Ricky Ponting warns of ‘absolute disaster’ for Cricket Australia over Steve Smith’s captaincy return

Just over two years ago, Australian cricket was desperate for a captain of Ricky Ponting’s stature.

With the respect of the team’s two most experienced leaders in tatters, another Tasmanian was thrown in the deep end and named Test skipper.

Tim Paine has proven himself more than worthy of the honour, but earlier this year, Ponting asserted the cause of the infamous ball-tampering scandal was a lack of leadership within the squad.

Although the disgraced trio were being relentlessly castigated by the sporting world, Cricket Australia left a door cracked open for Steve Smith. While CA slapped Warner with a lifelong ban from all captaincy roles, Smith was told he’d have to wait 24 months.

In Ponting’s eyes, this suggested CA were keen for the New South Welshman to eventually reclaim the title of Australian Test captain.

“If Cricket Australia had thought he would have never done it again, they would have put a black line through his name right from the start, but they’ve left that option open,” Ponting told news.com.au.

The long-awaited return of Steve Smith at Edgbaston last year was unforgettable — even as boos continued to roar throughout the Ashes series, the blonde phenom had won back the respect of his country, for the most part.

Ponting has no doubt Smith is capable of serving as Paine’s successor when the wicketkeeper decides to step away from the game — potentially after the 2021/22 Ashes series — but warns of a pending “disaster” if fans are not on board.

“The public sentiment certainly has changed, and that’ll be the interesting thing to see,” Ponting said.

“It’ll be if the Australian public are willing to allow him to come back and be captain again, because if Cricket Australia made that announcement that he’s going to be captain and it didn’t sit well with the public, then it’ll be an absolute disaster.”

No Australian has won more Test matches as captain than Ricky Ponting — without even mentioning his batting accolades, he is remembered one of the country’s most distinguished sporting leaders.

The Tasmanian maestro exemplifies the resilience and grit required to be successful in the game’s longest format. As Twenty20 cricket continues to grow in prevalence, his tally of 13,378 Test runs is unlikely to ever be surpassed by another Australian.

The coronavirus outbreak made a disturbing resurgence in Victoria, throwing the state’s sporting calendar into chaos. After the AFL’s players frantically flocked into other states, questions were asked whether the MCG could still host the Boxing Day Test match against India.

Although Adelaide Oval has emerged as a favourite to assume the Boxing Day duties, Ponting is hopeful the COVID-19 situation will be resolved in time for Melbourne to host the sport’s premier event. Still, you won’t need two chances to guess which venue the Tasmanian wants as the understudy.

“I’d like to see it in Hobart,” Ponting said with a giggle.

“But I’d love to see Cricket Australia do everything in their powers to try and ensure that the Boxing Day Test does stay in Melbourne.

“All the venues around Australia are brilliant, and they’re all unique in their own different way. Adelaide is one of the best places that I’ve been to to watch or play cricket, certainly over the last 4-5 years since they’ve renovated the stadium. I’m sure they’ll have their hand up, as will Perth and Brisbane. Everyone will be throwing their hat in the ring.

“I just hope that things have improved enough in Victoria that it doesn’t move.”

Next summer also features a mammoth Big Bash League, the longest in the competition’s history. After commencing in early December, the tournament will run for more than two months before a grand final in February.

Considering several cricketers were publicly sceptical about the BBL’s duration last summer — most notably Chris Lynn — extending the competition came as a surprise to many.

“There will be reasons why the schedule will be longer. There was some negativity last year — certainly from the players — that they found last season a little bit too long,” Ponting conceded.

“In an ideal world, Cricket Australia and the broadcasters would like to compress it down, but I just think with the unique situation that we find ourselves in this year, I just don’t think anything’s going to be perfect, like we’ve seen with the AFL season.”

With the ongoing travel restrictions and condensed international schedule, Ponting warned the upcoming Big Bash might not feature many high-profile names.

“Who knows if they’ll even have internationals playing in it this year,” Ponting said.

“The standard of the cricket might not be what it was the past couple of years.”

Ponting is currently preparing to travel to the United Arab Emirates for the postponed 2020 Indian Premier League — the 45-year-old coaches the Delhi Capitals, which boasts a squad featuring the likes of Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis.

But throughout the chaotic COVID-19 lockdown, Ponting has been working on a cherished side project, launching a wine label with his wife, aptly named Ponting Wines.

