Halo: Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen tests device at Barcelona

Kimi Raikkonen drove with it for two laps on Thursday, at the final pre-season test in Barcelona.

The design is a prototype based on one agreed by all the teams and F1's governing body after years of research.

However, it is not necessarily the definitive design that will be used next year as further testing still needs to be carried out.

The device is being introduced to protect drivers from flying debris following a series of deaths and injuries across motorsport.

It has the support of the F1 drivers, although a small minority say they would prefer to leave cockpits completely open.

The 'halo' emerged as the best solution after various devices were tested.

Observers expressed concerns the design would affect visibility, but top-level sources have told BBC Sport that this is not the case.

The driver's eye-line is below the main body of the structure, while the central support strut at the front effectively disappears from view because of a human's binocular vision.

However, there is some concern that it might impede the view of the starting lights in certain circumstances.

According to Ferrari, Raikkonen, world champion in 2007, said the visibility was "OK" following Thursday's run-out.

Red Bull are proposing a different solution, what one source described as a "half canopy", although one senior insider told BBC Sport that the design "doesn't look very promising".

Team boss Christian Horner has told motorsport.com that they plan to run it on a show car next month.

Surprised I didn't even know about this section on PP. F1 has surpassed Cricket as my fave sport. Any Kimi fans out here?

Out of the two Merc drivers am rooting for Rosberg - although will be great if vettel wins his 5th WDC - albeit highly unlikely

never ever under estimate the ICEMAN

i'm in the anything but hamilton camp - so would welcome the iceman winning it - one of the most naturally gifted drivers of modern times.

I am very pleased for Vestappen - this guy is special - lets just hope that he keeps his ego in check....unlike some special cases... ;)

haha i'm with you on anything but Hamilton. but yeah Kimi isn't the electric qualifier he once was...I think the Red Bull junior program is one that has given F1 a lot of good in the last few years. Both Ricciardo and Verstappen are class...so is Carlos Sainz I believe. Hoping Mclaren can get competitive soon so we have 3 to 4 teams fighting for the win.

Feel sorry for Dan - and looking forward to understanding what happened to Nico's car - not a good day for those two. Hamilton is one lucky lucky guy.

That was Dan's race - Hamilton was very very lucky indeed - capitalizing on the misfortunes of others, a compliant no2 in a diseased car + numerous VSCs that allowed him to drive home without another pitstop.

Anyone see FP1 at Baku today? Circuit looks alright but I have a feeling the safety car is going to have a busy Sunday.

Hungarian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton crashes as Nico Rosberg ends quickest

Lewis Hamilton crashed early in second practice as team-mate Nico Rosberg underlined Mercedes' pace at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton lost control at Turn 11 and slid into the barriers on his fourth lap. He limped back to the pits but could not run again, ending up fifth.

Rosberg was 0.595secs quicker than Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo in second.

Ferrari were struggling, with Sebastian Vettel 0.327secs back, 0.322secs ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was sixth fastest, more than 1.6secs off the pace.

Raikkonen was less than 0.3secs quicker than the McLarens of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button - separated by only 0.059secs in seventh and eighth places.

And Ferrari lacked race pace, too, with Raikkonen doing a long run on heavy fuel at the same time as Rosberg and lapping on average about a second slower.

Mercedes were just as dominant on the race runs, Rosberg well over half a second on average quicker than the next quickest man, Verstappen.

Hamilton's mistake - he lost the rear on entry to one of the most demanding corners on a difficult track - will have cost him track time and experience of the car on full tanks, but that is unlikely to be too much of a hindrance on a track he knows well and is one of his favourites.

He was 0.237secs quicker than Rosberg in the first session and heads into the weekend a point adrift of his team-mate in the championship.

Hamilton has set himself the target of going into the summer break after next weekend's German Grand Prix with a lead, something he has not had yet in 2016 after a difficult start to the season that saw him 43 points behind Rosberg after the first four races.

Renault's Jolyon Palmer was 19th fastest, 0.181secs and two places behind team-mate Kevin Magnussen.

