Emerging from the rubble of a failed campaign first time around, can a new look Lahore Qalandars side under the stewardship of Brendon McCullum rise above all and claim the PSL 2017 crown?

Heading into the second edition of the Pakistan Super League, the Lahore Qalandars are looking to revitalise their form and performances in order to avoid another early departure from the competition. By far the most substantial move made by Lahore for the second edition of PSL has been to sign Brendon McCullum. This move derives multiple benefits for the Qalandars; an explosive, match-winning batsman, who in his pomp was the best in this format and more critically, McCullum also replaces Azhar Ali as captain. This may be integral for Lahore’s prospects in the tournament, as injection of an attacking brand of Cricket, which McCullum is renowned for, may be the catalyst that Lahore need to orchestrate a successful campaign.

The Lahore Qalandars squad has the capacity to start and finish strongly, with batsmen built for T20s and specialist bowlers such as Sunil Narine and Sohail Tanvir who excel in the format. In order to triumph this time around, the Qalandars are hinging their hopes on their power packed top order and their battery of slow medium and spin bowlers. Brendon McCullum, Umar Akmal, Jason Roy and Fakhar Zaman comprise arguably the best top order in the tournament and will be relied upon heavily to score the bulk of the runs if Lahore are to venture past the group stages. However, the Qalandars lack the dynamic batsmen in the middle and lower order which ornament their top order. James Franklin, Mohammad Rizwan, Grant Elliot and Azhar Ali are all capable players but lack the urgency required in T20 Cricket. This problem area may be solved by Cameron Delport, who was among the runs in the first PSL and he may prove to be the engine driver to power the Qalandars home.

The major reason for the failure first time around was the lack of wicket taking options for Lahore, they did not have a single bowler in the top ten wicket takers in the first PSL (Zafar Gohar being their highest with 7 wickets in 6 matches). To this end, the Qalandars have invested in two experienced T20 veterans – Sunil Narine with his mystery spin and Sohail Tanvir with his befuddling bowling action and slower balls. The form of Tanvir will be particularly key as he will be the main medium pacer as an injury to Dwayne Bravo has resulted in the swashbuckling all-rounder being ruled out of the PSL. The duo of Tanvir and Narine alongside Gohar form a potent triumvirate on slow and low pitches and will be expected to enhance the Lahore bowling greatly along with the exciting talent of Ghulam Mudassar.

Coaching-wise, the local input of Aqib Javed and Mudassar Nazar and the international experience of Paddy Upton is the optimal combination of tactical insight and mental conditioning that the Qalandars need to progress through to the final stages of the PSL. Qalandars was anointed the team name because of the Sufi mystic culture of Lahore, as a juxtaposition, it will be Brendon McCullum imprinting his positive and attacking-oriented culture on the Qalandars which helped New Zealand reach the 2015 World Cup final under his leadership. For the team’s and fans’ sake, the Qalandars will aim to go one step further and lift the coveted trophy.

Key man: Brendon McCullum

Players to watch out for: Jason Roy, Umar Akmal, Sohail Tanvir and Ghulam Mudassar

Best batting unit of the tournament... But they lack when it comes to bowling and I think B.Mac will make sure that his plans will cover their bowling inability...

That's the major difference, a captain like Azhar will lose with any team available..

But a sensible captain can win you games with any team,

I can bet 80% sure that Lahore is going to win this tournament...

Being a Karachiet I'm supporting Karachi 2.0 but surely Qalandars and KK will give each other tough time.

Lahore have one of the strongest batting squad in this year Psl but bowling looks weak still very good squad and i think they will win this year title

I hope Macculum use Usman qadar the way he use his 2 leg spinner in bigbash .This can be qadir career defining tournment

Too many bad players in the team who play for their own not for the team or you may say not suitable for this format.
you may disagree with me but i have a strong voice over their inclusion in this format.
Umar Akmal, Sohail Tanvir, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Rizwan, Azhar Ali

Yamin can be the low order hitter. Tanvir isn't bad for a few overs . They seem to have all basis covered .

No idea how/why they didnt win the last time. One also hopes for less "reactions" from their owner although those alone were a cause of much merriment!

McCullum and Roy are brilliant additions to the top order. Hopefully, Lahore put up a stronger fight this time around.

Azhar Ali in T20? Azhar is one player I wish would stick to Test cricket. He is a big asset in our test team. Don't want to see him get messed up playing T20s.