“It was something we had never thought about. We’re both very passionate wine drinkers and have learnt a lot about wine over the last 10-15 years, but we’d never thought about having our own label until it was presented to us,” Ponting said.

“We thought, ‘Why not? Let’s have a crack at this.’

“When I get involved in something, I want to be fully involved and it’s not just something Rianna and I have have just stuck our name on. It’s our business and it’s something we’re proud of, and we think it could be something that could hopefully last with our family name on it for years.”

The process of establishing a wine label started 18 months ago and officially launched during the pandemic in May. With the help of South Australian winemaker Ben Riggs, Ponting Wines has proven a success with its consumers.

“Through the last 5-6 months of COVID, it’s been something that we’ve been able to look forward to working on together every day,” Ponting said.

“You won’t go far wrong with the Shiraz. The sales of the Shiraz have been extraordinarily strong. The other one that we’ve had some great feedback on was the pinot noir out of northern Tasmania.

“I wanted to tie a bit of my background and my upbringing into this range, so we’ve got two wines out of northern Tasmania.”

Last week, CA announced a 21-man squad for September’s short-format tour of England. Along with the usual suspects, a trio of uncapped young guns — Riley Meredith, Daniel Sams and Josh Phillipe — were named in the squad.

“We’ve got some of our all-time best white-ball players playing right now, and I think it’s a great time for those young guys to be learning from them,” Ponting said.

“Even someone like Daniel Sams — he’s not young, but he’s not played international cricket, and I think he’s got a lot to offer. No better tool for a young bloke than to go to the UK and play against a really good England team, and I’m sure those young guys will learn a lot.

“Both Meredith and Phillipe look like they’re outstanding talents, and the sooner we get to see them represent Australia, the better.”

Former Australian captain George Bailey was partly responsible for the bold selection — Ponting’s ex-teammate played his final professional cricket match in January and has served as a national selector since.

“It was a terrific appointment — George is just a great bloke, as simple as that,” Ponting said.

“He’s a very good communicator, which I think is crucial in that selection role. If there’s been any negativity through the history of cricket selection in Australia, it’s been that the communication between selectors and players hasn’t been as good as it could be, and George is certainly going to make that a focus of his.

“I’m sure he’ll nail it.”

The other notable retirement of 2020 was more recent — last week, Indian cricket icon MS Dhoni stepped away from the game after attaining 17,266 runs, 359 sixes, 16 centuries and 634 catches in international cricket.

Dhoni is expected to still feature in the upcoming IPL, and Ponting looks forward to seeing the modern great work his magic once more — but hopefully not against Delhi.

“I spend a lot of time in India now, so I know how revered he is in that part of the world. Even when you travel around the world and you listen to cricket fans, they talk about Dhoni and his leadership and how calm he seems to be under pressure on the field,” Ponting said.

“He never seems to let his emotions get the better of him, which is a really good trait in a leader — as hard as I tried when I was on the field, I could never quite stay in complete control of my emotions.

“Indian teams always seemed to lift when he was captain. He always seemed to have this knack to be able to get the best out of his players. You knew that he had things under control, and his teammates loved that about him.

“Chennai have been one of the most consistently strong and competitive teams in the IPL, and a lot of that’s got to come down to his leadership as well.

“I’m looking forward to coaching against him now and making sure he doesn’t win any game off his own bat when Chennai play the Delhi Capitals.”

The 2020 IPL tournament is scheduled to commence on September 19th before a grand final on November 8th.

The disgraceful cry baby cheat Smith has lost the right to captain his country again

I'm amazed that this is even a question. Smith should never be anywhere near captaincy.

Best batsman of this generation but a hopelessly timid individual for a leadership role in any capacity.

TBF the exact quote is :

It’ll be if the Australian public are willing to allow him to come back and be captain again, because if Cricket Australia made that announcement that he’s going to be captain and it didn’t sit well with the public, then it’ll be an absolute disaster.

Do u have an issue with the crying?
The cheating was obviously disgusting, but condemning the crying when his life was falling apart is a bit much

Smith should be no where near the captaincy and I’d be surprised if we made him captain. Aus don’t follow the Ind/SA model of making ball tamperers captain

Which Indian "ball tamperer" became captain?

True. I suppose you groom them into cheats and thugs after they become captain.

