What's new

[PICTURES/VIDEO] Dean Jones announced as new Head Coach for Karachi Kings [Post#103]

Couple of PSL teams interested in Jones, but he's also had interest from outside of the PSL.

Do you thing PCB will persist with him for 3 years if we keep failing like that or he will get an extension regardless results due to his massive supports from former desi legends.

It is not going to be easy. Mani and Wasim have gone out of their way to come up with the super coach (coach + selector) concept, and if they decided to sack Misbah, they will either have to backtrack on this concept and revert to the old model or find a new candidate to replace Misbah. Considering the failed experiment with Misbah, not many credible names are going to apply.

They are in a tough spot right now and they deserve for it for the nonsensical decision of making Misbah the super coach with zero prior experience as a coach or a selector.

Dean Jones done dirty by IU here. Hope he goes on to sign with another PSL franchise. Wish he was Pakistan coach as well:(

Completely agree with this. I try to think how they can come out of it best. Misbah is the kind of person that will never resign from a post, it was so hard to remove him from the captaincy.

The only way I see is we continue to loose everything (and that's not unlickely) and they say that Misbah has too much work to do so he will remain the chief selector but we will help him with a main coach.

Dean Jones did a exceptional job for Islamabad.

Very poor choice to disrupt a successful regime.

Than he will continue select old budddies preferably more TTFs to destroy the main coach's any cahance to be succeed.

There’s no consistency in what this PCB administration is doing. Good things were expected of them but so far they’ve done the opposite of whatever they’ve said.

Came down hard on Mickey Arthur being national coach AND KK coach then approved Misbah for national head coach-selector and IU coach. Handed Sarfraz a category A central contract, then decided to give him the boot from all formats a month later. Handed out central contracts without a head coach-selector in place. Made a big deal of the UAE Australia tour as a way to test bench strength for the World Cup, and then left out both Rizwan and Abid Ali from the squad.

These guys are just as erratic, unpredictable and unprofessional as anyone at the PCB helm has ever been. They’re just dressed better and make their excuses via professional-sounding press releases. They choose to appear powerless when it suits them, but take executive decisions when they want to but really shouldn’t.

How greedy can one man be?
Misbah wanted a gauranteed 3 year contract with the pcb and got it that too at a quarter of a million dollars a year.

Now he also wants to coach in the psl..

How on earth this is isnt a conflict of interest case is beyond me. He is a new coach, and he should be focusing all his efforts on the national team.

Dean jones got the short end of the stick here.

This is absolutly ridiculous. How can we say we want to move on from corruption when we still have moves like this being made in front of our eyes.

Imran is failing us big time.

Precisely. In the developed world all of this would have been blocked or at the very least been declared unlawful by now.

Imran Khan has to take responsibility for this. He started this chain of incompetence and corruption in Pakistan cricket.

First he appointed an ageing Mani who is clearly too old and out of his depth to be the Chairman of PCB. He then appoints Wasim Khan who although has made big promises has been a major let down.

Once the duo joined forces they decide to let Mickey go prior to finding a suitable replacement. By then it it is too late because the calibre of the applicants are so substandard, they resort to giving Misbah dual responsibilities as Head Coach and Chief Selector.

I never thought for a second we would find a PCB that was actually worse than the one we saw with Ijaz Butt in charge.

its all rolling down hill from here, unless imran takes immediate action. wasim khan was all talk, he couldn't walk the walk when it came down to do business.

ive never seen someone who has actually worked in a professional environment regress so quickly.
hes just there for the paycheck like the rest of the pcb employees

we didn't hear of one case where pcb employees who are incompetent getting fired.

He has done nothing besides go on joy rides and give false statements.

pcb is rifled with corruption yet not one person has been fired. not one. ridiculous.

All the promises of a professional organisation with checks and balances in place then we have these shenanigans

Absolute atrocious and a huge conflict of interest for someone who not only is head coach but also a chief selector

Wasim Khan and Eshan Mani have been a major let down.

They have let this happen, no professionalism at all so far. Imran Khan need to sack both of these two clowns. We need a tough leader to take PCB forward, these two jokers meekly agreed to all demands of Misbah

This situation is similar to what's happening in SL. They keep sacking coaches over there.

IK cannot sack none of Mani, Wasim or Misbah because according to new law PM doesn't have any power over PCB.

These two have been a major disappointment. There has been no change in PCB workforce at all and it has been more than a year. Is Waseem and Mani conceding that PCB was in excellent condition before them coming in? Most of the appointments have been diabolical and devoid of any logic.

I can list out so many points of lack of professionalism shown by the PCB

There is no announcement on Misbah taking over. Until then these are just rumours.

Where is Mickey gone then?

Fired from the PSL. Don't think any franchise will be interested in him.

Good on Deano. He deserved better than the Ehsan Faramosh Islamabad United and Misbah ul Haq

Good news!
Will support them now, with Babar, Amir and Deano!

Just hope they change their batting line up a little because guys like Joe Denly, Bopara etc aren't good enough!

Not sure if KK will be able to retain Imad, Amir and Babar as all 3 are in Platinum now and if they want to select a foreign Platinum player they will have to release atleast one.

It would be better if its either Babar or Imad as that way Babar will probably be able to captain either KK or some other team which will be beneficial for his growth as captain.

Was pretty sure Dean Jones will remain in PSL and I am glad he is still part of PSL. He not only has passion for the game but a good understanding of team combination, tactics and strategies as well which cant be said about many coaches around.

Thank God

Serial failure Mickey removed

I think Babar will be captain whatever team he plays for and Karachi wouldn't let him go. Quetta will stay with Sarfraz, Malik just led his team to CPL finals and the longest winning streak or something so I don't see him leaving Multan. LQ and IU remain.

