Thousands protest in Kashmir over new status despite clampdown

SRINAGAR (Reuters) - Police used tear gas and pellets to fight back at least 10,000 people protesting Delhi's withdrawal of special rights for Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir state in its main city of Srinagar on Friday, a police official and two witnesses said.

The demonstration soon after Friday prayers was the largest since authorities locked down the revolt-torn region five days ago, cutting off telephone and internet services and detaining more than 500 political and separatist leaders.

Seeking to tighten its grip on the region also claimed by neighbouring Pakistan, India this week scrapped Jammu and Kashmir's right to frame its own laws and allowed non-residents to buy property there.

Regional leaders have warned of a backlash in the area, where militants have been fighting Indian rule for nearly 30 years, leading to the deaths of more than 50,000 people.

A large group of people gathered in Srinagar's Soura area, a police officer said, in violation of orders that prohibit the assembly of more than four people.

The crowd was pushed back by police at Aiwa bridge, where a witness said tear gas and pellets were used against them. "Some women and children even jumped into the water," a witness said at Srinagar’s Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, where pellet victims were admitted.

"They (police) attacked us from two sides," another witness said. The police officer said 12 people had been admitted to two hospitals in the city after receiving pellet injuries at Soura, taking the total injured in the protests this week to at least 30.

"There were around 10,000 people at the protest in Soura," the police officer said. "This was the biggest so far."

Thousands of extra paramilitary police were deployed across Kashmir just before the sweeping measures were announced on Monday to prevent large-scale protests.

Addressing the nation on Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had acted in Kashmir to help develop the region and that he hoped it would lead to investment and more job opportunities.

His Hindu nationalist-led party has long campaigned for abrogating Kashmir's special privileges in the constitution, which it sees as an appeasement to Muslims and a hindrance to its own development.

An Indian foreign ministry spokesman, Raveesh Kumar, played down the unrest, which he suggested was temporary.

"Just outside Srinagar things have really come back to normal," he said.

Kumar added, "People are going about their business, vehicles are plying normally. If we are confident of maintaining the law and order, I think those restrictions will be relaxed, I'm quite sure."

ARRESTS

But the police officer, who requested anonymity since he is not authorised to speak to the media, said that political detentions in the wake of the Modi government's decision to revoke Kashmir's special rights were continuing.

"Over 500 people are now arrested since Sunday," he said, including former chief ministers, ministers, lawmakers and leaders and workers from political parties and separatist groups.

Modi's party and even some top opposition leaders have welcomed the decision to absorb Kashmir fully into India, and it has brought him support across the country.

Within Kashmir, officials are hoping anger will die down. On Friday, they eased restrictions to allow residents to offer prayers in neighbourhood mosques and said they were making arrangements for Eid, that falls on Monday.

The top administrative official of the Kashmir Valley, Baseer Khan, said that essential commodities including food, grains and meat, would be trucked into villages by Sunday.

Khan also said authorities would set up public phone booths covering every district, since communications lines have been severed by the government anticipating widespread protests.

"More than 300 phone booths will be established in a day or two at landmark points," he said.

Khan added that all medical services in the valley were working normally, although when Reuters visited two major hospitals and a smaller facility, officials said that doctors and staff were having difficulties reaching work.

Arch-rival Pakistan, which lays claims to Kashmir, has downgraded diplomatic ties with India and suspended trade in anger at its latest move.

On Friday, senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi said China was gravely concerned about the situation in Kashmir, the cause of two of three wars between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan.

Wang met Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Beijing and assured him that China would continue to support Pakistan to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

And this is with the presence of an extensive invading army.

Yet you'll hear the likes of Joshila tell us everyone is happy with it in IOK.

What happens when the million troops leave?

So after Al Jazeera, Reeuters giving out same news. Are we still turning blind eye on these international news outlets and calling them as fake news? Or are we just not interested in opening our eyes to current situation of Kashmir?

I feel an Indian from rest of India wants to live in a state where he/she is not informed of what is happening in Kashmir and that way they don't have to answer to any questions.

Correct. troodon can't trust Reuters either.

I wonder how many atrocities we would have already seen by now had there been no blackout.

What I fear the most is discovering that people have been disappeared after the curfew is lifted. The army in the cover of blackout might be doing undocumented acts of making pro-separatist voices disappear. Already heard in a report that couple of choppers filled with pro-separatist voices have been airlifted out of valley. God know what happens to them, God knows what is happening in valley now.

Sad to see people get hurt. Force should not be used as they are Indian citizens.

So the Mullahs doing a fine job in making mobs after Friday prayers.

Putting in army is not enough. You have to monitor what is being said in the Mosques by some crazy Mullahs.

It's not just the injuring/killing that's worrying, they are also kidnapping.

How do you make mobs? What would have been said to create mobs?

This isnt because of Friday prayers.

This is because they were allowed to leave their homes for the first time since the blackout.

Basically if India wants no protests, they have to keep Kashmiris in their homes forever.

"There have been a few stray protests in Srinagar/Baramulla and none of these involved a crowd of more than 20 people," a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

Do they think people are stupid?

Lol you can't force people to change their ideology. Hitler and Nazi germany tried and we know how history remember them. Modi and Indian army are repeating those same mistakes. India has never got such a bad PR which it got in last week or so.

What "bad PR" ? Haven't come across a single entity condemning India's move except Pakistan and it's Lollywood actors.

