I went to a restaurant in Cape Town that was serving Iftar meals.

There were huge television screens in this restaurant that showed the Proteas vs Sri Lanka games. People were screaming with joy each time a Sri Lankan batsman lost his wicket

The atmosphere was very pub like and not spiritual

Is Ramadan not about abstaining from pleasures

Ramadan is certainly not abstaining from pleasures. The extent to which Molvi's around the world go to make Islam sound like some barbaric, intolerant and merciless religion is beyond me. Honestly, when you have people saying things like this, how can you even question non Muslims calling Islam a religion of terror? Our so-called Aalims and Molvis have hijacked the religion and transformed it into some medieval crusading religion.

Ramadan is certainly not about abstaining from pleasure. Pleasure can be derived from anything. And therefore, everything should be haram then. Does that make any sense? Pleasure is subjective. Some people even find pleasure in Salat, does that mean Salat is wrong you cannot pray because it gives you pleasure and Islam is all about abstaining from pleasures.

I'm not specifically targeting you but rather asking a general question, how can one even consider this? Do you guys honestly think Islam could be so, so, so strict that you would not be allowed to be happy? Ramadan is about abstaining from sins, just like pretty much rest of the year, the difference is that the reward in Ramadan is greater. Is watching a cricket match with your friends and being excited about it a sin?

As long as it halal pleasure it is permissible in all occasion.

Ramadan is not only about fasting and abstaining from food.

You should spend maximum time in the remeberence of God.

Major sporting events distracts you from God remeberence and self introspection.

Non spiritual movies, non spiritual music, sporting events is also a divergence of God remberence

Ramadan is God time and so let other things wait.

It's pointless dieting during the day and feasting at night and indulging on activities that divert you from God remberence

Does major sporting event really distract you from remembering God? Your imam can't be that weak that watching a sporting event would make you forget about God.

You're overthinking and analyzing. Following islam infant hard and please try not to make it hard for yourself.

I don't know about you but we Pakistanis prayed alot today as our super-talented team made us remember God a lot :-D

Listening to music is haraam and having fun is haraam now? Okay I've heard it all.
