The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to grill Indian team skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri after the team's shambolic performance in the first two Test matches against England. India, after losing the first Test closely by 31 runs at Edgbaston, slumped to a crushing defeat by an innings and 159 runs in the 2nd Test at the iconic Lord's Stadium.

The BCCI sources suggest that the BCCI is unhappy with the team's meek surrender in the first two Test matches. "What is happening on field is a result of the indiscipline shown off the field. Why are the players not staying, living as a team? Why does half team travel in a bus, rest in a train? Where is the team spirit? If this keeps happening, results like this are bound to show," top BCCI sources told Times Now.

The Indian board is also clearly unhappy with Virat Kohli being given all the power to make decisions on his own. The board is likely to ask for explanations from Kohli and Shastri depending on the result of the third Test. The squad for the last two Test matches is yet to be announced. According to reports, the questions arising in the BCCI corridors are why the captain, coach duo of Shastri and Kohli have been given immense freedom in terms of team selection and management.

The duo is likely to face the heat if the woeful form of the team continues in England. Earlier the players and team management had complained about a tight schedule and lack of match practice after losing in South Africa, however, this time around the players had enough time to prepare and some of the senior members were also sent to England with India A side for adequate time to acclimatise with the conditions.

“We arranged white ball matches first. It was on the senior team’s insistence that we send the India A team during the same time starting the concept of ‘Shadow Tour’ Two senior India players (M Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane) were accommodated for A team games. Whatever they wanted, they were provided. Now if results don’t come, the Board is well within its rights to ask questions,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Currently, the Indian team is embracing one of their toughest outings under Kohli's captaincy. The team has failed spectacularly to deliver in both the Test matches and are yet to open their win account in the ongoing series. The development of BCCI's displeasure over Kohli and Shastri comes at a time when the skipper is nursing a back injury and is not certain of his chances in the third Test.

If true, BCCI is likely to make a few surprising changes in the Test squad for the final two games, depending on how the third Test pans out. While the bowlers have put on a decent show, the batsman have managed only 673 runs combined in the first two Tests. India and England will lock horns in the third Test beginning from August 18.

Mate, why do I get the impression that you are the source of this news yourself?

Blame goes on the failure of the so called Test specialists who failed badly.

Rahane & Vijay could not even score as much as Pandya or Ashwin did in all of the innings combined.

You can blame this and that, but Vijay is timid as hell and Rahane has not made any significant contribution for a long time. Yet he is considered a Test specialist. Fact is, Rahane has been dreadful in LOI cricket and below average in Longer format for a while now.

At least the likes of Dhawan do not play timid. They need luck to score runs. With Vijay and Rahane, even if they get lucky, they do not score fast enough to cause any damage.

Too many passengers in the team. A coach is not going to magically improve the technique and skill.

Grilling should be about why Dinesh Karthik was picked for the side...

Karthik got jaffas in both innings in Lords Test.

Questions should be asked about the Senior Test specialists like Vijay and Rahane who have done nothing for a long long time now. Vijay limped to a century against Afghanistan and his spot in the side became a sure shot thing :))

You have plenty of indian people here who supports Karthik and gives out every excuse that is possible in the books.

I really don't understand this obsession with Karthik. It is same on the level of Umar Akmal.

This guy has been around for god knows when but still couldn't cement a place in the team.

Don't tell me it was politics. This guy has not the performance to back it up.

India will win next test and all of this will just disappear.

I agree. India to win the next game - 100% sure about that - oterwise TV ratings / viewership will go down and that's not good for sponsors, BCCI, ECB etc.

And once India wins the next game, all of this will disappear and Rahane, Vijay, Karthik, Dhawan will become ALL TIME GREATS all of a sudden

Dravid should be made coach, and the BCCI should tell Kohli his power over picking and choosing coaches is over.

Shastri should just join Mohsin Khan in making Lipton ads and stay away from coaching any side.

As an Indian fan, I'm still unclear about Shastri's role with the team.

He's obviously not a 'coach' coach, so then what is he there for? Just being a yes-man?

Shastri is as impactful a coach as Mohsin Khan. I mean who else is gonna cheerlead and make those cuppas ?!

