who has the ability to produce outstanding knocks from time to time. His performance against England at Headingly in 2017 was in my opinion even more remarkable because West Indies chased down 322 against a high-quality England bowling attack to win that match.

But ultimately he simply lacks the consistency to be talked about in the same breath as guys like Warner, Karunaratne, Elgar, Rohit, Latham. And regularly goes missing even when West Indies are playing at home.

Let's hope this epic performance allows him to finally go to the next level as a test batter and start delivering more consistently for West Indies.

He is the best Test batsman West Indies have currently.

He can occupy the crease and play a long innings.

His record is not an accurate reflection of his ability. He has some issues converting starts but he can bat all day. Mentally very strong.

Steely determination from the West Indies captain in 3rd Test against England

It's his 30th Test fifty in 92 Test matches.

Once a childhood dream to play for the West Indies, captain Kraigg Brathwaite, as he flips the toss on Saturday, November 30, 2024, becomes the first West Indian to play 86 consecutive Test matches, eclipsing the record of 85 held by his countryman and living national hero of Barbados, Sir Garfield Sobers.

The significance of this achievement is magnified by the fact that it takes place on Barbados’ Independence Day, a fitting moment to celebrate the island's contributions to West Indies cricket.

For Brathwaite, surpassing Sobers—a name synonymous with excellence in cricket—feels surreal. Sobers inspired generations, and now Brathwaite carries that legacy forward.
