Afghan-SL Test should be a good one.

I don't think they have faced each other in Test format before.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board's National Selection Committee has finalized the Afghanistan National Team's Squad for the one-off test match against Sri Lanka that is scheduled to be played from February 2-6 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground in Colombo.

Rashid Khan continues to recover from the back surgery and is set to miss the one-off test match. Meanwhile, the leg-spinning bowling all-rounder Qais Ahmad has been included in the squad as his replacement. In addition, Noor Ali Zadran has been selected based on his recent promising performances in domestic competitions.

Naveed Zadran, a right-arm quick, and Mohammad Ishaq, a wicket-keeper batter, have earned maiden call-ups to the Senior Test Team. Both have put on some impressive performances during last year’s Ahmad Shah Abdali First Class and the recently held Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional List A Tournament, as well as during AfghanAbdalyan’s Tour of Oman in October last year.

ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf is excited about the team’s first test match against Sri Lanka. “It’s quite pleasing to be playing our first test against Sri Lanka, who have a rich history of playing test-match cricket. The year 2024 is packed with test cricket for us, as we will be playing several test matches during the year. Same as our white-ball lineups, we are committed to strengthening our red-ball cricket and building a formidable test side as well.”

Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil, the newly appointed interim Chief Selector: “The team underwent a two-week preparation camp in Nangarhar followed by a 10-day conditioning camp in Abu Dhabi, which featured all the support staff to work with the players and ensure full preparation for the series. We have thoroughly monitored the camps and have picked the squad which includes several new faces who have excelled well during the recent domestic events.”

Afghanistan Squad for the one-off test against Sri Lanka:

Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Rahmat Shah (VC), Ikram Alikhail (WK), Mohammad Ishaq (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Noor Ali Zadran, Abdul Malik, Baheer Shah, Nasir Jamal, Qais Ahmad, Zahir Khan, Zia Ur Rehman Akbar, Yamin Ahmadzai, Nijat Masoud, Mohammad Saleem Safi and Naveed Zadran.

This will be Afghanistan's 8th overall test match and its first against Sri Lanka. The one-off test match against Sri Lanka will be followed by 6 more test matches this year, including a two-test home series against Bangladesh and a one-off home test against New Zealand. Afghanistan has previously won three test matches each against Ireland (2019), Bangladesh (2019), and Zimbabwe (2021).

All of a sudden from 57/1 to 166/5, Rehmat shah was holding the innings together but his departure started the collapse for afghans.

Afghanistan would have liked this score of they were 2 or 3 down. Lost few more wickets in this session than what they would have expected to.

It is not. You don't need to prove anything.

Unfortunately, you can’t pick and choose which international team to support. If I had a choice, Pakistan would be the last team that I would support because I dislike everything about Pakistan cricket.

Lets stick to cricket.

Your team isn't improving in test cricket when they are doing fine in odi's and t20's. This score on that flat pitch is well under par.

SL vs AFG, Test: Sri Lanka openers take command against Afghanistan on Day 1

Sri Lanka openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka put on 80 quick runs in the first day’s final session to unnerve Afghanistan in their one-off Test Friday.

The rapid partnership between Karunaratne (42) and Madushka (36) in the last 14 overs of the day left Sri Lanka trailing by 118 but the tourist wicketless.

It reached stumps in Colombo with a 5.71 run rate, vindicating new captain Dhananjaya de Silva’s pledge to pursue an aggressive strategy.

Afghanistan was all out for 198 after tea with left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando taking four wickets and three apiece from spinner Prabath Jayasuriya and medium paceman Asitha Fernando.

The tourist was 109-2 after mainstay Rahmat Shah steadied it after a shaky start but Sri Lanka’s bowlers began to make inroads after lunch. Vishwa found sideways deliveries to trouble the Afghans, who lost their last six wickets for 43 runs -- Asitha clearing the final two in three deliveries.

“We have got off to a good start,” Vishwa told reporters, “We need to bat for two days and get a big lead and then we have the spinners to bowl them out in the second innings.”

Rahmat, Afghanistan’s most experienced player who has featured in all their previous seven Tests, top-scored with an aggressive 91 that featured 13 boundaries.

A terrific one-handed catch from Sadeera Samarawickrama sent Rahmat back after a failed paddle sweep on a ball pitched on off-stump by Jayasuriya.

Vishwa took a good return catch to dismiss opening batsman Noor Ali Zadran for 31, breaking his 57-run stand for the second wicket with Rahmat.

“The wicket wasn’t favouring seamers as much as we thought it would,” Vishwa said, “We told ourselves that we will just bowl good lines and wait till the batsmen make the mistake.”

Noor was making his debut at the unusual age of 35. Nisha Madushka at gully took a low catch to dismiss Ikram Alikhil for 21. Opener Ibrahim Zadran fell for a duck in the day’s second ball.