You think Imad might be fine being demoted considering he's playing under the national captain? Keep in good graces for another couple of world cups haha.

Not a big Bopara fan generally. But he's had an amazing year finisher for Essex and helped them win the T20 blast.

If Babar and Imad both remain in KK there is a high chance Imad will be retained as captain but, you never know.

IU and LQ are both looking for leaders to be honest unless Hafeez is already finalized as LQ captain internally. While Malik lead Guyana Warriors really well in CPL but his stint with MS havent been too fruitful till now.

I dont think Imad would want to be demoted considering he is in high demand in the T20 format. Imad is a pretty decent captain so he should lead a side in PSL too.

I get that. And Imad would be captain if this was a few other places. But in Pakistan, the national T20 captain just another player?!?! That's sacrilege. Our head coach/selector is allowed the IU gig after a huge conflict of interest fuss, just so he can work on his skills and learn on the job :misbah

But it will be an interesting dynamic for sure. Waiting to see how it turns out.

Lahore should fire Aaqib Javed and appoint Mickey Arthur.

Great news for Karachi. Dean Jones was a very successful coach for ISLU and seemed like a good tactician, was also well connected with his players and knew how to get the best out of them.

Dean Jones quotes

"We saw a couple of kids [who impressed], you never know if there is a diamond in the rough"

"We put them through their paces, we wanted to see how the bowlers bowl defensive balls, yorkers, wide-yorkers, change-ups and put them under some pressure"

"We saw some good kids, couple of good batsmen as well, so we will see what happens in the draft, we got a bit of an idea now"

"I am stoked to be part of Karachi, they have the biggest fanbase in all of the PSL, I am looking forward to seeing a lot of blue in the stands, and InshAllah we will pick a real aggressive team that will come out and the fans will be proud of them, and InshAllah we will be in the playoffs"

Karachi Kings making good decisions, only took 4 years.
Deano knows the PSL inside out, expect a top 3 finish atleast.

Pakistan great Wasim Akram cannot understand why Dean Jones has not been offered an international coaching role and has declared the former Australian star should be strongly considered to take charge of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League next season.

Akram recently appointed Jones, 58, to coach the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, a tournament Jones has won twice while leading Islamabad United.

The former Australian Test and one-day international batsman, inducted into Cricket Australia's Hall of Fame last year, has also had success in the T10 tournaments but has not been able to secure a coaching role in the Big Bash League.

Akram said he was "very" surprised Jones, also a columnist with The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, did not have a position of prominence in Australian cricket.

"He is much involved in this present form of T20. That's why I hired him again for Karachi, because the way he is involved – he knows his stats, the game, and a coach like him is so important," Akram said on Monday.

"You don't want a coach who is chilled, laid back. You want a coach like Deano – involved, knowing his players. He is already organising practice matches, the net sessions and everything in Pakistan. He is on it. I am surprised – how come he is not coaching an international level? That is beyond me. Probably politics, but I don't know."

The PSL5 season resumes next month, with the charismatic Jones – who revolutionised one-day cricket in the 1980s with his running between the wickets – primed to have more success.

Rookie Renegades coach Michael Klinger is on a one-year deal and was under immense pressure after his side lost its opening nine matches, but the Renegades have rebounded with successive wins, including a stunning fightback against Brisbane on Sunday night when the Heat had reached 0-84 only to lose their final 10 wickets for a record 36 runs.

Regardless, the defending champions – who host the Hobart Hurricanes at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday – will miss the finals and are likely to finish second last or at the foot of the ladder.

"One of the Melbourne teams is not doing very well. So he [Jones] should be the one next year they [Renegades] should be thinking of," Akram said.

Jones, former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody and former South Australian coach Darren Berry had applied for the Renegades role last year, while former England coach Trevor Bayliss had also been linked to it after Andrew McDonald had to step down on the eve of the season because he had joined the Australian set-up.

Cricket Victoria is likely to conduct a review of the Renegades' season once the campaign is done.

Jones has previously applied to coach India and Pakistan but was unsuccessful.

Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce, having claimed 4-15, was instrumental in toppling the Heat and wants his team to finish the tournament strongly.

"I said last week we were all feeling for our fans and all the boys are busting their backsides. So, hopefully, it kick starts us a bit and we can cause havoc towards the back end of the tournament," Boyce said.

Dean Jones on his appointment as Head coach for Karachi Kings

“We have a good squad and I am looking forward to working with Babar Azam, Imad Wasim, and Mohammad Amir who particularly needs to remind everyone and himself what a good T20 player he is, especially with the T20 World Cup coming up in Australia later this year. And not just for Amir but for some of the other guys, the PSL is an important opportunity to get their names into the list of 15 players for the Pakistan T20 World Cup squad. Of course, it’s not just the Pakistan players but cricketers from other countries who will also be looking at this tournament to better their chances of making it into their respective World Cup squads. So, it’s also important that we give all players a good opportunity to shine so they get picked for their country for the T20 World Cup this year.”

“I was a little disappointed initially, especially given the role I played in building up the franchise, but then I decided that it was in my best interest to move on. Then, all of a sudden and out of nowhere, I got a call from Salman Iqbal and Wasim Akram asking me to come on board at Karachi Kings – an offer I accepted gladly. They obviously liked what they saw with what I had done with Islamabad United and I was happy that I was given that opportunity. Looking back at my achievements, though, I am very proud of my previous role with Islamabad and especially the fact that some of the players that I worked with have gone on to become integral parts of the Pakistan side.”
