Sri Lanka Cricket is almost certain of losing out on their tour to South Africa in 2017/18 in order to host the Independence Cup in celebration of the 70th Independence Day of Sri Lanka.

Earlier this month, Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat revealed that India will tour South Africa instead of Sri Lanka later this year.

Sri Lanka celebrates their independence day on 4th February to commemorate its internal political independence from British rule on that day in 1948 and with the support of the national Government, SLC has made plans to conduct the Independence Cup with the participation of three or four countries including India.

The finalized time, schedule dates, venues and participating countries will be notified by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) once all plans are confirmed.

“There is a South Africa-India tour coming up and it might clash with the India-Pakistan tour. The Indians are willing to go to South Africa in the period where we are scheduled to tour so we will discuss with India and South Africa during the next month’s ICC meeting in Dubai regarding our return tour, Independence Cup and then we all (Sri Lanka, India, South Africa and Pakistan) will accommodate each other.” Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala said.

“India has already given their willingness to play the Independence Cup in 2018 in Sri Lanka after Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe discussed this with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi recently. There is a lot of turmoil in Indian Cricket at the moment so that is why we have delayed the official announcement. We also might travel to India later this year for a short tour to celebrate their 70th Independence Day.” Sumathipala further said.

Bangladesh celebrated their Silver Jubilee of Independence in 1998 with a similar tournament hosting India and Pakistan

Wow wow wow..

A quadrangular series between India, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka is a mouth watering prospect. Each team plays the other twice and then we have the finals.

Although Pak may not be good enough to compete with those teams, maybe SL only.

Booya.

We haven't had a tri-series for so long and now we get a quad-series!

Colombo buses do come along nice!

Have terrible memories of one of the 90's Independence cup and one good memory.

A 4 nation series sounds like a good idea. I just hope SL put out good pitches. It'd be a shame if they are dead and slow.

Bangladesh hosted a tournament to celebrate their independence and invited Pakistan?

How it is possible?
India will tour southafrica and pakistan will tour new zealand

This would be brilliant, loved the tri-series back in the day.

I was looking at the FTP calender and India-Pakistan series for 2017-18 seemed bad (it was never going to happen anyways) for India as every other country was tied up during that time. So clout of BCCI worked, SL backed out of SA, and SA invited India. and SL is made happy by India visiting SL for independence cup. Pakistan gets invite so as not to leave them bemoaning the loss of games.

Eventually the only team that truly losses out is Pakistan while India gets its matches and SA and SL get to host India, hence the $$$$.

Virat Kohli’s team India to face Pakistan in the Independence Cup

BCCI has agreed to be a part of a quadrangular series in Sri Lanka involving Pakistan and South Africa.

Only less than a week ago, Sri Lanka Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said that there can never be any difference between India and Sri Lanka as long as both the countries continue to play cricket, while speaking at the WEF session on harnessing regional cooperation in South Asia.

Proving his words right, BCCI has agreed to be a part of a quadrangular series in Sri Lanka involving Pakistan and South Africa. The tournament named ‘Independence Cup’ will be played around Sri Lanka’s 70th Independence Day on February 4, 2018.

The President of Sri Lankan cricket Thilanga Sumathipala confirmed the series in his press conference and said that he is looking forward to host an exciting tournament. Since India is scheduled to tour South Africa at the same time, the dates for the tournament haven’t been announced yet.

Really missing those tri-series & quadrangulars:sigh: ! All that nostalgia.. Indian jerseys with "WILLS" branding , Sri Lanka with their "Singer", Shoaib starting his run-up from behind the Pepsi Logo on the ground...

Cars were regularly given out for man of the series with Oversized keys presented at the ceremonies... I used to think that they were presenting Monster trucks:)) , which explained the huge keys... :)))All kinds of crazy stuff happened in the desert back then.. So who knows.. :13:

I feel bad for the Lankan fans though, such a momentous occasion and they are going to play independence cup with South Africa and India, 2 teams much much superior to them in LOI's. Looks like it might not be much of a celebration for them lol.