I hope he is never made the captain again. What he did can be forgiven, but not forgotten. He was not a kid. He decided to do what he did with full knowledge of the consequences. Rest assured, CA is not that stupid to make the mistake of appointing him the captain again. CA is not the PCB to begin with.

CA has a history of rewarding cheats, so if Smith becomes captain again, it should not surprise anyone.

Smith should have never been allowed to play again. Not because he cheated blatantly in just the SA series, his crimes were far more serious than that. Being the captain of Australian teams in all formats, cheating got systematic backing from the very top.

So many players and teams got cheated by his cheating ways something which he can never run away from.

As a captain he had far more responsibilities than any other ordinary player. He was found lacking massively.

He can pile as many runs as he wants, he'll forever be a massively tainted player.

You do know that the South African "captain" Faf Du Plessis got busted for ball tampering twice, right? It's even more outrageous since he decided to commit the same indiscretion upon assuming captaincy for which he was penalized as a youngster. Talking about learning from your mistakes there eh? Don't see any outrage over that from the cricketing world.

Steve Smith is a horrible captain because he is not a commanding personality in the least and was too passive to put the foot down on the shady activities being committed by his teammates and rightly for that he deserves to never be captain again. But I get a chuckle out of the hypocrisy of the cricketing community for treating players committing the same mistake, differently. It was stupid that Smith had to be banned for a year.

Everyone makes mistakes, he's redeemed himself and deserves a second chance, then again I'm a forgivable type of guy and I'm of the opinion that Asif and Butt should've been given another chance.

LOL Indians phir ro rahe hain.I hope they make him captain again. He has been punished enough already he should be given another chance.

Haha, nice to see my fellow Indians downplay Smith due to his captaincy.
If Smith is tainted then so is Sachin Tendulkar.
Both are ball tamperers.

I know a few Aussies (albeit not a majority) who didn’t even want Smith and Warner back in the side at all after what happened — and I’d also be surprised if the Aussie fan contingent as a whole accepted Smith back as their captain.

Perhaps one of our resident Australian cricket experts could share a view.

The public opinion side is only half of the equation.

Darren Lehmann loved having Steve Smith as Captain.

Smith is of low-normal intelligence and is crippled by his Tourette's disorder. He is so absorbed in his batting that he has never learned the history of cricket - which Clarke notably did and which let him be a genius in terms of aggressive declarations. Smith is a supreme batsman who doesn't really have much interest in the rest of the match beyond his batting.

So as Head Coach, Smith is your perfect captain - a man totally absorbed in his batting like Geoff Boycott but with a simple and gentle personality.

So the Head Coach gets a weak, subservient captain rather like Misbah gets by having Azhar Ali, whom he knows owes his place in the team to Misbah ignoring his failing performances.

So there is a risk that an ambitious coach is going to view Steve Smith as the perfect captain to have. Pat Cummins is a smart guy with a degree from a top university (UTS in Sydney). He's a threat to the Coach, because his place in the team is rock-solid and he's smarter than the coach.

But having a distracted simpleton as your captain can be very convenient for an ambitious coach.

True. I suppose you groom them into cheats and thugs after they become captain.

Smith was regarded as very mild mannered before becoming captain. Same with Taylor, Border, Paine, Clarke, and all of the recent Australian captains bar Ponting and Waugh, and Waugh definitely cannot be considered a cheat while Ponting falls in the Kohli class of aggressive but within the spirit of the game
Nothing like India making Dravid captain

Hilarious to see Indians always at the forefront of trying to put Smith down.

"forever a tainted player." lol give me a break.

Dravid
Next question?

To call that accidental use of Lozenges ball tampering is clutching at straws.

Smith, Bancroft and Warner in comparison was a coordinated attack.

Lol, clueless people bringing in Dravid. So what both Dravid and Smith did, was identical?

And Tendulkar! Well, they can't even be called clueless.

All I was pointing out is that Dravid did cheat, and then he became captain of India. Take from that what you will

It was not accidental.
The Australian one was much worse, but India still made a ball tamperer their captain

I have no problem if CA believes Smith is the right person for captaincy. He is a phenomenal batsman and i am glad that he served his punishment and is back to playing cricket again. I think that Smith doesn't even want to be the captain anymore. Besides, Tim Paine is doing a good job, and there are other promising players who can take over after Paine retires, such as Cummins (as mentioned by Junaids) and Labuschagne.