The match, which is not part of the World Test Championship (WTC), will be followed by three ODIs in Kandy and three T20 matches in Dambulla.

Sri Lanka has a full tour slate for the year including a three-Test series in England. De Silva was appointed Sri Lanka’s captain last month and is aiming to lift the team’s Test rankings after it slipped to eighth last week.

After getting bundled out for 198 in the first innings, Afghanistan is in a tough spot at the moment as Sri Lanka is 166/3 and they are going at good run-rate as well. This in not going well for afghans at all/

Lunch break now. Sri Lanka would love this scorecard. They are dominating this game so far.

177/3 in 37 - would like Lankans to go hard on this docile deck & get to 400 in the residual 67 overs & declare . No sense in batting beyond 200 lead . Wrap it up on Sunday !

Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan, Only Test, Day 2:

Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews put on a record 232-run fourth-wicket partnership on Saturday to leave Sri Lanka in firm control on Day 2 of their one-off Test against Afghanistan in Colombo. Sri Lanka were leading by 212 runs with four wickets in hand at Stumps, with Mathews sent back on the final ball for 141 and Sadeera Samarawickrama (21) still at the crease. Chandimal (107) also notched up a century in a partnership that broke a record at the Sinhalese Sports Club that had stood for 32 years.

SL are looking good for a big innings win.

Afghanistan were missing Rashid Khan.

Lunch break on day 3. Afghanistan is heading towards a defeat here? Maybe an inning defeat.

Not many runs scored in this session but they would take it. No wicket thrown away, much needed so they can survive the Inning defeat.

66 overs & 179/ 1 wicket - whenever Angelo plays , strange things happen . AFG look like getting to 375+ .

AFG vs SL: Ibrahim Zadran hits maiden century to help Afghanistan reduce first innings deficit to 42 against Sri Lanka

Ibrahim Zadran made a maiden Test century and was involved in two crucial partnerships to take Afghanistan to 199-1 and reduce a big first innings deficit to 42 runs at stumps on the third day of the only Test against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Zadran opened the innings with Noor Ali Zadran with Afghanistan tailing Sri Lanka by 241 runs in the first innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Playing is his sixth Test, he finished day three on 101 not out including 11 boundaries having spent nearly six hours at the crease, facing 217 deliveries.

Noor Ali was dismissed for 47 trapped lbw after adding 106 runs for the first wicket with Ibrahim, the highest opening partnership for the young Test-playing nation.

Zadran added another unbeaten 93 runs for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah who was batting on 46.

Fast bowler Asitha Fernando returned 1-35 for Sri Lanka.

Earlier, Afghan fast bowler Naveed Zadran picked up four wickets to help his side dismiss Sri Lanka for 439 runs in its first innings in reply to Afghanistan’s first innings score of 198 all out.

Sri Lanka resumed the day on 410-6 with Sadeera Samarawickrama batting on 21. Chamika Gunasekara, playing his first Test, joined him at the crease after Sri Lanka’s top scorer Angelo Mathews (141) was out on the last delivery of the second day.

Samarawickrama (27) was dismissed with just 17 runs added Sunday when he was caught by Shah off Naveed Zadran.

Naveed Zadran bowled tailender Prabath Jayasuriya (2) with an inswinger and seamer Nijat Masood ended the innings bowling out Fernando (0).

Gunasekara (16), who was struck on the helmet by a Zadran bouncer, had retired hurt after facing a few more deliveries and did not return to bat.

Kasun Rajitha was used as the third seamer, a concussion substitute for Gunasekara, when Sri Lanka came out to bowl.

Naveed Zadran retuned 4-83 on his Test debut.

Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal formed the backbone of Sri Lanka’s first innings having shared 232 runs for the fourth wicket on Saturday.

Chandimal made 107, his 15th Test century and Mathews recorded his 16th. Dimuth Karunaratne added 77 runs.

This is the first Test match between the two countries since Afghanistan became a Test playing nation in 2018.

Sri Lanka's Test debutant Chamika Gunasekara was subbed out for Kasun Rajitha after he copped a blow to the head in Colombo against Afghanistan.

A bouncer from Naveed Zadran hit Sri Lanka's debutant Chamika Gunasekara on the head early on day three of the only Test against Afghanistan in Colombo.

ESPNCricinfo reported that Gunasekara was taken to hospital for further assessment after leaving the field.

The incident occurred late in Sri Lanka's innings with Gunasekara batting on 16. The No.8 batter tried to duck underneath the bouncer, but the low bounce saw him hit flush on the helmet.

A concussion check was done immediately which Gunasekara passed but a couple of overs later he was seen evidently struggling, holding onto his head, and walked off.

