Prithvi Shaw asked to lose weight before making comeback to Indian team: Report

Indian opener Prithvi Shaw was left out of the squad in India's Test side for the World Test Championship finals and the tour of England, despite bouncing back to form after great knocks in the domestic season and the Indian Premier League.

However, Shaw was reportedly asked to shed some weight in order to be considered for selection in Team India. Shaw was dropped from the Indian team after a poor show in the Test series against Australia and got replaced by Shubman Gill, who played defining knocks.

According to a report in the Times of India, the batsman has been told by the BCCI to 'shed a few kilos' if he is to make his way back to the national team.

“Prithvi is still very slow across the turf for a 21-year-old. He needs to shed a few more kilos. He also had concentration issues while fielding in Australia. Shaw has been working hard since he returned from Australia. He has the example of Rishabh Pant right in front of him. If Pant can turn things around in a few months, Prithvi too can do it,” the BCCI source said.

Pant's career took a turn for the best after the Indian wicketkeeper shed few kilos. He outstood as the wicketkeeper and a batsman for Team India by playing a crucial role in breaching the Fortress of Gabba and England series.

“He has to sustain this form for a few more tournaments. He has often been picked on the basis of one good series and then he has struggled in international cricket, He is too good a player to be ignored for long,” the source explained.

Team India will hope to turn into the debut World Test Championship victors when they take on New Zealand one month from now. From that point forward, Virat Kohli's men will direct their concentration toward the marquee England series and desire to charge better compared to what they did last time; Team India lost 1-4 in the 2018 series.

Prithvi Shaw's Cryptic Post After Not Being Picked For India's Tours Of New Zealand And Bangladesh

Prithvi Shaw missed out from the squads as BCCI chief selector Chetan Sharma announced a total of four squads for India's upcoming tours of New Zealand and Bangladesh. India will play three T20Is against New Zealand starting November 18, before playing three ODIs against the same side. They then tour Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series and a two-Test series. When asked at a virtual press conference about the decision of not selecting Shaw, India's chief selector Chetan Sharma said that they are keeping a constant eye on the player and that he would get his chance in future. However, Shaw's posted a cryptic note on Instagram Story minutes after the squads were announced.

"Hope you are watching everything Sai Baba," wrote Shaw on his Instagram story.

When questioned about Shaw missing out, Chetan Sharma said that it is important for the selection committee to give chances to the players who are already there in the team set-up and performing well. However, he reiterated that Shaw will "definitely get his chance".

"We are basically looking for Prithvi (Shaw). We are in constant touch with Prithvi. He is doing well. There is nothing wrong with him at all. The thing is that we have to see whether the guys who are already playing and performing are getting their chances. He will definitely get his chance the away he is batting. Selectors are in constant touch with Prithvi. Whenever we are there in matches, we are talking to him, and he will get his chances very soon," said the chief selector of the Indian cricket team.

He already made such a post and removed it. Not sure taking veiled potshots at selectors will help him anyway. Let us be practical.

He looked like a baby upto a certain point. This guy is being on the watch list since he was very young. So it is kinda shocking how he managed to appear so old in one year. Also he doesn't care about his fitness.

Prithvi Shaw recorded the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy on Wednesday when he made 379 for Mumbai against Assam.

Shaw was nearing 400 when he was trapped leg before by Riyan Parag.

B.B. Nimbalkar holds the record for the highest score in India’s First-Class competition. He was the first to make 400 in an innings, during the 1948-49 season, for Maharashtra against Kathiawar.

Shaw gathered 49 fours and four sixes during his 383-ball stay at the crease. He also had a 401-run partnership with captain Ajinkya Rahane for the third wicket.

Earlier in the innings, Shaw became only the eighth Mumbai batter to score a triple hundred. He beat the previous best by a Mumbai batter - 377 by Sanjay Manjrekar in the 1990-91 season.