SL dont host India at the same time. So Pak can still play SL no?

thats very much than 'mini' world up...half of the teams are participating

India already getting a lot of test cricket , south africa should have invited us. Easy clean sweep as well. :mhk

India, Pakistan, SA to play for Independence Cup in SL

Arch rivals India and Pakistan will play alongside Sri Lanka and South Africa in a four-nation Independence Cup in Sri Lanka in 2018, Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala confirmed. This will be the first time that India and Pakistan will face each other in any event apart from ICC and ACC’s major competitions since 2012/2013. Sri Lanka will host the tournament as part of their 70th Independence day celebrations. According to Sumathipala, India agreed to participate in the series after Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe discussed this with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi . “The Indians would be visiting South Africa in the time when we are scheduling the tour, so this matter will be discussed with India and South Africa during the next month’s ICC meeting in Dubai regarding Independence Cup and then we all (Sri Lanka, India, South Africa and Pakistan) will accommodate each other,” he further added. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board will soon reveal the dates and venues of the quadrangular cricketing eventevent once the formal procedures are done and dusted. To be noted, Sri Lanka gained their independence from colonial rule in 1948 and will celebrate their 70th year of independence in 2018.

Yeah, after the horror we had to go through during our Independence cup, the silver lining was probably winning the SL one. It was a great final.

I'd love to see more multi-nation tournaments, those were so much fun back in the 90s and each game had its own significance. I wonder why ICC did away with them.

Instead of Ind-SL playing each other every month if they include PAK or BD then it will make it whole lot more interesting.

Just realized the four teams participating are in the same champions trophy group

Multi nation tournaments are much better than bilateral series. Australian and Englad Tri Series were my fav.

So Pakistan - India hostility goes out of the window for this tournament ?

As if all is well. :inti

Yeah, BCCI will most likely get us removed from this tournament.

However, we have stopped hearing about boycotting the CT fixture now - looks like IND will play.

Sounds like a lot of fun, perhaps a good time to finally visit Sri Lanka and also see Pak beat India.

Bangladesh should have been invited too.

England needs to be one of the 2018 Independence cup and not South Africa. It would give the tournament a true meaning.

You forgot the Kitply cup :butt :yk

I always found the matches against Sri Lanka to be boring, but this will make the series interesting.

Well one thing's for sure, this tournament will probably put to rest the argument of best and worst ODI bowling sides in Asia :amir2

And who can forget the man of series driving the car around in the ground after winning it. :))

90s were a wonderful time. It's so lovely to reminisce about the good ol' days.

True and and another one at Dhaka best of 3 finals where Dada ,Robin and Kanitkar made us chase a huge score.

Let's see how our neighbours perform..

They last won against us at the Asia cup 2014, with lala blitz...

This time no la-la.. So we would continue to lead.

But I'm worried about the CT.

Pakistan might have an upper hand.

And not to forget, Aane do series' star bowler is back for them.

Let's see how our Rohit, kohli and yuvi tackle junaid, this time around

Yeah. That was cool. The whole team would climb in/on top of the car somehow.. the poor guy had to drive the car blind.. Also there used to be a "Master Blaster" award during the presentation in most of the series.. No prize for guessing who would win it when India won. !

Yeah. ! The drinks break was an event back then. They'd actually show the players getting drinks. !
These things played a huge part in giving Pepsi & Coke their "COOL" image among SC youth..

Compared to now where they cut the moment the commentator says "Drinks" and then come back midway of the next overs 1st ball. :69:

Well things aren't that horrible with non non-desi broadcasters. Ads are played every 5 to 6 overs unlike the desi channels that play ads after every over and wickets.

this is not surprising and now i think finally PCB have also realize these FTP with india are meaningless

and they better be find new alternates for the india series

Don't know why there aren't more tri or quadrangular series in cricket nowadays. I always found them to be more fun than 3 or 5 match series.

Sharjah Cups stopped a long time ago but Australia used to have one every year till very recently. Now they just have one 2-3 years later. And England completely stopped with their triangular NatWest series.

while this is all good, i hope we see the irony that sport and politics do mix.
Even if they make uncomfortable bed fellows from time to time.