Driver reaction

Lewis Hamilton: "They have those new white kerbs. I just put my rear wheel just over the white line and touched it and they are very slippery. I don't know why they have put them there - it was perfectly fine before.

"Nico had really good runs, so I can study that. Pace was feeling quite good. It is just about getting in the swing of things, if you miss a session that's what you miss."

Nico Rosberg: "An impressive day for us, performance-wise. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean we'll be in quite such a strong position tomorrow - but for now it's very positive.

"I'm feeling great out there and the car is very quick, so a good start to the weekend overall. Obviously, it's a great feeling to start the day like that with the contract being sorted. That was always going to be a positive boost."

Should be an interesting last couple of races.

Rosberg undoubtedly maintains the upper hand, but Hamilton has clawed back admirably in the last two weeks and definitely has the momentum going into these final races.

can someone please put that kid Verstappen in the wall already? 2 seasons and he thinks he knows more about driving then all other drivers combined. This is what happen when daddy buys you a seat at a top team.

Hamilton top after second practice in Brazil. If he can win the Brazil GP this title race will go down to the wire. :ravi

Rosberg will definitely be eager to seal it in Brazil. Last thing he wants is to give Lewis a sniff right at the death, as anything can happen when it gets that close.

If it rains in Brazil for qualifying or the race, Hamilton will have an advantage.

Rosberg has struggled in wet conditions with this years car as he works the tyres less than Hamilton who's aggressive with them.

If it does rain, it will likely be a Hamilton win or podium, with both Red Bull drivers joining him.

Add to that Rosberg is down on engine power unlike Hamilton who used his grid penalty in Spa to change the parts on all of his remaining engines.

Regardless of the eventual outcome, it's been an incredible title battle between these two. :mv

As expected, Hamilton dominates in the rainy conditions to win in Brazil.

It's been a resilient fight from Lewis, however, Rosberg's consistency sees him remain the favourite, as he all he needs is a third-place finish in Abu Dhabi to take the title.

Lewis Hamilton is already an all time great and the greatest British F1 Driver in history, deserves a lot more notoriety at home but doesn't get it

Hope Hamilton clinches the title somehow in the last race, great driver.

This race was all about Verstappen. What a talent. He showed the whole world how good he is.

No one in the F1 world talks about the 2 Mercedes drivers ATM.

His talent goes beyond the effectiveness of an F1 car, has finished on the podium two or three times having started at positions as low as 20th; brilliant brilliant driver and an all time great. If he remains motivated he can equal Michael Schumacher's record if not surpass it

We also need to give credit to the engineers, designers and aerodynamicsts at the Mercedes team; they are absolutely fantastic. Mercedes regularly recruit from my uni, it's not easy to work for them and the process is incredibly intense.

Agree on that. He's the Kevin Pietersen of racing, at the moment. Controversial but capable of some unbelievably brilliant racing.

It's not about the records, it's the impact you leave on the sport. :srt :ik

Damn how could I forget athletics. Conor is definitely an ATG but I have Silva above him given how he helped take MMA to the main-stream during the 2000's and shaped the juggernaut which is the UFC today. I mean even if you go back to when you were younger, Silva may have been a name you were familiar with when MMA was ever discussed casually.

Ronda I have her up there because she has taken female combat sport to a level it has never been before, you'd never think that two women would be the star attractions on landmark PPV's like UFC 200 and help draw buys in excess of a million. Her sucess has also bought attention to other female combat sports as well and people have begun to pay more attention to martial arts in the Olympics given how Rousey star began when she won a bronze medal in Judo.

I don't really follow MMA so I don't know who Silva is.

Yes Rousey is very popular in terms of mainstream media.

Raikkonen has outqualified Vettel 11-10. Who would have thought of that after considering his qualifying form since his return in 2012.

Just hope Ferrari have a good challenger for 2017. However, it's looking likely to either be a Mercedes walkover again, or maybe a chance of Mercedes vs Red Bull.

Hope Rosberg wins this race and takes the title, he really should have won in 2014 except he was a little raw and didn't take his chances.