Shaw also became the first player to score a triple hundred in Ranji Trophy, a double hundred in Vijay Hazare Trophy and a hundred in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

'Have Been Judged By People Who...': Prithvi Shaw Gets Emotional After Scoring Record 379 In Ranji Trophy

A few months ago, Prithvi Shaw had posted a message on his Instagram handle: "Hope you are watching everything Sai Baba". It was a young man desperately seeking some divine intervention after being pushed to a corner. He was being judged by people who didn't even know him and those fair weather friends weren't around when he needed them most. "I think that post was just about if he (Sai Baba) is watching or not. That wasn't for anyone. It was a deeply personal thing," Prithvi's voice was unusually calm as he spoke to PTI after his marathon 379 off 383 balls in a Ranji Trophy match against Assam in Guwahati.

In the close to nine decades of Indian first-class cricket history, Shaw has the second highest individual score after Bhausaheb Nimbalkar's 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in Pune back in 1948-49.

Call it Indian cricket's voluminous supply of talent or his pure bad luck, Prithvi has scored runs across formats and in terms of sheer talent, he should have been in the team. But perceptions in Indian cricket fly thick and fast which can make or break careers.

"Sometimes, you do get frustrated," said the U-19 World Cup winning India captain.

"You know you are doing your things right. You know you are doing your processes right, you are honest with your self, disciplined with your career on and off the field. But sometimes people do talk differently. People who don't even know you judge you," the hurt was palpable in his voice.

Success makes one wiser but rough times tend to make you mature a tad faster. It has happened with the 23-year-old, who now knows and can identify who all are his well wishers.

"People who are not with me when I am not doing well, I don't really care about them. Just like to ignore them. That's the best policy," said the second man after Sachin Tendulkar to hit a Test hundred in his teens.

The trolls on social media or the adverse comments don't bother him anymore.

"I use social media but all my posts are done by my manager, he handles my stories and posts. I dont really see what's going on. I try and shut myself from all this stuff and if I am doing things right and my processes right, this kind of day will come again and again."

I will just do my work and not think about India call-up

It is perhaps about time that Prithvi should ideally get a national recall but with Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Abhimanyu Easwaran ahead of him in the Test pecking order, one doesn't know how the door will be unlocked.

"I am not even thinking if someone is going to call me in the Indian team. I am just trying to do my things right which I can and not to think too far ahead. I am a person who loves to live one day at a time. I have to make my today right. I am playing for Mumbai and the goal is to win Ranji Trophy," he said.

He has got thousands of congratulatory messages on all his accounts including some personal ones. It is difficult to choose.

"Lot of people praised and expectations are high. I hope I have made them happy."

Could have made 400, Prithvi laments

A score of 400 doesn't happen everyday in first class cricket. But had he not been adjudged leg before off Riyan Parag's delivery, he might have crossed 400 on the day.

"It feels really nice. I could have made that 400. I think I was batting really well but it was just matter of time as big runs weren't coming. I thought, I should give myself more time out there in the middle, display patience and the track needed that," Prithvi explained.

"The pitch did offer seam movement at the beginning and then as the overs progressed, it started keeping low."

He was indebted to skipper Ajinkya Rahane (191) for his guidance during their 401-run third wicket stand.

"It feels really nice to bat with a player of his (Rahane's) stature. Someone with so much of international experience. His mere presence around this Mumbai side lifts us up. I always try and learn when an international player comes and plays with us," he said.

As far as technical changes are concerned, playing close to the body has been his top priority in order to counter the seam and swing movement.

"Just trying to play close to my body. Red ball in conditions like these seams around. I am that kind of player who loves to keep the scoreboard ticking and at times you have to put your head down and bat according to conditions. These small small things made a huge difference," he signed off.

What's the deal between him and Dravid? The Ind openers are ropey and for all his recklessness, he is better than the others.

Bcci selection panel is really unjust.
This guy should open for us in all three formats.
Atleast pick him for t20s fgs.

They are omitting even international performers. Shaw will be way down the pecking order. SKY would be playing ODIs if he were representing any other side. KL Rahul would have been kicked out.

Right.

Sky, Shaw, Kishan deserve their chances.

Same goes for Kuldeep and Bishnoi, don't know how Chahal manages to retain his place.

An argument over selfies quickly escalated into a fight with a baseball bat and a car chase in Mumbai for cricketer Prithvi Shaw, according to a police complaint.

Eight people have been named in the police case for allegedly charging at Mr Shaw and his friend, breaking the windshield of their car and demanding ₹ 50,000.

