Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed 73-year-old former player Wasim Bari as the wicket-keeping consultant at its high performance centre here. Once the news of the appointment came out there was plenty of backlash from critics who questioned the logic behind appointing Bari.

The PCB said that it had created the post of wicket-keeping consultant on the request of Bari and as an acknowledgement of his services to Pakistan cricket. Bari is a respected figure in Pakistan cricket having also captained the national team.

“He was working as director of the high performance centre but his contract expired on 31st December and he requested to be given a three-month extension,” a PCB source said.

He said PCB chairman Ramiz Raja, out of respect for the former captain, had asked for the special post to be created and approved the three-month extension for Bari, who played 81 Tests and 51 ODIs for Pakistan.

Bari has held several senior positions in the board having worked as its director cricket operations, chief selector and national team manager and also head at the national cricket academy.

The board has said that it had advertised for the position of director of the high performance centre in Karachi and an appointment would be made soon.

If being a director means hiring the right staff and supervision etc then its fine but he cannot be actively involved in coaching.

When will we move on from these dinosaurs? We keep on going to TTF's who take the PCB as a 9-5 job

He is a legendary WK , but PCB needs to get in somebody who has played recently , cricket as whole has changed a lot.

Wow Rameez.

So you went after Misbah and co, only to hire your friends from the 90s

had asked for the special post to be created and approved the three-month extension for Bari, who played 81 Tests and 51 ODIs for Pakistan

so if you are friends with Rameez, special posts can be made

But nahi jee, Misbah was a bad coach uder change lana tha

What next - Inti as the new batting coach at the NHPC?

Wow, big ol’ 73…Seven Three…Seventy Three.🤣

Only PCB could hire a 73 year old budha baba.

What’s next, Sarfaraz Nawaz as reverse swing specialist, Javed Miandad as running between the wickets specialist.😆

Can't really lump Misbah with others. Misbah wasn't delivering and we were playing an outdated brand of cricket under him. He had to go.

3 players from his coaching won icc awards.

The team he had went with was the same that got selected in world t20 and reached semis

Well I liked a few things Ramiz did, but now he's just gone on to appoint Wasim Bari (the guy who oversaw Younis, Yousaf, Rana Naved, Shoaib Malik etc bans in 2010 and selection fiasco of wc07 and the time before that) and appointing Umar Rasheed(Haroon Rasheed's brother) as Hasnain's NHPC bowling coach (this guy has been in PCB for over 20 years now working in different capacities like fielding coach, bowling coach etc etc)

It's either the guy works for ECB, CA or CSA or the 80s guys with no modern training skills for Ramiz. Nothing in between. :))

Relax guys it’s a 3 month ceremonial post. He’s not goona be out on the field wicket keeping with Riz.

he cant teach riz anything, wicketkeeping has completely moved on, since bari was one, its abut what can he teach rizwan, nothing, so why hire him ? whole point of hiring a coach is to improve... Bari far too old

Couldnt even contact prior / even chris read-(very good wicket keeper-riz will improve batting under hayden) / Geraint Jones / boucher -im assuming hes busy coaching in SA

There should be no room for sentiment in appointments

Pakistan cricket really needs more professionalism

Exactly hence why it’s a ceremonial post and he’ll be moving on after 3 months.

Seems like he turned to some old friends to get back in at this age.

Crazy appointment to get a 73 year old in.

Waseem bari wants to have a job and probably has no other way to earn at this age.

This makes you wonder if pcb has a pension program or not... If they dont than such problems will come.

If a pension of atleast 1.5 lakh is being given in this economy than giving this job to him is ridiculous.
I dont understand why he asked for three months though

Good choice. Thankfully it is not buttered fingers Kamran Akmal.

Surprised to see a 73-year old guy getting this job.

All the best to him nonetheless.

Big Blunder by RR why would you give someone a position for 3 months even if he is getting paid peanuts.

Wasim Bari is arguably the best pure gloveman we've ever had so his age shouldn't preclude him from a consultancy role on wicketkeeping.

What should preclude Bari from a role with PCB is the fact is he's occupied so many other roles over the years, and I'm not sure what tangible results he's produced.

Maybe he has some financial commitments for the next 3 months for which he needs the money

What does a wicket-keeping consultant even do?

Sounds like a job created just to keep him on the payroll.

exactly - thats why no other nation does this, they do as much as possible to hire a long term positions = as every coach needs time.

no need to hire a person for 3 months, never mind this guy who doesn't hold a up to date coaching badge

3 months Ceremonial post, Giving him his legendary moment.. we shouldn't make fun of the situation or get mad
