According to media reports, Salman Butt has decided to retire from professional cricket and focus on life post cricket because he knows he will never ever play for Pakistan again. He has apparently been offered a commentary role in domestic cricket by the PCB.

==

I think its a smart and practical move for him. No point in toiling away endlessly in domestic cricket and taking up a youngsters spot as well.

Pcb have lost their senses if they offer butt any kind of role after his playing career comes to an end

He's only just realised that he will never play for Pakistan again? I could have told him this in 2010. It's taken him 10 years to figure it out. Slow learner!

I really hope he doesn't get a commentary role, even in any low profile domestic cricket. He deserves nothing from the PCB.

Seems to want to go the Ajay Jadeja way, and clean up his image by years of commentary.

Pity he's a bit too abrasive for that as well, but we'll see (hear).

I hope Butt is better than horrendous Azhar Ali in commentsry. My ears bleed listening to him.

With the PCBs record you wouldn't have been surprised that he played again.

Well it sure would be awkward listening to him talking about spirit of the game in the comm box that's for sure....

No self respecting broadcaster would want him in the comms box

Its a shame cos hes well spoken and quite intelligent Uf only he used his brains for doing good rather than bad

I was going to say this was the wisest and most unselfish thing he has ever done, after reading the headline.

But the thought of hearing him in the commentary box makes me nauseous. Don't know what PCB were thinking of by offering him a commentary role. There are plenty of sports journalists in Pakistan who can speak English and actually understand the game quite well.

They seem to be offering every dodgy outspoken and controversial character a job at the moment

In that regard butt fits the bill perfectly

First of all, good riddance to him.

Secondly, that is really really poor from the PCB if it is true. A convicted fixer should not be offered any role or association with the PCB. The PCB should have had an especially hardline stance with him given that he betrayed them and the whole country while being the captain of the national team. And continued to lie about it for years. If a private group or channel decides to hire him that is up to them, but the national cricket board and PTV should not hire this shameless cheat. I hope someone says this to Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani's face'.

Will forever be remembered as a sell out , no matter what he does , shame on pcb 👎🏽
More deserving people out there for commentary roles 🤷🏽*♂️

Big loss for Pakistan cricket... How will we ever get over this loss. :danish

At this point, better it be Butt doing commentary than potentially having a chance (however little it may be) to play for Pakistan again. Farewell.

I highly doubt he'll ever become a commentator, it'll make things sour for the viewer hearing his voice and many people are gonna be against him anyways for ruining the country's reputation.

Who is he?

Pakistan's best batsman in the 2018 u19 World Cup

The only Pakistan cricketer alongside Shaheen to be named in the 2018 team of the u19 World Cup alongside Shubman Gill and others

Played domestic quaid e azam last year

was the second highest run scorer and averaged 60+

Outstanding batsman from Lahore. Left handed opener and a very good off-spinner

Played club cricket last year in UK and did really well

speaks English well, super fit

And his Dad owns a cricket club, so this guy trains literally 5 hours a day, and plays tons of club games

Future test opener for Pakistan for sure.

Poor posts over here. He has been punished enough, you can't keep hating or punishing a guy forever. Let him live in peace and have a second chance in life. It's not like he killed someone

Many of these guys who have cheated in exams, given bribe to traffic policeman. Guy made a mistake, he paid a big price. His family name was humiliated all across cricketing world. His career ended. Let bygones be bygones. When Amir gets chance to come back then why not Butt?

Butt should be given every chance to come back, but there are certain roles that should be off limits.

Commentary is one such. As a convicted fixer, there are many problems with making a person like him a “voice of Pakistan cricket”. There are two most primary reasons for this.

The first is the precedent it sets for the rehabilitation of criminals in the public eye - Butt is perhaps one of the most notorious fixers ever convicted by any country. What message are we sending to future generations of cricketers about the penalties of fixing? What message are we sending to the outside world about our commitment to cracking down on fixing? What message are we giving to rats like Saleem Malik and Danish Kaneria, who will leverage this to cry out at persecution until they too are given jobs by the PCB?

The second is the the voice itself that he is given: commentator’s voices are influential. They are respectable figures who understand the game well and have a solid grasp on the nature of the game. It is their job to sell cricket to the viewer - to educate the viewer of the beauty of cricket, to maintain in the public eye the spirit of the game, to be relatable figures who the audience can trust as a lens through whom to view the ongoing match. How will Butt talk about upholding the spirit of cricket when there is a misdemeanor on field? Given he is being offered a position as domestic commentator, how will he discuss youngsters making their ways in the first and second XI’s? How can he claim that an up and coming fast bowler is a real talent and should be looked after by the PCB, when he is himself responsible for destroying Mohammad Amir? He has already used his position within Central Punjab to bring youngsters like Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, and Usman Salahuddin onto his YouTube channel. How do we feel about a convicted fixer leveraging this continuous influence bestowed by the PCB to interact with our youngsters and our future?

