India need to appoint a new Twenty20 captain and follow England’s template to revive their fortunes in that format, former head coach Ravi Shastri said on Thursday.

Rohit Sharma, 35, remains India all-format captain but the team’s defeat in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia has prompted calls to inject fresh blood into the side.

Rohit and fellow batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been rested for India’s tour of New Zealand where Hardik Pandya will lead the T20 squad while Shikhar Dhawan will be in charge for the one-day internationals.

“I think for T20 cricket, there’s no harm in having a new captain, because the volume of cricket is such that for one player to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy,” Shastri told a virtual news conference.

“Rohit is already leading in one-days and Test matches. There’s no harm in identifying a new T20 Captain, and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it.”

The former all-rounder was impressed about how England transformed into a white-ball juggernaut and won the T20 World Cup on Sunday to become the first team to hold both the 50-overs and 20-overs global titles at the same time.

“They sat down and said ‘We are going to change our resources, we are going to identify the best players for the format, whether it’s T20 or 50-overs cricket, and if it meant certain senior players had to sit out, so be it.’ They got in youngsters who were fearless, who could adapt to that pattern of the game without having to change too much.”

“It’s a template that can be followed easily. India has got a wealth of resources, and I think it can start now, from this tour.”

The 60-year-old did not think it was necessary for India players to participate in T20 leagues abroad to familiarise themselves with those conditions.

“They are absolutely fine playing IPL (Indian Premier League) and focusing on domestic cricket.

“We need them to play domestic cricket as well.”

Agree with Shastri

Pakistan should do the same or accept mediocrity

Overall I agree that T20's should be played in the same spirit as England and Australia.
But funny that's coming from someone who was in charge for some time. And he played with the same XI India currently has.

Any coach who is helpless because of an all powerful captain cannot implement his tactics

India can apply this template, provided the players are mentally tough enough to take criticism when it doesn’t go their way. India definitely has the players to make this template work and it will be great to have two teams who play an entertaining brand of cricket.

England players don’t really have the same pressure as players from the subcontinent do, so it was much easier for them to adopt this gung-ho approach.

Another point here is that there was no T20 World Cup between 2016 to 2021 so Kohli-Shastri duo didn't had enough focus on T20s and played the bilaterals just for the sake of it with focus towards 2017 CT and 2019 WC and Test cricket where the focus was to win test matches overseas starting from 2018.

This is also the reason why the likes of Dhawan, Rahane, Pandey, Jadhav etc were persisted and not replaced by other young T20 specialists like Samson or Suryakumar. The realisation of this only started after 2021 WT20 debacle and one year time is simply not enough to completely change the structure of the team. Now is the right time to make the changes altogether with 2 years still to the World T20 and these youngsters like Shaw, Samson, SKY started playing international games regularly now.

This is a relevant point. Fans in England are lot more casual about defeats.

What is the England template exactly ? The first three batsmen, openers + 1 down, must bat aggressively in the powerplay. The remaining batsmen bat normally if wickets fall early. That's pretty much it, that's not a hard strategy to copy at all.
Any top team can do it if their management backs it.

Indian fans and administration is not mature enough to embrace it fully. If someone like a prithvi shaw gets out to a lose shot the fans and likes of Gavaskar will lambast his technique and fitness levels. Players will always be fearful of losing their place in a cricket mad nation like India.

Neither India nor Pakistan can play like England with poor last 5 batsmen. England makes a compromise with their bowling. THey don't look for perfect bowlers. They have a couple of decent ones and rest are all rounders. Pakistan strategy is to restrict opposition to below par and hope batsmen show up. India's strategy to score above par and hope they defend. You cannot achieve consistency with this kind of set up.

What people don’t understand is the England template is not only in their international structure but also in their domestic structure. India and Pakistan can never play with Englands template as the roots of sub continent cricket are timid and the approach will always be to be defensive.

That will indeed worth to watch .Young guns playing without fear but realistically kohli and sharma will be around till 2024 worldcup

Players with 200 T20 matches as captain:

307 - MS Dhoni
208 - Daren Sammy
200* - Rohit Sharma

I think Pak should also appoint shaheen for t20s and let baber captain the side in 23 WC
For tests we really dont have any other regular player to captain us rn and agree or not the losses we suffered were more of a reality check about the talent of our bowling dept than the inablity of captain