Putting all the controversy aside, I wouldn’t want to make him captain at this point anyway. He’s 31 years old now, and if I were in charge I’d look to groom a younger captain, who could learn the job with experienced players like Smith around.

Wasim,Waqar, and Imran should have never played again as they tampered with the ball by this logic.

Don't think he will captain Australia again due to his age. I think Labuschange could be the long term captain when he has had more experience in terms of matches played. He has plenty of years left and has a good cricketing brain.

The Aussies were planning and cheating under smith and Lehmann

First they were caught looking for signals from the dressing room regarding DRS use. Smith escaped calling it Brainfade and Sutherland ran to the Bcci to hush up the matter. The then bcci headed by incompetent CoA complied.

Next he was caught in a ball tampering syndicate.

Its funny how Aussies want people to believe that the bowlers didnt know that the ball was being tampered with.

Labuschagne or Cummins will likely take over from Paine after the next Ashes, unless Paine has a terrible summer.

Unlikely a star fast bowler will be captain of any Test team, let alone Australia.

Lol..
Some people trying hard to put him down.
Nothing wrong to make him captain.

Wasim,Waqar, and Imran should have never played again as they tampered with the ball by this logic.
Ball tampering was systematic under them, or at least under Imran unlike in the case of Smith.

Besides, Imran admitted to using bottle tops on ball long after his playing days were over unlike in case of Smith who was caught red handed.

The righteous aussie fans had ZERO trouble having him back in the side, many saying how sorely he was missed. They'd have zero trouble seeing him back as skipper. They might hate cheating but they hate losing even more. Let's not put a halo around them.

They ball tampered. Stop changing the narrative. They should have been banned for life according to your standards.

List of ball tamperers who were made captain:
1.Imran Khan
2.Wasim Akram
3.Waqar Younis
4.Sachin Tendulkar
5.plessis
I don't think a guy like Dravid would tamper but include him also if you like.

I am damn sure that the likes of lillee and Thomson were also ball tamperers.
How could anyone stop ball tampering in the early 80 and 70s?
Home umpires and lack of proper surveillance, lol at some oldies trying to act holier than thou. All of your past greats were serial ball tamperers.
I think a one year ban is more than enough for ball tampering if caught first time,if someone is caught again he should be dealt strictly.

I believe in second chances.

If the Australian public wants him.to lead them then so be it and we must respect that.

Indian cricket captain was the first person to publicly ask for respect for Steven Smith from fans instead of boos. These are the values we uphold in Indian cricket.

Always nab the guilty. Punish them as per law.

Once punishment over, treat them normal as you would treat the rest. That's what civility is all about.

This is a guy who is sorry for what he's done. He lost an year of his cricket to it and he came back strong. We should get over our judgements and bias.

Hilarious to see Indians always at the forefront of trying to put Smith down.

"forever a tainted player." lol give me a break.

What Virat Kohli did for Smith in CWC 2019 is what Indian values are about.

Don't go by the trolls and bhakts brother.

We play hard but we respect our opponents, be it Pakistanis or Aussies.

To call that accidental use of Lozenges ball tampering is clutching at straws.

Smith, Bancroft and Warner in comparison was a coordinated attack.
He was fined and sanctioned.

He shouldn't be captained again.. Not bcs of he cheats, but bcs of he's not a good captain.. Paine and Finch doing well ATM..

Smith is a known and acknowledged cheat.
He should be nowhere near the captaincy.
As the English fans sing “Same old Aussies, always cheating....”

cheaters going to cheat. ponting was a fraud. Probably would never have been able to dominate with his dream team in the 2000 era without sledging and cheating.

Take nothing away though from smith. Regardless whether smith is a cheater or not, he is one of the best ever if not the best of all time.

I think Finch is a good LOI captain. Paine is doing well with Test side. No need to change captain.

The team would be able to dominate anything. If sledging makes that big a difference then test batsmen are just weak, and cheating was certainly not overly common

conjecture. Asian teams dint take fitness seriously. Made a huge difference.

Who would take the captaincy from Paine if not Smith? Labuschagne doesn't seem to have the experience or maturity to be a Test captain of Australia, both as a human and cricketer.