It could be worse, India could have Mickey Arthur as coach.

Unfair to blame Shastri. His record as coach was pretty decent with Dhoni as captain in comparison to Kohli as captain. As far as I see things it is Kohli the captain who is the major problem.

Shastri wasn't the coach of the Dhoni-led test team, Fletcher was from 2011-2015. In ODI's, even Kohli has a pretty good record as captain.

Fletcher left in 2014 and Shastri took over from 2014 to 2016. Shastri is getting too much unnecessary stick.

Do you watch AajTak?Or understand Hindi? If you do search for "Vikrant Gupta" on twitter. He is a sport journo. Watch his programmes. You will exactly know what Ravi Shastri is doing.

With Anil Kumble India had a coach with integrity and skill. Getting rid of him was a travesty. Some of the decisions in SA and England by Shastri have been extremely poor.

@glory of 92 if you saw the sports Tak YouTube channel, vikrant Gupta rightly pointed out that this news is leaked by the out going members and questioned why grill them now when they should have been grilled earlier, the unprecedented thing is whole team doesn't travel by team bus but travel separately, karthik before 1st match spends 5 days in Copenhagen, immediately after lords test the dressing room doors get shut, the thing is since bcci was not at helms the pro lodha section allowed Kohli to be too powerful and that is harming Indian cricket, as this issue is at its end and reports coming that ganguly will head bcci hopefully we will see things for the betterment of Indian cricket, right now players are too intimidated by Kohli.

Fletcher remained India's head coach till 2015 WC. Shastri was the director pretty much what he's doing now.

We don't like people with integrity. We don't like people who criticise us and tell us where we are wrong. You will find this quality in some of the fans also. They all want yes man and want to live in their cloud cuckoo land always. :inti

SRT,Ganguly & Laxman, who headed the BCCI's CAC, had interviewed Richard Pybus, Tom Moody, Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag and Lalchand Rajput for the job of Indian team's head coach, & it is said that upon Kohli's insistance, chose Shastri for the job. They had also appointed Zaheer Khan as full time bowling coach & Dravid as batting consultant for overseas tours.

What followed was that Shastri & Kohli ensured that neither of Zaheer & Dravid would get those roles, while their friends Bharat Arun & Bangar were brought in as replacements. Bharat Arun replaced Zaheer Khan, while Bangar for Rahul Dravid.

Remember this was the same Shastri who had not found it necessary to attend the Interview for the role of Coach in person, & chose to get it done via Video conferencing from Nana Plaza, while holidaying at Bangkok. Such was his sense of entitlement. Now this has spread through the team, & everyone is so casual about everything that they chose to reach their host nations just days before the first match, skip practise matches, skip net sessions, skip travelling together, sneak out for holidays while on tour, shopping galore with WAG's, never take the blame & always act as if those unhappy with their performances r haters & trolls, & their stock reaction after humiliations is: We'll see them when they come to India.

The Indian Cricket is a money spinner today, & is being run by a mafia. There are people acting as agents, who r immensely powerful, & connected to shady businesses. Then there r political affiliates, providing patronage to them. Basically everyone around gets a share of the pie, while there is no accountability. The supreme court tried to intervene, but the attorney's of BCCI spun their web & SC orders ended up creating more confusion. Anyone who tries to challenge this hegemony is either purchased or kicked out like Kumble was.

I am praying for a 5-0 whitewash to be honest, knowing well that these players r too shameless to feel the pain, but still, that would at the least unleash the wrath of public towards them on Social & print media, for a while, before they beat Sri Lanka 10-zip in a home series, & all becomes hunky dory again.

I feel both Shastri and Kumble are ordinary coaches. Shastri doesn't have any opinion baring saying Kohli is right and Kumble was too patriarchal in his approach. I remember when Kumble was made the captain for Australian tour and the do and don't list he had come up with in writing, which was full of terms like "junior player" and "senior player". One of the clauses was if a senior player is injured and even if a junior player scores a century as replacement, the junior player should be ready to leave his place for the senior player in the next match. It was all about team consist of 2 kinds of players - juniors and seniors. That was his mindset, which I am sure would have reflected in his coaching time as well.

