"Quite a few youngsters in the PSL who have potential to become world-class players" : Imran Tahir

With 253 wickets in 141 international appearances for South Africa, Imran Tahir is regarded as one of his countries top spin bowlers. Its perhaps that reputation which lead the newest franchise in the PSL, Multan Sultans to include him in their line-up and the spinner has rewarded his employers by becoming the leading wicket taker in the tournament.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Imran Tahir spoke about his experience of playing in the PSL, working with Wasim Akram and Tom Moody, and what he expects to achieve by playing in the tournament.

mp1Inmj.jpg

PakPassion.net: How has your experience of the Pakistan Super League been so far?

Imran Tahir:
This is the first time I am playing in the Pakistan Super League and I feel that the standard of this tournament is outstanding which is why it is not that easy to perform well in this league due to the quality of competition. Regardless of how tough it maybe to perform in the PSL, my job is to do well for Multan Sultans which is what I am focussed on doing at the moment.

PakPassion.net: Do you feel that the Multan Sultan squad is a balanced one?

Imran Tahir:
I believe we have an excellent and balanced squad. There is just the right balance of senior players and juniors in the squad. Another good point of having such a combination is that the younger players also have a great chance to learn from the more experienced cricketers in the squad. There is a lot of hope in the camp and also a conviction that we will continue to do well with this squad in our first year. Our start in the PSL has been great and we will look to keep on repeating these performances in the future as well.

PakPassion.net: How does it feel to be working with the likes of Wasim Akram and Tom Moody?

Imran Tahir:
It's an absolute pleasure working with such big names of international cricket. When I was a youngster, it was my wish to meet a legend like Wasim Akram. Whilst I have met him before in recent times, to be able to work with him is a dream come true and I am really proud about this. Both Wasim Akram and Tom Moody, apart from having been top-level cricketers are also great to work with. What I really appreciate is the manner in which they have welcomed me to the team as well as the respect that they have shown to me on joining Multan Sultans. It is my hope that I am able to fulfil and answer in kind the faith that both have shown in my skills and deliver for my team during this tournament.

PakPassion.net: How important is the PSL for the development of Pakistan cricket and its cricketers?

Imran Tahir:
A league such as the PSL is crucial for any country and especially for Pakistan as it allows their youngsters an opportunity to improve their skills. They can do this as they get a chance of playing alongside international cricket stars and if they can perform well in the PSL, then the doors for selection for international cricket can also open for them. This is a unique chance for them as this sort of opportunity did not exist before at least in my time in Pakistan. What the PSL provides now is a systematic and proper way for young talent to be judged and then to be given a chance to represent Pakistan.

PakPassion.net: Do you see any room for improvement in the PSL?

Imran Tahir:
I have absolutely no complaints about the quality of arrangement for this tournament. From what I see, this is an excellent tournament with great facilities and grounds which are of a high standard.

PakPassion.net: Do you see Multan Sultans going all the way to the final?

Imran Tahir:
Of course, our team is working towards the goal of winning the competition but then we must also accept that all participating teams consist of excellent and world-class players who all have the ability to take their teams to the top. As a professional, I always believe that one has to give respect to the opposition or else this can cost you dearly so I won't make any bold predictions now. What we need to do is to focus on the matches ahead and continue to win the games. If we win enough games, then we would have earned the right to go all the way to the top and play in the final. The fact is that if we need to be recognised as the top side in this tournament, then we will have to work hard to achieve that goal – there are no two ways about it.

PakPassion.net: What will it be like if you have the opportunity to play the eliminators in Lahore and the final in Karachi?

Imran Tahir:
It would be an amazing feeling if we do qualify and get to play in Pakistan. I still have many friends in Karachi and it will be a great honour to play in front of them and show them what I am capable of which is something I have not been able to do before. I have played in Lahore where I was representing the World XI. That trip was like a dream come true for me. I had always wanted to play in the Gaddafi Stadium in front of all of the cricket-crazy fans and my family and I were overjoyed when that happened. Hopefully, I will get another chance to play in Lahore again as well.

PakPassion.net: Do you see any talented young Pakistan players in the PSL who have the potential to become big names later?

Imran Tahir:
There are quite a few youngsters in the PSL who have the potential to become world-class players later. The PSL is an arena and the perfect place for them to become even better players. When they play against the world’s top-class players, then they will gain a lot of experience. That knowledge, in turn, will probably make the transition to international cricket easier for them at a later time.

