We have all witnessed both the knocks and aware of the importance of both the innings in the context of the game.

Both the knocks were played by a left-handed batsman coming to bat at no.5.

The victim in both the cases was Australian skipper, Tim Paine and neither of the knocks were chanceless.

Which one do you think was bigger, better and greater?

Ben Stokes for me, he singlehandedly won that game from England. Pant was helped by crucial knocks by Washington Sundar and co
 
Both ATG knocks but I will say that stokes' knock was better because apart from Stokes pretty much every english player surrendered.

While Pant received support from pujara, Gill.
 
Are you kidding me? Ben stokes was playing at home.

We broke the #1 bowling attack, counter attacking them in their fortress after getting battered and bruised (Pujara took atleast 12 blows - phew!). Pant all the way.
 
Ben Stokes, no doubt. He was playing with a no. 10 & 11 batsmen & had to shield them throughout too, while mounting a counter-attack.Pant was playing with Pujara mostly, who had blocked one end - so he had more support than Stokes

They were 8 or 9 down and Stokes scored the remaining 75/80 on his own. Even at home that was quite a chase, better than Pant for sure.
 
Stokes for me, as much as this chase was special, there was a hopeless air around that Headingley innings that propelled the match to greatness. The idea of a last man standing against the cavalry will always inspire.

This match obviously also suffered from the lack of a full crowd.
 
Remember, the outcome is much bigger and more satisfying in Pant's case. Stokes knock just delayed Australia's hope of retaining Ashes. Pant won his team a test series victory in Australia with this knock although supported by other guys.

Ben Stokes knock was better even though he was playing at home and Pant did it on an away tour.

This is an important point. A series win and that too in Australia was riding on Pant's innings.
 
Away performances should always have preference over home performances. Better comparison would've been the Kushal Perera knock against SA vs Pant's at Brisbane. Kushal's one still remains the best away performance of all time. But this one will be up there.
 
Lol, what about Kusal Perera's knock against South Africa? To score 70 runs with the number 11 batsman while batting against Steyn, Rabada, Olliveir on a South African wicket is not a joke. That innings single handedly played a role in a poor Sri Lankan team being the first sub continent side to beat South Africa in South Africa and mind you, South African wickets are now even more difficult to play in compared to Australian wickets.
 
Winning an away game in the last session of a test to win the series at the host's fortress can't be compared.
 
India's chase as a collective effort was better than England's though Stokes may have had a greater impact than Pant, individually
 
Pant played a great knock but Ben's was a blinder. Ben's innings would rank in top 10 ever of cricket while Pant's would rank somewhere in top 50. Stokes for me!
 
No need to compare.

Ben Stokes knock was one for the ages.

Pant played really well today though.
 
The only negative about Stokes innings is that he was playing at home. While Pant was playing in Aussie fortress against the best bowling attack. Otherwise Stokes was better. However, Pant has many more such innings to come

Stokes was plumb lbw with England needing two runs to win. Umpire gave not out and Aus didn't have a review left.

Pant' knock was chanceless.

Stokes because of that booming last-wicket stand.

Though Kusal Perera's 154* - half those runs scored with the #11 - was better even than that.
 
Ben stokes.

Sometimes its not about home or away..or quality of opposition but the monumental task in front of you.

Ben faced a far bigger challenge.

Just like Laxman's one was probably the greatest knock ever but it was at home.

50 chasing n scoring away from home is more priceless to me than a eighty at home ....especially at a venue supposedely impossible to play for touring teams !!!

Both Pants and Bens knocks and for that matter Kushals were great too...

But talk about a chase , A Laras clasic 153 not out comes to mind wherw he too singlele handely won a test on some absolutely minesweeper windies pitch with number 8,9,10,12 batsman against aussies ...i believe wisden has that innings in their books

20-30 years down the line these 3 innings will feature as well when these men retire.
 
Pant for me, for the single reason that it was in Australia. No home ground advantage. You cant take that away!
 