He was subsequently replaced and Kasun Rajitha came in as the concussion substitute.

Sri Lanka made a huge first innings lead in the Colombo Test after centuries from Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal.

But Afghanistan made a strong comeback on day three with the bat with Ibrahim Zadran, Noor Ali Zadran and Rahmat Shah shining.

Afghanistan name ODI squad for Sri Lanka series

Afghanistan have named a 15-member squad with four reserve players for the ODI leg of the Sri Lanka tour.

Afghanistan named a strong squad for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka that follows the Test matches.

Rashid Khan misses out yet again from the squad as he continues to recover from the back surgery done late last year.

Qais Ahmed takes his place as the wrist spinner in the squad. Mohammad Saleem Safi, meanwhile, has been ruled out of the ODIs with a hamstring injury, which will also prevent his further participation in the ongoing Test match, where he made his debut in red-ball cricket.

Naveed Zadran, who made his Test debut in the ongoing game in Colombo, has been included in the ODI squad to face Sri Lanka.

The series begins from February 9 with all three matches to be played in Pallekele.

Lets stick to cricket.

Your team isn't improving in test cricket when they are doing fine in odi's and t20's. This score on that flat pitch is well under par.
Afghanistan is not my team but I enjoy watching them play. They have come such a long way in such a short period of time.

First it was said that they can only play T20Is, now it is said that they can only play white ball.

Soon enough, they will become a competitive Test team as well especially in Asian conditions.

I know you and others like you hate them especially after the way they why humiliated Pakistan at the World Cup on Indian soil (which added to the humiliation), but you don’t have to be so bitter.

Afghanistan have a lot more talent and heart than established cricket nations like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and they have a really good chance of establishing themselves as the second best Asian team across formats within the next 10 years.

Also, if I am not wrong, this is only their 8th Test match as a cricket nation. What do you expect from them after 8 Test matches?

Afghanistan 296 all out with a lead of 55 runs. Sri Lanka just need 56 runs to win the first test.

Sri lanka has won the match by 10 wickets against Afghanistan in the first Test between the two sides.

Sri Lanka won the one-off Test match against Afghanistan by 10 wickets with a day to spare, with its opening batters chasing down an easy target of 56 in Colombo Monday.

Afghanistan was bowled out for 296 in its second innings, setting Sri Lanka the small target, with Dimuth Karunaratne (32 not out) and Nishan Madushka (22 not out) finishing the job within 7.2 overs.

Afghanistan was playing catch-up after conceding 241 runs in the first innings, but fought back well in its second dig, Ibrahim Zadran leading the way with a maiden Test hundred.

Rahmat Shah backed up the opening batter with a half-century but once the pair were dismissed, Afghanistan folded quickly.

Prabath Jayasuriya finished with his seventh five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

They had added 108 runs for the second wicket, and Afghanistan was looking good to stretch the game to the final day when they resumed the innings on day four at 199 for one.

However, six wickets fell in the morning session for just 52 runs as the second new ball hurt the Afghans.

Seamer Kasun Rajitha dismissed overnight batsman Rahmat for 54 and then left-arm spinner Jayasuriya ran through the middle order as the new ball offered him bounce and turn.

Jayasuriya used his arm ball -- which goes straight on -- to good effect, foxing batsmen who were playing for turn.

Ibrahim Zadran, who had batted for more than six hours for his hundred, was confused by one such delivery, and was bowled through the gate.

Jayasuriya finished with five for 107, while seamers Asitha Fernando and Kasun Rajitha shared five wickets between them.

Jayasuriya, the man of the match, ended the game with eight wickets, having accounted for three wickets in the first innings.

Despite the loss, Afghanistan’s fast bowlers were impressive, with Naveed Zadran picking up four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings on his debut.

Hundreds by former captains Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal helped Sri Lanka to their 1st innings total of 439.

The pair were involved in a record 232-run stand for the fourth wicket, the highest partnership at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club for that wicket.

The Test match is not part of the World Test Championship.

The teams will now move to Kandy for a three-match ODI series, followed by three T20 Internationals in Dambulla.

Sri Lanka drop former captain from ODI squad for Afghanistan series

Sri Lanka announced their 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.

Former Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka has been left out of the ODI squad for the Afghanistan series.

Apart from Shanaka, Sri Lanka have made two more changes to the squad that played against Zimbabwe, with Nuwanidu Fernando and Jeffrey Vandersay missing out. Chamika Karunaratne and Shevon Daniel have been drafted in in their place.

Following the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, in which Sri Lanka secured the 9th position out of 10 teams, Shanaka was relieved from captaincy duties. He played only two matches at the showpiece event after which he was ruled out of the tournament due to a thigh injury.

In Shanaka's absence, Kusal Mendis took over and was eventually named the full-time ODI captain.

