Asia Cup Preview: Pakistan Ring in Changes, Rope in Motivational Expert Ahead of India Rematch

New Strategy, New XI

Desperate to overturn their fortunes against India in the Asia Cup rematch, Pakistan are set to tweak their playing eleven and approach. Sources told Telecomasia.net that a crucial meeting was held involving skipper Salman Agha, senior players Fakhar Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi, and the coaching staff, where the line-up for Sunday’s Super Four clash was finalised.

Opener Saim Ayub, who has endured a lean patch with no notable scores in three matches, will be shifted to number four in the order. Either Fakhar Zaman or Mohammad Haris is expected to open, a move designed to ease pressure on Saim.

A source said

The team management has worked with Saim on his technique and reminded him of his unbeaten 98 against South Africa. He has been asked not to attack from the first ball, but to assess conditions before building his innings.

Saim’s struggles at the top are evident, falling in the first over eight times in his last 29 T20Is. But the management hopes a middle-order role may unlock his potential, even though he has batted there only four times, with limited success. Haris, meanwhile, is expected to benefit from a return to his preferred opening slot, buoyed by his recent fifty against Oman.

Mid-Order Shuffle
Another underperformer, Hasan Nawaz, is set to be dropped, paving the way for an all-rounder — either Faheem Ashraf or Hussain Talat.

A source revealed

Talat is a steady left-hander who can handle Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel’s spin, while Hussain offers the added advantage of seam bowling.

Nawaz’s struggles against spin have been glaring, with dismissals to slow bowlers in ten of his last 14 T20I innings. The bowling line-up, however, will remain unchanged, with Haris Rauf joining Shaheen Afridi as the frontline pacers.

Oman’s Blueprint
Pakistan’s coaching staff reminded players of Oman’s spirited performance earlier in the tournament and also revisited footage of Pakistan’s successful chase of 182 against India in the 2022 Asia Cup. Both instances are being used to bolster belief ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes encounter.

Motivational Boost
In a move highlighting the psychological weight of facing India, 'Pakistan have enlisted motivational speaker Dr Raheel Karim to strengthen the squad’s mental resilience. Dr Raheel, an experienced sports psychologist with over a decade of work across disciplines, joined the team on Wednesday and will stay until the tournament concludes', Telecom Asia Sport has learnt.
Clashes against India have often exposed Pakistan’s mental fragility, with the men in green losing 11 of their 14 T20I meetings. Last Sunday’s seven-wicket defeat added to that tally. The appointment of Dr Raheel reflects the management’s view that overcoming India requires mental fortitude as much as tactical adjustments.

Silence Speaks Volumes
Adding to the sense of pressure, Pakistan cancelled their scheduled pre-match press conference on Saturday. The decision, insiders suggest, was to avoid questions about the “no-handshake” controversy from the group-stage clash, and to keep focus strictly on preparations. With tactical adjustments and psychological reinforcements, Pakistan enter Sunday’s clash aware that their Asia Cup campaign — and pride — may hinge on this performance.

bad decision to drop hasan nawaz, he is your best player against spin and better than hussain talat. Who is performing against spin anyways, even fakhar struggles

Who’s the motivational speaker?

Mohammad Rizwan?
you can read the name clearly but Rizwan is running the show in your brain atm... Good luck

Where's the video? Without video proof. I'm not believing anything.

If they can show video of Andy Pycroft inside dressing room. They must also have made video of the motivational speech.

Seriously hussain talat?

Anyways, this motivational speaker bull crap just shows how desperate pcb is now.

Naqvi needs to be removed now.

Eeesh doing too much

Watching highlights.

Getting a speaker lol.

This will only put more pressure and they might do dumb stuff on the field - play stupid shots etc.

Oman did well (apart from the depleted Indian side) because they had no worries - no expectations, already out, just take it as a net session.

Bringing in a motivational speaker now? Should’ve focused on performance earlier. Feels like too little, too late.

The whole PCB setup is filled with grifters and con artists- naqvi, sumair, arsalan, naveed cheema, wahla, rafia, bilal Afzal, Amir Mir, aaqib, Hesson and Agha.

Expect more clownery from these jokers

All for roping in a sports psychologist but there should be one appointed on a full-time basis.

Unless PCB is broke after mindless expenditure on mentors that did zilch, sacking coaches after a few months etc.

Why are you getting so upset?

During last year's PSL, I made a post about Babar's captaincy and his batting in T20s. I then found out someone altered my words after someone responded to it. No prizes for guessing who it was.