Very few others have ever been convicted, and fewer still were Test captains. Cronje and Azharruddin are the only two cases that supersede Butt’s. Cronje is unfortunately no longer with us, while Azharruddin was only allowed back into the structure after he cleared his name of charges. Even then, Azharruddin avoided the public eye - he does not actively engage beyond a regional level.

Give Butt a job as regional batting coach. He is a smart person and works hard, and has the ability to communicate his skills in a localized manner. Make him a coach of one of the 90 upcoming City Cricket Associations - he can restore goodwill by doing a worthwhile job there.

But commentator? No way.

Salman Butt actually is a very good analyst and has a good insight of the game.

Wasim, Waqar were heavily censured by the Justice Qayyum commission where they even said they should not be allowed any role in cricket again especially in Akrams case, didn't stop him from becoming a pundit, coach and highly respected influential member of society in Pakistan.

Good bye and good riddance. Didn't have any problem with him playing domestic, but his constant complaining and victim mentality was exhausting

Really hope PCB doesn't throw coaching or administrative roles at him because of his 'spoken english'

Let him be a commentator, or analyst for a sports network. Don't need any more delusional people in the PCB

Great!! Which team he will be playing for? I couldn't find his name in any team.

I have more sympathy for Hansie Cronje than Salman Butt. At least Hansie confessed everything when he was caught instead of lying for years.

Both did same crime but Hansie committed crime out of greed for that moment he was influenced, that's why he confessed his crime.
But Butt looks like he used to those crimes and thought he would get away by lying.

Exactly. Salman Butt kept denying his crimes for many more years thinking that he'd get away with it. And that's the reason I have very little sympathy for him. Shahid Afridi said the same thing about Butt. The guy lied to his countrymen for so many years and then finally admitted to his crimes when he knew that he'll never have any career with the PCB until he didn't come clean.

Its entertaining because of his background.

But question is - will people take him seriously as a pundit?

He won't be getting any international work for sure, even a role in PSL commentary panel looks difficult for now.

Heavily censured yes, but for a number of probably shady reasons, they were not officially convicted of fixing, which made it a lot easier for them to go into punditry and remain respected. Wasim and Waqar also happen to be among the greatest cricketers to ever play the game.

He is known for speaking negatively against any person remotely related to 2010 team and it's management.
Aizaz Cheema is probably a better analyst than Butt.

Wasim and Butt are totally different cases. Firstly, Wasim is the best left arm fast bowler of ALL TIME. He is widely respected as a cricketer all around the world. His views and insights will always be respected. Secondly, there was no legal action on Wasim. Qayyum report was sabotaged to save his career just like Lodha report was burnt to save Dhoni (allegedly). However, Butt is known worldwide as face of spot fixing. He confessed his crime and was legally persecuted.

He will make a good commentator, looks like a bloke with a lot of insight, and insider information into the game.

People rarely get second chances within the same organisations that they wronged in the first place. Butt was allowed back into domestic cricket but still whined and moaned.

Interesting career indeed. Had some ability with bat square of wicket. Wonder if he'll ever write a book, for educational purposes.

I don’t think so - he’ll need to spill some details for the book to sell, and we all know he loves it when he sells.

Only problem is his handlers won’t be too happy about him spilling the details, and he’s too chummy with Kamran Akmal and co to sell them out. Possibly Wahab Riaz too actually.

I watched an old interview of Salman Butt. He seems to be from a well educated, wealthy family background. Really shocked to see him throw away his career for some bits of money. He was the captain, he would have earned way more money by honest means. I guess greed has no cure. Really sad. He really sabotaged the reputation of Pak cricket.

I was such a big fan of Salman butt after his hundred in Kolkata and also his performance in Australia, really a pleasing batsman to watch. His wristy cover drives were as good as Babar Azam's

No sympathy for him anymore

Butt is the dodgiest character out there. He seems like someone to me, who still doesn't have remorse for his actions.

As straight as a corkscrew, this man. he should never get an official position at any level of the game, ever.

ICC should've banned the trio for the lifetime & not only from playing cricket but also anything remotely related to cricket.

Organisations that give a chance to match fixers on their platform need to be ashamed of themselves.

I would like to see Salman Butt replace Ramiz Raja as the voice of Pakistan cricket. He would make a very good analyst.

I'm sick to death of the substandard commentary and punditry from the likes of Ramiz Raja and Wasim Akram.

This would be quite a role for a convicted criminal to acquire.