Those named in the complaint - two of whom have been identified as Shobhit Thakur and Sana or Sapna Gill - have refuted the charges and accused the 23-year-old cricketer of assaulting them first.

According to the complaint by Mr Shaw's friend, the fight began at a luxury hotel near the Mumbai airport in the early hours of Wednesday after two fans - a man and a woman - approached the cricketer for selfies.

After a few pictures, when they refused to back off and demanded more, Mr Shaw called his friend and the manager of the hotel to have the fans removed.

After being kicked out, the fans waited outside for Prithvi and, along with a few others armed with baseball bats, mobbed Mr Shaw, the complaint said.

When Mr Shaw and his friend drove off, they chased the car, intercepted it at a traffic signal near Oshiwara and broke the windshield, it added.

They also demanded ₹ 50,000, threatening to file a fake police case, according to Mr Shaw's friend.

The allegations, however, have been challenged by those named in the case.

Speaking to the media, Ali Kashif Khan, the lawyer for Sapna Gill, has alleged that Prithvi Shaw assaulted the woman.

A video filmed by Ms Gill's friend showed her struggling with Mr Shaw, who is clutching a broken baseball bat.

"Sapna has been kept in the Oshiwara police station. She is not being allowed to go even for medical examination," Mr Khan said.

Not sure how culpable he is here, but this guy is a train wreck in slow motion. Sad.

A court here on Friday remanded social media influencer Sapna Gill in police custody till February 20 for allegedly manhandling Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw and attacking his car following a row over clicking of selfies.

The incident had taken place early Wednesday morning outside a luxury hotel in suburban Santacruz following an argument between Shaw and the social media influencer and her male friend after the player refused to click selfies with her.

Gill was arrested on Thursday evening, while cases were also registered against her friend Shobhit Thakur and six others for alleged rioting and extortion.

As per the complaint, Thakur and Gill approached Shaw for a selfie at the hotel. Initially, the cricketer obliged. But they insisted on clicking more selfies, a demand that Shaw turned down. After that, Gill and Thakur allegedly started arguing and misbehaving with him.

He was attacked by fans for refusing to take a second selfie with them. Not his fault. These social media influencers and unruly fans must be put in their place.

A court here on Monday granted bail to social media influencer Sapna Gill and three other accused in a case pertaining to alleged manhandling of India cricketer Prithvi Shaw and attacking his car with a baseball bat in Mumbai last week.
Earlier in the day, the court sent Gill, her friend Shobhit Thakur and two others, Rudra Solanki and Sahil Singh Singh, to 14-day judicial custody. Subsequently, they filed bail applications before the court.

Metropolitan magistrate, Andheri court, C P Kashid, after hearing brief arguments, granted bail to all the accused, who were arrested last week.

Gill, in her application filed through advocate Kaashif Ali Khan, claimed the FIR (first information) against her has been registered on "completely false and bogus allegations".

"The statements in the FIR are fabricated, concocted and without any basis and the applicant (Gill) is being falsely implicated in the above case," the bail plea said.

Police, represented by public prosecutor Atia Sheikh, opposed the bail applications, saying investigation in the case has not been completed yet.

Sheikh argued the accused had chased Shaw to take "revenge" as he refused to pose for a selfie with them.

They could have even "killed" the 23-year-old cricketer, said the prosecutor.

Poor Prithvi, being beaten up Social media attention seekers has to be the last straw

Shaw it seems is bieng made a victim this time. Although one has to say it is the second controversy against his name in a short career so unless he changes his outlook towards life he might take kambli route to self destruction

Shane Watson, assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals on Shaw's poor form:

"The talks with Prithvi has been really just to have the freedom to go out there and trust his skills,"

"Prithvi is as skilled as any batter in India. The biggest thing for him is to just continue allowing himself to access those skills with no fear about making a mistake or getting out."

"Players like Prithvi don't just fall out of trees. Someone with his skill doesn't come along that often, and that's why we just want to help him as much as we possibly can to allow him to show the incredible batting skills he has got."

“That's the real big reinforcement we are giving him as a coaching group because we all know the skill he has got. When he is batting at his best, he can take down the best bowlers in all conditions."