Pakistani players can pep talk, motivate, delude themselves as much as they want, they will ultimately **** themselves when exposed to the superior talent, skillset of Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Surya, Tilak Varma, Dube, Pandya, Axar, Kuldeep, Bhumra. It's a battle between untrained, unqualified players vs highly trained, highly equipped elite navy seals, no amount of motivation and pep talk can hide the inevitable. Pakistani players don't have the mental strength and fortitude to handle the pressure of an Indo Pak contest

Will be funny to see Pakistani batters like Harris play with reckless puljhari against Bhumrah and fail spectacularly. Playing cross bat slogs with zero technique does not work against world class bowlers

Aisi bi bat nhi log keh rhe hai ke indian team ne pakistan players pe kala jadu kiya hua hai you never know kia pta aisa kuch ho rha ho waise bi india mein kala jadu bohat hota hai

Why now, right in the middle of a tournament?

More distraction for the players.

Besides, if players need a motivational speaker to boost their morale and spirit against India, then there is something wrong with their upper compartment.

The problem is that most of them are trying to play big shots too early instead of playing themselves in. Playing needless cross-batted aerial shots. And because of poor technique and/or timing, they are just giving catching practice to the fielders. The plan should be to rotate the strike initially with the odd boundary and then target specific bowlers or overs. No need to whack every ball in the air. That is just brainless cricket.

Even in a format like T20, you can afford to play 25-30 dot balls (not 60) and still post a 170 + total. BD proved that yesterday (32 dot balls)

At the moment, anything is welcome to make this team good enough to beat India.

So true bro they just want to play reckless cricket by the name of intent they should take singles which is available all the time and look to get boundaries when ball is in your slot.

They have taken the word 'intent' literally to heart. Intent without proper technique, shot timing or planning does not work. The net result is 'na teetar na batere'

There's a problem here.

Hesson and Salman. Promised everyone that they're going to play modern day Cricket. Now when you make that decision. It takes time to get good at it and to make a good batting XI.

It becomes even more difficult to play modern day Cricket on tricky surfaces or not as true as the ones in UAE.

That leaves them with two options. To either continue to play aggressively on slower pitches or change you approach and play more cautiously

Changing the approach would mean a bashing from fans who wanted to get rid of the cautious RizBar approach.

People were unhappy with Riz-Bar not because they were not hitting many sixes, but because of their inability to rotate the strike / too many dot balls. Showing intent does not mean you try to hit every ball in the air or play risky crossbatted shots. A sensible batting approach, involving a mix of controlled aggression and good strike rotation, is required.

No. Babar literally has one of the best single taking ratio in T20Is for Pakistan.

It was Rizwan who was struggling in recent times with too many dot balls.

Babar's problem was inability to hit in the air which is crucial in power players because he played in top 3 always, most times opening. Pakistan had the worst 6 hitting ratio in power plays.

Yes. Hitting sixes was his problem. But not strike rotation.

That's why people suggested him that he should come at no. 3. But he was too late to realize that now he is out. With his best buddy Rizwan (who cannot get a run in shorter format on anything towards off side now - teams have found out his weakness).

Doing a single analysis on Babar and Rizwan should not even be a thing. Two diff players, with two very different ceilings and roles (I don’t consider Riz a t20 opener).

Pakistan played 50 dot balls today. As I said before, a good team should not be playing more than 25-30 dot balls. Salman Agha was one of the main culprits. Talat, Agha, and Nawaz slowed things down and ruined all the momentum in the middle overs. There was a period when there were only 25 runs scored in 5 overs and no boundary for 40 balls! Such lack of game smartness can be the difference between victory and defeat, between posting a daunting 200+ and a decent 170

Those extra 20 dot balls translate to 30-40 runs in the last 4-5 or slog overs.

Wrong team selection (replacing Hassan Nawaz Hussain Talat) and batting order. Haris and Faheem (in present form) should always come ahead of Talat, Agha and Nawaz)). That and lacklustre bowling in the first half was the difference between the two sides. Unfortunately for Pakistan, SSA did not have a very good day with the ball. Bumrah didn't either, but trundler Shivam Dube and the Indian spinners more than compensated for Bumrah. For once, Haris Raif was not so expensive.

The motivation was to sledge relentlessly. And Pak did win the match of sledge with the uber confident sledging bowling approach which leaked runs more than their confidence.

Sure a cake cutting ceremony was organised behind closed doors in honour this moral victory.
