Islamabad United's run in the inaugural Pakistan Super League was stuff dreams are made of. After early defeats the Islamabad team was being lauded as also-rans rather than potential champions. Over the hill, lacking flair, lacking ideas and lacking match-winners were the phrases coming out when describing their approach and tactics. However, somehow it clicked, they turned a corner and never looked back once they got their tactics and selection right last year.

Can lightning strike twice and Islamabad make it consecutive PSL wins? Well, their think-tank has opted for the safety-first policy of let's stick with what we have, rather than taking risks and making many changes to a familiar and successful squad. It's a policy that if Islamabad lift the trophy in 2017 could well be described as inspirational but if the team flops, it's a strategy that will be lamented as lacking imagination and creativity.

The batting fireworks at the top of the order will be expected from Sharjeel Khan who in last season's tournament became the first and only century-maker. If Sharjeel gets going, he is more than capable of winning any match on his own. The back-up batsmen to Sharjeel are no mugs with Khalid Latif also capable of some power-hitting. In addition, Shane Watson, Misbah-ul-Haq, Sam Billings and Brad Haddin are no slouches when it comes to the big shots. Islamabad's batting if it clicks can be explosive and can take any match away from the opposition, but if Sharjeel flops then this batting line-up may struggle to reach the big scores they will want and require.

The all-round department looks healthy with seasoned match-winner Shane Watson in all three facets of the game. He remains a more than capable all-rounder and his experience and know-how will help the youngsters. Watson is ably backed up by the highly rated Amad Butt who many believe has the potential to make it to the highest level of the game. Add to this the ever-improving Hussain Talat and Islamabad is spoilt for choice when it comes to pace-bowling all-rounders. However, the reigning champions have suffered a huge blow with Andre Russell's twelve month ban which has left a huge hole for Islamabad to fill and could ultimately mean them struggling to repeat their performances last year. Russell in the twenty-over format is virtually irreplaceable, but Islamabad's decision to replace him with Steven Finn is a curious one.

Islamabad's spinning riches are amongst the best of any PSL team, with the wily and experienced duo of Samuel Badree and Saeed Ajmal more than capable of not only stemming the flow of runs from the opposition, but also taking their fair share of wickets at crucial times. No weak links here.

The pace-bowling of Islamabad could, if one was being critical, be pinpointed as their weak link. Mohammad Sami had a great PSL last time around but he is more than capable of being the total opposite this time around. Mohammad Irfan's fitness is always an issue, with the giant liable to pick up an injury or two. Rumman Raees is a steady pace bowler who has recently won recognition from the national selectors, but one feels that the opposition could target him. Steven Finn is another pace bowler who opposition batsmen could tuck into on the wickets of UAE.

Islamabad's squad has of course a familiar ring to it and when looking at their squad they are more than capable of lifting the trophy again. Their squad has depth, experience, know-how, it has variety and above all it has several match-winners which is very important in this format of the game. However, a repeat of last year's heroics look a distant dream.

Strengths - explosive batting line-up. Good all-rounders and a great spin duo.

Weaknesses - Pace bowlers could struggle - Squad is one year older, therefore will some of the aging legs be able to take a tough schedule?

Verdict - Winning the trophy again this year might just be a step too far for Misbah and co.

Key man: Sharjeel Khan

Players to watch out for: Hussain Talat, Ammad Butt, Sam Billings

No chance especially without Russell. Really loooking forward to watching Sharjeel. He's gonna light it up this year

Last time round Isloo was probably the third best team after Zalmis and Galdiators. However, Sharjeel had a miracle day against the Zalmis in the play-offs and Gladiators imploded in the final.

They won't be lucky twice in two times.

Besides there can only be ONE king :salute

If Sharjeel fires they win, but he cannot fire every day.

Pacers look weak and injury-prone.

Bowling will be heavily reliant on Ajmal and Badree.

Lots depend on Sharjeel, Khalid, Billings and Misbah firing.