The Airport Police has found no evidence to support the accusation of molestation levelled by a social media influencer against India cricketer Prithvi Shaw in Mumbai.

Sapna Gill had filed a criminal complaint against Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav earlier this year before the magistrate court in Andheri for molesting and assaulting her with a baseball bat.

“There is no evidence to support accusation of molestation for misbehaviour against Shaw and Gill’s allegation is false,” Hindustan Times quoted the report submitted by the police as saying.

It was Shaw who had first filed a complaint against Gill and her friends for assaulting him after the cricketer refused a request for a selfie inside a hotel.

Shaw alleged he was attacked with a baseball bat and the windshield of his car was damaged during the altercation.

Gill was arrested following the complaint but was released on bail. She then filed a complaint against Shaw and Yadav.

Citing statement they have recorded of the hotel staffer where the incident happened, police said Shaw objected to Gill’s friend Shobit Thakur taking a video of the cricketer.

As per the staff, an irked Thakur started abusing Shaw.

“The staffer said that when they were being escorted out, he heard Gill say that ‘dekh ab main uski kya halat karti hoon’ (Now, see what I will do to him). They then left. After half an hour, Shaw and his friends left too. The staffer said that Shaw had not misbehaved with Gill at all on February 15,” police said in the report.

Gill though said her friend approached Shaw a selfie but the cricketer took the phone and thrashed it before they assaulted Thakur.

She then claims to have pleaded with them to stop assaulting her friend following which Shaw touched her inappropriately.

“They saw that the front windshield of Shaw’s car was broken, and they had seen Gill with a baseball bat in her hand,” the police report said.

What happened to Prithvi Shaw? It seemed like when him and Shubman were both coming up, most people rated Shaw as the even better talent?

What happened to Prithvi Shaw? It seemed like when him and Shubman were both coming up, most people rated Shaw as the even better talent?
Prithvi Shaw is India's answer to pakistan's Umar Akmal. Both extremely talented by mired in fitness issues and non-cricketing controversies.

According to various media reports:

Prithvi Shaw may need at least one more month to return to international cricket, but that is subject to overcoming higher volumes of agility drills and acceleration. According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Shaw (24), who has been out of action since August last year due to a knee ligament injury, will be put through a more rigorous workload over the next three weeks to assess if his knee can endure the increased demands. Above, he will also have to play a few games before he is given clearance to take part in competitive cricket.

"In Every IPL, They Expect Me To...": Prithvi Shaw Breaks Silence On Comeback

Prithvi Shaw looked in great form as he scored 43 for Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. The DC opener, who was not picked for the first two matches of this year's competition, played a significant knock as his side registered their first win. It was a big occasion for the youngster who faced a lot of criticism for his form last year. After the match, Prithvi opened up about the expectations that the franchise has from him and how he planned his approach.

"I don't know about this year but in every IPL, they expect me to whack every ball. I don't consider it as pressure, I just try to go out there, take it as a challenge and do my best. It felt good to play white-ball cricket after so long. After coming back from an injury, the hunger is there to score runs, middle the balls. IPL is that kind of a game. If you middle the ball, you know it's your day. Today I was trying to play smartly because we did not get an ideal start, so I was trying to sort it out," Shaw said in video posted by IPL.

He made an impact with the bat on his return & now, he shares how special it is to play for Delhi Capitals

The match between DC and CSK also saw MS Dhoni come out to bat for the first time in IPL 2024 and although his side was not able to clinch the victory, the fans were enthralled to see 'Thala' score 37 runs off 16 runs. Prithvi spoke about admiration for the former Indian cricket team skipper and explained how Dhoni shares his immense experience and insightful advice for improvement with the youngsters.

"No words for him. Whenever he comes on the ground, everyone can hear what he has achieved and what kind of happiness he gives to the people who are seating out there. Whenever I get a chance to meet him or talk to him, he always shares his experience on what he has done throughout and what I need to do to improve. I'm very lucky to be able to play in the presence of him," Shaw added.

His fitness is a major issue. He is also competing with the likes of Gill, Jaiswal, Gaikwad, Kishan for that opener role along with old man Rohit. Very difficult for him to get into the white ball team.