PakPassion.net: What do you expect to achieve from participation in Twenty20 leagues around the world?

Imran Tahir:
Twenty20 leagues offer a unique opportunity for any player to showcase their talent and also to learn something new. For example, I am not here for a holiday as Multan Sultans have immense trust in my abilities and I need to demonstrate through my bowling that I am keen and serious about my job. Taking wickets for myself isn’t the aim for me but doing well for my team is very important whichever tournament I am playing in. What I aim to do is to put in my full effort and if I succeed in that, then the team will be happy, and I will sleep well too.

PakPassion.net: What was the reason for South Africa’s recent below par performance in the Limited Overs games during the recent series against India?

Imran Tahir:
There was no simple reason for South Africa’s defeats in the Limited Overs game. The series was an ideal opportunity for our youngsters to make a mark in the international scene as a few of our senior players were injured. For their part, India played really well and won both ODI and T20I series and for that we must appreciate their performances. Simply speaking, they played good cricket and so they deserved to win. Regardless of the result, this was a good chance for us to learn by playing a strong opposition like India and hopefully we have learnt some lessons which we can use for our benefit in the future.

PakPassion.net: Your wicket celebrations have become very famous and much talked-about. What goes on when you take a wicket?

Imran Tahir:
I honestly don't know. I am a very passionate cricketer and when I take a wicket I just let go and I don't really know what happens. I guess it's joy, emotion and sheer relief at taking a wicket. I'm someone who has had to work very hard to get to where I am and had to wait a long time for success, so I savour every moment of my cricket career.

PakPassion.net: Twenty20 hat-tricks, wickets galore and recently showing off your six-pack, you seem to be getting better with age?

Imran Tahir:
I always believe that hard work is the key. My advice to any young cricketer is to never think that they have made it and to always look to improve in terms of technique and fitness. I have had a tough path in cricket and I suggest to all cricketers to enjoy your cricket, but always be professional and honest to what is a great profession.

Some of the question and answers may seem a bit outdated - That's because the interview was done earlier during the tournament while MS were playing well and were in contention.

Really good interview. I know his celebrations really annoy me but he still seems like a decent bloke. Great bowler.

haha thats the Pakistani side of him.

Depends how you define world class, for me its top 3 maybe top 5 players in the world for their position.

Of all the youngsters I think only Shaheen has that potential, but that doesnt we cant have some very good players or Pakistani greats come out of the likes of Talat.

Also I feel for him that he didnt get a chance to play in Lahore again

Durham sign Imran Tahir for Vitality Blast

Durham County Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of South African international Imran Tahir for the 2018 Vitality Blast campaign.

The world class leg-spinner will join the club for first nine Blast fixtures, starting with Durham Jets’ away fixture against Yorkshire Vikings on July 5 and he will be the club’s second overseas signing of the 2018 season.

Tahir is currently ranked as the world’s number seven Twenty20 international bowler and has played over 200 T20 games as a professional, taking 203 wickets.

The 39-year-old has featured in 33 T20 Internationals, 85 ODIs and 20 Test Matches for South Africa and claimed 253 wickets across all three formats.

"I’m really excited to be heading to Durham for the Vitality Blast,” Tahir said.

“I always enjoy playing in England and hope that my previous international and county experience can help make an impact.

“I look forward to joining up with my team mates and the rest of the staff at the Emirates Riverside imminently."

The white-ball specialist has a wealth of experience and featured in this year’s IPL for 2018 winners the Chennai Super Kings.

He also has a strong knowledge of English cricket having played for Derbyshire, Hampshire and Nottinghamshire in recent years.

Durham County Cricket Club Head Coach, Jon Lewis, said: “We wanted to invest in a top-quality player to improve our white ball squad and we feel that Imran demonstrates our ambition to compete in the T20 format.

“We were keen to strengthen our squad with an experienced big-game player, who will also be able to help our talented youngsters and look forward to welcoming him to Emirates Riverside.

“He is one of the best leg spinners in the world and will bring a different dimension to our game.”

2019 ICC Cricket World Cup to be Tahir’s final ODI appearance

Monday, 04 March 2019

Standard Bank Proteas leg-spinner, Imran Tahir, has confirmed the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup will be his final appearance for South Africa in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. Tahir is currently contracted to Cricket South Africa (CSA) until July 31st, and will re-assess his freelance future following the tournament.

