Barcelona are to sue former player Neymar over his 222m euro (£200m) world record move to Paris St-Germain.

The Brazil international made the move to the French club after they met his buyout clause earlier this summer.

A Barcelona statement said the club were seeking repayment of his 8.5m euros (£7.8m) bonus for the renewal of his contract - on the grounds of breach of contract - plus 10% in interest.

Gotta laugh at Barca. After selling Neymar they thought it was just a question of taking their pick as to who they want as a replacement. Livepool have told them where to go with their attempts to sign Cout. Borussia are also refusing to sell Dembele and have apparently rejected a bid of £119 million. They will probably get Jean Seri of Nice for £36 million:maqsood

Yeah, it never was going to be easy after a big transfer like that.

Opponents start licking their lips and asking for more once they see how much a team has to work with.

Barca are so ..., don't set a release clause if you didn't want to sell him lmao

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar will contest the legal action brought against him by former club Barcelona.

Barcelona want a 8.5m euros (£7.8m) renewal bonus Neymar received for signing a five-year deal - just nine months before his move - returned.

The Brazil international made a record 222m euro (£200m) move to PSG in August after buying out his contract.

"The player's formal defence will be filed in due course," read a statement from the 25-year-old and his lawyers.

Neymar also seemed to suggest Barcelona owe him money following his Nou Camp exit, rather than the other way round.

His statement added: "Regarding the bonuses owed for the execution of the contract of 2016, it is also necessary to inform that the player has already initiated the formal procedures of collection before the competent courts."

On Tuesday, Barcelona had demanded the return of the "already paid" renewal bonus, plus an additional 10% for delayed payment. "The club demands the player return the already paid sum as he has not completed his contract," it said.

"The club also requests Paris St-Germain take on responsibility for the payment of these fees if the player cannot do so himself," the Catalan club added.

Paris St-Germain later responded to say they were "surprised" by Barcelona's statement, adding: "The club repeats that, along with Neymar Jr, it strictly respected all applicable laws and rules and can only regret, once again, the attitude of FC Barcelona."

The lawsuit was submitted on 11 August to the Labour Tribunal in Barcelona.

Following the transfer, Barcelona announced the club was withholding a further 26m euro (£23m) loyalty bonus from the player.

Neymar criticised the directors of his old club on Sunday after scoring twice on his home debut for PSG in a 6-2 win over Toulouse.

"I spent four beautiful years there and parted happy," said the 25-year-old. "But with [the board], no.

"For me, they are not the people who should be there, for the direction of Barca. Barca deserve much better."

PSG's Neymar reports Barcelona to FIFA over unpaid renewal bonus

Neymar has filed a claim to FIFA against Barcelona for an unpaid renewal bonus as the fallout from his world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain continues, world football's governing body has confirmed to ESPN FC.

The Brazil international believes he is entitled to €26 million which Barca were due to pay him this summer as the second part of a bonus for the contract renewal he signed last October.

However, the Catalan club announced after his move to PSG that they would not be paying the rest of the bonus as the requirements of the contract had not been met.

In addition, earlier this week they confirmed that they were also suing Neymar for a breach of contract, claiming back the first part of the renewal bonus as well as €8.5m in damages plus 10 percent in arrears.

Neymar responded by saying he would fight Barcelona's claim for compensation and FIFA has now confirmed he is also seeking payment for the second part of the renewal bonus.

"We can confirm that we received a claim from Neymar against FC Barcelona," FIFA told ESPN FC. "The matter is being investigated. Please understand that at this stage we are not in a position to make any further comment."

The fallout all stems from the five-year deal the 25-year-old signed with Barca in October 2016.

In addition to the bonus he was paid at the time, the amount of which has not yet been made public, he was due to receive €26m more this summer.

But after his €222m transfer to PSG went through, Barca spokesman Josep Vives confirmed the club would not be making the payment because Neymar had not fulfilled his contractual duties.

"There were three conditions -- one, that the player didn't negotiate with another club before July 31; two, that he publicly expressed his decision to fulfil his contract; and three, the payment was to be made on Sept. 1 to ensure he didn't go to another club," Vives said.

"With these criteria not met, the club will not pay the renewal bonus. The money is no longer with a notary but back with the club."

Neymar did not publicly say he was considering a move to PSG until Aug. 3, the day Barcelona terminated his contract and he signed with his new team.

He has since gone on record criticising Barca's board, saying they do not deserve to be there after scoring twice in his home debut for PSG last weekend.

Brazilian football superstar Neymar was cleared of corruption charges on Tuesday related to his transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.

A court in Spain acquitted all nine defendants in the trial.

In addition to Neymar, this included his parents, FC Barcelona and former club presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, Santos FC and former president Odilio Rodrigues Filho, and N&N -- the company founded by Neymar's parents to manage his career.

Brazilian company DIS had argued they lost out financially on Neymar's transfer because they owned 40 percent of Neymar's sporting rights at Santos and believed the true value of the deal had been obscured by those involved.

"According to the court it has not been proved there was a false contract or that DIS was intended to be harmed," said the court in a statement.

Neymar's high-profile trial got underway in mid-October in Barcelona, just a month before the start of the World Cup in Qatar.

The 30-year-old -- who now plays for French champions Paris Saint-Germain -- and Brazil crashed out after a penalty shootout against Croatia in the quarter-finals.

Prosecutors had initially sought a two-year jail term and a 10-million-euro ($10.5 million) fine for Neymar but in a surprise move they dropped corruption and fraud charges against all the accused at the end of October.

Brazilian sports investment firm DIS filed a lawsuit in 2015 alleging it had been defrauded during the player's transfer to Barcelona.

It claimed Neymar, Barcelona and the Brazilian club colluded to mask the true cost of his transfer thereby cheating it of its proper share of the player's transfer.

DIS also argued that it was not informed of the existence of an exclusivity contract in 2011 between Neymar and Barcelona.

But Spanish prosecutors, which initially shared DIS' view, later said the firm's allegations were not based on "evidence".

They concluded the case was a matter for civil rather than criminal justice.

DIS indictment

Even though prosecutors dropped their charges the case continued because the court was also considering a separate indictment filed by DIS as it is allowed by Spanish law.

DIS was seeking to recover 35 million euros it claims it was cheated of.

Barca said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros, with 40 million euros paid to N&N and 17.1 million to Santos, of which 6.8 million was given to DIS.

Spanish prosecutors initially said they believed the actual value was at least 83 million euros.

During the trial Neymar said he didn't remember if he took part in the transfer negotiations, saying he only signed documents presented to him by his father.

All of the other defendants, including former Barcelona presidents Bartomeu and Rosell, denied any wrongdoing.

DIS, which owns a chain of supermarkets in Brazil's Sao Paulo region, initially asked for a five-year prison sentence for Neymar and his father who is also the player's agent.

But at the end of the trial it called for a revised prison sentence of two and a half years for Neymar and four years for Neymar's father, but the defendants were acquitted.

Neymar, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, left for PSG in 2017 for a world-record 222 million euro ($234 million) transfer fee, with the Parisian side activating his release clause.

Barcelona are a deeply corrupt club, these kinds of shady off field stories constantly surround them for a reason.