Hopefully Ganguly will become the head of BCCI. He is too powerful for Kohli and Shastri. Shastri should be kicked before the world cup.

Desi coaches will never benefit India. They are not professionals. Guys like John Wright, Gary Kirsten had successful stints because they were not yes man and always kept themselves in the background.

I miss Shastri in the commentary box, and I think that is where he belongs.

Tendulkar had his fan boys at his peak but Kohli is at another level. He can do nothing wrong at all. Anyone who thinks about working with him should think again if they want to maintain their self respect and reputation.

Results aside, Shastri-Kohli must be roasted for their team selection blunders alone.

The series is gone, so at the least try the youngsters like Nair & Shaw. If those guys have been selected for the tour, the team management on tour must have the confidence to play them.

However, I can pretty much guarantee that nothing is gonna happen, as the present dispensation has all the backings, right from BCCI to the shady agents to the fickle fans, who'll all throw hissy fits as soon as these Indian Tigers feast on hapless Windies & Lankans in home series.

And Shastri is getting paid 1.17 million dollars per year for this job. Just so he can have some nice holidays and get drunk umpteen times a tour.

So that travelling news which I posted in another thread is true. Team is not travelling in team bus but some in trains, some in cars etc. What is this??

I don't see anything wrong with this.

This is a team culture thing and culture isn't necessarily "right" or "wrong".

These guys already spend a lot of time together given how much cricket is played nowadays. And they spend time together outside of cricket too at dinners, etc like we see on their social media.

If someone wants to take a car to the stadium or someone wants to enjoy the countryside view by taking the train from one venue to other, then what's the harm in that?

Times change. Cultures evolve. If the players themselves like this then I don't see anything wrong with this.

Interesting.

I did not like the way Kohli and co. handed the situation but lek haat se taali nahi bajti.

I completely disagree. We all know what happens in England and the danger of travelling alone. God forbid something happens to the players when travelling alone with no security, who is going to be responsible.

Remember this incident. Secondly, every team travels in a team bus when abroad. What are India trying to prove by not travelling together, no practice games etc. One needs to respect the traditions of cricket.

TBH most of the general public in the UK dont know about cricket. I have seen Ganguly numerous times during the lords test on the tube, nobody batted an eyelid apart from a group of die hard indian IT professionals, who he blended in with. He even commented how he loved the fact that he could walk around with no one recognizing him, big difference from back home.

I'm sure security measures are much tighter now than they were 20 years ago.

And about practice games if you watch the interview Holding did of Kohli recently you will understand why he doesn't believe in them too much. He basically said that on tour games the opposition board gives flat wickets and weak oppositions and that is not a good way to gear up for international cricket. So instead they opt for practice sessions where they can control things like pitch, quality, etc.

Faf du Plessis said the exact same thing about tour games in SL, last month.

If that is the case, why did Kohli want to play county cricket? CC in england is substandard and kohli would have played the same set of bowlers on the same set of pitches which are flat.

Teams in county cricket are full strength. But Faf and Kohli both have said that the XI that is selected to play the tour games is often a 2nd string side of that domestic team. And the pitches that are provided for the tour game are nothing like the pitches that are given during the actual test series.

I feel 4-1 won't be a bad result, if Shashtri is shown the door.

The worst thing to ever happen to Indian cricket was them winning the meaningless Test at Jo'burg earlier this year. It prolonged the captaincy and coaching careers of these jokers in Kohli and Shastri respectively. They are just about as much of a captain and a coach as Shahid Afridi a sensible cricketer. It's absolutely nuts that these two have been allowed to be in those cushy spots for so long now.

all other teams touring England play practice matches. I do not understand what India wants to prove by not doing what other teams do . The same thing happened in SA. Practice matches are a good way to get into form. Pakistan did the same thing and played 2 practice matches and won the first test match. I am sure india could do as well

But they also lost the next match by an innings and 100+ runs.

So there's no way to correlate that Pakistan's practice games prepared them better for the test series.

Look, I don't know what the whole situation is. I'm just repeating what Kohli said. He gave an explanation for playing only 1 tour game and I shared it here. That's all.