The 39-year-old says he would still like to play T20 International cricket for the Proteas ahead of the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup in Australia, but would like to open up more opportunities for other fledging spinners in the country in the 50-over format.

“I have always wanted to play in the World Cup,” he said. “It would be a great achievement for me to play for this great team. I have a mutual understanding with Cricket South Africa and going forward I decided that I would finish at the World Cup, that is why I am contracted until then.

“After that, Cricket South Africa has allowed me to go and play around the world in various leagues but I would also love to play T20 cricket for South Africa. I think I have the ability and can play a role in T20 cricket for South Africa. I am grateful for the opportunity.

“I would love to play for as long as I can,” he admitted. “But there is a stage in your life where you have to make big decisions, this is one of those big decisions, it is definitely the biggest decision of my life. I also feel there are a couple of good spinners in the country who need the opportunity. We are fighting for the same spot, but looking to the future, they will have more opportunities to play for South Africa.”

Tahir was instrumental in the Proteas’ eight-wicket win in the first Momentum ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday, producing a strong return of 3/26 in a match-changing performance. He looked back to his best following a quiet series against Pakistan, and hopes to continue with the form in an important season.

“I felt really good,” he said of his performance on Sunday. “I always want to take wickets in every game that I play and it happened yesterday. I am grateful that I played my role for the team.”

The second ODI takes place at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. Play is scheduled to start at 13h00 local time.

Cape Town - Proteas leg spinner Imran Tahir has finished as the leading wicket taker in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The veteran's 2/23 in the tournament final for the Chennai Super Kings against the Mumbai Indians on Sunday may not have been enough to secure victory, but it was enough to see Tahir edge Proteas team-mate Kagiso Rabada to the top of the wickets charts.

Tahir finished the tournament with 26 wickets from 17 matches at an average of 16.57 and an economy rate 6.69.

Rabada, meanwhile, finished on 25 wickets from 12 matches at an average of 14.72 and an economy rate of 7.82.

Tahir also became the only player in the tournament's history to play in a final at the age of 40.

"Words are not enough to pass my sincere gratitude to all my brothers and sisters," Tahir tweeted after the match.

Tahir has announced that he will retire from ODI cricket at the end of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which starts on May 30, but he has expressed his desire to continue playing franchise and international T20 cricket.

David Warner, meanwhile, finished as the tournament's highest run scorer with 692 at an average of 69.20 and at a strike rate of 143.86.

India's KL Rahul came in second with 593 while South Africa's Quinton de Kock was third with 529.

I dedicate this purple cap to all the true fans who supported me which inspired me to do well in every outing .I can humbly say it’s you who won the purple cap and not me.Words are not enough to pass my sincere gratitude to all my brothers and sisters.Humbled

CSA CONGRATULATES IMRAN TAHIR ON HIS 100TH ODI CAP

Sunday, 02 June 2019

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today congratulated Imran Tahir on the occasion of his 100th One-Day International appearance for the Standard Bank Proteas. He reached this landmark when the Proteas took the field for their second league match at the ICC Men’s World Cup against Bangladesh at the Oval in London.

He becomes the second South African specialist spin bowler to make 100 appearances in this format, following Nicky Boje who made 113 appearances. He also becomes the 24th Protea to make a century of ODI appearances.

“Congratulations to Imran on this outstanding achievement,” commented CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe. “He made his debut for us at the 2011 World Cup, so it is highly appropriate that he should achieve this landmark at another World Cup tournament.

“His performances speak for themselves, including the best bowling figures for the Proteas in an ODI and the fastest to take 100 wickets in this format for us.

“What really stands out for me is the passion he has always displayed in representing his adopted country. He has added tremendously to the rich diversity of our Proteas that has become the hallmark of the unified era.

“He is also a wonderful professional who has embraced a strong work ethic to maintain his fitness and skills at an advanced age. He was recently the leading wicket-taker at the Indian Premier League and he remains our leading strike bowler in white ball cricket. He remains the go-to bowler in crucial moments

“We are grateful for what he has brought to South African cricket over the past decade, not least of all his being a role model to develop the spin bowling culture at all levels of our cricket,” concluded Mr. Moroe.

How did Imran Tahir slip through the net?

Honestly for a good seven or eight years I’ve been wondering this. He would have been such a great servant to Pakistan cricket.

He rejoins Multan Sultans as supplementary player in PSL 5

Imran Tahir speaking to the media:

It's an honour for me to play in front of my family once again.

