Another excellent post by one of our very learned posters; Congratulations Markhor

Robert Mugabe's cronies in the ZCB have destroyed a once-successful sporting team. Zimbabwe were no mugs in the 1990s and had tough players that could battle with the best. The massive wastage of ICC funds due to corruption is the biggest crime and ZCB director Ozias Bvute is one of the guilty men.

For example, in 2012 a $6m loan from the ICC was intended to retire a portion of ZC's high-interest debt. Instead deposited in a non-interest-bearing account with MetBank. Who is one of the directors of MetBank ? None other than Ozias Bvute ! With people like that at the top, no wonder Zimbabwe are in the state they're in.

I'll give you another example - the sad story of Harare Sports Club's floodlights. Pylons were built years ago but the lights have not gone up because ZCB cannot afford the cost of getting them installed. So for years those lights have sat at the airport for customs fees to be paid so they could be put up !

The pay of players at international and domestic cricketers is meagre and that's if the players get paid on time - infact recently a Logan Cup (Zim's FC competition) match had to be abandoned as the players were on strike over non-payment of salaries. The domestic competition itself is low on quality and talent.

The better cricketers like Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis would rather ply their trade overseas now. The only light at the end of the tunnel is when old man Mugabe hits the deck. Mugabe meanwhile has announced he's standing for the 2018 elections at the ripe age of 92 !

Slight correction. Based on the sources I've seen (Zimbabwe posters on the ground in ZIM), the top national team players earn upwards of $100,000 US per annum. The 12-15 senior players on central contracts do OK financially. Its the domestic players that don't get anything at all. That and the fact that talent drain and constant embezzlement of ICC funds means the ZC can't invest any of the money on development. 5 years from now when Masakadza, Williams, Cremer, and Ervine will have retired...Zimbabwe will be competing with likes of Uganda, Bermuda, and Malaysia in World Cricket League Division 2.