Shastri is as much bad as a coach coach as Kohli is as a captain. Its not surprising to see that the combination of the worst coach in the history of Indian cricket and one of the the worst captains to ever lead team India has brought nothing but humiliation for India in this series.

You should check kohli captaincy record before calling him worse captain. .

Kohli isn't that bad - any other captain won't have changed the score line much. At the same time, put anyone making XI on merit as captain, IND'll smash teams at home. Kohli at least ticks two of the top boxes - he is the stand out player of the team, so his position is never a burden for the team and in any format, combination, condition - he'll be first name. Second box is, he is leading from the front, which even Sir Gary or Tendulkar failed.

He ticks the 3rd box as well - accepted as leader by most, if not everyone and he commands respect, doesn't bark at players selectively - whatever comes to mouth goes down to every direction from Vihari to Sharma; may be not a good example, but not a coward example. Fourth box is that, he is the fittest guy in team & the hardest worker - a role model for everyone. He can spend most times on field, can focus on his game for longer (for his fitness) and he won't ever let down his team by aggravating soft tissue injuries like hamstring pull, calf muscles or neck injuries (which are basically result of enjoying more comfort at gym or pleasure at restaurant).

Last box is his tactical nuances - which is also understandable. His team has two extremes, at one side, he needs to give the ball to Ashwin/Jadeja or whoever and ask them to bowl .... every batsmen is putting runs, every bowler is taking wicket. Other extreme is that apart from his bat, nothing is working. Tactics is something that has two face - if it comes out, you are genius, if it doesn't you are fool. In 1990 MCG Test, Imran put AUS in when Benaud suggested that this wicket will get faster on Day 2 - AUS went to Lunch 85/0, and 2nd Day PAK was all-out for 107. But, Imran wasn't fool either to insert AUS in - PAK fielders dropped 6 catches in 1st day, 3 before lunch.

Therefore, lots of things Kohli is doing in field that I see, which simply slapping him back at hind side, because barring him, his envious batting line-up is batting like minnows when challenged out of their comfort zone. We have criticized him lot for Pandeya, but this Test clearly shows, 3 pacers don't have the stamina to bowl 30 overs each in 1st innings at high tempo.

Only area that I can criticize him is his team selection - being the God like powerful Captain. But, that's not his fault alone - for cricket fanatic like me, I had to spend some time scratching memory of 3 BCCI selectors - Devan Gandhi probably had a 50 at home in 1998 NZ series, MSK Prashad was 4th choice WK for couple of seasons & .. sorry, 3rd one I'll have to check CI, can't recall. These guys are not worthy enough to have a fruitful chat with Kohli - level is different. Also, BCCI has to manage Kohli's individual sponsors as well.... they can't take drastic actions against him when his every number is outstanding, until we filter it up to Captaincy at outside Asia Tests.

Cricket captain is a leader first, which he is; then tactician, for which he has a charmer to support. IND's biggest mistake was to appoint a Deshi as Head coach - BCCI had enough riches to appoint someone like Moody or Ford or Arthur as Head Coach instead of this showman, and things could have been different.

I sincerely hope he does. The man is as worthy as a sack of manure.

I hope the next coach is a toughie who isn't intimidated by Kohli's celebrity status and puts him on a tight leash.

Kohli needs to be "manned" by a tough coach, he is no match winner anymore and creating a bad impact as a captain. He should only play as a batsman

Kohli is a good man manager and a good leader. I would sack Shastri and appoint a good who is a proven tactican as mentioned by MMHS.

Epic humilation how???
How many matches england won when they tour last time in INDIA

Talk about this tour. No need to go back in history. Shastri's India lost to the RSA and England that were deemed as all important tours. If India lose 4-1 to England it will indeed be "epic humiliation" seeing how confident even boastful India were before the tour.

Injuries to Bhuvaneswar and Bumrah for the first 2 tests was a big blow for India. But at the end of the day ENgland's depth bailed them out every single time. India was in commanding position to win both 1st and 4th test. some puzzling captaincy let England off the hook. Also India lost all 4 tosses. There was so much against India with conditions heavily favoring guys like clouderson, broad.

Keep dreaming. Anil Kumble tried to do that and he was thrown away by BCCI.