Shanaka did retain his place in the squad against Zimbabwe but was dropped for the final game.

The former Sri Lanka skipper has endured a rough patch lately in ODI cricket, with the 32-year-old scoring only 353 runs at an average of 17.65 in 26 matches since the start of 2023.

Mendis will continue to lead the Sri Lankan side, which will be boosted by the recent return of the spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana.

Sri Lanka squad:

Kusal Mendis (c), Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Sahan Arachchige, Shevon Daniel, Janith Liyanage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Akila Dananjaya, Wanindu Hasaranga.

The three-match series will be played between 9 and 14 February with all the games taking place in Pallekele.

After the ODI series, the two teams will play three T20Is, beginning 17 February.

Sri Lanka name T20I squad for Afghanistan series

Wanindu Hasaranga will lead a strong 16-member squad in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, which begins later this week.

Sri Lanka will be without injured seamer Dushmantha Chameera for the three T20Is against Afghanistan with Binura Fernando named as his replacement.

Chameera had walked off midway through the first ODI against Afghanistan and as a result missed the second ODI of the series. The quadriceps injury, unrelated to his previous ones, will see him miss the T20Is as well.

The squad retains all players from the series against Zimbabwe last month. Angelo Mathews, who made a return to the T20I squad after three years to win the Player of the Series against Zimbabwe, continues to be a part of the setup.

Hasaranga will lead the side with Charith Asalanka serving as deputy. The squad has plenty of all-rounders including Dhananjaya de Silva, Mathews, former skipper Dasun Shanaka, Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis.

Hasaranga will lead the spin attack that also has Maheesh Theekshana and Akila Dananjaya.

Pathum Nissanka, fresh off making the highest score for Sri Lanka in ODIs, is joined by the likes of Kusal Mendis, Asalanka, Mathews and Sadeera Samarawickrama in the batting group.

The series begins on 17 February in Dambulla with subsequent games at the same venue on 19 and 21 February.

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s Regular T20I captain, continues to recover from the back surgery and has not been drafted into the squad. Ibrahim Zadran, who led Afghanistan in the previous two T20I series in UAE and India, is set to lead the team against Sri Lanka as well.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman also misses out on the squad after sustaining a sprain in his right phalanx (hand) before the start of the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Wafadar Momand has been recalled to the squad to face Sri Lanka, as his replacement.

Chief Selector Mr. Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil has an eye on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. “We have a close sight on the upcoming T20 World Cup for which we want to prepare a very good mix of players consisting of both juniors and seniors. "We have consistently aimed to provide our young players with the exposure they deserve, a commitment we have maintained successfully so far. Sri Lanka have won the 3rd ODI comprehensively by 7 wickets and 88 balls remaining. In the process, they have also accomplished a 3-0 whitewash of Afghanistan.

While the first ODI was a bit of a closely contested game Afghanistan did not put much of a fight in the second game. The visitors though cannot win the series but have pride to play for and a chance to finish the series on a high.

Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by 4 runs.

Matheesha Pathirana and Binura Fernando bowled brilliant death overs for Sri Lanka to beat Afghanistan by four runs in a Twenty20 on Saturday.

Captain Ibrahim Zadran batted Afghanistan to the brink of its first win of the tour but they could score only nine runs in the last two overs when 14 were needed.

Pathirana bowled the 19th over and took two wickets and allowed only three runs. He was named man of the match.

Fernando, who conceded 38 runs in his previous three overs, bowled the last over and started with four dot balls against Zadran, who refused singles to not expose No. 11 batter Fazalhaq Farooqi. That left Afghanistan to score 11 off the last two balls and Zadran scored two and finished with a meaningless eighth boundary.

Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan 2nd T20I

Afghanistan won the toss and opt to Bowl

Sri Lanka bowled out Afghanistan for 115 to win their Twenty20 by 72 runs and clinch the series on Monday.

Angelo Mathews starred with a brisk unbeaten 42 then both opening wickets.

Sri Lanka was made to bat first and scored 187-6. Sadeera Samarawickrama top-scored with 52 off 42 deliveries.

Afghanistan was 31-5 after the first 27 deliveries, and all out in 17 overs.

The Aghans have one last chance to win a match on tour in the third and last T20 on Wednesday. They have lost the one-off test and all three one-day internationals.

Mathews opened the bowling for Sri Lanka and dismissed Hazratullah Zazai for 1 and Afghanistan captain Ibrahim Zadran on 10 to take 2-9 in two overs.

All six Sri Lanka bowlers took a wicket.

Captain Wanindu Hasaranga, with 2-19 in his four overs, became the second quickest bowler to 100 wickets in T20s. He took 63 matches, 10 more than Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who was not on this tour because of an injury.