That is a massive crowd. Modi's move has backfired. No wonder they have 1 million soldiers in a small region.

India will not be undoing the revocation of the article, it's done and dusted. So let these Islamists in Kashmir Protest as much as they want, let's see how long they can continue.

Yes lets see how long hindutvas can keep this contained.

BBC, Reuters and Al Jazeers are world most watched news channels and so far they have shown everything negative about Indian army and Modi's move. People definitely follow these channels in west and Arab and they have already made up their mind about this conflict. I don't think half people even knew about this conflict but this move by India has really brought kashmir issue to main stream. Though knowing most Indians they always close eyes than face the facts.

So you think its acceptable to put a population under curfew, take away all there communications and literally starve them. This is the 21st century not stone ages, you cant treat people like this.

You need to understand people of Kashmir are living with an ideology of freedom. They will do anything to raise their voice of freedom no matter how evil tactics are tried by your army and state. Fight for freedon is ingrained in every Muslim's mentality and when it comes to freedom every Kashmiri will fight till death.

These are all from POK , not in Indian side.
Those are from Mars. Also Pak army was firing at protestors wearing Indian uniform. Lol you Indians are most gullible nation I have seen.

Entire nation is beyond deluded now lol.

They're brainwashed it's not even funny. I remember seeing a documentary where an old 93 yr old Indian went to Lahore to see his ancestral place. When he came back his 10 yr old grandkids asked him 'how was it did you see any atam-gvad ie terrorists'. Because that's all their scummy media ever talks about.

Good for them. Indian muslims should stand up for themselves rather than asking Pakistan or other countries for support. They need to raise their own voice. No one can help them but themselves.

There is no cure for delusion.

There is one cure on this forum. Ban!

Strategy is as follows:

Indians with a 1.2 billion population would by sheer numbers have a huge number of people on the internet.

Flood twitter, youtube comments sections, online forums (including pakistani forums) with misinformation, propaganda, and out right lies.

You say a lie enough times some people may start to believe it.

The thing is though you say a lie enough times, you yourself will definitely start to believe it.

That is what is happening.

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/08/tech/kashmir-internet-blackout-india-pakistan-intl-hnk/index.html

Read this piece. Can you let me know what exactly is happening in Kashmir right now and why the blackout is not a human rights violation. Is CNN posting fake news too after Reuters and Al Jazeera?

I read that piece already.

What is most important , preventing loss of lives. Govt of India has decided that till situation is under control they want to cutt off everything. They have every right to do what they feel is neccessary.

If this continues for months then we have an issue.Curfews and clamp downs are not new to this region.Let us not make loss of Internet for few days a big deal.

Are people affected by this blackout yes, but what are the other alternatives.

Ok is the govt knocking on doors and giving residents food? Your govt is starving the population with the curfew.

They will if needed, thats why the army is there, what do you think Kashmir is enemy of Indian army.

They will do everything which is necessary to make their lives easier. Some people don't want it.

They said samething when Punjab was undergoing this turmoil in 1980s but Indira Gandhi god rest her soul did something which nobody thought could be done. She paid for it with her life.

Punjab now is back to normalcy.Kashmir will too become peaceful.Give it some time. All other options which were tried for 71 years did not work .

Now u are makin stuff up, no way are the army feeding the poor in kashmir, by keeping them under curfew you are committing grave human rights violation.

Pretty sure the sikh want independance too. Why are hindus allowed hindustan and sikh are not.

That is true. But India has to use its population unlike many that can use bots, but I think one person will bring most attention to it and that will be Hasan Minhaj, probably going to happen next week and once he puts the cat out of the bag then IMO it will get the INTL attention coz he would side against BJP.

The point is simple, even if there are casualties how would you, me or anyone else find that out in this blackout?

so lock don the masjids and restrict freedom of religion? or how about just burn em down in the end..
actually no wait, why not just lock everyone up and impose a curfew..that will stop those pesky crazy mullahs..

Fascism shows itself in many forms..thanks for coming out to this forum..glad to know fascism is the side you support..

Problem is Hasan Minhaj is muslim. Muslims views on Kashmir are dismissed unless they support the Indian narrative. I.e. that Owaisi guy, spoke bravely but if you look at the comments by Indians against him it is disgusting.

Hasan minhaj has actually joked on Patriot Act that he is labelled as a pakistani agent by Indians when he is actually quite neutral.

While on the other hand, Tarek Fatah like people who hate pakistan are seen as honest and neutral pakistanis by indians lol.

Dismissed or not, Hasan Minhaj is extremely popular figure , him taking on gaming industry from labor perspective and etc has got him this audience which is very different.

Hassan Minhaj will be labelled same, I don't like his one sided views on BCCI-India as well but I don't deny that I enjoy the way he presents them.

The point here I thought was that INTL media is not giving any recognition as it deserves(Indians including myself are not going to speak against the country), the only way it could be is if John Oliver or Hasan Minhaj cover it and people share it and there is pressure on ruling govn.

Have you heard anything called video editing?
Yaar dheet pan ki bhi had hoti hai. What religion do you follow? Do you even have something called moral values? Don't get blinded by nationalism and look at the matter from as a neautral. May be then things will look different.

That was a great watch. Only if worls was filled with more lovely people like him. Today's India look very extremist especially the youth. Nothing secular or liberal. Most of them are brainwashed by religious fascists.