If they don't, we lose.

But, we have a good shot at claiming the title.

Without Andre Russel, IU is totally relying on Sharjeel and Watson. Noway I would replace Russel with Finn. It should have been a power pack all rounder. Billings was a disappointment in last PSL and in current india tour as well. Haddin should take on the gloves works instead of Billings who did keeping in majority of the matches in last PSL.

There are stronger teams but ILU is a unit that I back when it comes to tough times. Despite my bias towards the team, I doubt we will win again. :sanga

I don't see IU doing well this time around, apart from Sharjeel and Billings who himself is an unproven quantity in Asia, the batting is very thin as I don't expect Misbah, Haddin and even Watson (out of international cricket for a year now) to perform well either. Bowling wise, there is nothing to write home either, Badree is a good T20 bowler but one on his own is not enough to cover the workload of 5 and the others lack the quality of the West Indian.

Either a group stage or semi final knock out IMO on the cards.

This team has just got worse with the news of russell getting banned.

A high possibility of ending up at the bottom at 5th.

I really hope they get demolished in every single game, for Pakistan's sake.

If you're smart you'll know exactly what I mean.

I disagree.

Islamabad does not revolve around sharjeel khan only. It performs even withour hia performance aswell.

We have got a great blend of players and we dont rely on single players

I fully expect Islamabad to be the team that fails to reach the playoffs.

Too much reliance on Sharjeel - Watson is hit or miss whilst Misbah has no place being in a T20 squad.

Misbah will explode and totally annihilate the opposition in at least one game. So will Sharjeel, maybe twice. I expect Sami to bowl good, just like he did last year. Not that I want him back in Pakistan colors, but he's still a very good Twenty20 bowler. He gives it his all in his 4 overs and bowls around 145-150 KPH consistently. And with Ajmal still chucking the odd delivery, we could find a couple of doosra's getting important wickets.

This will most probably be Haddin's last PSL so I expect him to go all guns blazing. He's always been a terrific bat and playing under Misbah may give him the inspiration to play good and work on his game even for the month. Watson has always been one to fear and his batting will be crucial.

I like Sam Billings as he is an explosive cricketer and with experience of playing on similar pitches in India, he may find form in UAE and score big runs in a couple of innings. Apart from that, the real player who I think may make a major mark is Rumman Raees. Sure, yeah, he's not loved on PP but I like his variations and this is what works these days. I expect him to churn out wickets, especially if wickets are like that of last time.

Islamabad United, despite being the previous winners are being treated like underdogs but I have a lot of hope from the team.

Sami did well last year,Finn is a good addition as well. Also imran Khalid did well last year. Watson will offer something in batting and bowling.

You are under selling Islamabad big time.

lol, against some of our domestic performers people like badree watson and co will be licking their lips..they will be back in their stride after a game or two..just like last time and misbah has some experienced ehads with him too..a shrewd team with some cohesion can do wonders in this format..

Hope Hussain Talat gets a runs for Pakistans sake, we desperate need a hard hitting player who can turn him arm for a couple of overs as well

Well they could prove a few people including myself wrong again.

Misbah's men proving people wrong again. I suspect a lot of Misbah haters will be crying when ISL win PSL again. I can't wait for it.

Like i said before in this thread, this team doesnt revolve around sharjeel only

lol, great performance from us. I suspect zalmi might not have a great PSL this year..early days yet..

'Us'?

You're trying pretty hard to try and lend some loyalty to what is at the end of the day, a T20 league.

Let it go.

One year too far for some of the squad. I don't think it was wise to largely pick the same players again this year.

Off the field they were a shambles, total shambles.

Our dealings with them were an eye-opner - they were way behind the levels of professionalism of the other teams. The owners really need to look at employing professional people, not hangers on only interested in their own agenda and self-promotion.

They require a major overhaul next year. Misbah needs to step aside and perhaps become a mentor.