When you have a brand of your cricket, if it's played in your own country, it's beneficial. It creates jobs, etc. and I give my best wishes for PSL, I hope it will be good for everyone. The overseas players will get to see that Pakistanis are good and welcoming.

As a senior player, it's my duty to help juniors if they ask for help. This is how it is anywhere in the world. We also have Mushtaq bhai and Shahid Afridi, these are legends. I myself keep talking to Mushtaq bhai, asking for tips. So juniors also have the right to learn from us.

I am excited to play here, I have been raised here, playing here is an honour for me. I had a dream to play at Gaddafi Stadium in front of the people so I'm looking forward to it and hope it goes well for me and Multan Sultans.

"Its when you lose is when you find out who your real friends and teammates are" : Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir speaking at presser today (vs Quetta at Multan)

"This is a matter of honour that Multan Sultans are playing here and their supporters are here top support them and I am personally very grateful to them and we are hopeful that we can give good performances in the future also"

About his celebration

"I have been asked many times before about this - This is really a display of my passion; I had always wanted to show my enthusiasm if I ever got a chance to play international cricket."

"This is my style and people like it and for that I am very grateful to them"

"Shane Watson knows my skills and knows how I bowl as we both play for Chennai (IPL); It was a great challenge for me to bowl to him; He's a wonderful player and he has proved it; I felt that I could get him out on my slower ball as faster you bowl at him, the easier it is for him - thankfully my plan worked against him and also he got some runs, so it worked out for both of us"

"I would like to congratulate Bilawal Bhatti as he has been waiting for this opportunity for a while, and he proved himself as he had the hunger to succeed"

"People think that there is little time in T20 games but that is not really true - we were 65 in 10 overs but made 134 in next 10 overs; So you always have time as a batter if you take your time (to settle in) - you cannot make runs in the dressing room if you lose your wicket; Riley proved that by staying to the end; Since I know him from SA, I can tell you that he is a wonderful player and he can make runs in any situation - he is a very talented guy"

"When your are winning, the atmosphere around every team is very good; Its when you lose is when you find out who your real friends and teammates are"

"In our journey of playing in different leagues around the world, the main thing for me is to see what you have left behind for the youngsters in the side; I can leave from here happy with my personal performances but what I want to leave with is the fact that my side has won"

"The first thing I have done is have Multan's Sohan Halwa; The first day we came here, we had Sohan Halwa; I havent been out and about too much but I will try and escape and do that if management allow it"

"My family is here, my uncle has come from Bahawalpur and all my friends arer here too"

"People here are passionate for cricket as shouting for your team for 5 hours isnt an easy job"

"I wont lie and say that its been a long time since I have received so much love from a city (Multan)"

In reply to Afridi being dropped question - MS managament stated that Afridi had hurt his knee while chasing ball and had not been dropped - Tahir added:

"If Shahid Afridi is ever dropped from this side, then I will go back!" [As in dropping him is not possible]

"Afridi is a legend and on the field he is like a Cheetah"

"He is a legend of the game and I dont think he can be dropped from any team"

"As older members of the team, we cannot relax and need to work harder as the youngsters have more years ahead of them"

"When my passion for the game ends, I will hang my boots and not play again"

Imran Tahir yet to play a game in PSL 6 - will he get a chance?

Imran Tahir gets his first game of PSL6 vs Quetta and gets the wickets of both openers, 2/29 in his 4 overs.

From cleaning toilets and making sacrifices for the love of his life to rubbing shoulders with some of the most iconic names in cricket, Imran Tahir’s is a story that tugs at your heartstrings.

It’s his humble roots, Tahir says, that have helped him remain grounded and he never misses out on a chance to share his life experiences with young cricketers.

The Pakistan-born South African leg-spinner has now made more friends in his cricket journey, this time in the UAE local club cricket where he has been playing to gain some match practice ahead of next month’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 41-year-old spinner, who has taken 293 wickets in 165 matches across formats for South Africa, also spent some time with the students at the G Force Cricket Academy in Dubai where he agreed to share some of his experiences with Khaleej Times during an interview.

You have gone through a lot to reach where you are now in your life and your career. You played first class cricket in Pakistan before moving to South Africa to get an opportunity to play international cricket. The path to that goal was difficult for you. Is it one of the reasons that you have still remained so grounded, mingling here in the UAE with local club players, sharing with them your experience?