Well of course it has to be Rishabh Pant's innings for it came away from home especially as Aussies fondly call it 'THE FORTESS GABBA' :inti
 
Ben Stokes. Even if it was at home and that England lost the series, but he won the game from a point where they pretty much had 0 chance and made those last 70-odd runs all by himself.
 
Pant for me. Stokes was given not out on a plumb LBW and also had a catch dropped against him in the deep. Pant's was flawless apart from a very very tough stumping.
 
For me it's Pant, first of all he was playing outside home & 2nd it was at Gabba which was a fortress for Australia. Although Stokes innings was also amazing but if I have to choose one I'll choose Rishab's innings.
 
Stokes got way too many chances tbh. But still that was some atg knock.
 
Pant. There is a difference between doing it at x,y,z venue and doing it at Gabba.
 
No need to pull down Pant's knock though. What Pant did today was incredible, definitely an ATG knock. Second only to Ben Stokes' knock in my opinion, by a small margin. Pant has silenced so many critics (including me) that it is not even funny.
 
That was from a hopeless situation. This is not far from it. Also Subhman Gill's scintillating 91 laid a solid platform.

Stokes had the batting with number 11 factor, and had a 50% higher score
Also more difficult batting conditions in England

Pant was exceptional, but do not know how you can rate his knock above Mendis and Lara for two

Stumping. Also had a few balls fall short of fielders
I don't have the stats but I reckon Stokes would have had a higher control percentage, especially accounting for his more difficult conditions
 
They are also quite good. I honestly didn't think of Lara's knock as I had not watched it live. But given the context of the game, I felt that Pant's knock is better than Mendis's knock. But then it's just my opinion.

Both were great innings though for me Stokes inning was better considering he went completely berserk at the fall of 9th wicket, and he also is one of my favorite players so there is that bias as well.

However, one inning which doesn't get much talked about is Kusal Perera inning against SA, which perhaps is the best test match winning inning ever. Chasing 300+ against the likes of Steyn, Philander, Rabada in their home conditions, with 9 wickets down for 225, it was a freakish inning by all aspects. Unfortunately, Lanka doesn't get much talked about, hence this inning doesn't receive the attention it deserves.

I am so glad discerning posters have highlighted Kusal Perera's once in a lifetime innings in South Africa - contributing to Sri Lanka becoming the first Asian team to have won a Test series in SAF.

Paine is such a bottle job. Gifted Stokes and Pant innings of a lifetimes with his awful fields and tactics.

You are selling Kusal's inning short, that inning to me was the best ever test inning, and if ever rated by experts it would be one of the top 3 innings. I do casual betting and my bookie had closed the book when 9th wicket fell. He had to restart the lines after around 20 mins.
 
Pant's

Stokes was incredible too but atleast he had a few chances and knew the conditions. Pant literally had nothing going for him.Batting out of position,in the fastest pitch in the world against ATG attack.

Not to forget his position was constantly under fire

Well in my ranking - I rated Kusal's innings as the top innings.

1. Kusal

2. Ben Stokes

3. Rishabh Pant - in that order - that is exactly what I wrote in my post. I guess the fact that I did not number them may have confused you - but no - I agree with you 100%. Kusal's was the best.
 
Couldn't decide. I rate both knocks very highly.

Funny that both of these innings were against Australia with Paine as captain. Makes you wonder whether Paine needs to be relived of the captaincy. I think he's a bottle job and his tactics are poor.
 
Pant only slightly.

Given he was playing away from home, on what was Australia s fortress, on a cracking 5th day pitch, against such an attack, and most importantly with the series on line, with all four possible options open - Ind win, Aus win, Tie and even loss.

Also, he had limitation of time - at one point India needed more than run a ball. He could have shut shop and played out a draw but didn't do it and focussed on winning the series.

In short, he put fear into the minds of Aussies right from the time he walked out and carried out his job like a boss.