Easy, Azhar was leading them and now its B McCullum who will turn their fortunes brighter.

With Azhar booted out as Captain, the chances are LQ will do much better than last year but I don't think they will win.

Solid team, did good to pick up some bowlers after they did poorly in that last time. Strong option to win it all

Last time both LQ and KK struggled substantially, both teams had weak characters leading the fray and the teams didn't look completely like full T20 exponents. LQ have certainly transformed their squad and team, with some major investment in getting some top batsmen in and also some veteran bowlers who have an excellent reputation in this format of the game.

It will be interesting how KK stack up against LQ.

Well I did mention some reasons in the OP. The main one being the lack of bowlers who are regular wicket takers in their previous squad, their two highest wicket takers were Zafar Gohar and Ehsan Adil (both 7 wickets but in 6 and 5 matches respectively) but they only just averaged over 1 wicket a game which frankly isn't enough to win matches and progress - you need your main bowlers to take 2-3 wickets per match to have strong prospects. That is what LQ will hoping happens with the introductions of Tanvir, Narine and Mudassar alongside Gohar for this edition.

Also, the change in captaincy from Azhar to BMAC should make a major difference too as it is a change from a leader with a reputation of being not particularly good to someone who during his tenure was regarded as one of the best in the world and someone who encouraged his team to play attacking Cricket.

Hopefully, these two major changes positively influence the LQs to advance through the competition.

I don't see Azhar getting a gig tbh as there are far better top order T20 batsmen than him in the squad and he doesn't have the power game to bat lower down the order either.

He also can't magically transform into a specialist bowler either, so I don't see a place for him in the squad or the XI tbh.

Front runners to win this time.

Only competition will come from PZ and they are going to lose half their team at the knockouts stage.

Also from the previous edition, in the batting only Delport and Umar Akmal performed whereas the rest were poor. However this year the batting order is more relaxed and is expected to thrive under pressure due to several batsmen who can attack and hit aerial shots.

absolutely, BMac especially is a great addition

KK tried to improve their squad too this time so let's how will they perform but one thing is sure Lahore wouldn't be an easier team to beat this time,

Azhar should learn from B.Mac how to use his resources and field placing which Azhar knows nothing about..

Pretty balanced team , BMac's form is crucial to their fortunes.

Qalandars have done a complete revamp. Not just of the playing team, but also back room staff. previously, there was only Ijaz Ahmed, Shaid Aslam and Paddy Upton. But now they have roped in Aqib, Mudasir as well as support staff of Sydney Thunders. Also, they are trying to build club culture through talent hunts and academy. So really hopeful that they will do good.

Will miss Bravo though. I know Roy is probably a better bastman, but Bravo is one of the best death bowlers, so he would have been a big boast to the bowling team which lack experience.

today is lahore qalandars kit launch which they are now showing on their sports media partner channel

The kit is a buri nazar as their performances will light up the tourney and they will be the envy of all other teams.

Seems like a strong team especially with Mac in as the captain. If Tanvir or Narine can find some form, this cup could very well be their.

Strong batting, weak bowling, it's better than last time with a better captain in Bmac but we may still face the same struggles.

My only interest in Lahore is Ghulam Mudassar and Fakhar Zaman. Can they be 145K bowler and 140SR batsman we desperately need?? - My hopes are not that high, that's why I am not too excited about this team...

Too many foreign players, which I don't care about them... Looks like all key positions will be filled by foreigners, local roaster is too thin and full of passengers... Nothing exciting about Lahore

One of Qadir and Mudasir has to play. So chances are high

They have a lot of spin options, but not many pace options. Mudassar is more likely to play, alongside Tanvir and Yamin. Qadir might get a game or two at most.

There's no fun in watching spinners on phattas. Need fast bowlers on fast pitches to bring excitement.

They will mesmerize their opposition by doing worse than they did last time :))

The only good thing about this team is strong top order. The middle and lower order is not dynamic enough. In bowling, only Tanvir and Narine will be a threat.

Replace injured Bilawal Bhatti with Afraz Khoso, Mohammad Zahid, Ehtisham Sultan or Adeel Khan in the Lahore Qalandars squad.

Ehtisham is already with the squad
I believe he is not in the main squad of LQ. He was in the junior squad ie rising stars squad.
I think Bilawal will be out for few weeks due to today's injury. Afraz the lefty malinga could be ideal out of all 4 I mentioned.