Look, we are made by one God which is Allah. And I think there is no difference between us. I think we have created the differences, which is a sad thing in the world we are living at the moment. I have seen lots of ups and downs in my life, I know the value of everything. I have lost lots of things while arriving here, the people closest to my heart, my parents. I see myself as the guy who did not have help, I don’t want the youngsters to suffer those things. I have played 22 years of first class cricket and I have 10 years of experience in international cricket playing for South Africa. I don’t want kids to wait that long. If I see someone who needs help, and as much as I can give to that person, I try my best and I try to be as honest as I can. Especially when it comes to leg-spin, there were lots of things that I learnt very late in my career. I always wished that why I didn’t have that before. But I think that was my destiny. So what I have learnt from my religion, my parents and friends, you know, I have to remain honest and humble. There are lots of things I can tell you. You know, I used to clean toilets. That was my job at 6 in the morning. Then in the UK, I also used to be a waiter in a restaurant. That’s why I can never disrespect anyone.

We have read that you fell in love with your wife while playing for the Pakistan under 19 team in South Africa. Then you decided move to South Africa…

What happened was I knew my wife for a very long time. But then she never wanted to marry a guy from overseas because she grew up in South Africa. I knew the family, then slowly I built a relationship and that took me over eight years. They agreed that we can get married. Then I went for a trial because she wanted me to play in South Africa because she grew up there. It was difficult for her to move to another country whereas I always was a traveler, having played in so many places. I wanted to make the sacrifice because I wanted to marry her, and then she helped me a lot. Just before we got married, I got the contract. Things were a little bit tough in the first two years, but then that’s how it started. I played five years of first class cricket in South Africa. And then I finally got picked for South Africa.

It must have been a very emotional moment to finally play international cricket when you made your debut in 2011…

The love people gave me in South Africa, the support I got from Cricket South Africa and my teammates, it was something that I could never ever imagine. You know, it was a very proud moment for me to get into the South African dressing room. I never really thought I would be sitting next to Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Faf du Plessis, Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock, I mean if you look at it, this is the best line up of talent in the world and I really feel honoured and grateful to Allah that I played international cricket with some of the best players that ever played the game.

And still you have been humble enough to play club cricket in the UAE, having achieved so much at international level…

First, of all, I am very grateful to IGM (a cricket club in UAE) which gave me this opportunity. I loved my teammates and I am really grateful to Aman Maulvi who is looking after the players so well. I can tell you that the cricket standard is really good here. I have been really impressed.

The IPL is your next big tournament. Of course, you would be hoping to play in the T20 World Cup this year…

I am always hopeful. That’s my dream. Anytime South Africa needs me, I am available for them. They are looking at my performances wherever I go, and play cricket. And IPL, I am always very excited to join the Chennai Super Kings. I will try to play as many games as I can. If I get that opportunity, I need to perform to put pressure on selectors in South Africa.

Your celebration after taking a wicket, when you sprint with arms wide open and you let out a big roar, is among the most iconic celebrations of all time in cricket….

The area where I grew up in Lahore, you know, it was a very humble background. So I come from there and played international cricket finally after lots of ups and downs. I always used to think that if one day the world saw my talent, I would express my feelings to them. I think all those tough situations I was in, I think those were stored in my body. And I think they just come out spontaneously.

Finally, we have to ask you this. Who are the toughest batsmen you have bowled to?

All my South African teammates, they were the toughest to bowl. We had AB, Hashim Amla, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Faf, JP, David Miller, Quinton de Kock. If I bowl to them, I have no fear to bowl to anyone. But if I look outside South Africa, I think Virat Kohli is the number one player. To bowl to him, you have to be at extreme top of your game. He loves the battle. I personally think he is the best player against my art (leg-spin), my art against his art. I think he is very tough to bowl to

Imran Tahir.

Age: 42

PSL 6 Final Performance? 3/33 in 4 overs

Not selected for SA's T20 World Cup squad and not happy.

Tahir, Shamsi and Maharaj would cause a lot of batting orders a lot of trouble. Surprised with his omission.

Any chance Pakistan can take Tahir back? He's still really good. If he's fit he can play till 45.

I like Imran Tahir but surely this is his last season as a player in PSL?

We have said that about Malik for the last 10 years but he is still going "strong". There is an old saying about Actors- they don't retire, they just stop getting roles. Tahir will play until someone doesn't pick him

Happy Birthday to Imran Tahir - 44 years old.

I really do not see him taking part in PSL again as that really would be pushing the envelope on ages a bit too much