Smith will do a great job if he gets captaincy again’, reckons stand-in skipper Matthew Wade
Asked about Smith, who lost the captaincy because of his role in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, Wade said the team has a lot of options and they include the batting star

Australia’s stand-in T20 skipper Matthew Wade on Monday said that batting mainstay Steve Smith, who has “plenty of say” in how the team is driven on the field, would do a “great job” if he is given the leadership role again.

Wade took over the captaincy reins for the second T20I against India here on Sunday after Aaron Finch picked up an injury in the opening game in Canberra. Asked about Smith, who lost the captaincy because of his role in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, Wade said the team has a lot of options and they include the batting star.

“We have so many good leaders, I have been given the captaincy but we have got Smith, we have got Moises (Henriques), who captains his BBL team. We have guys with a lot of experience, there is a lot of discussions among the seniors but we are all working together,” Wade said.

“It is not me driving the field, obviously Finchy (Aaron Finch) is our captain and we all work together when he plays well. So Smith has plenty of say, he has been a great captain for long time and he will do a great job if he gets an opportunity,” he added.

Speaking about himself, the late bloomer said he has become a completely different player since forcing his way back into the team in 2019, two years after being axed. The 32-year-old was dropped from Australia’s Test and T20 sides on the eve of the 2017-18 Ashes but he regained his place for the Ashes last year after piling up runs in the 2018-19 season for Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes.

“Yes, I’m 32, and I’ve been around a long time, but I see myself as a completely different player. Matthew Wade, the guy that played as wicketkeeper-batter, is a completely different player than the one that’s been playing the last three years,” Wade said.

“I almost feel like I restarted my career a couple of years ago, debuting at 30,” added the player, who smashed a thrilling fifty in the second T20I.

After making a comeback to the side, Wade scored two centuries in five Tests of the Ashes series. Wade said he feels “no different to guys like Hadds (Brad Haddin) and Mike Hussey” who also made a comeback in their 30s.

“Age is always spoken about when you get to my age and that’s the nature of the beast. Every game I play for Australia is one that I didn’t think I’d get and whether that’s my last game or whether I’ll play another 50, that doesn’t faze me,” he added.

On being handed the captaincy, Wade said, “...this game moves fast and sometimes things happen that are quite unexpected and that’s exactly what’s happened in this scenario. There’s plenty of guys that could have done it on the ground at the time which made it a lot easier for me.”

Lol

Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

that team wouldnt be able to dominate as much if asian teams took fitness seriously. I thought my post was pretty self explanatory.

Unless Improved fitness would suddenly make average players into Mcgrath, Warne, Gilchrist, Ponting and Hayden; I dont see your point being logical.

Who would take the captaincy from Paine if not Smith? Labuschagne doesn't seem to have the experience or maturity to be a Test captain of Australia, both as a human and cricketer.

Looks like Travis Head.

Cummins is a natural leader in the group.

Giving it to Smith again would be a step backwards. He was too weak to step in & stop the nonsense last time. Guys like Warner don't quite respect him enough, they think they can do anything and get away with it.

The only issue is whether they'll ever give it to a bowler.

Head is a nobody.

Do his performances even cement him a place as a batsman, let alone captain?

There is already talk of Australia grooming Head for a possible leadership role in the future, but in the here and the now, at some point in the series, Head and Matthew Wade might come under pressure from Green to even keep that middle-order position.

Will be interesting to see which one of Head and Wade makes way for Green when he inevitably comes into the side. If they are serious about Head replacing Paine as captain, they will surely not want to drop him, even though right now Wade is better in my opinion.

If they want Head as a future captain, he will have to perform this series. He's not that young anymore, he's 26, same as Marnus, yet miles behind him as a batsman.

Mark Waugh said that Steven Smith is the most experienced player so why can't he be the captain, he's served his penalty. He's the logical choice and has captained Australia for a long time. (Fox Cricket).

I'd keep Smith away from captaincy, as I was also not a fan of Amir returning to the Pakistan team. Same with Sharjeel, Nawaz, and the other fixers. They don't have a good public image anymore, so it is best to leave captaincy out of their hands. Cummins could be a good choice of a captain, and not much goes in Smith's favour as a captain considering his horrendous IPL Season with RR. So many technical blunders.

If Smith isn't going to captain when Australia had many senior players out ,I don't see him captaning Australia again.

The long term captain of Australia will be Labuschange. Travis Head needs to concentrate on his own game and Pat Cummins is a fast bowler and it will be a lot of workload for him to be captain as well.
